Mahmoud Khalil, likely days away from the birth of his first child, is still being held in Louisiana as his lawyers fight for his freedom after a judge ordered that he can be deported. Just Monday, Columbia student Moshen Mahdawi was detained by ICE during a regular interview as part of the citizenship process. Hundreds of students from more than 90 institutions across the country have had their student visas revoked. And the Trump Administration is doubling down on the disappearance of hundreds to CECOT, the maximum-security prison in El Salvador. With Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele by his side on Monday in the White House, Trump suggested that US citizens could be sent to the notorious prison, saying “Homegrowns are next. The homegrowns. You gotta build about five more places. It's not big enough.”At the same meeting, Bukele said he would not return Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who fled his home 14 years ago to escape gang violence and had an order granting him the right to stay in the United States. Garcia is married with three children and works as a first-year apprentice with SMART Local 100, the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers union. The Trump administration is ignoring multiple courts who have said the deportation of Garcia must be overturned, including the Supreme Court. Is a Constitutional crisis around the corner? Is it here? And what should we make of the threats to continue these deportations and disappearances and expand them to US citizens? Support the show

It's Casual Friday (relatively speaking), and Sam and Emma start the show with some glimmers of good news on the immigration front, following the Supreme Court's ruling that the Trump administration must make an attempt to bring home Kilmar Armando Ábrego García. The government already admitted they deported Garcia to a maximum security prison in El Salvador because of an administrative error. Sean McGarvey, the president of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers where Garcia is a member, has demanded he be brought home.   Sam and Emma are then joined by The Nation's national affairs correspondent Jeet Heer to break down the implications of Trump's chaotic tariff policy, which is accelerating de-dollarization, including among the U.S.'s most (normally) steadfast allies. They also break down the warped logic of Trump's immigration crackdown, including the weaponization of the immigration system for the sake of Israel. Jeet makes the point that both Democrats and Republicans have participated in the weaponization of faux concerns about antisemitism which has brought us to this moment. Jeet also gives his opinion of the much-discussed Abundance Agenda.   Check out Jeet's writing here: https://www.thenation.com/authors/jeet-heer/   In the fun half, Sam and Emma react to billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya complaining that Democrats never gave him access to the Oval Office despite the fact that he donated millions of dollars to their campaigns. They also take in Jesse Waters' breakdown of Trump's bizarre cabinet meeting, an all-star sycophantic ceremony with highlights from Elon Musk, RFK Jr. Pam Bondi & Pete Hegseth, each one trying to out-headline the other. They also explore the evolving world of artificial intelligence, contrasting its limitations with human intelligence, and consider its impact on creative expression. Connect with Aaron on Twitter at @Aaron_Lowry for more insights into his projects and ideas. Check out this GPT we trained on this conversation Timestamps 00:00 - Stewart Alsop introduces Aaron Lowry, discussing their previous conversations and current interests. They mention the makerspace and complexities in physical and software creation, while Lowry shares insights on sheet metal work and its principles. 00:05 - Stewart talks about challenges in crafting and how quick access to information on computers may impact patience. He appreciates Lowry's language of attunement and asks for Lowry's views on AI, given that he hasn't been directly involved in building it. 00:10 - Lowry discusses intelligence, consciousness, and the reciprocal relationship between agent and environment. He explores challenges in defining intelligence, noting the mirror-like effect of AI reflecting our own limitations. 00:15 - Stewart discusses how filtering AI models reduces their utility. Lowry describes prompt injection as a way to navigate AI limitations while emphasizing the importance of understanding the parameters that bound the data set. 00:20 - Lowry acknowledges the energy required to maintain AI models, comparing it to the efficiency of the human brain. He stresses the probabilistic nature of human intelligence versus the deterministic nature of machine learning. 00:25 - Lowry distinguishes between the infinite potential of probabilistic intelligence and deterministic frameworks. He compares real-world interaction to a video game, noting how deterministic thinking can make people behave like NPCs. 00:30 - They discuss navigating principles versus propositions, likening it to piloting a sailboat. Maintaining direction requires continuous feedback and adaptation. 00:35 - Stewart differentiates between propositional and participatory knowing, noting AI's strong grasp of the former. Lowry argues that perspective is assigned in AI models but participation remains absent. 00:40 - Lowry describes the truck he is restoring, noting the blend of modern engineering and aesthetic choices. He shares his process of acquiring knowledge from books and the internet. 00:45 - They discuss Brian Rommel's approach to training language models with high-quality data from the past, emphasizing the importance of data quality. 