Liberals have been introspecting (some may say self-flagellating) since the 2024 election, to varying degrees of convincingness and success. There's the usual genre of complaints—NIMBYism, identity politics, the crisis of masculinity, forgetting about the factory man—but the one thing liberals agree on is that they can't be blamed for following their good, apolitical science. Today's guests want you to rethink that. We're thrilled to have on Frances Lee, Professor of Politics and Public Affairs, and Stephen Macedo, Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Politics and the University Center for Human Values, both at Princeton University, to discuss their new book, In Covid's Wake: How Our Politics Failed Us.We open up the book by asking our guests why they wrote this book—why attack liberals' response to the COVID pandemic, and why now? Lee and Macedo argue that liberal science and policymaking early in the pandemic faced multiple epistemic failures, from undisclosed conflicts of interest to the silencing of opinions outside the mainstream. David defends the United States's COVID policy response, but Lee and Macedo press their point that value-laden judgments were made by state and local officials who avoided responsibility by claiming to follow the science. We wrap up the episode with a discussion of scientific expertise in modern democracies. This podcast is generously supported by Themis Bar Review.Referenced ReadingsGreat Barrington Declaration“Is the Coronavirus as Deadly as They Say?” by Eran Bendavid and Jay Bhattacharya“What Sparked the COVID Pandemic? As bird flu, also known as H5N1, continues to spread across the country, experts are concerned about the potential for undetected transfer and mutations. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, suggests that Americans may even be walking around with bird flu and not know it. Are we ready for a bird flu pandemic? 1/2/25 - Dr. Jack Stockwell, www.forbiddendoctor.com & www.jackstockwell.com | Phone: 866-867-5070, shares more information on California declaring a state of emergency over the H5N1 (bird flu), just as the CDC has declared the first severe case in Louisiana, and how it's very reminiscent of 4 years ago and the result many people faced from having the COVID-19 vaccine. Dr. Jack explains the “Gain of Function” approach and how studying a virus can take something relatively harmless and make it deadly. Plus, why those with obesity tend to have harsher reactions to diseases and disorders. Lastly, Doug joins Dr. Jack for a conversation on the structure of our arteries, questioning what feeds our brain, and how arteries differ from veins. The H5N1 bird flu cases among animals is continuing to rise, as US officials warn about the role of humans in spreading the virus. As far as public health authorities know so far, the outbreak in dairy cattle has spilled over to three farmworkers in the United States, all of whom have had mostly mild symptoms. There are now 102 herds in the US with H5N1 cases, though given the prevalence of inactivated virus in commercially available pasteurised milk, experts believe the true number may be even higher. In New York, the bird flu virus is not yet spreading among people, but the city is already preparing as if it could. The virus has worried epidemiologists for its pandemic potential even before the first human patients were detected in Hong Kong back in 1997. In the years since then, it has spread through migratory birds and periodically torn through chicken farms. Fewer than 1,000 people are known to have been infected in the past 20 years, but slightly more than half of those infected have died. On this episode of Morning Shot, Raina MacIntyre, Professor of Global Biosecurity, University of New South Wales, Sydney shares her insights on what a bird-flu pandemic in people might look like. When the Great War came to an end in late 1918, a cloud hung over the jubilation; the world was suffering the worst pandemic in history. From 1918 to 1919, the Spanish Flu killed more people than the fighting did in World War I and infected more than a quarter of all Americans. Educator Wilma Buntin describes the flu striking her family in the Houston area: "And I remember my older brother Louis was the only one who didn't get sick. So he'd try to fix something for us for breakfast, or he'd tried to fix something for supper. None of us were interested whatsoever. They didn't have a doctor there, so you just had to do what you thought you could. And they knew to drink fruit juices and rest. Then he'd cry when he'd fix something. He said, ‘It's because I can't do a good job of cooking you all are not eating.' And he didn't—(laughter)." In a 1987 interview, Louie Mayberry recalls how the virus changed everyday life for children: "When we moved to San Antonio I started to school. I hadn't gone to school but a few days, they had a—a flu epidemic in San Antonio and they turned the schools out. And we stayed out for quite a while. And they was trying to teach me how to work. They let me shine shoes at the I&GN [International-Great Northern Railroad] station in those days; it's Missouri Pacific [Railroad] now. And then school started again, and it went on for a couple of weeks, and they turned out again. We didn't get much schooling before Christmas." Bible translator Robert Bratcher, who was born in Brazil in 1920, tells how the illness affected travel: "My parents and my older brother, who was at that time four years old, had gone to Brazil in 1919. They had been appointed by the Foreign Mission Board and were due to go