For the past 40 years, Tom Ramos has been a physicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). For the past few years Tom has been conducting research and writing a history of the early years of the Cold War, and the nuclear weapons program of LLNL. Through interviews with historical figures and with extensive research into top secret archives, he has brought out new perspectives of the Cold War that have been little understood until now. His efforts were rewarded with the publication of his book, From Berkeley to Berlin.Tom created several programs in the 1990s that served the Defense Department. Most notable among them, starting with a $200K grant, Tom created the Counterproliferation Analysis and Planning System (CAPS), which helped military operators analyze facilities manufacturing weapons of mass destruction in hostile countries. The program grew into a $46M a year enterprise and was declared to be the Defense Department's premier counterproliferation program by Secretary of Defense William Cohen. Another significant program that Tom started was the Homeland Defense Operational Planning System (HOPS), a program like CAPS, but steered towards analyses to protect America's critical infrastructure. In the 1980's Tom was a nuclear weapons designer in the Laboratory's X-Ray Laser Program, which supported President Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative. In the program's last nuclear test, Tom led a team of physicists who designed the program's brightest laser. In the late 1980s Tom joined a committee helping to prepare the government for START negotiations and he prepared a daily summary sheet for the Secretary of Energy to use at NSC meetings on the resumption of START Talks. Later Tom was assigned to the Pentagon as the legislative affairs officer for the Congressionally mandated Nuclear Weapons Council. Tom's duties included preparing the Council for Congressional hearings.Prior to joining the Laboratory, and after graduating from West Point and MIT, Tom served as a combat engineer and was later an associate professor of physics at West Point, New York, where he taught each of the physics department's core courses, as well as electives in Quantum Mechanics and Nuclear Physics.EPISODE NOTES:Follow NucleCast on Twitter at @NucleCastEmail comments and story suggestions to NucleCast@anwadeter.orgSubscribe to NucleCast podcastRate the show

Do you think our government needs some checks in place? Do you feel hopeless in reporting injustices about our government to the government? Today we are seeing large abuses of power from lawyers, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, police, FBI, senators, aldermen, and women. This doesn't cover all the offices, but you know what I mean. Do you think it's time to put some laws in place and have it take swift action to hold corrupt officials accountable? Tony Viola, my guest today, is working on doing just that. He knows from experience how government officials can destroy lives. Listen to his story; I did, and regardless of whether I know all the facts, I know some are true from experience, and I bet you do, too.Tony Viola, a Cleveland, Ohio citizen 10 years ago, was an ordinary successful real estate broker, having built his company with his wife. That all changed in a moment when the FBI charged him with embezzling over $46M in funds. He spent over 10 years in prison before winning his second trial from prison and being exonerated after a whistleblower came forward. He is continuing the fight by bringing a public awareness of what's happening and getting citizens to unite so that corrupt officials are held accountable.Show Highlights: · Tony's Arrest· Prosecutors who plan to win at all costs· Government corruption· Truth not pursued, but attention instead· They think they are doing the work of GodGuest Contact Information:Tony's WrongfulConviction Story | Free Tony ViolaMrtonyviola@iICloud.comHow Can I Help? | Free Tony ViolaPhone: 330-998-3290How to help?SIGN our Petition on Change.Org: http://chng.it/M6KG5yBT SHARE our website on your social media account TWEET out a link to FreeTony on your Twitter Account SIGN UP for our monthly E Newsletter (sign up in footer) FIND a blogger or reporter willing to write about this story POST a link to FreeTony on articles about criminal justice WRITE the Ohio Attorney General, asking him to investigate Prosecutor Kasaris:Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, 150 Gay Street - 16th Floor, Columbus, Ohio 43215 FOLLOW Tony on Twitter @tonyviola TELL us about your experiences with the justice systemFIND a criminal justice or journalism class interestedin a class project about Tony's case FIND celebrities to post a link to FreeTony on their social media accounts.FRIEND Tony on Facebook | TonyViolaAdvertisement– A...