No, not Taylor Swift's boyfriend. Taylor Swift's boyfriend's brother. Ha, it sounds like I'm explaining a soap opera. Don Argott's football documentary about veteran Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce dropped last September on Amazon Prime. The movie recounts Kelce's whirlwind 2022-23 season, in which his team won 14 of 17 games, landing them a spot in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs...where Taylor Swift's boyfriend (then-admirer) Travis plays. It was the first time two brothers went head-to-head in football's championship game. "Daniel, who fucking cares about football?" I do. But more than that, I care about what isn't on the field. I'm here to see Jason Kelce sing on the Eagles' Christmas album. I'm here for the eerieness that is to see the New Heights podcast (Jason and Travis shooting the shit while occasionally discussing the NFL season) from Jason's point of view - staring at a computer while sitting in his house. [Sounds dumb, but can you imagine how weird/cool it'd be to see something like the Jurassic Park chase scene from the T-Rex's POV? Idk, some images just feel charmingly cursed seen in any other fashion.] But more than anything, I'm here for Jason himself. Here's a guy at the top of his game (hehe) for more than a decade, contemplating retirement as his family looks to expand with the addition of a third daughter. He's 35, popping Toradol (mega-Aspirin) like Tic Tacs and worried about what the repeated acts of slamming his body into 300 lb motherfuckers will do to his body and brain over the next 35+ years of life. Every logical assessment says "Stop." And yet... --------- Follow Daniel on: Twitter - TheMovies_Pod Instagram & Threads - themoviespod Letterboxd - The Movies Music: "The Cape" - Guy Clark --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/themoviespodcast/message

In their riveting and touching new film, “KELCE” (now streaming on Prime Video), Don Argott, director, and Sheena Joyce, producer, walk the line between documentarians and fans of the Philadelphia Eagles. For two years, their cameras had extraordinary access to Jason Kelce, Philly's favorite center, and his family as he considers retirement, strives toward a second Super Bowl win, and supports and raises his growing brood. In true Philadelphia form, Argott and Joyce are as scrappy as they are successful and show their audience there's much more to Jason and his brother Travis Kelce (the tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs) than just playing professional football. Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce, producers of the new Amazon Prime documentary, “Kelce” join the show today. The film follows Eagles team captain & All-Pro center Jason Kelce during what he thought might be his final NFL season (2022-23). Multiple storylines are spotlighted along the way: the success of Jason's Eagles and of his brother Travis' Kansas City Chiefs (whom the Eagles met in the Super Bowl), the popularity of the podcast Jason & Travis started, the pregnancy of Jason's wife Kylie (due to give birth less than 2 weeks after the Super Bowl), and Jason's parents Ed & Donna (Please note, the documentary does contain a large volume of profanities and carries a "YA-16+" rating by Amazon). Garry "G" Cobb (11-year NFL veteran (Eagles, Lions, Cowboys)) and longtime local broadcaster, checks in as well. Apropos to the Kelce documentary conversation, Cobb's current job involves offering counsel to NFL players as they transition from the NFL to retirement (voluntary or not, often at a very early age). Cobb shares how a player (and anyone) can find one's identity and worth--and true satisfaction--in knowing God, independent of achievements or circumstances. Spector – A Legend, and A Murderer

Phil Spector was a musical genius. His brilliance as a producer made him a legend. On February 3rd 2003 he shot Lana Clarkson dead. In 2009, he was convicted of murder, and died in prison on January 16th 2021. Spector is a four-part Showtime docu-series (available to watch on Sky Documentaries in the U.K.). In it, series co-directors Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott examine not only Spector's ‘life and legacy' but also the person of Lana Clarkson.  As they tell host, Matthew Sherwood, they want to make Lana ‘more than just a footnote in the Phil Spector story' by bringing ‘her out as a fully fleshed out human being.' In doing so, they take the viewer on a more challenging but ultimately more rewarding journey. The Phil Spector that they present is no monster. Rather, he is a deeply damaged human being; one whose flaws led ultimately to his downfall.  