"When you see all these people with a social security check, you think that fell out of the sky? Thank a union!"   Cecil Roberts is a miner and president of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). This was recorded in Sharples, West Virginia during Labor Day 2021 in celebration of the 100 Year Anniversary of the Battle of Blair Mountain.   The full audio documentary can be found here: https://www.empathymedialab.com/post/voices-from-the-centennial-march-to-blair-mountain-organized-by-the-united-mine-workers-of-america   Speech (edited)   This is a significant place in the history of the United Mine Workers. Why did you never hear about this march? Because working class history is just never taught to the degree it should be. We are bound and determined that the history of our forefathers will not be taken away from us by any rich person, any government, whether it be state or federal. Those marchers created the working class, they created the middle class, giving people a voice at what? An ability to stand up and fight back. That's why people, whenever they take labor day off, tell em' thank a union. When you see all these people with a social security check, you think that fell out of the sky? Thank a union. If you've got a Medicare card in your pocket, you should what? If indeed you get a pension and I don't care where you work, you should do what? If you've got a safe place to work, you should? If you've got a job that allows you to live in a middle class, you should? If you've got equal rights as a woman, you should? If you've got equal rights because you belong to a union and a person of color, you know where that came around you should? If you got anything good in your life and you work for a living, you should? It's all of you working together, standing together. Thank you. And God bless you.   About the Labor Solidarity Podcast   The Labor Solidarity Podcast highlights the work of labor leaders while discussing historic struggles and the importance of organizing with the goal of building international labor solidarity. "And if you let these motherf*****s think that they have that leverage, it's only gonna grow above you. So it's just people understanding their worth." Luke Rockhold is an American professional mixed martial artist (MMA). Rockhold is currently signed to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he competes in the Light Heavyweight division. Rockhold is a former UFC Middleweight Champion. The UFC is notorious for being anti-union. Based on records made available through an ongoing class action lawsuit from numerous ex-UFC fighters, the promotion has approximately paid out 16 to 20 percent of the revenue to the athletes. Most other major sports leagues — including the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball — pay out around 50 percent of the revenue to the athletes. (source) Nearly 80 percent of MMA athletes said they would be in favor of organizing a union (source).  Kobe Bryant even suggested the UFC should have a union. In May of 2017 Bryant was invited to speak to UFC fighters at an athlete's retreat and was asked by labor organizer and featherweight contender Leslie Smith about the importance of collective bargaining and labor unions to NBA athletes like him.  Kobe answered as follows: “Even us as players, where we have our union meetings and things of that nature, we're normally at each other's throats competing against each other. But we understand completely that a rising tide raises all boats,” Bryant continued. “When you guys have this unity and you guys are operating together on the same page together, it does nothing but simply fortify the sport, make the sport better. Not just for the present, but also for future generations that are coming. So, it's extremely important.” (source). ------------------------------------------- Edited Transcript of Luke Rockhold's Press Conference for UFC 278 on August 17, 2022.  (Full video here) (Question)  Over the past few weeks you've been very vocal about fighter to pay. Do you worry that maybe the promotion will sort of be rooting against you if you continue to talk out about that subject? Root against me for what? What are they gonna do? I mean, root against me, go for it, do your thing, dude, I'm here to fight. I'm not saying anything that's not real. Everything I'm saying is justified and truthful. Just because like, I should be in a position of power before I say this shit? Fuck off, I got nothing to lose. I don't need this business. I love the fighting and I'm here to fight the best motherfuckers and this happens to be the place where it's done, you know? They need to grow this whole fucking thing needs to grow together. Our lives are on the fucking line. Healthcare needs to be taken care of, our fucking health needs to be taken care of. Mine has not been taken care of, you know what I mean?  Like, yeah, this is business, every business is like this, it's about leverage, it's a game of leverage and life. And it's about fucking, always keeping the upper hand. It's it's not just here, it's everywhere. And if you let these motherfuckers think that they have that leverage, it's only gonna grow above you. So it's just people understanding their worth. (Question)  And when you say your health hasn't been taken care of, can you elaborate on that? I don't, I don't need to, I mean, it's just, it. things should be easier. You know what I mean? Insurance should be fucking year round. The giant is growing and it's like, there's one thing that should be fucking paramount is these fighters health, you know? It's fucking our lives and our bodies are on the line every fucking time I step into that cage, and if we're not fucking protected, it's like, fuck, come on, wake up. ------------------------------------------- About the Labor Solidarity Podcast The Labor Solidarity Podcast highlights the work of labor leaders while discussing historic struggles and the importance of organizing with the goal of building international labor solidarity. This is Elise Bryant, president of the coalition of labor union women.  The coalition of labor union women was founded in 1974, the year after Roe V. Wade confirmed a woman's constitutional right to an abortion. The CLUW founding mothers believe in a woman's right to a safe termination of her pregnancy. And we still believe everyone has that right.  The U.S. Supreme court today overturned Roe V. Wade and Planned Parenthood versus Casey and declared that the U.S. constitution no longer protects the right to abortion. This decision marks the end of a constitutional right to abortion for people across the country. And now today, the court sets the stage for increased criminalization and policing of people for basic healthcare decisions.  We have to use our power to fix this.  It won't be quick or easy, but those of us, the majority in this country who support freedoms to control our body's lives and futures will succeed in reversing this.  We will march. We will protest. And most importantly, we will vote.  We will mobilize millions of women across the country to exercise their right to vote out any elected official who stands in the way of our freedom to choose what happens in our bodies. There was an old saying that goes, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.  We say, hell hath no fury like pro-choice women at the ballot box.  Get ready because we are coming for every anti-choice candidate and we will vote you out. So consider yourself warned.  No justice, no peace, no justice, no peace. Learn more at http://www.cluw.org/.

