Chris Chandler is a maker of new things out of two things, out of three things, out of four — one of the world's consummate collaborators, sharing tracks with luminaries, fusing the verse he inhabits with the chords and choruses of artists such as Dan Bern, Jim Infantino, Peter Yarrow, Anne Feeney and Paul Benoit. I've known Chris a bit over the years, and years ago shared stages with him here and there, and I've always been moved and awed by what he manages to do with a pair of vocal cords and the truth. But I've never heard his full story or gotten under the hood with the head that makes it all work. Christa Ludwig, celebrated two weeks ago, is not the only great singer and musician to have departed this earthly realm in recent months. This episode presents a wide cross-section of great musicians we have lost, not just singers, and not just classical musicians. Included are many opera singers who today are less well-known, including Sándor Sólyom Nagy, Libuše Domanínská, Margherita Roberti, Tamara Sorokina, Angelo Mori, Marcella Reale, Biserka Cvejić, and Michel Trempont. A wide range of composers including Ennio Morricone, Elias Rahbani, and Harold Budd, also receive a nod, as do instrumentalists Leon Fleisher, Osian Ellis, and Julian Bream, and non-classical artists such as Anne Feeney, Charley Pride, Gerry Marsden, Jimmie Rodgers, and SOPHIE. Only once before on the podcast have I presented such a kaleidoscopic memorial episode; it is good to be reminded of the full range of expression pursued by great musicians of all stripes. Guest stars today include Barbara Hendricks, Muriel Smith, and John Shirley-Quirk. The tributes continue next week. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel’s lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. At Countermelody’s core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. In our latest episode, we talk with two professors with exemplary records at Collin College, outside Dallas, who were recently fired for criticizing the school's COVID policies. Audra Heaslip and Suzanne Jones (@Sesjones), both longtime professors, questioned President Neil Matkin's dismissal of COVID concerns, his insistence on returning to in-person classes, and his refusal to create a COVID dashboard. Matkin also withheld information from the campus community about a faculty member who had died from COVID for weeks. And he cited Heaslip's and Jones's membership in the Texas Faculty Association, an education union, as a reason for their termination. Heaslip and Jones were looking out for the safety and health of the campus community and were fired for making Collin look bad, as Matkin told them. At Collin College, concern over COVID, being in a union, and expressing your right to free speech can get you fired. We also pay tribute to legendary Pittsburgh folksinger, union maid and hell raiser Anne Feeney who passed away last week from complications related to COVID-19. We lost two giants of the labor movement this week, former AFL-CIO president John Sweeney and labor folksinger and activist Anne Feeney; on today's pod extra we remember them both. In our first segment, on this week's Your Rights At Work radio show (WPFW 89.3 FM in Washington, DC), Stephen Lerner, Marilyn Sneiderman, Harold Meyerson and Joe McCartin talked with hosts Chris Garlock and Ed Smith about Sweeney's legacy as a visionary labor leader. Stephen and Marilyn both worked closely with Sweeney, Harold covered him as a journalist and Joe, as our resident labor historian, provides the historical context for Sweeney's life and work in the movement. Click here for Sweeney tributes.  On that same show, Coalition of Labor Union Women president Elise Bryant told us about the free online screening by the DC Labor FilmFest of the new documentary, 9to5: The Story of A Movement, coming up this Tuesday at 7pm Eastern Standard Time. Men hans sånger lever.