In this episode of Factual America we learn that in order to present as full a picture of Spector as possible, Sheena and Don spoke to a wide variety of people. Among them, the lead detectives in the Lana Clarkson murder case, as well as others with first-hand knowledge of some of the incredible stories told about Spector during his career. The docu-series even has recordings of Phil Spector speaking on the night of the murder. With Matthew, Sheena and Don discuss the link between musical genius and mental illness – why it seems to affect artists and not people in other industries; the role of money and power, and whether we can still engage with the work of artists who have done terrible things. They also shed light on who Lana Clarkson was. As Sheena says, Lana ‘was more than Phil Spector's victim. She was a successful working actress... a daughter and a sister and a friend who by all accounts brought light and joy into the lives of everyone she met.' Spector is the story of a tragedy, of a legacy corrupted, and two lives wasted. It is a story that moves in the light, and dark. In Factual America #120, go behind the scenes with Matthew Sherwood, Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott. Watch the episode at https://factualamerica.com “There have also been people that criticised us for contextualising Phil's behaviour, as if that's somehow giving him a pass... it was important to us to present him as a multifaceted human being. He was a loving and devoted father to his daughter Nicole... It doesn't negate the fact that he murdered Lana Clarkson.” – Sheena M. Eddie Munson wore a jacket all season that shared his love for the rock legend, DIO.  The music of Ronnie James Dio not only inspired and influenced the fictional character of Eddie Munson, it also inspired and influenced the lives of many in the 70s, 80's, and even today.  Although Ronnie James Dio passed away in 2010, his legacy and memory live on through his music, fans, friends, and family. Fully authorized by Dio's estate and executive produced by his widow, Wendy Dio, the documentary, "DIO: Dreamers Never Die" comes to theaters worldwide for TWO DAYS only on Wednesday, September 28 and Sunday, October 2. Click to find a theatre near you. The film delves deep into Dio's incredible rise from a '50's doo-wop crooner to his early rock days in Elf and Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, to replacing Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath, and finally cementing his rock star status with his own band, DIO. In this exclusive interview with Wendy Dio and the film's directors, Don Argott and Demian Fenton, Darrell and Jason talk with them about  Dio's role in Stranger Things 4, the influence of Ronnie's music, Dio's charity work, the world of metal music, and more. "I was 23 when I first approached him about making this film," filmmaker Robert Weide says in the trailer for his IFC Films documentary Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time. "I became obsessed. What high school kid isn't going to gobble this up?" Weide continudes, holding a copy of the author's dark comic novel Breakfast of Champions, "He thinks what I think about the world." Thirty-nine years ago, Weide reached out to his literary idol proposing a documentary on Vonnegut's life and work. Shooting began in 1988 and the doc reflects the friendship and bond Weide and Vonnegut formed over the decades. "I was always filming on and off with him over the years," says Weide in the trailer. Vonnegut died on April 11, 2007. Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time dives into the author's upbringing and his creative output, spanning his childhood in Indianapolis, his experience as a prisoner of war in World War II, his marriage, family and divorce, his early careers as a publicist for General Electric and a car salesman, and his long years as a struggling writer, leading to eventual superstardom in 1969 following the publication of his lightning-bolt anti-war novel Slaughterhouse-Five (which would later be adapted into the 1972 movie from George Roy Hill). The documentary follows Weide's odyssey as he examines the impact of Vonnegut's legacy on his own life, extending far beyond the printed page. Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time was announced as part of the lineup for Doc NYC today. IFC is releasing the documentary in theaters and VOD on November 19. Weide produced and wrote Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time and he co-directed with Don Argott. Weide was nominated for a Documentary Feature Oscar in 1999 for Lenny Bruce: Swear to Tell the Truth. He would go on to win a Primetime Emmy for that docu in Non-Fiction Programming, Picture Editing, as well as two other Emmy wins for Directing in a Comedy Series (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Outstanding Informational Special (W.C. Fields: Straight Up). He is the EP of HBO's award winning comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm and has directed 29 episodes throughout the series' 10 seasons.

