“You, the writer, have a bigger sphere of knowledge. You know more things than the narrator necessarily knows.” - Gabriela PereiraIn today's episode, I ask Gabriela Pereira of DIY MFA for her thoughts on some of the most commonly asked questions I get about point of view and voice—and she shares some of her favorite tips and strategies for mastering POV and voice in your writing. Here's a preview of what's included:[1:51] What's Gabriela's advice for writers trying to choose the "right" point of view for their book?[05:01] 3 Tips from Gabriela for mastering POV and voice in your writing.[15:27] Using an omniscient third-person narrator may feel easier than a limited third-person but this isn't necessarily true. We discuss how to utilize third-party omniscient without feeling dated. [21:10] We talk about voice and Gabriela shares why she hates when people say "Find your voice".[38:20] The takeaway from this conversation is the importance of approaching the editing process systematically. For instance, beginning with the big picture before focusing on minor sentence-level adjustments, ultimately leads to a better editing process. It is valuable to also maintain consistency in voice and POV, making sure that the writer's voice shines through for clarity and coherence of the story.Links mentioned in this episode:Gabriela Pereira's WebsiteBook: DIY MFAEpisode #90 How to Choose the Best Point of View for Your StoryRead this episode's blog post here!Click here to get 15% off a 30+ page manuscript report from The Spun Yarn's beta readers! You might want an MFA, but is attending an MFA program right for you? They aren't for everyone, and for some, programs aren't even accessible with barriers like location, cost, and regular life responsibilities getting in the way. But Gabriela Pereira has the solution. She's the founder of DIY MFA—born from her love of attending an MFA program herself and recognizing these barriers—the MFA for those who aren't served by the traditional MFA system.

We also talk about her program, DIY MFA, and how one of the drivers behind that program was her belief that with traditional MFA programs, one size fits some. "Life is what happens while you're making other plans." How many times has the universe interrupted or curtailed those dreams we set up for ourselves? In Gabriela Perreira's case, a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder and the medications involved in treating it, led her to a life-altering choice. She'll talk about the journey from early diagnosis to acceptance to sharing her diagnosis to help other people, and assure them, they are not alone..We are not our disorders or disease. In the best case scenarios, we are able to come to terms with what life throws us and find grace and discover other ways to live life as richly as we imagined. Gabriela Pereira is the founder of DIYMFA.com, the do-it-yourself alternative to a Masters degree in writing. She is also a speaker, podcast host for DIY MFA Radio, and author of the book DIY MFA: Write with Focus, Read with Purpose, Build Your Community.

There are two types of overworked and overwhelmed business owners: Those who are desperate to take a 4-week vacation without their business falling apart… Those who love their work so “vacation” doesn’t really appeal, but they want/need to be ready for other life events (health, maternity leave, moving, aging parents, etc) that happen so they can step away without their business falling apart. Our guest this week, Gabriela Pereira, used to be the second. She loves her work as the Founder + Instigator of her company, DIY MFA (which helps writers get the knowledge without the college), and can’t imagine a vacay. However, she joined the Run Like Clockwork Accelerator to implement systems to prepare her business + team for personal health reasons. On this episode of the Run Like Clockwork Podcast, Gabriela talks to RLC Lead Coach, Emily, about how the Clockwork systems helped her hire during a health crisis and double her profits from last year! Learn how to write with focus, read with purpose, and build your community in this special FBP Rewind episode with Gabriela Pereira from DIY MFA. Welcome to episode 266 of The Food Blogger Pro Podcast! This week on the podcast, we’re rewinding back to one of our most popular episodes about writing with Gabriela Pereira from DIY MFA. Write More, Write Better, and Write Smarter Writing –– do you love it or hate it? It seems to be one of those topics that really divide people; either you love the creative process of putting words onto paper or…you don’t. Today’s FBP Rewind episode will help you get those creative juices flowing and fine-tune your writing processes. A bit about our interviewee: Gabriela got her MFA in 2010, and after she graduated, she realized that a lot of people don’t actually need a formal education process in order to write. If you give yourself permission to own your creativity and writing, and if you learn a few key skills along the way, you can be a writer. She started her business, DIY MFA, to teach others how they can do exactly that. Gabriela has been able to practice, evaluate, and fine-tune her craft and teach others how to do the same. Gabriela’s strategies about finding the right writing system, tracking productivity, staying inspired, and understanding strengths and weaknesses all play into finding one’s voice and writing style. In this episode, you’ll learn: What an MFA is Why she considers herself an instigator How she calculates and tracks her productivity How to find a writing system that works for you How she stays inspired How she writes personal posts Why it’s important to get input from the right people Why you should know your strengths and weaknesses Resources: 099: Sponsored Content and Getting Paid What Your Work is Worth with Danielle Liss DIY MFA DIY MFA book The Writer Igniter Setting the Mood for an Optimal Writing Session Gabriela’s personal post 20 things Bjork learned from writing income reports James Altucher DIY MFA Radio podcast Starter Kit If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions for interviews, be sure to email them to podcast@foodbloggerpro.com.