in 1918, but the great flu epidemic was at that time, and it held them up. They stayed in Valhalla, New York, with some other missionaries waiting till the ships, you know, were available that had sailors that could man them to take them to Brazil." Folklorist Martha Emmons remembers escaping the flu: "I have often thought that the Lord in His providence kept me from having the flu. I used to give a more earthy explanation than that. People asked me how I avoided it because, oh, people just dropped dead all around from that. But I was so needed, I thought. See, I had my father with me, and I was teaching at Maypearl, Texas, and I remember when I was asked that I said, ‘Oh, well, all I can attribute it to is eating onions and staying happy.' (laughter) And I did eat onions and anything else that way that I thought was the right kind of thing. And I did make an effort to stay happy. But I've often just thought it must have been a providential stroke because I don't know what could have happened if I had had to have the flu right there with my father an invalid and with me, and we were in that little apartment there. And it would have been awful for him to have taken the flu from me, don't you see?" The nationalism and acceptance of government authority heightened by the war allowed public health workers to easily put in place restrictive measures to bring the epidemic under control. The Spanish flu outbreak then faded from public memory, until flu scares in recent decades. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The winter of 1918 was brutal, not for the weather, but because the world was in the grips of an influenza pandemic that took at least 50 million lives worldwide.
While the Corona virus has largely receded from the daily consciousness of most folks, it's not gone away completely. Just the other day, someone told reported that some hospitals are beginning to enact new masking policies. Regional and national hotspots remain across the globe. Countless people are grieving the almost 6.8 million people the virus has killed so far. The question remains, What have we learned? Most people, it seems, are operating under an unspoken belief that what we have learned or haven't learned won't matter. That the odds of something like this happening again in our lifetimes is slim. If you'll forgive a horribly bad pun, they may be counting their chickens for before they hatch. The looming culprit is bird flu, a devastating virus responsible directly and indirectly for the death of millions of birds, most notably chickens, who are being slaughter in countless numbers as a prophylactic against further spread of the disease. Why are eggs so expensive these days? Fewer chickens. Fewer eggs. Supply and demand. But the real threat to humans is so far merely potential, albeit increasingly likely. On the show to talk about bird flu and its potential harms to people are Wayne Pacelle, president, and Drs. Jim Keen and Tom Pool. Dr. Keen is the Director of Veterinary Sciences for the Center for a Humane Economy, our sister organization. Dr. Pool is the Senior Veterinarian, Animal Wellness Action. And what's made this timely for us is our recent reporting on cockfighting in OK, Miss., Alabama and Tennessee. Wayne Pacelle from Animal Wellness Action joins host Joseph Grove to discuss the topic. Also on the show are Dr. Jim Keen, D.V.M., Ph.D., Director of Veterinary Sciences, Center for a Humane Economy, and Dr. Tom Pool, D.V.M, MPH, Dipl. ACVPM, Senior Veterinarian, Animal Wellness Action. The Spanish flu of 1918 wasn't from Spain and it didn't start or end with 1918. It lasted for years, killed millions around the world, and it infected President Woodrow Wilson himself, right as he was negotiating the treaty that would end World War I. The costs of that infection may have been the values and world order he'd taken the United States into the war to achieve.Join me as I talk with John Barry, Distinguished Scholar at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and author of The Great Influenza: the story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History, about Woodrow Wilson and the Great Influenza of 1918.Support the show

Heather and Joanne are off this week, so we're showcasing an episode from another Vox Media Podcast Network show: “How the 1918 Flu Pandemic Ended,” from The Weeds. Hosts Dara Lind and Dylan Matthews often explore the roots of our current political issues, from healthcare, to immigration, to housing. In this installment, originally aired in January, host and Senior Vox Correspondent Dylan Matthews talks with historian John Barry, who wrote an authoritative account of the 1918 flu pandemic, “The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic.” Heather and Joanne will be back next Tuesday for the first installment in a new three-episode series about free speech, censorship, and so-called “cancel culture.” In the meantime, enjoy this episode of the Weeds podcast. And if you like it, you can find more episodes of the Weeds at vox.com/the-weeds, or by searching for “The Weeds” in your favorite podcast app. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, Dean Lloyd Minor is joined by eminent historian John Barry, a well-researched expert on two of our nation's greatest crises: the Flu Pandemic of 1918 and the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. They serve as direct parallels to our present-day challenges of COVID and climate change. How did leaders approach these disasters back then? And what historical lessons can we employ to effectively lead on these issues?
