We had the pleasure of interviewing Fastball over Zoom video!Formed in 1994 in Austin, Texas, Fastball combined a fondness for melodic, Beatles-inspired pop with the alternative aesthetic of late-'90s mainstream rock. Guitarist/vocalist Miles Zuniga, bassist/vocalist Tony Scalzo, and drummer Joey Shuffield — all veterans of Austin's underground rock scene — originally banded together under the name Magneto U.S.A. After signing with Hollywood Records, the musicians changed their name to Fastball and released their debut album, Make Your Mama Proud, in 1996. The album demonstrated the band's synthesis of modern flavor and bygone pop hooks, a combination that would later launch Fastball into the mainstream. The follow-up effort, All the Pain Money Can Buy, appeared in early 1998, featuring a considerably tighter band and more pop flourishes. Although the bandmates were still working side jobs at the time of its release, lead-off single "The Way" proved to be a meteoric hit, topping the American rock charts for seven weeks while enjoying crossover success as a pop single. "Fire Escape" and the piano-fueled "Out of My Head" did similarly well, and All the Pain Money Can Buy went platinum within six months of its release, earning two Grammy nominations along the way. Fastball celebrated their success with a considerable amount of touring, including shows alongside Marcy Playground and Everclear. The Harsh Light of Day arrived in fall 2000, featuring piano work by Billy Preston and an increasingly arty sound, including the Top 40 hit "You're an Ocean.” Fastball eventually left the Hollywood roster in favor of a new deal with Rykodisc. A retrospective compilation, Painting the Corners: The Best of Fastball, marked the band's final release for Hollywood Records in 2002. Two years later, they resurfaced with Keep Your Wig On, having fully embraced their power pop roots with the help of co-producer Adam Schlesinger. The album strengthened Fastball's work ethic, with frontmen Zuniga and Scalzo writing together for the first time. That collaborative spirit helped fuel another album, Little White Lies, which appeared in 2009 to warm reviews. After several years of focusing on live work, Fastball returned to the studio in 2015, recording in their hometown of Austin. The project emerged in May 2017, a self-released album titled Step into Light, and the band supported it with an extensive tour of the United States and Canada. The following year, Fastball celebrated the 20th anniversary of All the Pain Money Can Buy with an expanded edition of the 1998 album; they accompanied the reissue with a hometown concert in Austin, Texas. In October 2019, Fastball returned with The Help Machine, an album produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, and in Sept 2021 and on June 17, 2022 they released The Deep End.Fastball just released a brand new album called Sonic Ranch. We want to hear from you! Today, the guys discuss their top 5 episodes of the classic sitcom ‘Friends'. But they switch things up by doing the medical topic first by discussing Ketamine and its role in Matthew Perry's death (3:53). Ali starts out by asking Asif about how exactly ketamine was involved in Matthew Perry's drowning death. Asif then goes over the history of ketamine, how it works and how it is mainly used as anesthesia. Ali then asks him about how it has been increasingly used in depression and Asif goes over the scientific evidence for this (after a brief digression about electroconvulsive therapy). They then discuss the abuse potential of ketamine and the side effects. They then discuss a New York Times article from last discussing ketamine abuse, telemedicine and compounding pharmacies. They then wrap up the section by discussing the individuals arrested for providing the ketamine implicated in Matthew Perry's death. Then in the second, more lighthearted half, the guys each list their top 5 ‘Friends' episodes (31:43). In this episode of the Beginner Photography Podcast, I chat with Justin Tedford, an insightful photographer specializing in capturing the essence of old, abandoned structures. Today Justin shares his journey of putting together a self-published photo book, exploring the challenges of curating and arranging photos, and taking a photo roadtrip. He also dives into the significance of intention and connection with your subject matter. The Big Ideas:Embrace Emotional Connection: Engage deeply with your subject to capture photos that evoke emotions and tell a story.Value Quality over Quantity: Spend time refining your shots instead of focusing on producing a large number of images.Adaptability is Key: Be flexible and adjust your techniques based on the environment and light conditions you encounter.Curate Thoughtfully: Select and arrange your photos carefully to create a cohesive and compelling visual narrative.Photography Action Plan:Experiment with Light: Shoot during different times of the day to see how light affects your images. Use natural light and reflectors to fill in shadows for better composition.Curate Your Portfolio: Start by organizing your best photos into a digital portfolio. Arrange them thoughtfully to tell a coherent story or showcase varied styles.Slow Down Your Process: Spend more time on each shot, focusing on framing and composition. Analyze your photos on-site to identify and correct any issues immediately.Capture Emotion: Select subjects that