Tune in as Torry (Ready to Be Petty) rejoins Arthur for a review and recap of The Bromance Book Club, the 2019 second chance romance novel by Lyssa Kay Adams that explores what happens when a guy embarks on a plan to save his collapsing marriage by joining a club full of men who read romance books to educate themselves on love, women, and healthy masculinity. All the sexism that our society has aimed at the pumpkin spice latte, the pleasure of meeting side characters in a romance book who you realize will star in their own standalone sequels, and the many times when Arthur and Torry push for these characters (not only Gavin and Thea, but Liv as well) to seek therapy comprise a few of the topics that get discussed. TW: sexual content, past child neglect, bullying for a speech impediment, past infidelity, vomiting, profanity, and alcohol Spoilers start at 20:15 Show notes: • Lyssa Kay Adams's interview with The Everyday Magazine: https://theeverydaymagazine.co.uk/fictionandpoetry/talking-to-lyssa-kay-adams Good Word: • Torry: The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent • Arthur: GrayStillPlays's Happy Wheels playthroughs (Arthur has been watching them through the Tiktok account @gspfanpage) Reach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello! Summary: Happy Valentine's Day, friends! While neither Holly nor Devin are superfans of this holiday, they wanted to take some time to highlight marriage with two books this week. Oddly enough, Holly's thriller wheelhouse is chockablock full of married couples on the rocks, but Devin's romance genre almost never centers on a couple that have already found their happily ever after. All told, though, they find the relationship dynamics of a marriage as great drivers of plot and character across genres. Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:09): Devin discussed The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams, a novel that turns most romance novels on its head by centering on a man working to save his marriage via an unusual book club. Gavin Scott is Nashville Legends second baseman who thinks he has it all - a loving wife, twin daughters, and a career he loves. When Thea admits that their intimate relationship has never satisfied her, he's left desperate and on the path to divorce. To save it, he ends up in a circle of men who read romance novels to give them advice on how to navigate their relationships with their wives. Devin's key takeaways were: This is the first novel focused on men reading romance stories that Devin has been able to find, and the new perspective on the genre was refreshing and invigorating. She'd rather men not have to read romance novels to act as “manuals” for their own love lives, but hey, she'll take it. Gavin's wife Thea carries trauma that adds feasibility to the storyline. Her sister, however, was so anti-Gavin and pro-divorce that at times it was off-putting and unnatural. Adams had a feminist focus throughout the book and clearly strove to drive messages home about intimacy, vulnerability, and relationships. It was preachy at times but ultimately the execution on the rest of the novel was a success. The Dagger (17:44): Holly discussed The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey, a sci-fi novel following Evelyn Caldwell, a scientist who has discovered how to clone human adults. Her recent awards and professional success is marred when she discovers that her soon-to-be ex-husband has been cheating on her… with a clone of herself named Martine. As Evelyn works to process these recent life changes and come to terms with everything, she gets a call one day from a panicked Martine; it turns out Nathan is dead and the two women must come together to clean up the mess and hide the crime. Holly's key takeaways were: With a fairly unusual premise, this novel dives deeply into key themes and commentary of our society, principally gender norms for women and women in marriage. Gailey explores what it means to be a woman through Evelyn and her clone, a woman re-programmed to be more docile and subservient than Evelyn is naturally. Through the science of cloning, the reader also confronts ideas and challenges around identity - what makes you, you? What role does biology vs. experience play in making us who we are, and how much of a choice do we have? Be mindful if you are sensitive to gore, and make sure you listen through the very end of our episode for a spoiler-filled tidbit from Holly that blew Devin's mind! Hot On the Shelf (35:52): Devin: Lunar Love by Lauren Kung Jessen Holly: Elsewhere by Alexis Schaitkin What's Making Our Hearts Race (38:05): Devin: Glass Onion on Netflix Holly: Fleischman is in Trouble on Hulu Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.
First rule of book club. You don't talk about book club. Just kidding! Get your honky-tonks and washi tape ready, because we're headed to Gavin and Thea's for some miscommunication and stolen apples! A secret romance book club made up of Nashville's top alpha men aim to coach Gavin using 'Courting The Countess', a steamy Regency that's sure to fix his marriage. But can Thea be won back after all that 'faking it' drama? Will her sister Liv ever mind her own business? Come sit in on discussing Rose's pick for spoilers and hot takes!

Two weeks ago I didn't think I'd even have an august wrap-up but somehow I managed to read five books in the second half of the month and what a wrap up we have! Every Summer After by Carley Fortune was the perfect end of summer read that I finished in under 24-hours, while Jenny Bayliss' latest book Meet Me Under the Mistletoe, that releases September 27th started getting me in the holiday spirit early. Denise Williams has a cute trilogy of flight-inspired novellas that got me out of my reading slump and it was Lyssa Kay Adams with the third book in her Bromance Book Club series that left me in fits of laughter. Finally, Angie Hockman had a very Ohio-centric new book Dream On that put a fun twist on what happens when you meet your dream man. Let's get into it! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Many people may assume that romance novels are exclusively for women. But one study found 18% of romance readers are men. "The Bromance Book Club" author Lyssa Kay Adams joins us along with Jason Rogers, who started his own real-life bromance book club. And, for the first time, workers at an Amazon warehouse have voted to unionize. The historic election was on Staten Island in New York. Stephan Bisaha, wealth and poverty reporter for Gulf States Newsroom, joins us.
