The history of money isn't just an Economics story, but it's a cultural and philosophical one, too. Felix Martin, a columnist for Reuters, charts this history in his book, Money: The Unauthorized Biography – From Coinage to Cryptocurrencies, and argues that money as a social institution has always been wielded as a political instrument. Felix and Greg discuss the determining factors of money's value, some of the key moments in the history of currency, and what could be done to improve modern financial banking systems.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Money as a credit relationship21:08: There is this great value in thinking about money as a credit relationship. And the real value is to think about two dimensions. One dimension is the creditworthiness of the issuer…[21:52] And another dimension I think conceptually, you can think of them as different. Some people like to think of them the same, but I think the difference is the liquidity question. Creditworthiness is about this bilateral relationship between you and the central bank. And then there's this question of how many other people in the network will accept this in payment of goods or services? And that's this sort of liquidity question. And, so these are two factors which are behind that. They're all subsumed under this (V) in the Fisher equation, but you can break them down a bit conceptually, I think, in terms of money as credit is useful to do that.Money is a social institution04:02: I believe that money is a social institution, a communal fiction, then a history of money is not a history of coins and notes and that kind of thing. It's an intellectual history. It's a history of these ideas and these institutions and where they come from. What is the whole point of banking?52:00: The whole point of banking and its historical origin is precisely the flexibility of the balance sheets of the banks. The whole way that the capitalist economy works, what is useful about banks and the reason they exist is precisely that they are able to expand and contract their balance sheets in line with the needs of trade.Theories around money are useful but contingent18:22: It's not that the Fisher equation or the quantity theory of money are not useful. All these theories of money are very useful for interpreting and predicting given points in time. But they are contingent.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah HarariJohn LockeThe Nature of Money by Geoffrey InghamWalter BagehotEcu de marcGuest Profile:Author Page at ReutersFelix Martin's WebsiteFelix Martin on LinkedInFeliz Martin on XHis Work:Money: The Unauthorized Biography – From Coinage to CryptocurrenciesArticles on Financial TimesArticles on Muck Rack

“For too long in this country, we have indulged in a fight over redistribution. Now, we need to focus on growth, not just how we tax and spend," said Kawsi Kwarteng on September 23. Unfortunately for the chancellor, the bond markets didn't agree with him; yields ballooned, and a few days later he was out, followed swiftly by his boss Liz Truss. Bitcoin's role in the evolution of money

Is Bitcoin just another kind of money? An undergraduate module dedicated to Bitcoin at the University of Exeter sheds light on the question by delving into the history of money. The module, called Bitcoin, Money and Trust was launched in 2018 after a high demand from students to learn about Bitcoin. Dr. Jack Rogers, a senior lecturer in economics at the University of Exeter launched the Bitcoin module as a precursor to an MSc Fintech course which he leads. He says participation increased ten fold in recent years - from less than 50 students when it launched to 700 this year.   Despite the impressive turnout, Jack believes that “probably the big number is partly driven for the wrong reasons - all the various hype and sense that you could get rich from this.” On this week's episode of CoinGeek Conversations, Charles Miller talks to Jack about the University of Exeter's Bitcoin teaching, the evolution of money and the role Bitcoin plays.  Jack points to the emergence of central banking as a step change in history. He quoted Felix Martin, the author of Money: The Unauthorized Biography, whom he recalls speaking of a “compromise power structure” between the central bank and the government. For the first time in centuries, a decoupling between money and the state is happening before our eyes, Charles suggests. Jack agrees, saying “a new technology that allows people to potentially pay each other without using existing fiat-based systems” has indeed raised fundamental questions. He pertains to the author's view on cryptocurrency and how it's lead to a disruption in the payment system which central banks have been in control of for a long time. Jack believes the disruption in central banking was inevitable eventually: “I think this stuff, central bank, digital currencies and things that you see now, maybe it was coming anyway… I think the emergence of Bitcoin and all the hype and everything has kind of brought that forward.” Based on Jack's comments, it's safe to say that the future of money will depend on the outcome of the competition between blockchain-based payment systems. For now, he admits no-one is certain as to where Bitcoin is heading. “One of my students did a great dissertation on this, speculating that in 20 years time, will there be loads of different types of money? What does it look like? I mean, no-one can really say.”Dr. Jack Rogers is co-authoring a textbook alongside Brendan Lee and Neil Smith. The book will be out by the end of 2023.

Few things are more ubiquitous than money.  Yet what seems so simple, can often become so complex.  Money is far more than just the notes and coins we carry in our pockets.  It’s part of a complex system of debits and credits and clearing. Just look at the workings of Bitcoin and you start to see how those notes and coins are really just tokens and symbols that represent a much larger and more complex world of money. That's the world that Felix Martin ushers us into in Money: The Unauthorized Biography. My conversation with Felix Martin:

Between the idea And the reality Between the motion And the act Falls the shadow. The words of TS Eliot provide a cue for this playful, challenging and touching anniversary series celebrating 20 years of Between the Ears. Radio 3's showcase for adventurous feature-making was launched in October 1993 with a 'piece for radio', by the composer Ian Gardiner. 'Monument', which was conceived as a kind of London symphony, received the prestigious Prix Italia the following year. Shadowplay offers a new four-part 'symphony of voices', exploring the shadows that may fall between the appearance of things and their reality. Making use of the full palette available to the radio producer - documentary, fiction, music, pure sound - four feature-makers address our values, our identities, our romantic inclinations and our sense of worth. In the first movement 'Theme and Variations', ideas about what we value - wealth, health, liberty and happiness - are revealed through the experiences and insights of the economists Ha-Joon Chang and Felix Martin, the life-model Sue Tilley and the poet Jazzman John Clarke, and also with reference to Ian Gardiner's 'Monument', Ritalin and Mary Poppins. Produced by Alan Hall and Hana Walker-Brown. A Falling Tree production for BBC Radio 3.