In March 1970 the Teaching Assistants Association at the University of Wisconsin went out on strike for twenty-four days. It was the first TA strike in the history of the United States; the union went on to represent Wisconsin TAs for over fifty years. The film that those students made back then has just been re-edited and re-released, so we sat down with legendary organizer Bob Muehlenkamp – who helped organize the TA union -- to talk about the strike, the film and the labor movement today. Bob wound up leading the Teaching Assistants Association and going on to a long career as a union organizer, he was the National Organizing Director at SEIU-1199, the hospital workers union, and then the Teamster's Organizing Director. Five labor-related films were inducted into the National Film Registry last year: The Murder of Fred Hampton (1971), Requiem-29 (1971), The Wobblies (1979), Chicana (1979) and Who Killed Vincent Chin? (1987). Films in the Registry are selected for their cultural, historic or aesthetic importance to preserve the nation's film heritage, and the Library of Congress, which maintains the Registry, says that the 2021 selections “represent one of the most diverse classes of films” yet, a fair description for a list that includes both 'Return of the Jedi' and ‘The Murder of Fred Hampton'. We asked Pat Aufderheide and Tom Zaniello to join us for a discussion about the labor selections. Pat is Professor of Communication Studies in the School of Communication at American University in Washington, D.C., where she founded the School's Center for Media & Social Impact. Tom is the author of a bunch of books on film and work, including Working Stiffs, Union Maids, Reds, and Riffraff, The Cinema of Globalization and The Cinema of the Precariat. Meg Cabot's bestselling series, The Princess Diaries spans almost two decades. The main character of the series, Mia, shares her unfiltered, innermost thoughts as private diary entries. Young adult readers of the books are privy to and captivated by Mia's internal and external landscape as she morphs from an awkward teen and into a royal princess. Author Elise Bryant was one such reader. In her book, Happily Ever Afters, the main character, Tessa, tackles similar teenage issues and emotions to Mia, but as a black girl. In this episode, Meg and Elise share their thoughts about why love stories belong in young adult libraries, why epistolary novels capture a reader's attention, and why a true representation of diversity can enhance the connection kids have with literature. [10:39] Both Elise and Meg describe their discomfort when coming to terms with their love of coming-of-age romance novels. [13:03] The Princess Diaries addresses real issues teenage girls face, such as love and sex. [17:01] True representations of diversity in books offers kids the opportunity to profoundly identify with characters. [21:12] Elise's forthcoming book, One True Loves is a companion novel to Happily Ever Afters. Continue Your Journey: Meg Cabot Elise Bryant HarperCollins @ReadingPod on Twitter Shareables: “I had notes in my diary from, like, Algebra. This is why I got such bad grades. I wasn't clearly paying attention. So, I thought — oh, I could just transfer this right into the book and it will be really funny. So everything in those books is taken right from my actual notebooks from high school.” — Meg Cabot, Author, The Princess Diaries “I loved rom-coms from a very early age but it was almost impossible at that point in the late '90s or early 2000s to find those books with girls that looked like me. And so I started, just like Tessa does in Happily Ever Afters, I started writing those stories myself. I would write the kind of voicey, funny, happy, joyful love stories that I love to read but then I would write them with a girl that was black like I am.” — Elise Bryant, Author, Happily Ever Afters “I think it's so important for kids to see themselves in all types of narratives, like being the hero, being the prince or princess, fighting bad guys, fighting monsters, solving mysteries and you know — falling in love. It helps kids to dream even bigger dreams when they see that reflected in stories. ” — Elise Bryant, Author, Happily Ever Afters

