Over the last few months, dozens of Broadway luminaries have shared stories about their careers, their views on doing good, and their hopes and dreams for a better Broadway when it reopens this fall. During the shutdown, the theater industry came under much-needed scrutiny for many of its long-established practices onstage and off. While the excitement is palpable as Broadway shows roll out their return dates, the question remains what changes we will see in the industry moving forward. When we asked our guests “If you could wave a magic wand, what changes would you like to see when Broadway reopens,” they responded passionately with suggestions for audiences as well as the talented industry folks onstage, backstage, and behind the scenes. Join us on this special episode of Broadway Gives Back as we explore their thought-provoking answers. With nominations set and just over a month until showtime, details are trickling out about the 93rd Oscars and neither sweatshirts nor Zoom made the cut."Our plan is that this year's Oscars will look like a movie, not a television show," said show producers Jesse Collins, Stacy Sher and Steven Soderbergh in a statement Friday. They've enlisted Emmy and Tony Award winning director Glenn Weiss to direct the live broadcast on April 25.Although considerably scaled down from a normal year, the producers have said they are committed to holding an in-person event at Los Angeles' Union Station for nominees, presenters and limited guests. There will also be a live component at the Dolby Theatre, which has been home to the Academy Awards since 2001.But unlike the Golden Globes, which combined in-person and Zoom elements in its bi-coastal broadcast, the Oscars are not making a virtual element possible for nominees who either can't or don't feel comfortable attending. The producers said they plan to treat the event like an active movie set with on-site COVID safety teams and testing protocols. And, yes, they expect attendees to dress up."We're aiming for a fusion of Inspirational and Aspirational, which in actual words means formal is totally cool if you want to go there, but casual is really not," producers said. The 93rd Oscars will air in New Zealand on April 26th.

The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences(AMPAS), will honor the best films of 2019 and is scheduled to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. After more than a decade of holding the Academy Award ceremonies towards the end of February, the 92nd Academy Awards is due to take place earlier in the month, on February 9, 2020. During the ceremony, AMPAS will present Academy Awards (commonly referred to as Oscars) in 24 categories. The ceremony will be televised in the United States by ABC and produced by Lynette Howell Taylor and Stephanie Allain, and directed by Glenn Weiss. Citing the success of the format at the 91st presentation in 2019, ABC announced that the ceremony will again be conducted without a host.
A winter of discontent for the Academy Awards will culminate Sunday in an Oscar ceremony that may lack a host but isn't missing intrigue. The run-up to the 91st Academy Awards has been a series of missteps and backtracks by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. A new best "popular film" category was in, and then it was out. Kevin Hart was host and then he wasn't. Some categories were removed from the live broadcast, and then they were back. But if the script this Oscar season has been constantly rewritten, the film academy is hoping for a Hollywood ending (and much better ratings than the all-time low viewership last year.) ABC's telecast will begin at 8 p.m. EST following the usual red carpet festivities. The show is available for livestream via ABC in some cities to users with a participating TV provider. After some unlikely Los Angeles weather — to much local fanfare, it snowed in parts of the city on Thursday — sunny skies are expected for red carpet arrivals.Producers Donna Gigliotti and Glenn Weiss have pledged that the show will be speedier this year, even though its initial goal of a three-hour broadcast has faded. Kicking things off will be a performance by Queen, featuring Adam Lambert, to celebrate the best picture-nominee "Bohemian Rhapsody."In the academy's favor is a popular crop of nominees: "Bohemian Rhapsody," ''A Star Is Born" and, most of all, "Black Panther" have all amassed huge sums in ticket sales. Typically, when there are box-office hits (like "Titanic"), more people watch the Oscars. But just how many people have seen one of the top nominees and the film favored to win best picture — Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" — remains unknown. Netflix has declined to give box-office results or steaming viewership. It remains a nominee unlike any other. Should "Roma" — a black-and-white, Spanish and Mixtec language film about a domestic worker in a Mexican family — win, it will be both the first Netflix movie to win best picture and the first foreign language film to do so.Yet this year's race has been maddeningly unpredictable, with the usual predictive awards being spread across contenders such as Peter Farrelly's "Green Book," a divisive period dramedy about a black pianist (Mahershala Ali) and his white chauffer (Viggo Mortensen); the royal romp "The Favourite; and Ryan Coogler's Marvel sensation "Black Panther," which could become the first superhero film ever to win Hollywood's top award.Other milestones are possible, too. Though Cuaron is favored for best director, a win for Spike Lee ("BlacKkKlansman") would make him the first black filmmaker to ever win the award. Lee has said he likes his film's underdog position as a "dark horse — pun intended." Lee and his fellow screenwriters are also up for best screenplay, which would give the 61-year-old Lee his first competitive Oscar. Many also expect Glenn Close, in her seventh nomination, to finally win one. She's the front-runner for best actress for her performance in "The Wife," a film about the overlooked and under-honored spouse of an acclaimed novelist. Though Lady Gaga began the season as the favorite, Close has won a string of awards leading up to the Oscars, including at Saturday's Independent Spirit Awards where she brought her dog, Pip, along as a date. One virtual lock: Marvel will win its first Oscar. Though "Black Panther," up for six awards and could win in a number of categories, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" is considered the overwhelming favorite for best animated film.Last year's Oscars followed the rise of the #MeToo movement, the launch of the gender equality group Time's Up and the downfall of Harvey Weinstein. A year after best-actress winner Frances McDormand urged the adoption of an "inclusion rider" (a contractual stipulation for the diversity of a film's cast and crew), numerous production companies, stars and one studio (Warner Bros.) have made similar pledges. How much gender equality will be discussed at th...