Gabriela Pereira doesn't think you NEED to get an MFA. However, need and want are two different things. An MFA grad herself, Gabriela realized that many writers struggled with the dilemma of whether to MFA or not to MFA and took her own grad school experience and created a template so others could get all the benefit of the degree with none of the loans, debt and stress that can come along with going back to school. Gabriela is a wealth of information and was incredible generous in sharing that with us on this episode. If you've ever wanted to take your writing seriously and pursue it with great focus, but believed you don't need to go back to school to become a "real" writer, this episode is going to feel like one giant permission slip. Happy listening and happy writing, for those of you who finish listening and realize you can start writing right now, degree or no degree. Have you been struggling to find time for writing in your busy life? Are you sitting on a good idea, but can’t focus to get it done? Today on Financial Fluency, I’m pleased to have Gabriela Pereira with me. Gabriela is the author of DIY MFA: Write with Focus, Read with Purpose, Build Your Community and founder of DIY MFA, the do-it-yourself alternative to a Master's degree in writing. She created DIY MFA to help writers around the world get the "knowledge without the college." Gabriela’s mission is to empower creative individuals to take an entrepreneurial approach to writing. On the show, Gabriela mentions she’s had many prior lives, and jokingly considers herself to be part feline because of that. She worked as a psychology researcher for a while then went on to design toys before founding DIY MFA. Gabriela admits it was an accident; she didn’t found DIY MFA, it “found” her. On this episode, you’ll hear how that accident came to fruition and where she is today. Gabriela starts off by sharing where the idea for DIY MFA began. Gabriela admits she went to school to get her MFA for all the wrong reasons. She didn’t know how to get published, but she knew she was good at writing. It wasn’t until she was sitting in her commencement ceremony expecting to feel like a writer, and she didn’t feel it, that the DIY idea came to her. She talked to a lot of people, and she realized a fair amount of them could not go on to obtain their MFA as she did. Gabriela thought about how she could share what she learned in the MFA structure and how to help people construct their DIY MFA themselves. Gabriela did what everyone did with a blog in 2010—she wrote about it, and her question was simple: "If there was a DIY MFA would you do it?” Fast-forward to 2012, Gabriela is nine months pregnant and attending the Writer’s Digest Conference in New York City. At the conference, she finds herself talking to a guy who asked to hear her “pitch slam.” (It’s kind of like speed dating for writers - you pitch your book idea to an agent.) To Gabriela’s surprise, this man ended up being a Writer’s Digest agent. After hearing her pitch, he gave her his card and said to send him the book proposal. Gabriela notes before jumping the gun she contacted an old colleague, Jeff Kleinman. After talking to him, she ended up signing him as her agent. The first thing he told her was that her site and social numbers needed to improve, so Gabriela spent two and a half years building her platform. She grew her business, spoke at conferences, made connections, and got her name out there. At the end of December of 2014, she signed the book writing contract, and DIY MFA took off. Gabriela believes people should write their book; it’s an accomplishment that gives the author three extra tools for their writing toolbox. Publishing a book is a credibility builder for your career. Writing your book gives you visibility as an author. The journey of writing the book makes you clarify your ideas. Gabriela’s Writing Techniques Writing advice from Gabriela to help you power through writing a book. Pick one. Zero in and make a choice on what you want to do, what you want to write about, and figure out where your heart is. Stick with it until the end. Remember, if you say “no” to something, you’re saying yes to the thing you want. Revise. Take your revisions as far as you can. Start editing the important part of your book: voice, characters, plot. After you’ve reviewed those elements to make sense of your story, you can move to the scene-by-scene. Look at the dialogue and description. You don’t want to go through a manuscript line-by-line with a red pen if you’re going to end up