Some mothers of students at Goulds Elementary are upset over an incident that occurred on a bus ride to school. It left some kids injured and upset, and they're blaming the bus driver. We spoke with Crystal Budden, a mom of two kids who attend Goulds Elementary.
In todays episode, Tatiana interiews Dawn Whitten who is a naturopath, herbalist, researcher, teacher and mentor on Bundjalung country in Northern NSW. She is one of the co-owners of Gould's pharmacy for the past 18 years and has a well grounded approach to blending the academic realms with the traditional practices. In this episode, Dawn shares some of her journey with Goulds, and what led her to want to become a lactation expert and assist families in pregnancy and postpartum. She shares her journey of writing her thesis on herb-drug interactions and also shares her perspective about science and tradition not being so different from one another. We discuss hopes and dreams for the future of herbal education in Australia and also discuss the important of herbalists knowing where their medicine comes from. There is also a strong emphasis on using fresh vital herb material in herbal preparations and some of the potential pitfalls of commercially manufactured tablets and capsules. Dawn really blends together the academic realms of herbal medicine with a down to Earth approach and a deep knowing of the plants. It is wonderful to have people on the show with such a balanced perspective and wisdom to offer. In today's episode, I interview Dr. Jason Hawrelak who is a naturopath, herbalist, and nutritionist on Bundjalung country, and is one of the leading experts in the treatment of gastrointestinal conditions with natural medicines. He has nearly 20 years of clinical experience and a deep passion for gastrointestinal health and the gastrointestinal microbiota. I met Jason at the beginning of this year at Marleen Herbs in Tasmania, with some other incredible inspirational herb folk who have been interviewed on this podcast like Greg Whitten, Sue Evans, and Nena Alaschewski, as well as Jason's partner Dawn Whitten, who I will be interviewing soon. Marleen herbs is run by Ronald, Marleen and Emma van de Winckel, who welcomed us all into their home and showed us their amazing farm which grows and makes all of the fresh plant tinctures for PPC herbs which are the only commercial suppliers of fresh plant tinctures in Australia. It really was a great way to start off 2024, and I felt humbled and honoured to have the opportunity to spend time with these incredible people who have all had a big influence and impact on the Australian herbal medicine community and natural health industry. Jason purchased Goulds in Tasmania 17 years ago with Dawn, Greg, and their friends Belinda and Daniel Robson. Jason shares how he was inspired by his time working at Mullum herbals, to create a clinic in Hobart which offered over the counter consultations for low income earners. In this interview Jason also shares his journey of becoming a practitioner and specializing in gastrointestinal health and the human microbiota, and how healing his own chronic health conditions with natural medicine spurred him to want to help others. Jason shares some of his preferred herbs that he uses in his practice, particularly for gut health and microbiome issues. He highlights the selectivity of certain herbs, such as pomegranate, garlic, Nigella sativa, and Bical skullcap, in targeting pathogenic bacteria while leaving beneficial ones intact. In this episode Jason shares some great practical advise on how our listeners can take better care of our microbiome and finishes with some great wisdom about custodianship of our bodies. ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast
Welcome to Season 13, Episode 21, of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week's episode may not be suitable for your children, so please use discretion before letting them watch/listen. When he was 11 years old, Stevie Gould knew what he wanted from tennis: a Blue Chip rating, direct entry into the biggest junior tournaments, a prestigious college tennis scholarship, and a real shot at the professional tour. Stevie did reach his goals of playing Kalamazoo and qualifying events for professional tournaments. He played Division I tennis at the University of Washington for one year before transferring to the University of San Francisco until he graduated with a psychology degree. In the Fall of 2024, Stevie will complete his college tennis eligibility with a year at Saint Mary's College as he pursues a Master's Degree. Stevie's parents - as well as others in the local tennis community - followed his lead and became part of the Burgos Tennis Program. The Goulds were providing their only child with what they thought was a coaching situation that would help Stevie reach his goals while keeping the fun alive for him. They could have never imagined what was truly going on with their son and his coach. As Stevie explains, sexual