1978 World Series Games 1 and 2 Tuesday October 10th and Wednesday October 11th @ Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA The Los Angeles Dodgers (95 - 67) and the New York Yankees (100 - 63) meet yet again in the World Series. Behind the heroics of Mr. October, Reggie Jackson, the Yankees took last year's Fall Classic in six games, securing the 21st championship in their franchise's dominant history. If they're going to repeat as champions, it will be with a new manager, as Bob Lemon replaced Billy Martin in July. The Yanks turned their season around under the stewardship of Lemon, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a pitcher in 1976. His cool, calm, and collected manner was in stark contrast to the explosive Martin; still, there are rumors abound that owner George Steinbrenner regretted firing the firebrand (technically Martin resigned for ‘health reasons'), and even wanted him back as manager within a matter of days. You can't deny the success the Yankees have had under Lemon, but they'll need to win it all to satisfy the Boss. And even that might not keep him happy for long. The Dodgers dispatched the Phillies in four games, winning the series in walk-off fashion with a Bill Russell single to score Ron Cey. Their offense was hitting on all cylinders in the NLCS, and it was their vaunted All-Star infield that led the way. The aforementioned left side (Russell and Cey) combined for 12 hits and 5 RBI in the four games, only to be outdone by the right side. Team Captain 2B Davey Lopes and former MVP 1B Steve Garvey combined for 14 hits, 6 home runs, and 12 RBI, with Garvey taking home NLCS MVP honors. It has been truly inspired play from this core group, who lost their mentor, hitting and infield coach Jim Gilliam, just a few days ago. His memorial service is planned before the start of game two. Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda desperately wants to start this series with a pair of wins, so to defend home-field advantage he will turn to the top two in his excellent rotation, Tommy John and Burt Hooton. John is coming off of a shutout against Philly, and Hooton is as good as anyone when that knuckle curve is dancing. Yankees manager Bob Lemon will counter with 1978 20 game winner Ed Figueroa and former five time 20 game winner Catfish Hunter. Ace Ron Guidry won't be available until game three, as he pitched the final game of the ALCS against Kansas City. Audio clips from joeydbball on Youtube (links to games below). NBC Broadcast with Joe Garagiola, Tony Kubek, Tom Seaver, and Curt Gowdy Game 1: LAD LHP Tommy John (17 - 10 3.30 ERA 213 IP) vs. NYY RHP Ed Figueroa (20 - 9 2.99 ERA 253 IP) Game 2: LAD RHP Burt Hooton (19 - 10 2.71 ERA 236 IP) vs. NYY Jim ‘Catfish' Hunter (12 - 6 3.58 ERA 118 IP) As always, shout out to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, boxscores, background information, and much, much more. Catch you next time, P.C.O.

Hey middle aged gamers? Are you back to work yet? How's everything going? Today's show had a little bit of a technical issue with Adam muting himself for most of the show. We apologize for that. Despite that we still managed to spend a lot of time talking about some great games for you to pick up this month.
In this episode we discuss both the Atlanta Falcons and Georgia Southern upcoming games this week. They both play on the same night and that's pretty cool. This episode we talk about our trip to Minneapolis, Minnesota for baseball and football games. Neither the Angels or the Lions, who we wanted to win, won. However still an amazing trip. We got to see the city a bit and do some shopping. The fans at the Vikings vs Lions game made the us bank stadium shake. The energy was electric. Twins vs Angels was so awesome as well. Baseball just has a different vibe. Hope you enjoy. There is a bit of a curve ball as well. Thanks for listening.
