In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about unhappy achievers. We talk far more often about impostor syndrome than we do unhappy achievers yet both are rooted in an unhealthy relationship with achievement. This week, I'm talking with Josh Dodes, a psychotherapist who coined the term “unhappy achievers” to describe professionals who feel unsatisfied, or even empty, despite their high levels of success. Here we talk about the similarities and differences between unhappy achievers and those who struggle with impostor syndrome. We also talk about what we can do as parents to minimize the threat of unhealthy attachments to achievement. And we explore how to know when it's time to seek help.About My GuestJosh Dodes is a psychotherapist in private practice in the Philadelphia area. He studied psychology at Yale, received his master's degree from NYU, and trained at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center in New York. He coined the term "Unhappy Achievers" in 2017 and was asked to write a blog on the topic for Psychology Today-- a blog which has now connected with more than 150,000 readers. Josh is also a former professional musician who toured internationally with his own band (the Josh Dodes Band, which starred on VH1's Emmy-nominated Bands on the Run) and as a band member for dozens of other artists. This experience before becoming a psychotherapist led him to be particularly familiar with the emotional struggles of high-achieving performers.~Connect with Josh:Website: www.unhappyachievers.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/joshdodesFast Company article: https://www.fastcompany.com/91228056/why-some-of-the-highest-achievers-are-painfully-unhappy-according-to-a-yale-trained-psychotherapistPsychology Today blog: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/unhappy-achievers~Connect with Kim and The Impostor Syndrome Files:Join the free Impostor Syndrome Challenge:https://www.kimmeninger.com/challengeLearn more about the Leading Humans discussion group:https://www.kimmeninger.com/leadinghumansgroupJoin the Slack channel to learn from, connect with and support other professionals: https://forms.gle/Ts4Vg4Nx4HDnTVUC6Join the Facebook group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/leadinghumansSchedule time to speak with Kim Meninger directly about your questions/challenges: https://bookme.name/ExecCareer/strategy-sessionConnect on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimmeninger/Website:https://kimmeninger.com

How Context and Personal Values Influence What You Eat with Josh Hillis

Happy Satiated Saturday! I've gone out to eat sushi many times. Several years ago, when I had to go to a sushi restaurant for a work meeting, I thought, "Sure, no problem."On this particular afternoon, the restaurant was loud and bustling. I could barely hear anyone down the table, and I was there with people who didn't necessarily put my body at ease. By the end of the meal, I was doubled over in digestive pain. At the time, I didn't want anyone to know how much pain I was in. So, I used the excuse that my then-boyfriend (and now-husband) had texted me and I needed to go home. I went home and immediately got into an epsom salt bath and as an experience of safety returned to my body, the digestive pain dissipated and went away. This was one of those powerful experiences where I deeply felt, this was not about the food. This was about the context in which I was eating the food in.The context surrounding your meals—the environment, emotions, beliefs, nervous system states, and inner narratives—shapes not only what you eat but also how much you eat. Your interactions with food are a reflection of both the world around you and the world within you. Your internal and external landscapes come together shaping the food choices you make.In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Josh Hillis, coach, author, and creator of Eating Skills about: Importance of understanding personal valuesRole of self-determination theoryNecessity of context in making food choicesSignificance of practicing self-awarenessLearning to recognize hunger cues Impact of emotional states on eating behaviorsYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/how-context-and-personal-values-influence-what-you-eatWith Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Josh: Website: https://joshhillis.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshuahillis/Book: Lean & StrongSupport the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportMy favorite water filter: https://www.pureeffectfilters.com/#a_aid=somaticeatingReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/STEPHANIEMARAUse my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPl Special thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. ...