MediaVillage's Insider InSites podcast on Media, Marketing and Advertising
EB Moss: This is E.B. Moss and I’m here with Al Berman for some Insider InSites, spontaneously ON site at the Nat Geo kickoff party for Earth Live. Al is the Executive Producer for this and is the mastermind behind setting up 50 cameras all around the world in [12] countries. Tell us about this! Al Berman: Yes, we have at least 50, and by the time we go on air will probably have more. We’re at 14 manned locations, over 50 locations total, and we’re doing something that’s never been tried before. We’re around the world, not in cities where you have technical infrastructure, where you have internet, no. We’re in the nether lands of the world where the wildlife is. So we went after the wildlife and then figured out how to get the signal from wherever we are back to New York, where we have our studios and our hosts – Jane Lynch and Phil Keoghan – and Chris Packham, our animal expert. So it’s been a technical challenge, a creative challenge, and just lining up the very best photographers in the world that’s been a challenge too. EB: What were the origins? How did it come about? Al: I originally approached Nat Geo and suggested we do two or three places live – safari, under the water with sharks, and Tim [Pastore, head of original programming for National Geographic Channel] had the vision. He basically said, “How about we do the whole world?!” So, I looked at him and I said, “Okay. How long do you want it? How much money do you want to spend?, bah bah bah”, and we pounded fists and that was it and the deal was born that day, almost two years ago. EB: Amazing. So this is live...on...? Al: All live July 9th here, July 10th in Europe and Africa and the other 172 countries where it will be broadcast. EB: That is a feat of coordination – thanks to technical know-how and great people?! Al: What we said is, “We don’t know how to put this together,” but we do know how to hire the best people to figure this out so we hired the best live director, Glenn Weiss, who’s won 13 Emmy Awards. We hired the best technical manager, Gail DePoli, who won probably more than that, the best line producers, and we said, “Okay, here’s a challenge and let’s figure it out.” And so even now, a couple of weeks out from the broadcast we’re still trying to figure stuff out! But by the time July 9th rolls around we’re going to have a kick-ass show. EB: So, do you have a sense of what you’re going to capture live from the Earth? Al: We know some of the things we’ll find. For example, we’ll have a scout plane with a receive dish over Fredericks, Alaska looking for humpback whales which are always there this time of year. A boat containing scientists with a drone will approach them and fly the drone right over the humpback’s blowhole. When the humpback exhales, the snot will fall on the lens, the drone will come back to the boat and its DNA will be analyzed. EB: Amazing. Al: We know we have a Golden Eagle in Oregon that will have a tiny little camera and transmitter on its head. We will watch it as its soaring and measure its speed as it plunges at almost 200 MPH, and we’ll see the bird’s eye view. That we know we have. Now, if a storm comes in that could mess things up. There are certain things we expect to find others we don’t know. EB: Animal sex? Al: Animal sex -- we’re hoping for that once each half hour over the course of the two hour broadcast. Other things we just don’t know. In Maasai Mara, we will have tracked every pride in the Maasai Mara in Kenya. We’ll be out there with three vehicles with cameras that can shoot at night so it looks like daylight. We’ll have the very best camerawoman in the world – Sophie Darlington who knows all these lions by name and we hope, and expect, to get them on the hunt and maybe get a kill but we just don’t know. EB: I understand this will take place in all the time zones around the world and so animals will be doing different things at different times as well… Al: Exactly, so It’s the middle of the night in Kenya; it’s dawn at the coast of Thailand, and it’s low tide, because of the full moon. It’s the lowest tide of the month and these Macaque monkeys are on the rocks at the edge of the shore and start smashing clams on the rocks and start eating the clams. They don’t know people so they’re not afraid and people can walk right up and watch this behavior. One of the reasons we’re doing this broadcast July 9th is because it’s the full moon closest to the summer equinox, so it’s the longest day with a full moon. EB So Phil Keoghan just walked by, we're at the kick-off event for this on Nat Geo, and Jane Lynch is another US based host. Phil obviously is used to traveling all over the world, what are your expectations for the host? What will Jane and Phil be doing? Al: Phil keeps saying "give me more, give me more, I want to get up to speed on everything." Phil has been everywhere and so he's going to take us everywhere. EB: Excellent. Al: Jane is fascinated by just about everything, so that fascination and that sense of humor will be an important part of the broadcast. Then we have another pure animal expert who has a tremendous amount of television experience. He's been on Jimmy Fallon and others; his name is Chris Packham, he will know the number of vertebrae in every mammal that we're seeing. EB: Well everybody knows that. Al: They certainly will after this airing. EB: Al, is there an environmental angle to this? Is there a cause overlay to the show? Al: Good question, we discussed this very early on and we decided no. This is to simply show everybody the wonder of wildlife around the globe. Whatever conservation message they may want to take from that, that's up to them, but we are not pushing any environmental cause. EB: Okay well hopefully it will inspire people either way. Thank you so much Al Berman, we're really looking forward to Earth Live, live, and a brand new kind of reality show. Al: A brand new kind of animal documentary. So it's much more than a reality show, it’s capturing the world live, and the fact that technology has evolved to allow us to do that is remarkable. EB: Thank you so much Al Berman, Executive Producer of Earth Live, coming up on Nat Geo July 9th, in real time! Al: Thank You.