Unexpected realizations that if Bethel had had its No. 1 quarterback healthy and won in Week 2 at UW-Platteville, perhaps we'd be in a position where someone might have given Bethel ... a No. 1 vote? Stranger things have happened. Or, well, things that are similarly strange have happened already. We had two big games to key on from Saturday, and one was a barnburner. The other ... well, it was just a team getting lit up. But we hear from players on the winning side of both games, including Bethel quarterback Jaran Roste, that aforementioned quarterback who severely dislocated his elbow in Week 1 and was on the field in Week 4. He talks us through the injury, his recovery, a key touchdown pass and more as we talk with him in our Fast 5 segment. Plus In The Huddle's Frank Rossi was in Abilene, Texas, for the Mary Hardin-Baylor win against Hardin-Simmons and he not only brings audio from Kyle King and Johnny Smith-Rider, he brings his first-hand eyewitness report. In addition, Pat and Greg hand out game balls, spotlight two interesting things from each region (as always), plus more. There's a list in small type at the bottom of this page of all the teams that are talked about. Fan question in our mailbag from Mike Shoultz @mikey_shoultz: Are we ranking the BEST TEAMS? Or the best RESUMES? We all know If Platteville, or Stout line it up against Albion, DePauw, Huntingdon they're beating them by 7-21 points. While their records aren't as good, they're better teams. And if matched up that would be proven. (There's more in a second tweet from him as well.) Pat Coleman and Greg Thomas talk about it all in the latest D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast. 6-21-2022 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this program by congratulating Draymond Green and the Golden State Warriors on their seventh (and fourth in the last eight years) NBA Championship. John was critical of Green's performance in Games One (1)- Four (4), but the all around team leader was strong in Game Five (5) and elite in Game Sox (6). John then discusses the season ending injury to Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon and spends some time talking about the recent (last 10-12 years) history of the Angels giving out bad contracts. John mentions specifically the deals they gave Rendon, Albert Pujols, Josh Hamilton, Justin Upton, and CJ Wilson and the fact that none of them worked out favorably for Los Angeles. Is it the fault of the team for giving said bad contracts? Hindsight says it is. Was Rendon worth $245 million over seven (7) years? Maybe not, but he was due a big contract based off his performance in Washington. There was a market for Rendon's services and the Angels outbid the other teams for him. Pujols' contract does not look good in hindsight, but how does one explain not giving him that big of a deal coming off the run he had over his eleven (11) seasons in St. Louis? John questions some of the blame that is often thrown on a team that signs a player to a contract that ends up not working out. At what point is it the responsibility of the player to perform to a close enough level to their past? Depreciation is understandable, but the dropoffs of some of the Angels players, particularly Hamilton and Upton, could not have been predicted. John makes some similar points about Jason Bay and a minor point about Carl Pavano before discussing the parameters of Shohei Ohtani's next contract. First, John talks about how the Angels cannot let their past bad signings impact their expected investment in Ohtani. Secondly, John breaks down Shohei's value as both a top of the rotation starting pitcher and as a middle of the order bat wondering if he should get paid for both. Or each separately? This, of course, is assuming Ohtani can perform the duties of two specific (and different) players over the course of the next decade. John finishes off the program by proposing a lengthy (between 10-12 years, maybe more) contract to keep the average annual value down, similar to the deal that Ilya Kovalchuk got when he signed a long term deal with the New Jersey Devils, albeit one that the players did not fulfill the obligations of.

#playerofgames #deepmind #alphazero Special Guest: First author Martin Schmid (https://twitter.com/Lifrordi) Games have been used throughout research as testbeds for AI algorithms, such as reinforcement learning agents. However, different types of games usually require different solution approaches, such as AlphaZero for Go or Chess, and Counterfactual Regret Minimization (CFR) for Poker. Player of Games bridges this gap between perfect and imperfect information games and delivers a single algorithm that uses tree search over public information states, and is trained via self-play. The resulting algorithm can play Go, Chess, Poker, Scotland Yard, and many more games, as well as non-game environments. OUTLINE: 0:00 - Introduction 2:50 - What games can Player of Games be trained on? 4:00 - Tree search algorithms (AlphaZero) 8:00 - What is different in imperfect information games? 15:40 - Counterfactual Value- and Policy-Networks 18:50 - The Player of Games search procedure 28:30 - How to train the network? 