For two years now, we've been living through the Covid-19 pandemic. A century ago the world was consumed by another deadly virus, commonly known as The Spanish Influenza. Spreading worldwide mainly in 1918 and 1919, it is estimated that one third of the world's population became infected with the virus. Approximately 50 million people died, and in the U.S. the death toll was around 675,000. David Reamer is an Alaska historian who has been researching this particular period of the state's history. Since the onset of Covid-19, he has written articles for the Anchorage Daily News about the Spanish Influenza and other public health crises throughout the years. ATMI senior producer Quinn White spoke with Reamer about his research. He talked about how the virus affected urban and rural areas differently, how Alaskans responded to subsequent public health outbreaks, and the stark parallels to what we're all living through today. They spoke on January 26th, 2022. Hosted by Ada Bjorkman. Music by Kendrick Whiteman and Devin Shreckengost. Susan Kingsley Kent is the author of The Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919: a brief history with documents. The 1918 Flu Pandemic is the only historical event we have that's remotely comparable to what's going on today during the COVID-19 crisis. Dr. Kent, a prolific author and professor at the University of Colorado gave us a truly global perspective on that moment in history and what elements of that story echo in today's.

What if Covid predominately killed young Americans? Mr. Barry explains how such a scenario would have altered our response. John M. Barry, our guest in this episode, is the author of The Great Influenza, an award-winning book about the Spanish flu pandemic, one that famously became the impetus for President George W. Bush's pandemic preparation plan. Interestingly, President Bush has read another award-winning book by Mr. Barry, one about the history of the Mississippi River's 1927 flood, which President Bush mentions in his autobiography. Although a nonscientist, Mr. Barry has been involved in highly prestigious positions with many scientific institutions. You'll understand how he is qualified for such positions once you read his books (we highly encourage reading The Great Influenza). You can also appreciate the depth of his scientific knowledge and historical research by listening to our conversation with him about the Spanish flu pandemic, and the lessons that can be gleaned from it for our struggle with the Covid-19 pandemic. As you will note, Mr. Barry is not sheepish in sharing his opinions, about how some of our politicians and experts have may have botched our response to our great pandemic. Mr. Barry's personal and professional bios are quite fascinating, and he uses wit and humor to tell both. You are welcome to visit his website to learn more about him, including links to his many publications and interviews: https://www.johnmbarry.com/ To continue our free podcast program, we depend on our listeners' support. What are the chances that the avian world will suffer a pandemic? Topical, I know!?!! Well, the best way to find out more about that is to ask a scientist who specialises in avian diseases, and that person is Michelle Wille, who knows just about everything there is to know about Avian influenza. In this episode I try to keep up with her! Michelle has worked on Mallards in the Northern Hemispere, but is now at the University of Sydney, and putting some energy into Australia's waders when she is not in the lab. MIchelle explains what avian influenza is, how is occurs in wild populations, and deals with my anxiety about pandemics! Visit Michelle's website to learn a lot more about Michelle and Avian viruses - michellewille.com Michelle has one of the best Twitter handles - follow @duckswabber Currently trying to get some eyes and subscribers on The Bird Emergency on YouTube, so I can put a bit more effort into the video side of things, so if you would like more visual content, please subscribe, and I will watch with interest if that's what you want! Learn from those who lived during the Spanish Flu of 1918. In this episode, I discuss what I learned about the pandemic through letters, and I also read letters written at that time. The letters come from the National Archives in DC, the WWI Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, MO, and the British Medical Journal. If you're interested in learning more about the 1918 pandemic, I recommend Jeremy Brown's book, “Influenza: The Hundred Year Hunt to Cure the Deadliest Disease in History.” He tells more stories from the pandemic and how the flu shaped society.
After our usual start to the show with the latest news, some commentary and, of course, something funny to bring a much-needed laugh or two, Nicole welcomes John M. Barry to the show. He wrote the book, "The Great Influenza" and will give us all the info we need and more about the deadliest pandemic in history
Not your typical FOAMed topic. The Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918. "Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it."