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How much do markets value Open AI?, published by Ben West on May 14, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary: A BOTEC indicates that Open AI might have been valued at 220-430x their annual recurring revenue, which is high but not unheard of. Various factors make this multiple hard to interpret, but it generally does not seem consistent with investors believing that Open AI will capture revenue consistent with creating transformative AI. Overview Epistemic status: revenue multiples are intended as a rough estimate of how much investors believe a company is going to grow, and I would be surprised if my estimated revenue multiple was off by more than a factor of 5. But the "strategic considerations" portion of this is a bunch of wild guesses that I feel much less confident about. There has been some discussion about how much markets are expecting transformative AI, e.g. here. One obvious question is "why isn't Open AI valued at a kajillion dollars?" I estimate that Microsoft's investment implicitly valued OAI at 220-430x their annual recurring revenue. This is high - average multiples are around 7x, but some pharmaceutical companies have multiples > 1000x. This would seem to support the argument that investors think that OAI is exceptional (but not "equivalent to the Industrial Revolution" exceptional). However, Microsoft received a set of benefits from the deal which make the EV multiple overstated. Based on adjustments, I can see the actual implied multiple being anything from -2,200x to 3,200x. (Negative multiples imply that Microsoft got more value from access to OAI models than the amount they invested and are therefore willing to treat their investment as a liability rather than an asset.) One particularly confusing fact is that OAI's valuation appears to have gone from $14 billion in 2021 to $19 billion in 2023. Even ignoring anything about transformative AI, I would have expected that the success of ChatGPT etc. should have resulted in a more than a 35% increase. Qualitatively, my guess is that this was a nice but not exceptional deal for OAI, and I feel confused why they took it. One possible explanation is “the kind of people who can deploy $10B of capital are institutionally incapable of investing at > 200x revenue multiples”, which doesn't seem crazy to me. Another explanation is that this is basically guaranteeing them a massive customer (Microsoft), and they are willing to give up some stock to get that customer. Squiggle model here It would be cool if someone did a similar write up about Anthropic, although publicly available information on them is slim. My guess is that they will have an even higher revenue multiple (maybe infinite? I'm not sure if they had revenue when they first raised). Details Valuation: $19B A bunch of news sites (e.g. here) reported that Microsoft invested $10 billion to value OAI at $29 billion. I assume that this valuation is post money, meaning the pre-money valuation is 19 billion. Although this site says that they were valued at $14 billion in 2021, meaning that they only increased in value 35% the past two years. This seems weird, but I guess it is consistent with the view that markets aren't valuing the possibility of TAI. Revenue: $54M/year Reuters claims they are projecting $200M revenue in 2023. FastCompany says they made $30 million in 2022. If the deal closed in early 2023, then presumably annual projections of their monthly revenue were higher than $30 million, though it's unclear how much. Let's arbitrarily say MRR will increase 10x this year, implying a monthly growth rate of 10^(1/12) = 1.22 Solving the geometric series of 200 = x (1-1.22^12) / (1 -1.22) we get that their first month revenue is $4.46M, a run rate of $53.52M/year Other factors: The vast majority of the investment is going to be spent on Micros...

