The holiday season is full of magic for Elisse Joson, thanks to her beautiful moments of motherhood and the blessings in her career. In this episode, she talks about being a mom to two-year-old Felize, what Christmas is like for them, and what she and partner McCoy de Leon look forward to in the next years.
Today's conversation with Elisse Miki is a special edition podcast episode that we are affectionately dubbing a ‘geek out', and we want to hear what you think! This episode is the first of what will be a four-part series together over the next year, and could eventually turn into its very own show if people like you are curious and hungry to listen to more in-depth anatomy and physiology-based discussions. If getting nerdy is your jam, you may even want to start with our previously recorded chats before hitting play on this latest one! https://wholehorse.ca/episode-38/ https://wholehorse.ca/episode-88/ https://wholehorse.ca/episode-99/ We opened up this episode with a look at senior horse management and the crucial role of mobility in maintaining health well into the golden years. Elisse, who's herd ranges in age from 22 up to 37, shared about the track system she's set up at her farm and the focus she puts on enrichment and flow in her horses' environment. This led us beautifully into a discussion on the role of circulation and fluid flow as the underpinnings of a vital body, and why assessing for and restoring vitality from a bodywork perspective is such an important (and yet often overlooked) starting point for treatment. I shared around what is known in osteopathy as the Rule of the Artery, and how understanding that the body prioritizes the function and protection of vessels (arteries, veins and nerves) begins to illuminate why we see certain bracing patterns show up as well as avenues through which we can successfully help unwind them. We round out our chat with a look at the three diaphragms, and invite you to join us in an upcoming webinar where we'll be sharing two vitality techniques. We would also love to see you in our 2024 Cranial Therapy Certification program - applications are now open: https://www.equilibriatherapeutics.com/equine-craniosacral You can register for the equine cranial webinar with Elisse and Alexa at https://bit.ly/cstwebinar Find out more about how to register for the intro webinar and Q&A at https://eqtherapeutics.thinkific.com/courses/intro-craniosacral-therapy-webinar And please send me an email at alexa@alexalinton.com or shoot me a message on social media if you'd like to hear more episodes like this one! Are you a techno-optimist or a techno-pessimist? Or even a total Luddite? Does Chat GPT excite you or completely freak you out? Our theme this month was suggested by our patron Elisse, who asked us to talk about Chat GPT in particular. We thought this was a great jumping off point for a bigger conversation about the relationship between art and technology, the moral panic that always accompanies developments in Artificial Intelligence, and our relationship to new technologies in general. Listen for this plus our own dream AI innovations, and all the usual recommendations.
I would go to church where it felt like EVERY SINGLE sermon and lesson was about the beauty of families and how a husband's duty is to protect and love his wife. But I didn't have that. Church quickly turned from my refuge to a place that brought pain. I had lived my life exactly the way God had asked me to live it. I did everything right. Yet the love I was promised was replaced by severe mental, emotional, and verbal abuse.

Me and my partner in all things equine body work are back again for another deep-dive into geeky territory! Elisse Miki of Equilibria Therapeutics is back for her fourth episode as we dig right into one of our favourite subjects, cranial therapy, specifically applying to horses. If you've been curious about why cranial work is so effective, what mechanisms are actually being worked with and how they function to help or hinder our horses, the fascinating anatomical landscape of the cranium and spinal cord through an osteopathic lens, and how this work might help your own horses or your clients, this episode definitely worth a listen (or two!). As a human and equine therapist with over 15 years of experience working with clients in a therapeutic setting, Elisse brings a wide variety of modalities into her practice. She began her career working as an Exercise Physiologist having completed her Bachelors in Kinesiology then went on to obtain her Registered Massage Therapy Licence. She has since gone on to complete Diplomas in Equine Therapy, Equine Craniosacral, and currently in the process of completing both her Human and Equine Osteopathy Diplomas concurrently. Elisse is also an Instructor of RMT at the West Coast College of Massage Therapy and a Certified Equine Assisted Learning Instructor. Some of her clients include the Langley Equestrian Academy, Cloverdale Rodeo, and the International Professional Rugby 7s teams. Her current focus lies in research and development of current standards of practice in the equine industry. Elisse hosts clinics for horse owners and will be offering continuing education courses for existing health care professionals and equine therapists starting in January 2020. We're getting geeky again! Elisse Miki of Equilibria Therapeutics and I venture into more of our favourite territory, this time focusing on the nervous system, neuroplasticity, motor control, rehabilitation, what cranial work has to do with any of this, and all things neuroscience. With a herd of seniors (one over 40 years old!) that love to move and are getting more agile and fit every time I see them, Elisse is definitely doing something very right. Rehabilitation of horses is a huge topic, and this episode might give you some clues on why your horse is not recovering from an injury or accident the way you thought they would, and some simple exercises that incorporate motor control and neuroplasticity to start shifting gears, even if your horse is on stall rest. Some of her clients include the Langley Equestrian Academy, Cloverdale Rodeo, and the International Professional Rugby 7s teams. In today's episode, Kenny Vaughn had a chat with Elisse Douglass, co-founder of the Oakland Black Business Fund. She is an established real estate professional and has extensive experience in private equity impact investing. While at Haas, Elisse served as co-president of the Black Business Student Association together with Kenny.Elisse talked a little about growing up in Philadelphia, what made her take architecture in college, and then going into real estate development. She also shared the story of why she ended up at Haas and what she loves about Oakland.Elisse also opened up about how the pandemic has taught her to re-evaluate her decisions. You're also going to love the story of how Elisse made it an opportunity to support local black businesses.Episode Quotes:Her biggest takeaway having gone through the pandemic:"I think we've all just had to face our realities in a way that can be uncomfortable. It makes us reevaluate every decision we've made. For me, I've had to reevaluate why I live where I live and where I work and who was in my life, and the different relationships that I had. So, my takeaway from that is just being more selective about those things and being more appreciative and gracious to what I have, where I am, who I have in my life, what I'm doing. It's just been a real eye-opener."On her experience as co-president of the Black Business Student Association:"I think it showed me that there's a place in the world for people who are thinking about that whole idea of doing well and doing good. There's a place to be impactful, to think about innovation, and not just for innovation's sake but innovation for all our sakes. That was the greatest thing coming out of that experience."On raising funds, especially from the Haas community:"If someone is willing to do it, let's get it done. And what I think people were really responding to is the problem was bigger than just broken windows. We all know that it's a systemic problem, and let's put real dollars and energy and impact into that."Why black businesses matter:"When we talk about why black businesses matter and why it's important to apply resources to this, one of the most important things is about innovation and resilience. So, black people sort of lead culture and innovation in a lot of different ways that often aren't monetized, and they're not appreciated. On the other hand, when you talk about resilience, if you look at the structural issues that black people face as entrepreneurs in terms of access to capital, in terms of credit, in terms of all these different things, it's incredible that we have any black businesses at all. Yet we do. And many of them thrive, and they grow despite all of the changes. They're still finding a way."Show Links:LinkedIn ProfileOakland Black Business FundSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations

