In today's episode, I spoke with Louise Hawkley about loneliness. We spoke about the paradox of feeling lonely even when surrounded by people, why loneliness is so painful to us on a visceral level, and how we are hardwired for social connection.Louise's work has shown the significant consequences that loneliness can have on our mental health and our physical health. Loneliness can completely distort the way we see the world, and it can have serious physiological, hormonal, and genetic effects. We also discussed some of the drivers of loneliness in our modern world - such as social media and changing family dynamics - and finally, what we can do about it. We shared practical ways to combat loneliness, overcome social anxiety, and cultivate more meaningful relationships. Tune in to learn more about loneliness and the ways in which we can build a more connected society. Prof. Louise Hawkley is a principal research scientist at NORC of the University of Chicago, and her research focuses on loneliness, its impacts on physical and mental health, with a special emphasis on the aging population. -- 00:00 Intro 01:02 What is loneliness? 04:33 Why is loneliness so painful? 06:00 Are we in a loneliness epidemic? 09:44 Mental health effects of chronic loneliness 14:45 Overcoming social anxiety 19:45 Loneliness causes diseases of inflammation 31:00 Cultivating relationships for life 34:28 Men and women suffer from different types of loneliness 39:14 Causes for the rise in loneliness - is social media to blame? 44:00 Authenticity is key for true belonging This is a public episode. Here is an important paper from Princeton in 2016: https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=142188 Meaning-making is a fundamental characteristic of thinking minds. Expose a person to a set of completely unrelated events and observe the complex ways in which human minds create connections, tell stories, and go beyond what is given to imbue chaos with order. We are concerned here with understanding the conditions under which one's tendency to search for meaning backfires and leads to conspiratorial thinking and superstitious beliefs. Decades of investigation into the processes involved in meaningmaking revealed that it is an automatically triggered (Kahneman, 2013), evolutionary adaptive (Foster & Kokko, 2009; Sherman, 2002), and developmentally dynamical (Tronick & Beeghly, 2011) feature of the cognitive system. It influences information processing fromperception (Heider & Simmel, 1944), to more complex mnemonic (Bartlett, 1932; Schacter, 2002) and decisional (Nickerson, 1998) processes. For themost part, this ability to make sense of a complexworld has positive consequences. It has been shown to result inmental and physical health benefits (Ownsworth & Nash, 2015), increased well-being (Cacioppo, Hawkley, Rickett, & Masi, 2005; Shek, 1992), emotion regulation (Ochsner, Silvers, & Buhle, 2012) and adjustment to trauma (Park, 2010). But the ability to search for meaning sometimes backfires. In an effort after meaning individuals falsely remember events that they haven't actually experienced (Clancy, 2005; Schacter, 2001), they preferentially process belief consistent information (Snyder & Swann, 1978) and engage in motivated reasoning as a way to maintain internal consistency (Kunda, 1990). One important way in which meaning search could backfire is when meaning is assigned to meaningless events. Recent research hints at the fact that the tendency to endorse conspiracy theories could be seen as an exaggeration of the processes involved in meaning search. Whitson and Galinsky (2008), for example, find that when people are made to feel uncertain or when they lack control over a situation they are more likely to endorse superstitious beliefs and conspiracy theories. Complementarily, affirming control has been found to result in reduced beliefs in conspiracy theories (Prooijen & Acker, 2015).We reasoned that: (1) one particular instance in which people are made to feel uncertain and might be motivated to reestablish control by engaging in search for meaning are situations involving social exclusion, and (2) this search for meaning might, in turn, make people particularly prone to endorse superstitious beliefs and conspiratorial thinking. Both premises are supported by previous research. Stillman et al. (2009), for instance, found that social exclusion is associated with feelings of meaninglessness. Fundraising FC was formed last year by a group of friends in the Petersfield area. As well as playing regular matches with other charity fundraising football clubs the team regularly like to get together for other fundraising events. Their latest fundraiser, which was inspired by BBC's CountryFile TV programme which organises annual ramble events for BBC's Children in Need charity, took place on Sunday 7 November. Together with family and friends the footballers took part in a sponsored walk, which saw them cover an impressive 12k over a circular route from Hawkley to Steep and back. Shine Radio's Jo Gray met the group at their half-way well-earned pitstop (in the pub of course!). She caught up with team manager Simon Milne and assistant manager Ed Armstrong resting their fee and having a well deserved break at The Cricketer's Inn, Steep. After a few more hours walking the team made it - and their fundraising target of £500 has been smashed with almost £1350 being raised so far! But it's not too late if you'd like to support the team and donate. If you would like to help boost Fundraising FC's donation to Children in Need you can with Just Giving. An alarming number of Americans are lonely. Recent estimates range from 22 percent to as high as 61 percent, and that was before the COVID-19 pandemic made "social distancing" a household term. According to Louise Hawkley, PhD, an expert on loneliness and social isolation, the loneliness "epidemic" has serious consequences for