predators are professionals. They study their prey. They calculate the best way to get what they want. And they are willing to spend months - if not years - grooming their victims. In Stevie's case, he had a coach who seemed to be able to provide everything Stevie needed to become the best tennis player possible. The coach seemed to know what it would take for Stevie to reach his goals as well as the skills to help him along the way. For several months, Stevie's parents - like the other parents in their California community - would drive him to practices, stay and watch, and slowly build a trusting relationship with this man who would be guiding their son. All the parents did their research. All the parents thought they knew who this man truly was. Sadly, they never could have imagined who the coach turned out to be. If there's a takeaway from this episode, it is this: Parents, follow the Goulds' lead and do your due diligence before hiring a coach for your child. Talk to your child about proper and improper touch, acceptable behaviors between a child and adult, and what to do if a trusted adult crosses the line. Keep the lines of communication open with your child so that they feel comfortable coming to you if anything seems or is not as it should be. Then, hope against hope that it works and your child never has to experience what Stevie went through from age 11 to almost 16. Getting a royal turkey slam in a hunting career is a great accomplsihment for any dedicated turkey hunter. Doing it in one season is amazing. Just the logistics alone can be daunting. But to be able to travel from Florida, North Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Mexico and get a bird in the same season is a feat few have accomplished. Pat Newcomb is the designer and developer of Nukem Grab and Go hunting Blinds, accomplished this remarkable feat last season and he is here to share how he did it and what it took to get it done. Greetings everyone from Lutriwita AKA Tasmania. I am down here on an incredible herbal adventure- of which one of the main goals and pivitol points of the trip was to go to Goulds farm and meet Greg Whitten. I have wanted to meet Greg ever since I purchased his massive book "Herbal Harvest" 13 years ago (it was released 25 years ago). I have never come across anything like this book and it really inspired, motivated and educated me. It came at a time when I was running an essential oil company, preparing to enroll in uni, was feeling disgruntled at the lack of herbal medicine education opportunities, and was hungry for a herbal teacher to teach me in person. Since that day I first opened the book I have vowed to go and meet him. So here I am on this beautiful island which seems to be the perfect land for propagating temperate climate herbs and therefore propagating wise herbal elders such as Greg.Greg has had over 35 years of experience in growing high quality herbs and has been operating his current farm since 1995 where he grows around 80 species of medicinal plants. Greg co-owns Goulds which is a business that has been around Hobart since 1880 and it first started out as a pharmacy- back when pharmacies were mostly herbs anyway. Greg purchased Goulds 17 years ago with his daughter Dawn Whitten, her partner Jason Hawrelack and their friends Belinda and Daniel Robson, with Greg managing the farm and medicine making facilities, and the others managing the clinic and apothecary in Hobart.Goulds is the only example in Australia of multi practitioner clinic and apothecary, which grows and makes a large portion of its medicines. The Goulds farm is organic and biodynamic and one of the things which makes it really special is that they still do everything on the farm by hand without machinery. Greg has quite an inventor streak and loves to create or re-invent innovative tools for weeding, growing, harvesting and making herbal medicine. If you look on my Alchemilla Herbals facebook page you will find photos of my tour of his farm and medicine making area.Greg is such a humble and wise elder and one of the many things that I really appreciate about him is that he is so forthcoming with his knowledge- he doesn't have any of that edgy industry mindset, doesn't harbor any trade secrets and also recognises that as he prepares for retirement, the knowledge must be in the hands of the next generation. I hope that you enjoy this interview where we discuss his book herbal harvest which took 5 years to write on a typewriter. We also discuss the internship program which used to run at Goulds. This is a topic that I am particularly interested because The Elder Tree will run internship programs. On this trip so far I met about 6 people who completed this program and it was great to hear about it from Greg and also hear a bit about what he calls the "Goulds Paradigm" , and his journey at Goulds and Green Pharm. There are some areas of the interview where we geek out a bit on ratios medicine making, and botanical names.

