Your company has a long history of putting together strategic plans. And you have diligently read them all in a search to understand the intentions of prior leaders. But as you look them over you are concerned. There are lots of todo lists, action items, and budgets, but the underlying plan seems to lack something important - a strategy. You can't quite explain why this is the case, but you can tell when that intangible quality is missing. Perhaps, there should be a better way to tell than just raw instinct, but how? Tune into this episode to hear from me and my special guest, Alexis Savkin, as we solve this wicked problem together. Welcome to the latest episode of Chronicles from a Caribbean Cubicle Podcast. In this episode, our host Francis Wade shares insight on transforming the hypersensitivity found in employees into an urge for purposeful contributions. The discussion digs deeper into the significance of understanding the root cause of hypersensitivity in workplaces rather than addressing the surface-level symptoms. This enlightening piece reveals three strategic perspectives that can shape more profound senses of purpose and inspiration among office staff. The concept of Hurricane Heroics is introduced and explores how exceptional potential can be unlocked even without a catastrophic event. It highlights the idea that the anticipation of a significant future can alter human behavior and influence extraordinary output from employees. The discussion proceeds to explore the concept of an Urgent Inspiring Future as a tool for harnessing the power of purpose. By anticipating a return to normalcy, people are empowered to bounce back quickly after a hurricane. Similarly, crafting a joint future that deviates from the usual could offer employees a compelling 'why' and consequently foster higher productivity levels. Wade further discusses the value of 'Your Company's Peculiar Destination', advising managers not to shy away from asking for more output from employees. Through this, he encourages managers to challenge their staff with a potential meaning for them to fulfill, thus unleashing their gut desire for a sense of accomplishment and more value in their roles. This episode ends with a crucial advocacy for purpose over comfort. Vouching for this strategy, Wade confirms that by creating a shared future vision that transcends the mundane, managers can tap into their employees' inherent desire for meaning. This strategy ultimately leads to a more passionate and determined team that willingly surpasses its perceived limitations. Wade concludes the episode with an invitation to Caribbean companies facing unsolved problems related to strategy, productivity, engagement, or business process improvement to explore a fresh line of thinking through his previous articles. In 2017, Myanmar's military launched a campaign of widespread targeted violence against its Rohingya minority. The horrific atrocities was later described by United Nations experts as genocide. This had been building since 2012, when earlier ethnic violence erupted between Buddhists and Muslims in Western Myanmar. These very grave incidents leading to the deaths and also the flight of thousands of Rohingya to neighbouring Bangladesh was the most concentrated exodus of people since the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. In Myanmar's Enemy Within: Buddhist Violence and the Making of the Muslim 'Other' (Zed Books, 2017, 2019), Francis Wade identifies the underlying causes which flamed division, segregation and resulted in a horrific loss of life and violence. Wade explores how the manipulations by a ruling elite turned prompted neighbours to take up arms against neighbour, by politicising ethnic identity. The crisis is contextualised in the legacy of British colonialism which calcified the previously fluid dynamics of cultural groups across the country. The military junta is shown to have exploited these divisions in its campaign which targeted the Rohingya minority. In the period of extreme violence, Wade draws out how the U.N., and more broadly, how Western backers of the apparent political transition to democratisation contemporaneously ignored the unfolding situation. Through his on-the-ground accounts, Wade explores how citizens experiencing rights and freedoms unseen for half a century, under a much lauded civilian leaders such as Aung San Suu Kyi, became complicit in this humanitarian catastrophe. In 2015, following Myanmar's first free election in a quarter-century, Western governments, including that of the United States, staked their hopes for democracy on Myanmar’s de facto civilian leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. Once regarded as a nascent democracy, Myanmar has sharply backslid in recent years. Suu Kyi’s denial of what the United Nations deems a genocide of the country’s Rohingya population coupled with her fall from power in February’s military coup, shows the limits, and perhaps naivety, of Western-backed democracy promotion. This week, guest host and Eurasia Group Foundation research fellow Caroline Baxter speaks with journalist Francis Wade. They discuss America's attempts to curb the humanitarian and political crises in Myanmar, and the options (or lack thereof) confronting the Biden administration. Francis Wade is a freelance journalist with extensive experience reporting on South and South-East Asia. He is also the author of Myanmar’s Enemy Within: Buddhist Violence and the Making of a Muslim ‘Other’. You can follow Francis on Twitter at @Francis_Wade.