evoke a strong emotional response in you. Aim to tell a story through your images rather than just capturing a scene.Engage with the Community: Join photography groups like the Beginner Photography Podcast Community to exchange tips and get feedback. Seth Zosky is a massive fan of Kanye West. He owns the shoes, has heard all his songs, and—as a drummer—dove deep into Kanye's innovative use of the retro 808 drum machine. So when Kanye started coming out as an unhinged antisemite in 2023, making ridiculous comments on podcasts and social media about Hitler, spouting conspirary theories and tweeting about going "death con 3 on Jewish people", Zosky was heartbroken. He decided to transform his emotions into a new production. Working with his close friend, the rapper CJ Capital (who is not Jewish, but also a major Kanye fan), as well as Dan Petrenko and Tracey Erin Smith, both of whom are Jewish theatre creators in the Prairie provinces, Zosky spent a year developing a new play. Pain to Power: A Kanye West Musical Protest debuts at the Winnipeg Jewish Theatre on Mar. 9, about a month after Kanye's latest album, Vultures 1, which was just released this week. Pain to Power adopts Kanye's music and reclaims it into a work of art that Zosky believes the multimillionaire rapper would absolutely hate. He and Petrenko, the artistic director of the Winnipeg Jewish Theatre, join Culturally Jewish to discuss the origins of the show and their artistic process—which included a trip to Israel in early October 2023 that ended up being cut short when they got caught in Hamas's terrorist attack, hearing missiles exploding over their heads from inside Ben Gurion airport, moments before they caught the last flight out on Oct. 7. Credits Culturally Jewish is hosted by Ilana Zackon and David Sklar. Our producer is Michael Fraiman, and our theme music is by Sarah Segal-Lazar. We're a member of The CJN Podcast Network. Guess who's back in Sunnydale? It's Harmony! Oh, and Spike is there too. Looking for some gem … thing … it's not important. What matters is that Harmony is back, she's got fangs and France pangs. She'll stop at nothing to get what she desires. But while Spike fixates on the Slayer, Buffy fixates on her new crush: Parker Abrams, grade A dick—and not in the good way. Hear us discuss… We love the new, mature girl talk! Buffy doing the walk of shame! You go, girl. Xander and Anya are doing … something. Once again Xander is FAR FROM the worst dude in this episode! Ok but is it seriously 5 miles to campus? Trigger warnings Domestic abuse, gaslighting, misogyny, violence against women

It hasn’t always been easy for Fastball. Some night, weeks and even years, playing rock and roll music can feel futile, especially when it’s not clear when the next show might be. But neither Tony Scalzo nor Miles Zuniga hesitate for a second when asked if they’re doing exactly what the should be. And while the future of the Austin band hasn’t always felt certain, the group has remained remarkably consistent. Now in their 25th year, Scalzo, Zuniga and drummer are clearly in it for the long haul, making the most out a lifelong career. The group broke quickly, a mere three years into its existence, when their sophomore album, All the Pain Money Can Buy yielding alternative rock staples like “The Way” and “Out of My Head.” 2000’s fittingly titled followup The Harsh Light of Day marked the end of their radio career, but the beginning of a growth as a band, building up a loyal following. In 2019, the group released its seventh LP, The Help Machine

As of 2017, there were roughly 7,000 people living without homes in San Francisco, a number that comprises minors — a lot of them. The San Francisco Unified School District estimates that as of 2017, roughly 2,100 of the children in the school system were homeless — a number that it said looked to be escalating, not shrinking.

PhD student, author, and Mr. Pointy Award winner Stephanie Graves makes her debut on the podcast with a discussion of Buffy’s transition from the innocent days of high school to the bleak promise years of college. In 401, “The Freshman,” Willow opens herself to the thrusting, spurty knowledge of UC Sunnydale while Buffy makes what will prove to be one of the darkest, most brutal quips of foreshadowing possibly in the history of the series. 402, “Living Conditions” gives us...not a whole lot, actually. And in 402, “The Harsh Light of Day,” Giles has a TV! He’s shallow like us! Also, Blondie Bear is back and can’t wait to see if he freckles; Xander isn’t awful; Riley isn’t awful either; but Parker is manipulative and shallow...and why doesn’t he want me? Next: Melanie Scala is back for a three-peat appearance in the coveted guest host slot, this time discussing 404, “Fear, Itself,” 405, “Beer Bad,” and 406, “Wild at Heart.” THE CROSSOVER Angel 101, "City of..." and 103, "In the Dark" THE BREAKDOWN Intro / Guest (00:00:00 - 00:08:05) Main Topic (00:08:05 - 01:41:42) Outro / Next (01:41:42 - 01:45:07) THE LIBRARY Library Closed For Filing - Please Come Back Tomorrow THE MUSIC “Conversations (feat. Natalie and Katey might make you uncomfortable with their disagreement on the Parker situation. Weigh in if you want by emailing us at getslayedpodcast@gmail.com. If there's any weird jumps in this episode, it's because Katey and Natalie were recording as election results came in, but didn't want to discuss on air. Just roll with it.