For the last 4 weeks, NRL360 and Newscorp have been crossing the line in their commentary of the opinion of Phil Gould. As he is a paid expert on a rival broadcaster, Newscorp are deliberately associating Goulds' opinion on all areas of the game with his job at The Bulldogs. They are stirring up trouble and ensuring clubs he talks about ( especially those clubs owned by Newscorp, i.e., The Broncos) are getting his message. I respond to the misrepresentation of comments made in response to Gould, which try to compare the Dogs rebuild with teams a decade more advanced in their current state. I also look at the pathetic promotion of Super Saturday, which appeared to go hand in hand with attacking Goulds comments on Latrell Mitchell. Considering News had many headlines saying Latrell went missing in last years prelim, it seems overly hypocritical. Check it out, and feel free to like and subscribe. Go The Dogs!

Principal photography began in August 2022 and was wrapped up within two weeks on September 2, 2022.
Steven W. Beattie hosts a conversation with consummate storyteller and bestselling novelist Wayne Johnston. His latest, Jennie's Boy, reaches back into his past to bring us a sad, tender and at times extremely funny memoir of his Newfoundland boyhood. "Wayne Johnston's childhood in Newfoundland was full of laughter, pain and poverty. And then laughter again. His memoir, Jennie's Boy, is an uplifting account of a childhood not just survived—he came close to death too many times to count—but triumphed over. Thank god he lived to tell the tale." — Rick Mercer For six months between 1966 and 1967, Wayne Johnston and his family lived in a wreck of a house across from his grandparents in Goulds, Newfoundland. At seven, Wayne was sickly and skinny, unable to keep food down, plagued with insomnia and a relentless cough that no doctor could diagnose, though they had already removed his tonsils, adenoids and appendix. To the neighbours, he was known as “Jennie's boy,” a backhanded salute to his tiny, ferocious mother, who felt judged for Wayne's condition at the same time as worried he might never grow up. Jennie's Boy is Wayne's tribute to a family and a community that were simultaneously fiercely protective of him and fed up with having to make allowances for him. His boyhood was full of pain, yes, but also tenderness and Newfoundland wit. By that wit, and through love—often expressed in the most unloving ways—Wayne survived. Writer Wayne Johnston tells us about his latest book, a memoir of part of his time growing up in the Goulds, called Jennie's Boy: A Newfoundland Childhood.

WILDLIFE IN FOCUS Common Name: Gouldian Finch Scientific Name: Erytrura gouldiae Named after renowned British ornothological artist John Gould. This next bird is one of the prettiest Australian birds but it is endangered. It’s very small and would fit into your hand weighing only 14 grams. As with most birds of this type (finches, the Gouldian) it’s a quiet enough bird that peeps and sings a little. They make a pleasant sound that is doubtful to wake you up or create a problem with neighbours, though it is persistent. I'm talking with Dr Holly Parsons of www.birdsinbackyards.net.au Let’s find out about it. Gouldian finch are also known as Goulds, Lady Gouldian and rainbow finch in other parts of the world are Holly’s opinion, one of the most beautiful birds in Australia. Most one known as a pet for aviaries. Beautifully coloured birds with a green back, purple chest and yellow side feathers, but 25% of the population has a red face, 74% have a black face and about 1% have a yellow face. Young birds are surprisingly dull brown coloured and become vibrantly coloured as they mature. In the wild they are found along creek lines, and mangroves. Partially migratory, and usually quiet. Outside the breeding season, they move closer to the coast, but once breeding starts they move inland. They nest in hollows in trees and termite mounds. DYSTOPIAN: A NOVEL by Gianina Sipitca Dystopian, is a continuation to Fiction of Not, This Is What I Got…. The novel in which a Thought Reading Machine linked to the DNA of the Anchor means Complete Loss of Privacy yet can help protect those whose spirit and body are taken over by Goulds. In Fiction Or Not, This Is What I Got (The Big Thought Reading Machine) a jealousy driven first lady Hillary Obama, paranoid presidential hopeful Michelle Clinton, met playboy billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov in modern day America, SciFi novel about fictional character The Tsarina, with an IQ of 7000, who was told that she was a messenger of God and had to marry her husband to be, the real life billionaire. She had subliminal conversations about how to save the world one person at a time, from the Goulds, Leprosy and the complete loss of privacy with evil politicians and superior minded business