Large scale protests have been taking place in Myanmar since a military coup on February 1st deposed the democratically-elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. This week, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar reported that the military were being deployed to the city of Yangon, raising fears of bloodshed. Protesters are calling for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners, but activist groups have raised concerns that even that may not be enough to restore democracy in Myanmar. On this episode of World Review from the New Statesman, Emily Tamkin in Washington DC and Ido Vock in Berlin are joined by Wai Hnin Pwint Thon, an activist for Burma Campaign UK whose father was one of those arrested in the days following the military coup. They discuss why the military have taken power, what this means for Myanmar, and whether there is a road to true democracy for the country.Further reading:Francis Wade has also been following the situation in Myanmar, and has written this piece exploring how democracy might be defined after the military coup.Emily has been reporting on the Texas storms that have caused power outages leaving millions in freezing conditions without heating or hot water. She writes that the storms offer a warning to ill-prepared governments.Ido discusses how new variants of Covid 19 could continue to limit international travel for years beyond the immediate crisis. We'd love to hear from you! Nathan Simmonds: Welcome to Sticky Interviews. My name is Nathan Simmonds, senior leadership coach and trainer for MBM, Making Business Matter, the home of Sticky Learning. The idea of these interviews is to be sharing great minds, great ideas and great people with you to help you be the best version of you. Today, I've got the pleasure of having a second, third conversation with Francis Wade, time management expert, guru, aficionado, helping to uncover some of those myths and fallacies that we come up with against our own time management. Nathan Simmonds: Short bio from him. He's a columnist. He's the founder and creator of the CaribHRForum, which is a volunteer-based professional network. He's a consultant. He solves tough productivity problems for corporations. He's an author. He's a speaker, and he is helping those people that think they're time starved. He's helping the busiest 1% get even more efficient in their day through his skills. Francis, thank you so much for being here. Thank you for doing this interview. Really appreciate it. Francis Wade: Thanks, Nathan. It's great to be with you and your audience. Nathan Simmonds: I'm looking forward to this because we had a really large conversation previously, and that just went backwards and forwards, and we got all these different ideas and concepts. It was a really fluid, flowing dialogue, and I'm looking forward to getting some of these ideas shared with more people in this moment. Francis Wade: Great. Time Management Mastery Nathan Simmonds: I'm going to dive straight into this because people... I'm not sure how much of the audience we have know you, so I want them to find out more about you, and then we'll dive into what you're good at, your areas of expertise and your zone of genius. First and foremost, why do you do what you do? Francis Wade: Whoa, that's a big question. I guess I've always been interested in being productive as an individual. Long story short, I lived in the United States up until 2005, when I returned to live here in Jamaica. So I'm based here in Kingston, in the hills over Kingston here in Jamaica. It was really the transition that I made back from the US to living in Jamaica that got me to this heightened level of interest. It had been a passing pastime, I guess. I had led courses. I had done training. And I imagined that moving back, changing countries from a developed country to a developing country, wouldn't be all that hard. And I was wrong. Francis Wade: I discovered that my productivity plummeted, and I didn't know why. So I went looking for answers.

Take Back Time: Time Management | Stress Management | Tug of War With Time
Let’s face it: it’s getting harder and harder to escape overwhelm now than it was twenty years ago. We have more triggers in our immediate environment than there used to be. We absorb more information in a day than our grandparents saw in a month, and nobody is trained to deal with the sheer volume of information on the internet. Data is like oxygen. And according to Francis Wade, author of Perfect Time-Based Productivity, psychologists haven’t caught up with the changes that we’re undergoing on a daily basis. They’re moving far too slow to keep up. How, then, can you escape overwhelm? If you don’t have a structure to routinely keep you from being overwhelmed, then you’ll be falling right into the Zeigranik Effect over and over again, clueless about where it’s coming from. The level of frustration that people experience is just not right. It’s one thing to find yourself in pain and in overwhelm. It’s another thing to have the wrong idea about where it’s coming from and then solving the wrong problem only to see time demands come right back. Francis delves into managing time demands to escape overwhelm – for good. Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Freelance journalist Francis Wade has worked extensively in South East Asia and contributed to The Guardian, Al Jazeera English, Asia Times Online, the Democratic Voice of Burma and The Los Angeles Review of Books. In his riveting book Myanmar’s Enemy Within: Buddhist Violence and the Making of a Muslim ‘Other’, he reveals the deep fissures that have spurred mass violence and refugee flight. The book has garnered praise from the BBC’s Fergal Keane, who lauded Wade for his “moral courage and intellectual insight”, and author Pankaj Mishra who praised its “historical depth and intellectual acuity”. Wade speaks with Hannah Brown. Supported by Platinum Patrons Dame Rosie & Michael Horton.
The life of the foreign correspondent is a fascinating one – forever on the move, often at the coalface of the news cycle, and witnessing the unfolding of history. Freelancer and South East Asian specialist Francis Wade and former China correspondent Madeleine O’Dea, talk with journalist Mike McRoberts.
Since August 2017, in the country’s latest wave of Buddhist-on-Muslim violence, over 647,000 Rohingya refugees have fled Myanmar due to systemic violence and ethnic cleansing that has killed more than 10,000 people. Why is a religion seen as so peaceful in the West lashing out with such vehemence, and why are the Rohingya their target? And how did a seemingly local conflict erupt across the entire country? Journalist Francis Wade, who has reported in Myanmar for a decade, gives us the deep history, which stretches farther back than contemporary reports might suggest, and reveals a tangled web of interests: ultranationalist Buddhist monks, a military fearful of losing its grip on power, implicit racial hierarchies, and a democratic political party, led by Aung Sang Suu Kyi, whose very principles are called into question.Go beyond the episode:Francis Wade’s Myanmar’s Enemy Within: The Making of a Muslim “Other”Read the UNHCR’s report on the Rohingya emergencyDuring the reporting of “Massacre in Myanmar,” on the systemic destruction of Rohingya villages, two Reuters reporters were arrested by Myanmar security forces and are still in custodyHanna Beech asks in The New Yorker, “What Happened to Myanmar’s Human-Rights Icon?” For daily coverage of Myanmar politics, read The Irrawaddy Explore the Tea Circle, an Oxford forum for new perspective on Burma/MyanmarTune in every week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. Francis Wade is the author of Myanmar's Enemy Within, the book that debuted just 10 days before violence erupted in the Rakhine state against the Rohingya population. We discuss the political factors that led up to the outbreak as well as the history of the country which makes it much more vulnerable to this kind of ethnic violence.
Francis Wade, author of "The Enemy Within," a new book on the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, explains the historical background to the persecution of the Muslim Rohingya minority and gives a first-hand account of the terrible situation now. Has democracy been good for Burma? Will some Rohingya refugees become Islamic extremists?