In this week's episode, our host Jonathan Aymin sits down with Venue Consultant Lindsay Lucas, to discuss how to think about financing during tough economic times with high interest rates, what things to consider as you are looking for funding, and how to stay flexible in the method but firm in your goals! Her favorite people to work with are the kind wearing dirty (but reliable) boots—farmers, ranchers, & other people who can confidently ride a horse. If you're the type who likes to look off over the horizon & not see your neighbors … she's all in. Since 2016, Lindsay's helped more than 700 venue owners secure funding, scale for sustainable growth, and everything in between. Her portfolio of clients includes venue properties accounting for more than $46M in revenue over the last 6 years. She is also a wife, mom, and a sweet-tea addict. Many experts, entrepreneurs, coaches, and consultants come to me because they're stuck. They can't figure out how to break through their revenue ceiling no matter how much journaling they do. No matter how many affirmations they say, how many courses they take or masterminds they join, new programs they offer, or strategies they employ — they've been hovering around the same income for two, three, or even five years. I found that what they have in common is making this Million Dollar Mistake No. 3. This is a sneaky thought process for most people in our society, a belief that keeps many stuck at an income plateau and life in general. Key points discussed in this episode: ✔️ One statistic that blows my mind is how 2% of small business owners, especially those run by women, only make it to $1,000,000 in their business. That means 98% of the women-founded companies all around America never crossed the million-dollar mark. My goal is to help to turn that stat on its head and pave the way for more women to succeed using their business and entrepreneurship as their vehicle. ✔️ Do the lifetime cash creation exercise. Calculate and find every penny you've made over your adult life. Write down all the money you've made. Take in that number and think about all the cash that passed through your hands. Whether it's $46K, $460K, or $46M over your lifetime, know that you have the capacity to build wealth. You have in your cellular memory the ability to create so much money in revenue. ✔️ Most people resist the idea of making money rapidly. The lie is that you shouldn't want to make money too fast because that's considered a get-rich-quick scheme. "Things that come too fast don't last." Now, I'm not saying that you should just do everything possible to make money as fast as possible, no matter who gets hurt. What I am saying is we've all been programmed to believe that there's something wrong with making money. Stop counting how much you make and measure how fast your company generates revenue. Remember, money loves speed. ✔️ How about the scheme of staying broke forever? Many systems out there are meant to keep you exactly where you are. That is the trap most people fall into. When talking to people about creating revenue in their business, many entrepreneurs and experts who come to me believe: I don't make enough money. There aren't enough clients. Where am I going to find the people? I invite you to stop looking the hard way and rethink how you look at money. ✔️ Game on! Live will prepare you to explode your bank account. It will also transform your life and help you achieve the impossible. It's going to lay the foundation for that. So if you are committed to shattering your biggest limiting beliefs, even if you're not consciously aware of it. Sister, you are the curse breaker and the creator of possibilities. ✨ Step up and show up. Go to gameonliveevent.com. ———————————————————————————————— Loved this episode? Know that it's your time. I finally got to bring on Pete Lorenco (VP of Marketing at Alyce) to join me on the show. I'm a big fan and you'll soon be too. Prior to Alyce, Pete was VP of Marketing at Avid Technology (a public company) and several other enterprise companies including Iron Mountain and EMC (prior to their acquisition by Dell). Alyce provides a better way to do outbound B2B marketing by transforming from transactional touch-points to delivering personal experiences using gifting, swag, and direct mail. Here's what we hit on: I had Dan Frohnen (former CMO at Sendoso) on the show, Episode 16, and we talked about gifting. There are other players in the space, how do you compete; How does gifting work effectively within the buyer journey; Some people will not agree with our POV and why that's a good thing; How is outbound broken today, and what should we do about it; Why certain goals matter in order to create an experience people will love, and what those goals should be; At Alyce you're sourcing 70% of total new logo pipeline & revenue from inbound marketing - what's your 2022 marketing plan; What channels are you leaning into; How're you setting up effective ABM at Alyce, from your target list of accounts to winning deals; What are your top marketing challenges; What are the last 1-2 really good, creative marketing ideas you/your team has come up with. Plot: Top Five Trivia of the movie: Top 5 Trivia When Bob Barker was later asked to come on board with the project, he agreed to do so with two stipulations — that writers would re-work the scene to allow Barker to beat Gilmore in a fight … and that the “Price is Right” star could shoot his own fight scenes rather than have a body double. Barker had been training with his neighbor, Chuck Norris, and wanted to show off his skills.Although Christopher McDonald has become synonymous with Shooter McGavin, he was not the first choice for the role. Producers were hoping that Kevin Costner would play the part but he was interested in making “Tin