moguls. The Fiction Or Not…novel started with an introspect look at her life, by Dulkinna, the main character, who, while working on an autobiographic novel, and periodically writing poems in her notebook, reminisced about her first becoming acutely aware about the fact that she really, really was the center of everybody's attention. https://www.amazon.com/Dystopian-novel-Gianina-Sipitca/dp/1796040479/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&qid=1585230205&refinements=p_27%3AGianina+Sipitca&s=books&sr=1-1&text=Gianina+Sipitca https://www.amazon.com/Lessons-New-Generation-Gianina-Sipitca/dp/1796074896/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&qid=1585230275&refinements=p_27%3AGianina+Sipitca&s=books&sr=1-2&text=Gianina+Sipitca www.mypoetrymylife.com http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/gsipitca.mp3

If you’ve been to Wembley or White Hart Lane, you’ll have almost certainly heard the word, “Yid” chanted in support of Tottenham. You may have even chanted it yourself as a Spurs fan. But what does it mean exactly? Do you think it still has a place on football’s terraces? Campaigner Ivor Baddiel and his brother David began a campaign seven years ago with a short film, “!The Y Word” which explained that it’s a derogatory word for Jewish people – similar to using the P Word or N Word. The Baddiel brothers wanted to start a debate and Jonny caught up with Ivor.

In The Past Lane - The Podcast About History and Why It Matters
This week at In The Past Lane, the history podcast, I take a deep dive into the origins of Labor Day. It's a holiday that most Americans these days take for granted. But it was born out of the crisis of the Gilded Age, that tumultuous last third of the 19th century that saw both the US economy boom as never before and social upheaval take place on an unprecedented level. This unique holiday was first celebrated on September 5, 1882. On that day thousands of workers in New York City risked getting fired for taking an unauthorized day off to participate in festivities honoring honest toil and the rights of labor. This first commemoration of Labor Day testified to labor’s rising power and unity in the Gilded Age as well as its sense that both were necessary to withstand the growing power of business and industry. The Labor Day holiday originated with the Central Labor Union (CLU), a local labor federation – essentially a union of unions - formed in NYC in January 1882 to promote the interests of workers. The CLU immediately became a formidable force in New York, staging protest rallies, lobbying state legislators, and organizing strikes and boycotts. By August 1882 membership in the organization boomed to fifty-six unions representing 80,000 workers. But CLU activists wanted to do more than simply increase membership and win strikes. They wanted to build worker solidarity in the face of jarring changes being wrought by the industrial revolution in the Gilded Age – the period in American history covering roughly the last 3rd of the 19th century. During this period the United States was transformed from what today we’d call a “developing nation” in 1865 to the world’s leading economic power by 1900. The favorite word of politicians and business leaders in this era was “progress.” But along with this tremendous increase in national wealth came a problem: widespread poverty. Evidence of this troubling duality could be found everywhere, but especially in New York City where mansions of big business tycoons like Vanderbilt, Morgan, and Carnegie arose along Fifth Avenue, while in the rest of the city two-thirds of the population lived in cramped and squalid tenements. In short, the establishment of Labor Day signaled that Gilded Age America faced a crisis over growing inequality. The motivation to establish Labor Day also came from a growing sense of alarm among American workers over the growing power of employers over their employees and frustration over the unwillingness of political leaders to do anything about it. Employers were free to increase hours, slash wages, and fire workers at will – practices that rendered workers powerless and pushed more and more of them into poverty. These developments, noted labor leaders, called into question the future of the American republic. As the CLU put it in its constitution: “Economical servitude degrades political liberties to a farce. Men who are bound to follow the dictates of factory lords, that they may earn a livelihood, are not free. … [A]s the power of combined and centralized capital increases, the political liberties of the toiling masses become more and more illusory.” In other words, workers in the Gilded Age began to argue that in this new world of industry – one that was so very different from the agrarian world of the Founders - mere political equality (one man, one vote) was no longer adequate