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing BATMAN & BILL (2017), a HULU documentary currently streaming on the service. Directed by Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce; the film follows Marc Tyler Nobleman, a writer and speaker, who one day comes upon a story that propels him into a journey of discovery about the true origin of the acclaimed Batman character, a character who had always been solely credited to Bob Kane. From here, Marc goes on a quest to learn more about Bill Finger the man and legacy of a brilliant artist/creator who was uncredited and denied for terribly too long the fame, fortune and accolades that were only showered on Kane. Through talking heads from all sorts of personalities in the comics world and not, the filmmakers weave a glorious tale of suspense, tension, disbelief but ultimate redemption for Bill and his family. As the saying goes, not all heroes wear capes and a special shout out of love and appreciation to Marc Tyler Nobleman for relentlessly pursuing the truth and for setting the wheels in motion so that Bill Finger could receive the respect he always deserved but was never able to see in his own lifetime. The film is heartbreaking, infuriating and compelling and you don't have to love comics or Batman to revel in the story of this quiet man who should have been lionized for contributing greatly to the iconic legacy of the Batman character. The film has a run time of 1 h 33 m and is not rated but there is no harsh language or situations. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library. Don Argott's latest documentary, KEEP SWEET explores the leakage left behind by the self-proclaimed “Prophet of the FLDS”, Warren Jeffs and how Jeffs' demands for absolute loyalty, and the complete adherence to religion dogma, requiring strict dress codes, banishing community celebrations and casting out followers who didn't fall in line irreparably damaged the lives of so many. His controversial reign ended with a conviction for sexual assault with underage girls, landing him in jail for life. Jeffs' downfall sent shock waves throughout the community, with some continuing to pledge their loyalty to him, while others turned their backs on Jeff's and the FLDS religion altogether. Ten years after his arrest, those left behind attempt to rebuild their community. KEEP SWEET is an allegory for the unsettling reality we are living through in America. Can we learn how to live with one another despite our different ideologies, or are we destined to live apart? Director Don Argott (Art of the Steal, Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time) joins us for a conversation on his own perception of the FLDS people living in Colorado City, Arizona, Warren Jeffs pernicious impact on the lives of people who trusted him and lengths that people will go to for their beliefs. Hi everyone! Just me today, as I continue taking a deep dive into documentaries, a semi-revival of our Documentary Thursdays segment from last year. This week, I’ll be tackling “Framing John DeLorean”, a film that promises a lot more than it delivers, much like the car of the same name. You’ll find out what I mean in a little bit, but for two other recommendations, definitely check out “Meeting Gorbachev” (Episode #641), last week’s documentary feature, and “Casting JonBenét”, a 2017 Netflix documentary that actually delivers what this film promises. Before the review, we’ll be showing more love for our friends at the Ocho Duro Parlay Hour. Every week, the whole crew sit down and go over a bunch of topics, from sports to comics to television and movies. Huge shoutout to the ODPH crew for all their support during Reign of Terror 2019. You can find them on Twitter and Instagram @ODParlayHour and on Facebook @ochoduroparlayhour. Lots of great content on a variety of topics! Subscribe to stay current with the latest releases. Here we go! ///// Today’s movie is “Framing John DeLorean”, the Sundance Selects documentary directed by Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce and written for the screen by Dan Greeney and Alexandra Orton. The documentary tracks the rise and fall of pathological businessman John DeLorean, with a combination of actual footage and contemporary interviews, along with a series of re-enactments by well-known celebrities who give their thoughts in-between filming scenes. No spoilers. I’m starting today’s interview with how a majority of people will learn about this documentary – the marketing campaign. The trailer bills “Framing John DeLorean” as a revolutionary new kind of documentary, one that will change the way we look at documentaries forever, some new blend of documentary, re-enactment, actual footage, and commentary. Of course, this kind of experience definitely intrigues me, a new take on a standard film process. A similar promise was made and delivered in the 2017 documentary film “Casting JonBenét”, which examined the case of JonBenét Ramsey through the eyes of families auditioning for parts in a dramatization of the infamous events. If you want to see a film that actually pushes the boundaries, then check out that film, because “Framing John DeLorean” definitely does not deliver on its promise. Of course, it’s only as I sat down to write this review that I began to appreciate the wry irony of such a marketing campaign for this particular story. When it comes to the career of John DeLorean, perception always outweighs reality, from his invention of the American muscle car in the Pontiac GTO at General Motors, through his failed attempt to sustain a fledgling car company through a series of mistakes. I went into this film much like the buyers of the DMC, sold a new kind of documentary that