Cup.” McDonald almost turned down the role of McGavin as well because he was trying to break of the stereotype of playing villains. After meeting Adam Sandler and realizing how funny the film would be, he agreed to the role. McDonald has since said it was one of the very best moves of his career.Happy was loosely based on a childhood friend of Sandler's named Kyle McDonough. They grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire, and would sometimes play golf—but Sandler could never outdrive his buddy, which he attributed to McDonough's extensive background playing hockey. McDonough went on to play in the East Coast Hockey League, the British Hockey League, and a league in Norway. He remains friends with Sandler to this day. He's hard to recognize under all of that hair, but Otto the homeless caddy was none other than Allen Covert, Sandler's longtime friend and Happy Madison Productions collaborator who played the title role in the cult comedy Grandma's Boy ten years later. Covert's IMDb page is full of Sandler projects, starting with 1989's Going Overboard, followed by Airheads, Happy Gilmore, Bulletproof, The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, Never Been Kissed, Big Daddy, Little Nicky, Mr. Deeds, and on, and on...The Happy Gilmore score was composed by the frontman for new wave art rockers Devo, who had huge hits in the early days of MTV with "Whip It" and their cover of The Rolling Stones "Satisfaction." Like Oingo Boingo's Danny Elfman, Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh has found tremendous success as a composer, working on kid TV shows like Rugrats, the famous "Get a Mac" commercials, several Wes Anderson films, and more recently, 21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, and one of our favorite scores, Thor: Ragnarok. Almost 20 years after Happy Gilmore, Mothersbaugh composed the music for Adam Sandler's Hotel Transylvania, at the urging of his then young kids. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING** TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. From an amphibious landing exercise simulating an invasion across the Taiwan Strait, to increasing benefits for military members, to making changes to a law that gives communist leader Xi Jinping more power to mobilize the country and wage a war, a series of military-related moves by China is raising concerns. Some worry the communist regime is already on track toward preparing the country to invade Taiwan, and it may not stop at Taiwan. Is the regime seriously trying to mobilize its 1.4 billion people for an invasion of Taiwan? If so, how soon? Or are the threats aimed at launching an information war across the strait? Why Listen: I'm so honored to have had time with Christian today I want to give a little bit of backstory that I give at the start of the interview but I think it's worth recapping here. So, as many of you know we were fortunate to receive financial sponsorship from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. It allowed us to do a new series of interviews and so as Steve Bane and I were talking about who we wanted to interview, I realized that we haven't talked to anyone in the drone industry, and I think it's an industry that has a lot of interest for veterans - it's growing rapidly, it's cool, it's high tech. And so I did a little bit of searching and Steve sent me some articles and we looked for Veterans in this space. And I came across Christian. He was the only person I emailed and I just sent a cold email explaining what I do with Beyond the Uniform and asking if you'd be willing to be on the show. And I just want to bring that up first of all to say like, I was so energized and inspired by this conversation. And it all came about because of simply writing an email to another veteran. And I just want to bookmark that for all of you listening because I think great things come when you get out of your head when you get out of your comfort zone when you get out of your office or home and talk to people. And that's a major theme in today's interview and Kristen has a really brilliant man I think that will come across in his, his advice to listeners, but he in 1998 got out of the military went into tech, when tech was just or that you know that is software programming, and that was just becoming a thing. And I think that you'll learn a lot from his story, although it's, it's one of entrepreneurship it's one about the drone industry. It's really advice relevant to every career path, because his story demonstrates, time and time again, the value that comes from pursuing one's passion, the value that comes when you put aside money. At least temporarily to focus on adding value and learning, and also a story of how, when you get out of your comfort zone when you talk to people when you circulate ideas, great things come about. So we cover a lot of ground we talk about minimum viable product we talk about customer development. We talked about why you should never have an NDA that's a non disclosure agreement. We talk about leadership on it was just really exhilarating conversation and so I'm really honored to have had Christian on the show. About Christian: Christian Sanz is the CEO and Founder of Skycatch, the leading industrial aerial data collection and analytics company, focused on indexing and extracting critical information from the physical world. He served in the Navy for 4 years, and his civilian career includes work as a software engineer for The Walt Disney Company, a Senior Software Engineer at LoopNet, the Senior Director of Engineering at Break Media, the CTO at Kin Community, the Founding CTO of Storify (acquired by Adobe), and the Founder of DroneGames. Over the last 7 years, Christian has grown Skycatch to have over 50 employees and $46M in funding.