"The Bromance Book Club" is a fun, funny, and sexy novel about a group of men who help their friend save his marriage with the help of tropes from the saucy romances they read together. It has absolutely no connection whatsoever with either the 1984 animated film The Transformers: The Movie or the more recent live action Michael Bay Transformers movies, so while some light discussion of those lovable robots in disguise is inevitable, please don't expect TOO much Transformers talk in this episode. This week we're joined by Mel Gill founder of the Latina-owned romance bookstore and subscription box company Steamy Lit. Together we unpack the romance of it all. In our own ways, we're all looking for love and connection. We want to feel, to express, and to share and receive love in ways that make us feel whole. It's no surprise that we're drawn to the stories we find in romance novels, but being a proud Romance reader doesn't always come easy.We talk through the stories, the shame, and the ways we've learned to embrace ourselves, our self-love, our self-pleasure. Jen and Jackie have a quick discussion on some twitter drama that went down in January involving a male reader trying to break into the romance sphere. As with all twitter drama, his tweet got blown way out of proportion, and romancelandia flocked to the defense of romance heroes everywhere...thereby effectively gatekeeping a sphere that claims to be one of the most welcoming genres out there. Let's get into it.Tweet in question:no-one:romance books: this man is so big. he is just so huge. he towers over me. all i can think about is how big he is. his arms are big. but i have to contain this feeling. we work together! yet my mind is imagining a life with mr big in all his enormousness. he is so... big.7:06 PM · Jan 25, 2022· 2,334 Retweets 3,281 Quote Tweets 21.1K LikesWhat do you guys think? Valentine's Day vibes on this week's podcast, with Tim Xayasomloth, bookseller at Changing Hands Bookstore. Tim has become known as "The Romance Guy" at the store ever since he challenged himself to read genres outside his fantasy and science fiction favorites, and found he loved the contemporary romance! Comparing a romance novel to a tasty margarita that “goes down easy,” Tim explains to Olivia why he believes men can benefit from reading romance to understand how to be a better guy and better partner. Tim talks about the book that started him off: “The Bromance Book Club” by Lyssa Kay Adams, and why some of the romance tropes like enemies to lovers are so enjoyable. Tim also recommends “The Right Swipe” by Alisha Rai, “The Kiss Quotient” by Helen Hoang, and Rachel Lynn Solomon's “The Ex Talk.” This podcast episode is dedicated to Elizabeth Stewart, Margaret's sister, who shared her love for books not only with her little sister, but through her career as a librarian. Found family, partners, true-blue friends: it's all about the groups of people who claim us, warm our hearts, and have our backs no matter what, who help us feel that we belong.https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comRemember the TV show Queer as Folk? It originated in the UK, and there was a US version too. Its group of friends fits this trope so well. My high school crush/date came out to me on prom night so I felt a bit like Daphne in this clip: happy and proud for him, but a bit disappointed, too. The TV show Friends is all about this trope, too, of course. My BFF loves motorcycle club romances, which embody this trope as well. All the Tropes on band of brothers is great, and tvtropes.org also explores a band of brothers trope off-shoot called True Companions.Four Weddings and a Funeral is still charming and touching, with one of the best “we belong together” found-family examples in any rom-com.Bromance Book Club is the first book in the Bromance Book Club series by Lyssa Kay Adams. Its band of brothers is romance gold—needless to say, Netflix snapped up the rights so the story will be coming to a tiny screen near you sometime soon. Daniel is a steady, wise and affectionate presence in the Loveless Brothers series by Roxie Noir, and his story, Best Fake Fiancé is one of my favorites, along with Levi’s and Eli's stories.Jo Beverley’s Malloren series is one of my top favorite romance series ever. Devilish, the oldest Malloren brother Lord Rothgar's story, is one romance I can happily read over and over.Tessa Dare’s Spindle Cove series centers on an English village in the Regency era with blue stockings and shy, spirited women who don't quite fit in as its residents, along with the group of aristocratic men who love them. They're full of wit and whimsy, the perfect place to start reading historical romance. The Beautiful series by writing duo Christina Lauren is quite a ride: spicy hot and kinky (unlike their more recent books) with "naughty" tropes that ratchet up the fantasy.I plan to explore this fantastic series in an upcoming episode, but for now, let me say that Chloe Liese's Bergman brothers series has this trope in spades and it's another, new top favorite romance series.

Work by marginalized people has frequently been considered unimportant or devalued in the rare book world - learn how Rebecca's work (part detective, part scholar, part marketer) is important not just for romance scholars, but for all of us, and how we all have a role to play.Rebecca Romney is a rare books specialist who has been working on a catalogue surveying the history of popular romance since 2016, covering first editions of major works in the genre from the 18th century to the year 2000. If you want something different in life, change it—whether it's your career or the patriarchy. Or if you're our guest, author Lyssa Kay Adams, both. The last couple of years were pretty major for Lyssa. She pitched a story on Twitter as a relatively unknown author, was signed with an agent within two days, received a three-book deal with a publisher, and–oh, yeah–actually wrote the first novel, "The Bromance Book Club." (Not to mention her second novel, "Undercover Bromance," which comes out March 10.) So, yeah—she's been pretty busy. Lyssa isn't afraid of change. She left her career as a journalist to become published romance novelist, and the risk paid off. Her novel has received numerous accolades and was listed No. 1 on Amazon's "Best Romances of 2019." But how does one navigate so much change in so little time? This episode, we sit down with Lyssa to discuss her latest novel, the creative process, dealing with major life changes, feminism in the romance genre, and—of course—her dog. Mentioned in this episode: - "The Bromance Book Club" by Lyssa Kay Adams - "Undercover Bromance" by Lyssa Kay Adams - Amazon: Best Romances of 2019 - Glamour: In These Books, Happily Ever After Is Just the Beginning
