Welcome to the 90s NBC Must See TV Single-in-the-City Sitcom Universe! The Single Guy WAS a show…starring Jonathan Silverman, Joey Slotnick, Ming-Na Wen, Jessica Hecht and Ernest Borgnine! Right smack in the middle of Friends and Seinfeld, NBC had a show that seemed to draw on aspects of both shows to create a bridge between the two. Seinfeld was about single people who want to be single. Friends is about single people who want to be married. Along came The Single Guy, a show about one single man amongst a group of married friends. Late 90s television was the era of the single 30-something hanging out in New York city, so why wasn't this show a huge hit? Brynn, Aaron & Barry take to the Manhattan streets (but really the Seinfeld backlot in LA) to find out. The Single Guy was a sitcom starring Jonathan Silverman as a struggling New York writer attempting to manage his way through the dating scene. The show premiered in 1995 on NBC and was immediately thrown into its Thursday night "Must See TV" lineup. The show was given the opportunity of a lifetime when thrown in the 8:30 timeslot placing it right in between the networks two biggest hits, "Friends" & "Seinfeld". The show however was written-off as one in a long line of "singles in the city" sitcoms that emerged in the mid-1990s. After only two seasons The Single Guy was dropped by its network, leaving it as one of the most highly rated shows to ever be canceled. Was the show just a product of "right place, right time" or did it have enough substance to survive on its own? Find out as we do a deep dive into the show's pilot episode. www.S1E1POD.com Starring: Jonathan Silverman, Jessica Hecht, Mark Moses, Joey Slotnick, Ming-Na Wen, Ernest Borgnine, Jeff Bornstein, Olivia d'Abo and Larry Miller

Is dating your father's protege still considered daddy issues if you're a lesbian? Find out all that and more this episode!
"Special" is, well, a special show--a surprisingly honest and nuanced story about disability, sex, dating, and most importantly, the relationship between a gay man and his mother. While Ryan O'Connell is the mastermind of the show, Jessica Hecht's brilliant performance as his mother Karen is at the heart of it. This week we dive into the fourth episode of the second season to discuss one of our favorite topics, navigating grief, plus our own feelings as 30-something creatives who don't have Netflix shows, some love for Lauren Weedman both as Tanya and as Doris in "Looking," and a call for more single take shots of women looking at themselves in a mirror on the day of a funeral, preferably while eating candy or doing their makeup. Hiiii, it’s Kiiim! We are just pleased as punch to have Kimberly Norris Guerrero on the show today. You Might Know Her From The Wilds, The Cherokee Word for Water, The Glorias, Son of the Morning Star, Seinfeld, Naturally Native, and the original Broadway production of August: Osage County. Kimberly was kind enough to indulge our questions about playing Martha’s mom Bernice on our current obsession, The Wilds, playing real life icon and activist Wilma Mankiller (twice!), and getting to imbue her character Johnna in August: Osage County with the varied stories of the real Native women in her life. All that plus, still being recognized as Jerry’s girlfriend Winona on Seinfeld, getting flown to New York for one line on The Sopranos, and her friendship with Hollywood icon Ernest Borgnine. This one was just a total joy. Back on our bullshit with the incomparable Sarita Choudhury. We talk about Sarita’s upcoming horror film Evil Eye out on Amazon Prime on October 13, sitting next to her Homeland husband Mandy Patinkin on an airplane while he reads sheet music, and, of course we had to quiz her on her plethora of lesbian and bisexual characters. In 24 Years by Leslie Ayvazian (Nine Armenians), a couple celebrates their 24th anniversary. Champagne in hand, and huge cast on leg (from an overly enthusiastic soccer mishap), this immobilized husband still manages to stay one step ahead of his exasperated wife and to declare his vows again. Leslie's play features Jessica Hecht (catch her this summer at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Sarah Ruhl's The Clean House directed by PoA vet Rebecca Taichman! July 19-29) and Dominic Fumusa (Edie Falco's ex on "Nurse Jackie"). 24 Years is directed by novelist/playwright/filmmaker/director Peter Hedges (What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Baby Anger, About a Boy, Dan in Real Life). Stay tuned after the performance for a conversation moderated by our Producing Artistic Director, Claudia Catania. And happy anniversaries! Playing on Air is a public radio show and podcast featuring great American short plays with great American actors. We distribute audio productions of contemporary short plays, translating stage works into enduring modern radio theater. We aim to redefine radio drama for today's digital, mobile audience.

While in New York, Hollister & O’Toole had the enormous pleasure of speaking with the amazingly talented writer and director Elliot Thomson – founder of Empire Arts Film Corp. Elliot’s short film “Le Refuge” is currently enjoying a very successful run at festivals around the globe – from Istanbul to the Cleveland International Film Festival – an Oscar-qualifying fest, where it recently won Best Comedy Short out of 224 films. Le Refuge elegantly tells the tale of an American lawyer – on vacation with her family in Lausanne, Switzerland – who’s coming unhinged from the guilt of representing the manufacturer of a cheap car that tips over when it turns left. Talking with Elliot is like viewing his art – witty and thought-provoking – and very, very engaging. We might as well call this podcast How to Make a Film with Integrity. Holding on to Your Vision. Collaborating without Compromising. Elliot aimed high, and landed on his star. Come along for the ride - listen to how his short film is linked to Broadway greats, the New York Philharmonic - and even the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. We spoke to Elliot for nearly 2 hours - truly, one of the most engaging afternoons we’ve had. While we couldn’t manage to whittle that conversation down to a length shorter than “Le Refuge” itself, we wanted to include here as much as possible - since, in our opinion, listening to these 38 minutes with Elliot is a gift (and one that sure beats the price of film school). Integrity in (wry) storytelling. That’s what it’s all about. Sarah Ruhl's new play Stage Kiss follows the antics of two actors who renew an old romance when they appear together in an antique drama from the 1930s. Jessica Hecht and Dominic Fumusa star in the production, which is directed by Rebecca Taichman for Playwrights Horizons. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood tells us the consequences of what happens when actors fall back in love — and life begins to imitate art.
Jessica Hecht, now on Broadway as Eddie Carbone's long-suffering but cleared-eyed wife Beatrice in the Broadway revival of "A View From The Bridge", talks about her role in the play's tragic love triangle and why her preparation for this performance was so different than her usual practice. She also discusses how she began studying at Connecticut College, only to have the famed actor Morris Carnovsky send her off to New York to study at New York University; her earliest roles, including an appearance in "Hamlet" at Hartford Stage, near her hometown of Bloomfield CT, as a silent lady-in-waiting to Pamela Payton-Wright as Gertrude; her Broadway debut in "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" where, after being raised in an observant Jewish home, she appeared as part of a Southern family disconnected from their Jewish roots; how she handled portraying a character alternating between dawning love and heart-rending tragedy in the non-linear "Stop Kiss"; working on "After The Fall" at the Roundabout with Arthur Miller and her interaction with the legendary playwright; playing in Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" with Denzel Washington -- and how that yielded the greatest entrance ovation she's ever experienced; the joy and pain of opening in "Brighton Beach Memoirs" but never being able to perform for an audience in the prematurely closed "Broadway Bound"; and why she's drawn back to the Williamstown Theatre Festival year after year. Original air date - March 17, 2010.