our health as individuals and as a society. On Road to Resilience, Dr. Hawkley explains what happens when our hardwired social "hunger" isn't satisfied, and how loneliness can become a vicious cycle. Plus, she weighs in on the role of social media and offers advice on breaking pandemic-related social isolation.Dr. Hawkley is a Senior Research Scientist at NORC at the University of Chicago. For photos, links, and transcripts of all our episodes, visit https://www.mountsinai.org/rtrRoad to Resilience is a podcast that brings you stories and insights to help you thrive in a challenging world. C.C. Hawkley is back in the house with me today on the show and we'll be discussing the new AEW (All Elite Wrestling) organization which is coming about and ready to take the fight to the WWE. C.C. will break down the current struggles the WWE is going through and why the new AEW is a possible threat. It's extremely entertaining and the different ways the AEW is breaking into the market seems like something that could really take over. With the proper financial backing, proper marketing, and proper venues, the AEW may just be the biggest Pro Wrestling Promotion we come to know. This episode is very special as we bring on two amazing guests to share their knowledge with The Gametime Guru listeners. A few months back we interviewed Alex Gold in which we were able to hear more about his background and his show, which at the time was called "The Drive" on ESPN Boise. Just a few short weeks later, ESPN Boise announced they would no longer be doing work in the treasure valley and instead made a change to an alternative rock station. This left just one major sports station to cover sports locally in Boise. We bring on KTIK's very own, Mike Prater to the show to discuss this and give us his perspective on the matter. Mike brings years of experience to the table as he's worked in sports for quite some time. My co-host, C.C. Hawkley conducts an amazing interview with Mike and it is well worth the listen. In that interview C.C. and Mike discuss the fall of ESPN Boise and also the partnership with CBS Sports Radio. How did CBS step up to the plate? Well one of the ways is by providing some amazing sports coverage from the national level. In the mornings, we get to hear from Damon Amendolara each morning on "The D.A. Show." Just a few months ago, the crew from "The D.A. Show" came to Boise to do a tour and I had an amazing opportunity of speaking with D.A. for just two short minutes. They are two minutes I'll never forget as I was able to be recorded, on record, with someone I look up to in the industry. This is a great episode as you'll hear from me, C.C., Mike, and D.A. Listen in and enjoy!! Where to Find Me: iTunes - https://apple.co/2syRPkw Spotify - http://spoti.fi/2oVVZ36 Stitcher - http://bit.ly/2sR9m90 TuneIn - http://bit.ly/2Fx5UlU
I've had many people ask me about my story and how I got into podcasting. This interview is an amazing opportunity for me to share my story. I chose to have my good friend, C.C. Hawkley join me and perform a reverse interview. Why C.C.? Well it's because he's been a major reason the branding of The Gametime Guru has grown to where it is. From day one, C.C. has been supportive of the show and has helped in many ways, including joining me for multiple interviews and also acting as a contributing writer for the website. Enjoy our discussion today as you learn about myself and my journey through the questions of C.C. C.C. Hawkley joins me this week as we break down the following media outlets: The Athletic The Sin Bin The Gametime Guru The Ringer Barstool Sports iSportsweb These media outlets are the new wave of sports information and as sports fans it is important to look to new outlets for your information. We'll explain it all on today's show.
**Please forgive the audio as there is a 'tapping' sound throughout the majority of the recording** It is not very often that you see expansion teams in any league, see success in their inaugural season. C.C. Hawkley is back in the house and him and I are going to discuss how the surprising and exciting success of the Vegas Golden Knights. We'll talk about other franchises that didn't see such success so quickly and we'll make sure to help you have a better idea of how much it would cost to travel to a game in Vegas. C.C. is a well-rounded sports fan as you know so don't miss our round-up discussion on all sports at the beginning, followed by our discussion on the Golden Knights!! **Again, please forgive the audio, I hope you are able to enjoy the discussion by ignoring the annoying tapping sound**
On this episode I'm joined by the one and only C.C. Hawkley as well as a new guest to the show, Derek DeRooy. With new sponsorship "patches" as well as with Nike taking over with the apparel rights for the jerseys, we have a lot to talk about. Listen in as we discuss the "problem" with the jerseys tearing as well as talk about the actual look of the jerseys. It's a fun discussion with C.C. & Derek so get ready for a fun one! Listen towards the end and you'll learn about Sonicsgate when Derek talks about the good ol' Seattle squad that moved to OKC. C.C. Hawkley brings it again with some information about the sport of Hockey. Idaho Steelheads, NHL Free Agency, International Play for Hockey Players, Future of NHL players in the Olympics, etc. Most people also don't understand that in Idaho, we have a MAJOR soccer / baseball fanbase. This is why we talk about the new plans for the Boise Hawks' Stadium in Boise. Can we get a soccer team to Idaho? Would we have enough support for the team? Don't miss the discussion and don't forget to jump over to iTunes to subscribe to the podcast and PLEASE, leave a review.

C.C. will help break down the game and explain why you should attend a Hockey event yourself. This was a great interview and he has a ton of information to share, now it's up to you to listen to it!