Welcome to Episode 41 of the Profitable Web Designer Podcast, where we're committed to helping web designers to stop undercharging, overdelivering, overworking, overworking and create profitable, sustainable web design businesses. I'm Shannon Mattern, your host and founder of the Web Designer Academy where we teach the business side of running a web design business, and if you wanna make a consistent, full-time income as a web designer but you're struggling with things like pricing, boundaries, mindset and marketing and you're EXHAUSTED from going it alone… well, my friend, you're in the right place.  Love the show? Tap here to leave us a rating and review! This week I'm chatting with Josh Hall about the challenges businesses are facing right now and how to navigate them! Like me, Josh is also a Web Design Coach. He started web design as a freelancing side hustle, and over the years has managed to grow it to a six-figure business today. And, funnily enough, we are actually both based at Columbus, Ohio! He's also the host of the Web Design Business Podcast. 3 key points from my talk with Josh: There are always going to be periods of ups and downs in business. You need to be proactive and learn to problem solve based on the data in order to adapt to challenges. Trying to go it alone can cause you to make mistakes that perpetuate the problem - having a coach or mentor to help you get to the root of that problem will help you see the reality. Never turn off your sales strategy, even if you need to lessen it during your busier seasons. By always carving out time for your most effective marketing and sales activities, you'll build a pipeline for when you come out of your booked out season. We also talk about: Trends in the challenges our clients are facing and how we're seeing that what used to be easy might now take a bit longer. The difference between leads and clients and how you should pay attention to feedback from the people who are paying you, not just talking to you during a consultation. Tactics to get you through the down times in business and how it takes courage to push through these times. In Part 1 we got their stories, of Hollie's troubled youth and how it put her on this incredible path, so go back and listen to part 1 to get her full story. And we got Josh's story of being a young man in Morocco and working with refugees from West Africa, watching their abuse and deportment that became so formative for him as he built a life of humanitarian work.Today we want to move on with our conversation with them so we can glean insight from their wisdom.Hollie and Josh, welcome back to the show.Let's dive right back into our conversation and pick up where we left off…..Last episode we finished up with the challenges teens are having with connection, this episodes let's go to the next obvious question:Tune into our conversation about:1. What keeps parents from connecting with their teens and young adult children?2. Why are you able to connect with teens when the parents cannot?3. Let's talk about developing resilience. In your book you talk about the need of accepting that pain is a part of life. You say, “We realized that we didn't really know what it meant to look at pain without trying to avoid it. In essence we didn't know how to be ok with not feeling ok.” Let's talk about this idea of acceptance of all the emotions of living, but then let's talk about how this is a part of becoming resilient. 4. How do we fill our resiliency tanks? How do we lay a foundation of resiliency?5. Why do young people listen and how do you keep their attention? “In your book you gave some great advice - “Make sure what you say today is living and void of judgement.” “If you can make them feel loved and valued at least once a day, you'll have a great start.”6. How do we deal with and avoid pain? What are healthy ways of dealing with pain? How to contact Hollie and Josh:WEBSITE: https://www.joshandhollie.com/EMAIL: info@joshandhollie.comFACEBOOK: @joshandholliecoachingINSTAGRAM: @josh_and_hollieTWITTER: @JoshHollie2I've spent a lot of time lately thinking about how hard communication is for everyone. When you think about it, we all have different experiences, different triggers, different insecurities, different stories about everything. And with those stories that we are telling ourselves in our own heads, we are creating different realities. In Bang Head Here, Josh and Hollie say, “We know very little about what's going on her to really know what's going on. It's a reminder that we need to keep our initial opinions and perceptions out of the equation until we have had enough time to be curious, ask questions and create different perspectives and possibilities, and to give the benefit of the doubt.”Your challenge this week is to give someone the benefit of the doubt. When you are hit with frustration or fear in one of your relationships, give them the benefit of the doubt and approach them with that in mind.So many teens right now seem to struggle so deeply. Suicide rates are so high. Social media doesn't help. We're dealing with the first generation being raised on the internet, hitting our heads against that proverbial wall, and finding our way around outcomes we've not had to deal with before. Bang Head Here may be a great resource for you. We'll see you in two weeks.

It seems like accounting is accounting and tax is tax, and you can do these things for anyone who needs them.  The problem with generalism is that it leads to broad but shallow expertise. And shallow expertise is not worth as much as deep expertise. Acquiring deep expertise requires focusing on a specific type of client.  Focusing in this way can feel scary and limiting: the thinking is that it will be harder to find clients because there will be fewer of them. Or, “it's hard enough to generate business as it is, so why would I want to limit the kinds of clients I work for?” Here today to talk with me about his journey taking his CPA firm into niches is my guest, Josh Lance. Everyday Legends
047 - Just Be Nice with Josh Reid Jones