to maintain a healthy republican society. Modern industrial life, with huge corporations, global markets, and increasing numbers of people working for wages, required a recognition that republican citizenship included an economic dimension – not just a political one. As the reformer and labor activist Henry George wrote in 1879, “In our time…creep on the insidious forces that, producing inequality, destroy Liberty.” The fact that all male citizens possessed the vote and equality before the law, George continued, no longer guaranteed them the blessings of republican citizenship. If one was forced to work 60 or 80 hours a weeks and yet did not earn a living wage, his right to vote was meaningless. He had sunken into what workers in that er called, “industrial slavery.” Extreme inequality, in other words, would destroy American democracy. So these were the concerns that in 1882 prompted labor activists affiliated with New York’s CLU to establish Labor Day as a day that would celebrate workers and inspire them to reclaim their dissipating rights. As John Swinton, editor of the city’s only labor paper wrote, “Whatever enlarges labor’s sense of its power hastens the day of its emancipation.” Now, we should pause here to note that the precise identity of the CLU leader who in May 1882 first proposed the idea of establishing Labor Day remains a mystery. Some accounts say it was Peter “P. J.” McGuire, General Secretary of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners (and future co-founder of the AFL), who proposed the idea. Others argue that it was another man with a similar last name, machinist Matthew Maguire. Well, we’ll probably never know the answer to which Maguire deserves the title of the “Father of Labor Day,” but it is clear that both men played key roles in promoting and organizing the original holiday. And so it was that after months of preparation the chosen day – Tuesday September 5, 1882 – finally arrived. Optimism among the organizers ran high, but no one knew how many workers would turn out. Few could expect their employers to grant them a day off and many feared getting fired and blacklisted for labor union activity. When William G. McCabe, the parade’s first Grand Marshall and popular member of the International Typographers Union, arrived an hour before the parade’s start, the situation looked grim. Only a few dozen workers stood milling about City Hall Park in lower Manhattan. But to the relief of McCabe and other organizers, by the time the parade touched off at 10:00 a.m., about 400 men and a brass band had assembled. In the early going, the small group of marchers faced ridicule from bystanders and interruptions in the line of march because policemen refused to stop traffic at intersections. But as the parade continued north up Broadway, it swelled in size as union after union fell into line from side streets. Soon the jeers turned into cheers as the spectacle of labor solidarity grew more impressive. Marchers held aloft signs that spoke both to their pride as workers and the fear that they were losing political power and economic standing in the republic: To the Workers Should Belong All Wealth Labor Built this Republic. Labor Shall Rule It Less Work and More Pay Eight Hours for a Legal Day’s Work All Men Are Created Equal Many workers wore their traditional work uniforms and aprons and walked behind wagons displaying their handiwork. Others dressed in their holiday best for the occasion. Midway through the parade, the throng of workers – now numbering 5,000 -- passed a reviewing stand at Union Square. Among the many dignitaries was Terence Powderly, Grand Master Workman of the Knights of Labor, the most powerful labor organization in the nation. It then continued up Fifth Avenue, past the opulent mansions of the new super rich of the era – the Vanderbilts, Morgans, Goulds and so on, before ending at 42nd Street and Sixth Ave. From there participants headed to a large park on Manhattan’s Upper west Side for a massive picnic. By late afternoon some 25,000 workers and their families jammed the park to participate in the festivities which consisted of live music, stirring speeches on workers’ rights, and consumption of copious amounts of food and beer. Thrilled with the success of this first effort, CLU leaders staged a second Labor Day the following year in 1883 and the event drew an even larger number of participants. The next year, in 1884, the CLU officially designated the first Monday in September as the annual Labor Day, calling upon workers to, “Leave your benches, leave your shops, join in the parade and attend the picnic. A day spent with us is not lost.” Upwards of 20,000 marched that year, including a contingent of African American workers (the first women marchers appeared in 1885). With such an impressive start, the tradition of an annual Labor Day holiday quickly