Elisse Glennon is the founder and Executive Director of the New Jersey Sharing Network Foundation. The NJ Sharing Network is a non-profit organization for the recovery and placement of donated organs and tissues. The foundation, where Elisse presides, is dedicated to increasing the numbers of lives saved through research, family support, public awareness, and education.4000 New Jersey residents alone are waiting on the transplant list. So when COVID threatened the entire national healthcare system, Elisse and her team of 180 committed professionals plus volunteers had to navigate incredibly shaky seas. The big question was, would donations plummet, devastating the chances of everyone on that list, desperately in need of a transplant? Not on Elisse’s watch. Instead, the NJ Sharing Network had a record year. And in this conversation, Elisse teaches us precisely how they did it.Now, you might be tired of hearing about “mindset shifts” from the self-help community. But Elisse and her team are proof that it’s often mindset, not tactics, that carry the day.In particular, pay close attention to how she describes the process of asking grieving families for a donation, and the shift from viewing it as a burden to recognizing it as a gift.Connect with Elisse: Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/NJSharingNetworkWebsite: http://www.njsharingnetwork.org/Watch instead of listen: https://beyondnetworkingpodcast.com/elisse-glennon/

Do fairytale endings happen? Sure, but only in the movies - and this, unfortunately, is real life. Elisse was all too familiar with the reality surrounding her life in what seemed like forever ago. A husband not tending to his internal struggles, a religious community that prided in family having judgmental views and commenting on her every move, and a future that seemed like it was headed nowhere. Elisse had had enough. Luckily real life and ironically the 80s band Real Life had a common solution to Elisse's prayers: Send Me An Angel. A childhood friend, turned support system, had Elisse's back every step of the way. Although, Angel didn't come without his own scars to deal with. He also needed the warmth and care of a world that was too cold for him to live in any more. So what started off as a shoulder to lean on for each other, had blossomed into a love no outside force could extinguish. It's a rollercoaster of a story filled with betrayal, loss, arrogance, "the audacity", but most importantly redemption. This couple proves that fairytale endings can come true and we should all strive to reach true love & happiness in our lives. Well, what are you waiting for?!?! Listen in to hear this amazing story!

Oh wow. This episode was off the charts cool! Elisse Miki and Josh Nichol have teamed up to build a bridge between the anatomy and physiology of the heart and horsemanship, and I can't get enough. Enjoy this awesome collaboration! As a human and equine therapist with over 15 years of experience working with clients in a therapeutic setting, Elisse Miki brings a wide variety of modalities into her practice. Her current focus lies in research and development of standards of practice in the equine industry. Learn more at www.equilibriatherapeutics.com In Josh's words: “I like to think of myself as a professional student of the horse; learning is what I do first and teaching is second. Mentoring people, building relationships and watching growth is truly my passion. I currently teach clinics throughout Canada in the summer and work out of our home ranch in the winter, helping people develop their relationships through horsemanship. This style of horsemanship is very relational, it allows you to see yourself through your horse and continues as you advance through the process. Mastery in horsemanship begins with a commitment to bettering ourselves! This starts with taking ownership and responsibility for our part of the story, thus interpreting the horse's actions and performance differently. When we are aware of – and work on developing – our side of the relationship, we truly facilitate not only growth in our horses, but growth in ourselves. Good horsemanship challenges everything about our inner person. What an amazing gift: progressing in our horsemanship goes hand in hand with developing our best self!” Learn more about Josh at https://www.joshnichol.com

ECGs have discovered that the electrical field of the heart is 60 times greater than the brain's electrical activity… Have you ever stopped to consider what the ‘actual’ role of the heart in a horse actually is? We mean, yes, it pumps blood… But could there be more to it? Elisse Miki, Equine Osteopath, will be joining us to teach us how she resets the beat of the heart to match the horse’s breathing and how that plays a role in the connection. She’ll be chatting about some simple techniques to help us check & restore heart balance in your own horses… And that’s only the beginning... Join us to find out the role of the heart and how you too can restore heart balance in your own horses for a much deeper connection with them!