NOTE: This show was originally released on June 28, 2020 “The origin of the word strike goes back to the port of London in 1768, when dock workers and sailors struck. When sailors stop work, they take down the sails of their ship and that's called, nautically, striking your sail. And that term becomes the de facto word for all work stoppages.” Peter Cole, professor of history at Western Illinois University and author of two books on dockworkers, Wobblies on the Waterfront and Dockworker Power: Race and Activism in Durban and the San Francisco Bay Area, talks with Ben Blake and Alan Wierdak about the historic Juneteenth strike by dockworkers this year, and the long history of dockworker activism. We lost two giants of the labor movement this week, former AFL-CIO president John Sweeney and labor folksinger and activist Anne Feeney; on today's pod extra we remember them both. In our first segment, on this week's Your Rights At Work radio show (WPFW 89.3 FM in Washington, DC), Stephen Lerner, Marilyn Sneiderman, Harold Meyerson and Joe McCartin talked with hosts Chris Garlock and Ed Smith about Sweeney's legacy as a visionary labor leader. Stephen and Marilyn both worked closely with Sweeney, Harold covered him as a journalist and Joe, as our resident labor historian, provides the historical context for Sweeney's life and work in the movement. Click here for Sweeney tributes.  On that same show, Coalition of Labor Union Women president Elise Bryant told us about the free online screening by the DC Labor FilmFest of the new documentary, 9to5: The Story of A Movement, coming up this Tuesday at 7pm Eastern Standard Time. Elise also shared her memories of Anne Feeney, the labor folksinger and activist who died on Wednesday, and in our second segment, we've got an excerpt from the interview the We Do The Work radio show did with Anne recently. Later we chat about who does the cooking and her love for reading and how it has been passed down to her children. Highlights from labor radio and podcast shows around the country, part of the national Labor Radio Podcast Network of shows focusing on working people's issues and concerns. #LaborRadioPod If you are going through a union drive and you find that your boss is using some of these tactics, record everything. Put your phone in your pocket, record what they're saying to you, record your conversations with management because that's pretty much the only reason that we have this story is because we documented everything. This audio is from the Working People podcast, which took an inside look at unionbusting in North Carolina, and then became a target themselves. After the podcast featured recordings of the captive-audience meetings held by management at No Evil Foods, a vegan meat producer in North Carolina, the company threatened to sue and got the podcast host to pull down the show. It's hard to change your views on anything that, like, shocks your core belief, man. Yeah. And I mean, that is hard and I've definitely been there myself. Yeah. Part of it, part of it is admitting that you were wrong. Or that you were just taught wrong. On The Breaktime Breakdown podcast, host Jeremy Waugh and SMART Local 110 member Matt Gross get up close and personal in the current national debate over social justice, protests and overcoming their own inherent racism. Women, especially black women, have been a part of organizing together for many, many years, even though there were times post the civil rights movement, women, especially black women, were excluded from labor organizations generally. In 2020, Black women still only make 62 cents on the dollar compared to white, non-Hispanic men. In The Gap is a 12-episode podcast series presented by In These Times in recognition of these ongoing disparities. It's a gripping podcast – a new addition to the Labor Radio Podcast Network -- “about how and why Black women aren't getting their green.” When I first announced that I was going to run for business manager, I was told by some of the members, ‘You know, we respect you for wanting to run for this, but, respectfully, we need a man in there.' The women at work theme continues in this centennial year of women's suffrage on the latest edition of Talking SMART, with a conversation with female leaders and activists in the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation union who have taken the lead in creating new opportunities for women in the building trades. I can't separate being Black from being a woman; I have to do both of these things at the same time. And so now that's part of the work that we have to do is recognize that racism still exists. In the best of hearts, the progressive left, White people have to, like, look at themselves and examine how we played into the system and contributed or sustain racism and sexism within our union. That's Coalition of Labor Union Women president Elise Bryant, on the Solidarity Works podcast, on Women, Work, and Wielding Power in 2020. I guess this could be a lot like 1934; what was happening with the Great Depression and everything that was going on, and struggle was built out of hard times. Willie Adams, president of the International Longshore Workers Union, takes the long view on the current crisis, on The Docker Podcast, another new member of the Labor Radio Podcast Network. And on Labor History in 2:  Did you know that one of the main organizers for the march was a man by the name of Bayard Rustin?  Rick Smith on "The Man You've Never Heard Of, But Probably Should Have." Edited by Evan Papp of the Empathy Media Lab, a production house, artist's studio and an event space in Washington DC with a focus on labor, political economy, and art & culture.