Interview with Fred Davidson, President & CEO of Impact Silver (TSX-V: IPT).It's Silver week. A famously volatile commodity, but hit it right and you can make money. We talk to Davidson, a long-time Silver miner, who talks us through the basics of the macro thesis. Correlation with Gold makes it slightly easier to gauge the temperature when its coming and when you are in it. What was less clear is how low it is here to stay.Davidson has been with Impact Silver for 13yrs and mined 9.5Moz. They are a primary Silver producer, at 95% of production skewed to Silver. Many SIlver operators have come and gone but Impact Silver remains as a small but profitable producer. We ask about growth, the options seem to be: 1. Keep producing, 2. Farm-out of one of their licenced areas, 3. M&A. Listen which he thinks is most likely. We want to know what is going to move the dial for shareholders. They have $4M of cash, no debt, $55M of operating profits, and a market cap of only $46M. They own 2 mills. Only one is operating. And a concentrate sales agreement with Samsung. I first heard Billy Wu speak at a renewable energy event in London about four years, and my inner battery nerd was born and thrust into the world. Dr Billy has the knack of being a fully fledged Dr of batteries, whilst being able to articulate to non scientific nerds like me, and possibly you, if you are reading this. We talk batteries, supercapacitors, and of course Hydrogen Fuel Cells, where we are, what’s next, and who will win! About our guest Dr. Billy Wu is a senior lecturer in the Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial College London where he co-leads the Electrochemical Science and Engineering group. His research activities include: energy storage/conversion technologies (lithium-ion batteries, redox flow cells, supercapacitors and fuel cells) and manufacturing (3D printing, nanofibre electrospinning). He has published 35 peer reviewed journal papers, 2 book chapters and 4 patents since completing his PhD in 2014 and sits on the editorial board of Scientific Reports. He has been an investigator in research projects worth in excess of £46M, directly managing a budget of >£2M and is a co-investigator for the UK Faraday Institution battery research centre. He directly leads a team of 7 post-docs and 6 PhD students within the wider Electrochemical Science and Engineering group which has >50 researchers. Prior to his PhD in automotive proton exchange membrane fuel cell-lithium-ion battery hybrid systems, he completed his masters in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London in 2010. Street Farm Growing Food, Jobs, and Hope on the Urban Frontier By Michael Ableman Categories: Farm & Garden, Politics & Public Policy Street Farm is the inspirational account of residents in the notorious Low Track in Vancouver, British Columbia—one of the worst urban slums in North America—who joined together to create an urban farm as a means of addressing the chronic problems in their neighborhood. It is a story of recovery, of land and food, of people, and of the power of farming and nourishing others as a way to heal our world and ourselves. During the past seven years, Sole Food Street Farms—now North America’s largest urban farm project—has transformed acres of vacant and contaminated urban land into street farms that grow artisan-quality fruits and vegetables. By providing jobs, agricultural training, and inclusion in a community of farmers and food lovers, the Sole Food project has empowered dozens of individuals with limited resources who are managing addiction and chronic mental health problems. Sole Food’s mission is to encourage small farms in every urban neighborhood so that good food can be accessible to all, and to do so in a manner that allows everyone to participate in the process. In Street Farm, author-photographer-farmer Michael Ableman chronicles the challenges, growth, and success of this groundbreaking project and presents compelling portraits of the neighborhood residents-turned-farmers whose lives have been touched by it. Throughout, he also weaves his philosophy and insights about food and farming, as well as the fundamentals that are the underpinnings of success for both rural farms and urban farms. Street Farm will inspire individuals and communities everywhere by providing a clear vision for combining innovative farming methods with concrete social goals, all of which aim to create healthier and more resilient communities. Michael Ableman is a farmer, author, photographer and urban and local food systems advocate. Michael has been farming organically since the early 1970′s and is