00:50 - They discuss how AI models can synthesize a broader spectrum of perspectives than any individual. Lowry advocates for plurality in models, warning against a single authoritative perspective. 00:55 - They delve into AI's impact on art. Despite the democratization of creative tools, Lowry asserts that authentic artistic inspiration is still necessary. He highlights the empty appeal of AI-generated perfection lacking the soul of human art. Key insights Principles vs. Propositions in Problem-Solving: Aaron Lowry emphasizes the importance of working with first principles rather than rigid propositions. He compares this to piloting a sailboat, where adaptability and constant course correction are crucial, and stresses that a principle-based approach allows for dynamic navigation of complex challenges. Sheet Metal Work as a Metaphor: Lowry draws parallels between his experience working with sheet metal and broader life lessons. He finds that patience, precision, and an understanding of thermodynamics are essential when shaping materials and that these skills have broader applications, like aligning with fundamental principles in all aspects of life. AI and Human Intelligence Contrasts: Despite not being directly involved in building AI, Lowry offers a thoughtful analysis of its relationship to human intelligence. He argues that AI can mirror our limitations and reflects how intelligence is both probabilistic and deterministic, giving us powerful tools but also raising ethical and practical challenges. Guardrails and Filtering in AI Models: The conversation explores how filtering in AI reduces its utility. While Lowry acknowledges that filters are essential for contextualizing data sets, he also notes that prompt injection helps circumvent these limitations, revealing the inherent challenges in fully controlling AI output. Plurality of Perspectives in AI: Both Alsop and Lowry agree that multiple AI models are necessary to capture a range of perspectives, and relying on a single authoritative model could be dangerous. They highlight that AI models should maintain diversity to better reflect the broad spectrum of human experience. AI's Role in Creative Expression: They touch upon the potential of AI to create art, noting how it can democratize creative tools. However, Lowry points out that even with high technical proficiency, AI-generated art often lacks the emotional resonance that comes from genuine human inspiration and participation. Blending Aesthetics with Engineering: Lowry shares his approach to rebuilding classic vehicles, which blends modern engineering with aesthetic considerations. His goal is to maintain the beauty of the original designs while ensuring functionality, illustrating the delicate balance between creativity and technical precision.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Thursday, Jan. 18  Discover Science on a Sphere--a unique tool for teaching weather patterns and forecasting. A Wheeling roofing company prides itself on serving WV residences. And enjoy a disco light show as you boogie down the hill at Snow Riders in Harpers Ferry…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV TECH PARK – Teachers, are you looking for a unique educational tool?  Science on a Sphere at the West Virginia Regional Technology Park in South Charleston brings weather science to life and fosters a love for learning and exploration among students. SOS was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The spherical display system uses multiple projectors to showcase dynamic visualizations of Earth, its atmosphere, and other planetary data. The National Weather Service and Tech Park teams have developed a dynamic presentation that appeals to a wide variety of age groups. By incorporating real-time weather data and simulations, students explore the complexities of weather patterns, understand the science behind forecasting and witness the impact of extreme weather and climate change.  After the SOS presentation concludes, students and visitors can apply what they've learned during a tour of the National Weather Service's local forecast office. The latest offering from family adventure resort River Riders, Snow Riders gives an exhilarating downhill run that's three football fields long—nearly a sixth of a mile. Tubers enjoy up to 12 machine-groomed lanes, depending on conditions, and a Magic Carpet conveyor lift makes for a quick and easy ride to the next run. Snowmaking means the downhill fun can go on even when the weather is only marginally wintry. One fun feature of the tubing park is its Downhill Disco laser light show, a nighttime LED colored light show timed to change to the beat of the music. And that lends itself to fun themed nights—already planned for 2024 are an '80s Night, with all of the happy nostalgia of that decade's music, and a First Responders' Night, with a customized red and blue light show. Snow Riders is open every day in January and February, conditions permitting. Tickets must be purchased in advance online and include lift tickets, tubes, and, on request, helmets. Already this fall, all the resorts in West Virginia have had their snow guns operating, getting everything ready for those first turns of the season. Last year, the amount of natural snowfall was the lowest in recent memory, but due to seasonal temperatures at the higher elevations, all the resorts were able to produce tons of man-made snow, allowing skiers, snowboarders and snowtubers to enjoy time on the slope from Thanksgiving to the end of March. One side of the industry in West Virginia that is solely dependent on Mother Nature to provide natural snow is cross country and snowshoeing. The word out of Tucker County at White Grass Touring Center is that almost a foot of snow already this year has allowed some back country enthusiasts to break out their cross country boards and slide around a bit.