The lovely and delightful Vickie Navarra joins me to discuss the rhetorical proficiency of evil, that dream sequence, and all the various graduations and ascensions that take place in the final episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s third season. Buffy is done with the Watchers Council; Oz panics with Willow; Anya feels barfy with Xander; Angel and Cordelia graduate to their own series; and the Mutant Enemy wears a mortarboard. Also sex scenes, amirite? Next: I’m joined by...a guest...to discuss episodes 401, “The Freshman,” 402, “Living Conditions,” and 403, “The Harsh Light of Day.” THE BREAKDOWN Intro / Guest (00:00:00 - 00:09:00) Main Topic (00:09:00 - 01:39:59) Outro / Next (01:39:59 - 01:46:10) THE LIBRARY Reading Joss Whedon (Television and Popular Culture), edited by Rhonda V. Buffy is a place of negotiation for experiencing and expressing emotions and this ep does a great job of manipulating them. Is Harmony/Spike like a divorced older man with a younger woman? Should Giles have died at the end of Season 3? Is Parker a poorly made John Cusack clone?
Well hey there, friends! Season 4 episode 3 of Buffy is here and full of love, loss, and frat party PSAs. Xander is back with some real screen time and maybe a new girlfriend? We aren't exactly sure yet. But Spike is also here so who cares about all that other junk. Thanks for listening!
Chelsea and Bob explore and episode that has some tough scenes for Buff, but reintroduces some all time great characters.
This week, Anya’s back! She's got some questions for Xander to DTR, and Spike is back with a new R and a new plan to get outside during the day. His scheme follows Oz to LA where Angel must confront just how much power he wants to wield.

David and Michaela talk about Buffy's fourth season episode "The Harsh Light of Day". Harmony's back in a big way, and brings with her a whole slew of interesting fashion tidbits to delight and distract our hosts. We'll also get to see a lot of Spike's stunt double, and get a bit of Angel cross-over action happening. And what's this? Perhaps we'll even get our first taste of Double Weerwolf, a situation foretold all the way back in the latter half of season two. Wow, what a wild ride it's been. So, two people from Buffy's past are back- Spike and (gasp) Harmony! They are looking for something, another MacGuffin, but this time, it makes Vampires invincible? Hard to see why this wasn't a priority for all the others who crawled around Sunnydale. I mean, I get it, they hadn't thought of it yet. Also Harmony is just as bad as an undead mean girl.Spike is not himself, though, and seems more abusive than entertaining. There's a showdown in broad daylight, and Buffy manages to snag the ring. And for once, I agree with her plan. So Oz makes a road trip to LA and drops off the prize, but Spike is following, where we finally get the sarcastic shit-disturber we love. There's some torture and a band van coup, and the torturer turns out to be the one we need to defeat this time. And Angel decides that brooding is more important than doing his job well.
Spike returns to fuck up the Scooby gang's shit as he searches for an amulet that will make him the most powerful vampire in the world. Unfortunately, he will be the most powerful vampire with the most obnoxious girlfriend. Warning: this episode features our newest punching bag: Harmony.
misogyny: the episode! what a fun time to be a woman in sunnydale.
We're closing in on the end of the story of the Italian unification. Through both force of arms and cunning, Piedmont has conquered almost all of Italy - from the perspective of grand, heroic history, we've already passed the climax and we’re just tying up loose ends. But that’s not how I feel about it - because we're about to leave the heady days of high hopes and dreams for the future into the murky realm of mistakes, and of what might have been.
This week we're chatting about the first real Buffy/Angel crossover ep, "The Harsh Light of Day." Spike is back in Sunnydale, Parker the Human Dumpster Fire shows his true colors, and Harmony is just delightful.
Spike has returned to Sunnydale and brought his new, barely tolerable girlfriend, Harmony, along for the ride. Shut up Parker.
Spike is here and we're super excited about that! But, like, he's a total dick.
College life is taking a toll on Buffy, and it ain't just the books. After an emotionally challenging one-night romance, Buffy finds herself in a vulnerable position just as Harmony rolls back into town with her new boyfriend. But who would date Harmony? Spike! ...Spike? Really? Powered with a ring that allows him to fight in the daylight, can Buffy hold off the troublesome vamp while facing her own troubles? Love is in the air in The Harsh Light Of Day and the Scoobies are breathing deep. It seems everyone has a new sweetie. Xander has Anya. Buffy has Parker... briefly. And Harmony has Spike? The old nemesis is back and he's looking for the Gem of Amarra, which will turn him invincible. Kristen and Mike discuss the different types of heartbreak and abuse in the episode, and draw parallels between Angelus and Parker. Happy Halloween! In Fear Itself, the Scoobies attend a haunted fraternity house party that turns out to be actually haunted. As the gang roams the halls, their deepest fears become true. Buffy is all alone, no one sees Xander, Oz can't control his wolf side, and Willow's magic backfires. Kristen and Mike examine the gang's fears, and Kristen needlessly explains Oz's "God" costume and ensuing puns.
We welcome back podcast super-fan Peter Dunn as we also welcome back fan-favourite Spike to Buffy in the "Harsh Light of Day"! This extra-long podcast is spent talking about the three relationships of the episode, Spike & Harmony, Anya & Xander, and Buffy & Parker, with a little bit of Gem of Amara on the side.
