In this special video podcast combo between Why I'll Never Make It and Closing Night, I'm joined by theater historian and author Jennifer Ashley Tepper, who has written a truly remarkable book - Women Writing Musicals: The Legacy That the History Books Left Out. Jennifer's work is the first comprehensive exploration of women who have shaped Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals over the last century and beyond. From Tin Pan Alley composers to protest writers of the 1970s, and the voices shaping today's theater landscape, this book is a treasure trove of history and inspiration. Together, we explore the hurdles these women faced, their remarkable stories, and the profound ways they've shaped the art form. And Jennifer's book resonates deeply with both podcasts: Why I'll Never Make It delves into the challenges of building a creative career Closing Night reflects on the legacy of shows may not always get the spotlight they deserve In our conversation, we highlight trailblazers like Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins, a Black playwright and novelist whose multi-hyphenate career began in the late 1800s; then there's Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford, the longest-running female duo in musical theater history that began in 1955 and continues today; and then Shaina Taub, the Tony Award-winning force behind the Broadway musical Suffs. These are just a few of the extraordinary women we discuss—names that, thanks to Jennifer's book, are finally getting their due. --- Why I'll Never Make It and Closing Night are independent productions of WINMI Media and Patrick Oliver Jones. One of the shows Mickey-Jo recently saw during his recent two week trip to New York was SUFFS, the brand new Musical currently playing at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway. This is Mickey-Jo's ★★★★★ review of the musical. Suffs, the six-time Tony Award-nominated musical from Shaina Taub about the lives and legacies of unsung changemakers in the women's suffrage movement of 1920, is marching onto Broadway with producers Hillary Rodham Clinton and Malala Yousafzai. Just about century ago, the Nineteenth Amendment secured the voting rights of some women, largely thanks to key figures of the women's suffrage movement: Inez Milholland, Ida B. Wells, and Alice Paul, to name a few. However, this movement was not without its faults. With an honest, 21st-century lens, the Suffs musical examines both the crucial building blocks and the cracks in the foundation of the women's suffrage movement through the women that pioneered it. With a book and score by fast-rising composer Shaina Taub (also known for collaborating with Elton John on The Devil Wears Prada musical), Suffs off Broadway brings forth an exciting new voice in musical theatre. Taub now makes her Broadway debut after winning the 2014 recipient of the esteemed Jonathan Larson Award and earning acclaim with her work composing and starring in the Public's Twelfth Night and As You Like It musical adaptations. Tony Award nominee and two-time Obie Award winner Leigh Silverman (Violet) directs Suffs on Broadway. Alongside Taub in the cast is Tony Award winner Nikki M. James as Ida B. Wells, Tony Award nominee Jenn Colella as Carrie Chapman Catt, Grace McLean as President Woodrow Wilson, Hannah Cruz as Inez Milholland, Kim Blanck as Ruza Wenclawska, Anastacia McCleskey as Mary Church Terrell, Ally Bonino as Lucy Burns, Tsilala Brock as Dudley Malone, Nadia Dandashi as Doris Stevens, and Tony Award nominee Emily Skinner as Alva Belmont/Phoebe Burn. Rounding out the company are Hawley Gould as the Alternate for Alice Paul, Jaygee Macapugay as Mollie Hay, and Laila Drew as Phyllis Terrell/Robin. The ensemble will feature Dana Costello as well as Jenna Bainbridge, Monica Tulia Ramirez, and Ada Westfall making their Broadway debuts. The cast will also include Christine Heesun Hwang, Kirsten Scott , Housso Semon , and D'Kaylah Unique Whitley. • 00:00 | introduction 02:14 | overview / synopsis 07:02 | the material 15:38 | performances • About Mickey-Jo: As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. [REBROADCAST FROM May 9, 2022] Composer and performer Shaina Taub is the creator of the musical, "SUFFS," which was a hit off-Broadway show in 2022. Taub starred as Alice Paul, one of the leaders of the suffragist movement and the campaign for the 19th Amendment. The musical is now opening on Broadway, with previews beginning at Music Box Theatre on March 26. We revisit our conversation with Taub from when the show first premiered off-Broadway.
A new Broadway show called “Suffs” opens next week. The musical- written by Shaina Taub and supported by producers Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai - tells the story of how American women got the vote. It was supposed to debut in 2020 for the 100th anniversary of American women's suffrage. Like many productions… it got delayed due to the pandemic. As our reporter Marine Saint finds, that delay means the show's focus on women's rights is timelier than ever.

Two great interviews on this episode of the podcast. First up, Top Gun and ER star, Anthony Edwards is back on Broadway in the new play Prayer For The French Republic. Tamsen catches up with Anthony at Manhattan Theatre Club. And later, Shaina Taub makes history. She's just the second woman ever to write the book, music, and lyrics, AND star in her own Broadway musical. Beth Stevens catches up with Shaina.
Dylan and Connor are joined by the fabulous Liana Hunt (Back to the Future, Mamma Mia). We learn all about Liana's childhood of tapping trees for maple syrup while also fostering her love of musicals through Disney Princesses. This trio clicks instantly, relishing in tales from StageDoor Manor, Liana's longtime friendship with Shaina Taub, and her love story with Larkin Bogan from NYC classmates to husband and wife. Liana talks about her time as Katherine in Newsies on Broadway, as well as the tour of Mamma Mia that led her to make her debut at the Winter Garden Theatre. She teases her experience in The Devil Wears Prada musical, and what led her to decide to audition for Back to the Future. Javier Muñoz (Hamilton, In The Heights) stars in The Devil Wears Prada, the new musical based on the film and novel, with songs by Elton John and Shaina Taub. Javier plays Nigel (instantly erasing any memories of Stanley Tucci), and discusses how creating a role is less about ego and more about serving the story and character; the challenges of rehearsing changes during the day while performing the existing show at night; how he gave his first Broadway performance of Alexander Hamilton in front of President Barack Obama and his First Lady Michelle; what originating the song “Seen” means to him and his activism (and how precious it is to work with his “Seen” partner); and how debuting a song written by Sir Elton John differs from performing songs written by Sir Lin-Manuel Miranda.