Everyday Legends

“Just be nice” - an often used sentiment that can, well, often lack depth.   Statements like ‘just be nice” or “don't be a dick” lack any understanding of why someone might or might not be those things.   It's the same as saying “eat less if you want to lose weight” - sure, thanks for that, I had somehow missed that food is a major contributing factor to body weight.   It has no attempt to understand the behaviour behind it.   Everyone knows being nice is a good thing. Everyone knows not to be a dick, not to lie cheat and steal, everyone knows not to fight people for a few potentially hurtful words.   Simple statements risk being shallow and hallow.   This is why when I had on today's guest I had to put this to him; Josh Reid Jones - Founder of the Just Be Nice Project. In this Episode: Josh is a wonderfully insightful, determined, huge-hearted and nice man. Not to be confused with a ‘Nice Guy' (a differentiation we explore in this episode).   In this chat, we dive into the origins of the Just Be Nice idea as well as the organisation that, as Josh states it, is the only one in the world breaking down the real ins and outs of making an impact and helping organisations (and people) work out how to make the most impact in the community.   This goes beyond the tired and cliched model of charity - something Josh breaks down in a deeply accurate and wonderfully worded call out of charity style advertising and money-raising model.   We explore Josh's take on making an impact in the world, starting with one person.   And we look at the pyramid of being nice, starting with ‘being nice' then to ‘being really good at something' to ‘doing good'.   This was a fascinating chat in which I really enjoyed diving into the next piece with Josh. I trust you take something valuable away from this episode. Please share it with a man you think could benefit from it also.   And if you can prioritise 2 minutes, I ask you to do ME a solid and like and rate and review this podcast on iTunes - it supports us in getting this podcast in front of more everyday men who can benefit from it but don't yet have this information.   Josh's bio: Josh Reid Jones is a social impact professional and social entrepreneur.  He is the founder of the Just Be Nice project with the aim of changing the way that people help people; until they are housed, employed, and have positive mental health outcomes. Josh has been relentless in his pursuit of creating an environment that ensures people in need get the help that they need, when they need it, for as long as they need it, regardless of how they come to need help. Josh works daily to engage businesses, schools, organisations and communities in the process of creating extraordinary positive change in the world, through making ordinary positive change. Educating and engaging people while managing the resources necessary to ensure that everyone has assistance with housing, employment, and positive mental health outcomes. A non-executive director of one of Tasmania's largest social service providers Colony 47, a member of the board of directors for the Port Phillip EcoCentre, an RUOK Day ambassador and recipient of a range of awards and scholarships for outstanding contributions to social impact and non-profit leadership, Josh is committed to improving and expanding social impact and equality of opportunity both domestically and abroad.   Where to find Josh: Website: https://www.jbnproject.com/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/joshreidjones YouTube: https://youtube.com/joshreidjones Other Ways To Consume this podcast: iTunes Spotify YouTube   Get Involved: Subscribe to podcast on Apple Follow on Spotify Sign up for Mike's LEGENDAILY Emails to help you with a daily shot of loving straight talk direct to your pocket Want to explore DEEP coaching support and guidance with Mike? Today I spoke with Josh Spell, licensed social worker. He danced with Pacific Northwest Ballet & Kansas City Ballet. He currently works with dancers around the country centering on dance from a holistic perspective and offering a variety of mental health tools. Today, I finally talk about THE topic, eating disorders. I mention in the interview, that I kind of feel like I have been putting it off, honestly. I'm not sure why, but when I have been putting something off and check in with myself, it is usually because of some deeper reason. In this case, it's my own struggle with disordered eating. I finally felt ready to broach the subject, and Josh did not disappoint. He specializes in the treatment and prevention of eating disorders and has created a specially designed protocol he is currently implementing with the Pacific Northwest Ballet School. He gives some great practical advice for teachers, directors, and parents of dancers on how and when to communicate with dancers who may be struggling. Generally speaking, for most, the second largest percentage of an individual’s wealth is derived from their retirement accounts. The unfortunate circumstance is that one really can’t do much to control their retirement account, or so you may think...Our special guest on today’s episode is Josh Plave, Founder of Wall to Main. Josh is an expert in understanding how to take control of and leverage retirement accounts to invest in real assets like real estate. By structuring Self Directed IRA’s (SDIRA) and Checkbook Control, Josh has found his niche in maximizing the potential of his retirement accounts and educating others to do the same. Josh also specializes in helping investors use their retirement funds to passively invest in real estate. At a young age of 16, he opened his first Roth IRA due to the influence of his grandfather and mother who were both CPAs. He founded his company, Wall to Main, after the unfortunate passing of his grandfather and mother and funded it from the IRA’s he inherited from them. After forming his company, he pioneered the creation of the industry’s first UBIT calculator aimed to assist investors in calculating the expected taxation from using a Self-Directed IRA to invest. Josh provides all of the tips and tricks needed to invest quickly, safely and inexpensively with an existing retirement account. In this episode, we cover:What is a SDIRA and what are its limitations? When is the right time to utilize your self-directed IRAs and how to properly utilize it? What is UBIT and how does it impact our returns? How does the UBIT Calculator work and what benefits will it provide you as an investor? What strategies did Josh used to build his portfolio? What are some of Josh success stories?Tune in to the entire episode as Josh covers these informative points and so much more!Final Four Questions:1. What are the things that you do for your continued education to help further your investing?Josh: “For my continued education, it's interesting, it's kind of evolved. I've gone from, I started with podcasts. And, you know, I got all the basics. But once you become an operator, I don't listen to podcasts as much that kind of when I see an operator or someone with a special skill set that I want to listen to, I jump in, but I've really moved towards books, and specific, you know, topics that I'm really interested in at the time. And I found that it really is, it's a nice opportunity to expand my mind. I was never really into books early on and I've now read a couple hundred.”2. What have been some of the most impactful lessons that you've learned along the way?Josh: “People may have heard of before, but it's been really impactful for me is really focused on one thing. People get a lot of shiny object syndrome, especially when they have this entrepreneurial spirit and they want to build something for themselves or for their family. I talked to one guy, he does multifamily, he does office space, he does industrial he does this night and like he you know, he's got his finger in his hands and a lot of different pies and which is great. But I like to really master one specific topic. 3. What advice would you give to the listeners to help them grow their businesses?Josh: “It sounds so cliche, but really just educate yourself and stay curious. And so, just don't sit on your laurels, always make sure that you're learning. Stay curious as it makes you become a more well-rounded individual.”4. Tell the listeners how they can learn more about and get connected with you.Josh:Website: www.walltomain.com