34:40 - Experimental Results 47:20 - Discussion & Outlook Paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2112.03178 Abstract: Games have a long history of serving as a benchmark for progress in artificial intelligence. Recently, approaches using search and learning have shown strong performance across a set of perfect information games, and approaches using game-theoretic reasoning and learning have shown strong performance for specific imperfect information poker variants. We introduce Player of Games, a general-purpose algorithm that unifies previous approaches, combining guided search, self-play learning, and game-theoretic reasoning. Player of Games is the first algorithm to achieve strong empirical performance in large perfect and imperfect information games -- an important step towards truly general algorithms for arbitrary environments. We prove that Player of Games is sound, converging to perfect play as available computation time and approximation capacity increases. Player of Games reaches strong performance in chess and Go, beats the strongest openly available agent in heads-up no-limit Texas hold'em poker (Slumbot), and defeats the state-of-the-art agent in Scotland Yard, an imperfect information game that illustrates the value of guided search, learning, and game-theoretic reasoning. Are the GM and Players playing the same game? The answers obvious isn't it? Hi everyone! Welcome to episode #3 of the Art of Hosting Podcast. I'm your host Mary Amaechi and as always I'm so excited that you're joining me for today's show where I'm going to be walking through six ways that you can refresh your vacation rental and maximize your bookings with strategic home decor Tips. I'm the Founder and Creative Director of Ehzii Mary Interiors, which is a boutique online interior design studio with the goal to help you get new and more bookings for their vacation rentals.SECTION 1: Create a Dedicated Workspace:One way to make your listing competitive is by setting up a dedicated workspace that is laptop friendly. SECTION 2: Make Lounge Spaces Fun with Games:One of the best things to incorporate in a vacation rental is easy access to games. These can include board or card games, or virtual game set-ups.SECTION 3: Decorate with Removable Wallpaper:Removable wallpaper gives you the freedom to be versatile in how you want to design different rooms in your vacation rental.SECTION 4: Maximize Small Spaces:Making a small space comfortable can be a challenge, but is totally doable! The key to maximizing small spaces is to incorporate furniture and accessories that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional.SECTION 5: Bring the Outdoors Inside:Plants are life-giving and can really help to change the mood of a room. If you're looking for ways to liven up your vacation rental, consider buying house plants that don't need that much water and sunlight to survive.SECTION 6: Customize Your Outdoor Spaces: Your outdoor space should look and feel like a get-away. You can do this by customizing the accessories in your backyard, front yard, or patio. With the third overall episode in Quiz and Hers Season 4, Justin selects… a whole game about the NFL Draft! We also trade questions about Midwest geography, a uniquely modern form of art, and antitrust law. Will Justin’s picks pay off, or will Hallie win this Draft Day competition? 3:20: Q1 (Sports & Games): One of the most notable trades in draft history happened in 2004, when the San Diego Chargers drafted a quarterback with the first overall pick. He refused to play for San Diego, so they traded him to the New York Giants for another QB, whom they had drafted fourth overall. Name both of these now-veteran signal-callers. 13:17: Q2 (Times & Places): The 2015 and 2016 drafts were held in Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre, across the street from what historic park, which is named for a President, and hosted a draft-themed fair? 20:23: Q3 (Science): The draft is when the NFL relies most heavily on the methods of data science, but American football has been slower to adopt analytics than other sports. In other words, the NFL does not yet have an equivalent to what empirical, data-driven approach to building a baseball team, which gets its name from the Society for American Baseball Research? 32:37: Q4 (Everything Else): The NFL’s drafting procedures have occasionally come under scrutiny as restricting players’ autonomy, but the league has argued that, because they are agreed on in collective bargaining between the Player’s Association and the League, they are not in violation of what Antitrust Act, named for an Ohio Senator? 40:37: Q5 (Arts & Literature): To promote last year’s draft, the NFL commissioned five artists, including Jerod “Dtox” Davies and Jose “Bware Sparks” Ramirez to paint five top prospects at various sites around Dallas. What particular type of art were these paintings? 46:37: Q6 (Sounds & Screen): From 2006 to 2014, the draft was held in what New York City venue, known for its art deco architecture, concerts, and Christmas shows? Por otra parte Darío Manrique entrevista a Two Games One Boy, Julián Carrara. Me encanta.

How do you condense more around forty years of interactive history into one book? Games journalist Jordan Minor (PC Mag, The Escapist) has taken on this task, with a new beautifully illustrated book "Video Game of the Year" which charts the biggest moments in games. Jordan shares his history as a games writer, the limit of a single game per year and why certain games were chosen over others. It's also an interesting insight into the politics of games over the last four decades. You can support SIFTER's independent gaming journalism by☕ Tipping us on KoFi https://www.ko-fi.com/sifterHQ