deleting portions of the book. Keep writing. Avoid the “Shiny Object” syndrome, and focus on writing the one thing your heart tells you to do. Keep pushing through. Writing in the middle of the book is the most daunting task for a lot of writers. Keep thinking about the story and how to keep your readers along for the journey. The great benefit of Gabriela’s advice is you can use this approach for any written project in your business. To keep up with Gabriela and DIY MFA, visit the website here. How to write with focus, read with purpose, and build your community with Gabriela Pereira. ----- Welcome to episode 102 of the Food Blogger Pro podcast! This week on the podcast, Bjork talks to Gabriela Pereira about becoming a better writer and building a community around your writing. Gabriela Pereira: Instigator and Creative Director Gabriela Pereira earned her MFA from The New School, in New York. While undercover as a graduate student, she learned the inside scoop on MFA programs, invented a slew of writing tools all her own, and developed a new, more effective way for writers to learn their craft. Now she wants to share this discovery and help writers around the world get the "knowledge without the college." In a past life, Gabriela worked in the toy industry, creating educational activities and games for toddlers, pre-schoolers, and tweens. After that, she taught several writing courses in New York City at organizations like: 826NYC, Everybody Wins, EHTP, and a local writing workshop she built from the ground up. While Gabriela now teaches exclusively at DIY MFA, she continues to speak and lead workshops at national and international writing conferences, both online and off. Her favorite thing to do is come up with new dastardly plans and innovative resources for DIY MFA. When she's not working on DIY MFA, Gabriela loves to write middle grade and teen fiction, with short stories for "grown-ups" thrown in for good measure. Gabriela is represented by Jeff Kleinman at Folio Literary Management and her book about DIY MFA is scheduled for release in Spring 2016 from Writer's Digest Books.
As a kid, I was obsessed with Monty Python's The Holy Grail. So much so that the obsession grew from clanking together coconuts as a teenager with my buddy Alan to studying Arthurian legend in my college studies. Even my professor thought I was a bit ridiculous. “You're that kid in high school who would clank coconuts together, right?” she once asked. And she was right. On a random cycling trip to Barcelona, I discovered that one of our routes outside Barcelona took us through the mountains where the grail is now thought to be buried. Did I look for The Holy Grail then? You betcha. And I seriously thought I found it when I came upon a tiny little 10th century chapel in the Pyrenees. But Alas, there was no grail to be found. I am one of many intrigued by the grail, however. The Holy Grail has been an obsession for questers throughout all of history. The Knights Templar searched high and low for The Holy Grail during The Crusades and Cistercian Monks rifled through ancient texts to search for clues, as well. Heck, one man — the 12th Century French poet Chretien De Troyes — ended his story of The Holy Grail mid-sentence (yes, really) while writing the Arthurian legend of Perceval, the legendary knight who saw The Holy Grail while dining with The Fisher King. Legend has it, Chretien De Troyes died while writing because he was about to share a secret too powerful to share with the world. Seriously, I can't make this stuff up. What is “The Holy Grail”? Most literalists say a cup — the cup used by Jesus Christ at The Last Supper — while others say a well like the fountain of youth. Unfortunately, no cup (or well or fountain) has ever been found. The evil Heinrich Himmler, Hitler's right-hand henchman, thought he came close to finding it after funneling an absurd amount of Nazi money to search the grail during World War II. Yes, this is a true fact. No, no grail was ever found. Even Indiana Jones, whose story came out of these real-world events, never resurrected the miraculous cup. So, I pose the question: What if they are all wrong? What if The Holy Grail is not some chalice or well or any destination, but rather metaphor for our own internal quest for meaning? The quest that begins with the sublime question we begin asking at some point in our lives….Why am I here? ….and then spawns a miraculous journey on purpose. To begin, splash a bit of honesty on your face and mix it with the dots in your life. But don't