would stand out amongst the competition, and ending up with a mildly unique documentary about a slightly extraordinary figure. I’m not sure whether to be angry or disappointed or impressed, and maybe that is the best way to approach the documentary. “Framing John DeLorean” is structured pretty much like any other documentary that relies upon dramatizations to recreate pivotal moments. John DeLorean is played by Alec Baldwin, supermodel wife Cristina Ferrare by Morena Baccarin, former business partner Bill Collins by Josh Charles, and other roles by Dean Winters, Michael Rispoli, Jason Jones, and others. The only slightly revolutionary move here is some behind-the-scenes interviews with Baldwin and Baccarin, which would normally be played in the special features portion of a DVD, but instead are inserted throughout the film. Aside from one story about DeLorean calling Baldwin to have him consider playing DeLorean in a movie, there’s really not much insight brought into DeLorean’s story. I think it also lessened the impact of the dramatizations themselves, having to switch between actors as themselves and actors as their roles, perhaps another wry, unintentional similarity to DeLorean’s private and public personas. “Framing John DeLorean” might not be revolutionary, but the documentary itself is well-made. Dramatizations aside, the standard documentary portions have a great selection of media assets, including still frames, varying qualities of video from his decades-long career, and audio recordings, especially surrounding the famous attempt by the FBI to frame him for a cocaine deal. Well-chosen assets help tell the rise of John DeLorean, but the interviews with his kids, Zach DeLorean and Kathryn DeLorean, shows the real contempt for the effects of DeLorean’s actions, from the destruction of his family, to the massive disruptions to the economy of Northern Ireland after the closure of the DeLorean plant due to financial maleficence. In fact, by the end of the documentary, I had kind of wished Zach had narrated his father’s story the whole way. Two asides. First, the story of the DeLorean Motor Company is frighteningly similar to the troubles in the rise of Tesla, which also only survived after an injection of cash from the government to continue operations, and shows another executive learning the hard way that starting a company takes a lot more than money or investors. You can see some of those similarities in 2011’s “Revenge of the Electric Car” that tracked the recent rise of the modern electric car at Tesla, Nissan, Chevy, and independent converters. Second, they most definitely have a segment about featuring the DeLorean in the “Back to the Future” franchise and speculate about the potential for the DeLorean car itself if it had survived to see the film. I certainly wanted one as a kid, knowing nothing about the disappointment in the cars by actual owners. “Framing John DeLorean” is a documentary that promises a lot more than it delivers, quite similar to the DeLorean Motor Company. However, instead of a failed product, Argott and Joyce deliver a well-made, mostly standard documentary complete with re-enactments, and perhaps too-intrusive commentaries from the actors involved. Documentary fans, or folks interested in learning more about John DeLorean, should absolutely see this film. Just be ready to have a few reservations when you’re done. Rotten Tomatoes: 91% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 67 One Movie Punch: 7.8/10 “Framing John DeLorean” (2019) is not rated and is currently playing on Hulu.

When filmmakers Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce met, it was a match in doc filmmaking heaven. Their first documentary film, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Art_of_the_Steal_(2009_film) (The Art of the Steal), was a Netflix hit that would lead them to their next doc projects, and ultimately to their lives as full-time documentary filmmakers. Their current film, https://www.ifcfilms.com/films/framing-john-delorean (Framing John DeLorean), blurs the lines between fiction and non-fiction narrative, using name actors like Alec Baldwin and Josh Charles, meta filmmaking, and incorporating actual behind-the-scenes footage as a significant storytelling device.   Topics Discussed Lessening the lag time between your doc film projects How meta filmmaking and using behind-the-scenes footage became an impactful storytelling device for Framing John DeLorean Where the blurred lines between fiction and non-fiction meet and when not to cross those lines By nature living the doc life is an unsure, uncertain business that you have to be okay with in order to live it   Additional Resources Trailer for Framing John DeLorean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIa1gn9wVNo Chris in Cambodia SeriesIn Chris in Cambodia, TDL host and doc filmmaker, http://www.chrisparkhurst.com (Chris G. An interview with DON ARGOTT the director of THE ART OF THE STEAL, a documentary that chronicles the long and dramatic struggle for control of the Barnes Foundation, a private collection of Post-Impressionist and early Modern art valued at more than $25 billion. In 1922, Dr. Albert C. Barnes formed a remarkable educational institution around his priceless collection of art, located just five miles outside of Philadelphia. Now, more than 50 years after Barnes' death, a powerful group of moneyed interests have gone to court for control of the art, and intend to bring it to a new museum in Philadelphia. Standing in their way is a group of Barnes' former students and his will, which contains strict instructions stating the Foundation should always be an educational institution, and that the paintings may never be removed.