considered one of the pioneers of the organic farming and urban agriculture movements. He is a frequent lecturer to audiences all over the world, and the winner of numerous awards for his work. Ableman is the author of four trade published books: From the Good Earth: A celebration of growing food around the world; On Good Land: The autobiography of an urban farm; Fields of Plenty: A farmer’s journey in search of real food and the people who grow it, and most recently Street Farm; Growing Food, Jobs, and Hope on the Urban Frontier. Michael Ableman is the founder of the Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens in Goleta, California where he farmed for 20 years; co-founder and director of Sole Food Street Farms and the charity Cultivate Canada in Vancouver, British Columbia; and founder and director of the Center for Arts, Ecology and Agriculture based at his family home and farm on Salt Spring Island. Street Farm Facts Sole Food Street Farms consists of ve separate sites in Vancouver, including the largest urban orchard in North America. All sites are paved land and crops are grown in soil- lled growing boxes. The overall yield of this growing system is 15 to 25 times higher than conventional “open eld” growing systems. • 4.5 total acres of paved urban land • 75 people employed from 2009 to present • 8,000 containers used to grow fruits and vegetables • 50,000 pounds of food produced annually • $1.7M+ total sales revenue (2009-2016) • $300,000 in annual wages paid to employees • $20,000 estimated annual loss of Sole Food crops due to rodent damage (rats like vegetables, too) • $2.20 estimated savings to the health care, legal, and social assistance systems for every dollar paid to Sole Food employees (Queens University study, 2013) • $150,000+ raised annually to support the Sole Food program • $46M per day of taxpayer money spent to subsidize large-scale industrial farming
Host: Prathima Setty, MD Issues of vaginal health are commonly seen in post-menopausal women, breast cancer survivors and women who have had a hysterectomy. According to the US Census Bureau there are nearly 46M women between the ages of 50 and 80, and over 2.8M breast cancer survivors. Existing treatments for post-menopause vaginal health can be time intensive or messy, or contraindicated for health reasons. They also can have numerous side-effects and offer only marginal improvement -- according to a doctor associated with the study. Host Dr. Prathima Setty welcomes Dr. Mickey Karram, Director of Fellowship Program on Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery at The Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, OH. Dr. Karram will share preliminary findings from a trail evaluating laser treatment on post-menopausal women and breast cancer survivors experiencing vaginal health issues. Supported by an Educational Grant from BD Diagnostics. ReachMD retains full editorial control of the content for this program.

November 15, 2011 Today’s episode features an impressive lineup for a hot topic. Host Dr. Tim Cripe warns: “If your blood isn’t boiling by the end, you weren't listening.” Hear Tim and co-host Dr. Lionel Chow discuss pediatric cancer research funding with guests Dr. C. Patrick (Pat) Reynolds, Dr. E. Anders (Andy) Kolb, and parent Joe McDonough. Dr. Pat Reynolds puts government spending on the number one disease killer of children in the US in perspective, comparing the tiny $200M spent on pediatric cancer research to the foreign aid budget of $22B (less than 1%). For example, $1.6B goes to Egypt alone. The COG budget is a mere $46M. The DOD budget is $700B. See his slides here. Dr. Lionel Chow mentions an enlightening fact – private donations to St Jude exceed $600M per year, on top of the givers’ paying taxes. This is 3 times the entire NCI budget for pediatric cancer research for all institutions in the US. Spending per Person Years Life Lost is compared for childhood cancers and adult cancers, see graph here. Dr. C Patrick Reynolds is Director, Cancer Center and Professor of Cell Biology & Biochemistry, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics, School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Lubbock TX. Dr. E Anders Kolb is the Director of Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation at Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, and Head of the Cancer Therapeutics Laboratory at Nemours Biomedical Research, Wilmington, DE. Joe McDonough is father to Andrew, and founder of The Andrew McDonough B+ (Be Positive) Foundation, raising money for families and research. Please send comments to twipo@solvingkidscancer.org