take it from me. Take a look at the journey of just a few of the incredible people I've had the honor to meet over the past couple of years: On the other side of the pond in the UK, Bhavani Esapathi created The Invisible Health Data Project. The project amplifies the many voices that make up the invisible chronic illnesses thousands suffer with each and every day. There are so many illnesses that go unnoticed in the world today and Bhavani helps make sure these people get their voice out to receive the attention they deserve. NYC native Gabriela Pereira is the instigator and purveyor of purpose behind the DIY MFA. When the rest of the world obsesses over science and tech, Gabriela shows creative writers how they can turn their art into a profitable and philanthropic tool to elevate all of humanity. Physical therapist turned entrepreneur, when Ashley Jacob learned of her mother's diagnosis, she took her pain and anguish and turned it into her quest to find answers. Her questions morphed into the beautiful long-form podcast, Tsuris, which features interviews from the many vantage points that make up a serious health prognosis. And lastly, after high school, a starry eyed teen named Tyson Adams went out to vagabond around the world. Little did he know that his travel would lead to a cathartic and philanthropic journey. His work now creates schools and wells in Laos for children in need through selling coffee and coconut oil to adults in need. _______________________________ The Holy Grail, I believe, is not a cup or chalice at all. Rather, it is one's personal soul-shaping quest that goes beyond the self and transcends to benefit others. It's truly a beautiful journey, a hero's journey, that I invite you to join me on. What about you? What is your “Holy Grail”?
Gabriela Pereira: Instigator and Creative Director Gabriela Pereira earned her MFA from The New School, in New York. While undercover as a graduate student, she learned the inside scoop on MFA programs, invented a slew of writing tools all her own, and developed a new, more effective way for writers to learn their craft. Now she wants to share this discovery and help writers around the world get the “knowledge without the college.” In a past life, Gabriela worked in the toy industry, creating educational activities and games for toddlers, pre-schoolers, and tweens. When she’s not working on DIY MFA, Gabriela loves to write middle grade and teen fiction, with short stories for “grown-ups” thrown in for good measure. Gabriela is represented by Jeff Kleinman at Folio Literary Management and her book about DIY MFA is scheduled for release in Spring 2016 from Writer’s Digest Books.

Learn more at DIYMFA.com. We spoke about writing, of course and below are the highlights of our conversation. What Gabriela Said Whenever I see a debut author launch their first book it makes me realize that magic is possible. I do believe that writing is a teachable skill. There are no accidents in writing. You should strive to reach the point when you can break the rules on purpose. There is no right or wrong way of writing because that would mean putting your brain on autopilot and following the rules. Every word should be in your writing for a reason. When you're just putting your words on a page you're creating the raw material. Putting words in a page may be a struggle. Once you've gotten yourself into a routine and into a habit of writing fairy regularly it's a lot easier to sustain that momentum. I believe that writers should write the thing that doesn't make them want to break the computer. If you hate it - don't write it. You wanna remember the individual humans behind the numbers. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Gabriela Pereira, founder and instigator of DIY MFA, which is the do-it-yourself alternative to a Master of Arts in Writing. Pereira has some incredible advice for how to put together a writing curriculum for yourself. Using the pillars of writing, reading, and community, she explains how she first came up with the idea for DIY MFA. We also talk about how to build a well-rounded craft, how to know what you don't know, and what exactly it means to “write with focus.”Thing of the Week: DIY MFA Starter KitHomework: Observe your own habits! Think about your writing time like a pie: 1 slice for writing, 1 slice for reading, and 1 slice for community. Draw a circle at the end of every day and map out how much time you spent doing each of these three things. Do this for several weeks, and watch the patterns that emerge!