gained popularity across the country. By 1886 Labor Day had become a national event. Some 20,000 workers marched in Manhattan, and another 10,000 in Brooklyn, while 25,000 turned out in Chicago, 15,000 in Boston, 5,000 in Buffalo, and 4,000 in Washington, D.C. Politicians took notice and in 1887 five states, including New York, passed laws making Labor Day a state holiday. Seven years later – just a dozen years after the first celebration in New York — President Grover Cleveland signed into law a measure establishing Labor Day as a holiday for all federal workers. Labor Day caught on so quickly among Gilded Age workers because unlike the traditional forms of labor activism like striking and picketing, or civic holidays commemorating victories in war, Labor Day drew together workers for the purposes of celebration. As P. J. McGuire later wrote of the parade, “No festival of martial glory of warrior’s renown is this; no pageant pomp of warlike conquest … attend this day. … It is dedicated to Peace, Civilization and the triumphs of Industry. It is a demonstration of fraternity and the harbinger of a better age – a more chivalrous time, when labor shall be best honored and well rewarded.” In the twentieth century, Labor Day parades grew into massive spectacles of pride and power. These annual events reflected the growing power and influence of organized labor in American society. The labor movement and social reformers pushed for policies aimed at limiting the power of big corporations and the wealthy, while protecting and enhancing the opportunity for the average citizen to live a decent life. These policies included the 8-hour day, increased workplace safety, collective bargaining rights, expanded public education, unemployment insurance, and Social Security. Their success reflected a growing acceptance of the idea that for republican citizenship to be real, it had to include a baseline of material wellbeing. By the 1930s, President Franklin D. Roosevelt enshrined “Freedom from Want” as one of the nation’s essential Four Freedoms. “True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence,” he said. “People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.” Roosevelt’s New Deal and subsequent moments of reform like President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “War on Poverty,” boosted the wellbeing of the average American. So, too, did the influence of a strong labor movement. Labor’s power was on full display on Labor Day in 1961 when 200,000 workers processed up Fifth Avenue behind Grand Marshall Mayor Robert Wagner, passing on the reviewing stand dignitaries that included Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Senator Jacob K. Javitts, and former President Harry S. Truman. The result of reforms and strong unions was the steady decline of extreme wealth inequality. Whereas in 1890 the top 1 percent of Americans owned 51 percent of all wealth, by 1979 the 1 percent owned 20.5% of all wealth. But since 1980 the trend has shifted dramatically back toward increased wealth and income inequality. This trend has many sources, including deindustrialization, cuts to social programs, and the deregulation of Wall Street. But a key one has been the decline of the power of organized labor. In 1955 union membership reached its historic highpoint with 39% of the American workforce belonging to a union. Today, union membership hovers around 10 percent. And wealth inequality? In 1979, as we just noted, the share of wealth possessed by the 1 percent had fallen to about 21%. Today, it’s closing in on 40% -- and rising. This trend explains why so many Americans have taken to calling this era, the Second Gilded Age. So this weekend, as millions celebrate Labor Day by not laboring, Americans would do well to reflect on the core claims of the early labor movement that invented Labor Day: Gilded Age workers and those who followed them argued that the nation’s democratic values and republican institutions were threatened by economic policies that left a small number of people extremely wealthy and powerful, while the great majority of citizens struggled to obtain or hold onto a piece of the American Dream. Today, this concern animates calls for a $15 minimum wage, single payer health care, tougher regulations on corporations, banks, and Wall Street, and greater investment in infrastructure and public education. So, Labor Day should remind us that while, to paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, all are created equal, they also grow up to live in a society shaped by policies and laws that determine whether opportunities for success are focused on the great majority of citizens, or merely on the 1 percent. Happy Labor Day, people. Recommended reading: Edward T. O’Donnell, Henry George and the Crisis of Inequality: Progress and Poverty in the Gilded Age (Columbia Univ.
