OK, so my Cool Friend TJ Shevlin may be the Product Development Coordinator for Upper Deck's Marvel Comics line of trading cards, and that's pretty amazing. But boy does that merely scratch the surface of all the cool, amazing stuff he's done. TJ is one of only SIX Eisner Awards judges (the Oscars of comics, given away at SDCC) and he's had his hands in almost every nerdy cookie jar you can imagine. OverviewAt the ripe age of 15, John Shevlin made the move from Ireland to Queens in an effort to pursue the American dream. The youngest of 10, John hailed from a long line of hard working tradespeople, so it was no surprise that he spent his first few moments in the U.S. working for his brother, a framer. With no knowledge of the trade, John threw himself into the trial by fire environment, paying his dues as he put in his 10,000 hours, mastering the art of framing. Now, seasoned with 25 years of experience under his belt, John has spent the last 10 month's building out Shevlin Construction, a self-owned commercial and residential framing and finishing company that prides itself on providing clients with loyalty and high quality workmanship. While it may sound cliche, the proof is in the pudding with John's book's, booked out for the next 10 months. Tune into this week's podcast, as we sit down with John to learn a little more about his background, how he got to where he is today, and what he sees as his biggest challenge down the road for Shevlin Construction and the trade itself. About JohnJohn Shevlin moved to Queens, New York right from Ireland at just 15 years old in 1997. The youngest of 10, John, despite going through a major life transition, was set up for success with the help of his older brother, a framer. Through him, John was able to learn the art of framing and finish from the ground up, paying his dues as an order taker while navigating the trial by fire environment that came with learning the trade. Not long after making the move to Queens, John and his brother made yet another move. This time to Springfield, Massachusetts, attending school for the first time ever at East Longmeadow High. John spent the next few years earning his GED before jumping right back into the trade working for a variety of jobs, both at construction companies and with a union. His time in the trade had it's pros and cons, but his leap to entrepreneurship really bubbled up when he realized his work life was overtaking his family life. In the years after high school, John found himself married with two kids. With more at stake, John pushed himself to take on all the work he could get in an effort to support his family. Soon his workload hit a peak, and after 6 years of a 5:30 A.M. - 10:30 P.M. daily shift, John took note that his kids were getting older, and his was missing out on that time - so he took matters into his own hands Today, seasoned with over 25 years of experience, John run's Shevlin Construction, a 10-month old, self owned business that is already booked out for the next 10 months. His biggest challenge? Finding good help. In his generation, if you weren't first you were last, and more often than not he has struggled to find that same mentality in the younger generations coming into the trades. From his stance, framing feels like a dying trade, but yet there's still so much opportunity. In his eyes all it takes is drive and loyalty. Sure, it's hard work, but anyone motivated enough to take on the challenge is sure to find a wealth of success. Tune in to take a deep dive into John's full background, and more.
Designing a course isn't linear. And it makes sense, since learning itself isn't a linear activity! We spend years building expertise and gaining knowledge, and concepts don't neatly build on each-other one after another. Our skills end up looking more like nodes on a graph with numerous edges connecting them all. And Kyle Shevlin knows this well.Sometimes ideas will live in his head for years before they develop into something more. And developing those ideas involves researching and learning the topic in his own ways. Once things start to take shape it's important for Kyle to get things out quickly. With his MDX blog he's able to get out quality content for people in a short amount of time. Getting things out quickly isn't just rushing. A better term would be optimizing for completion. Kyle is self aware of his own patterns and knows that what's best for him is to optimize for completion, and spend less time getting bogged down in making other aspects of the course perfect such as the marketing, or the pricing model. And that's something that you should keep in mind after you've finished listening to his episode. Look back and think about previous projects that you may have left incomplete. Is there a pattern? Try to keep it in mind with the next thing you work on, and optimize for it!

She was in court to talk about the loss felt by tribal members because this bear was killed on the reservation."It's not just about this one particular trespasser on our closed reservation, but it's the idea of all these trophy hunters just taking needlessly just for their ego. To try to brag and have something on their wall.," said Beaulieu.Jody's daughter drove her to the federal courthouse in St Paul. She says she sat by herself in the courtroom for about 3 hours. And then she took the stand to speak to the entire courtroom."I introduced myself as we do nowadays in our Native tongue...My spiritual name is Black Standing Woman and I am Bear Clan," she said. She wanted to communicate how important the bear is to the Red Lake people and many indigenous people in North America."I told him my youngest grandchild who is 4 years old, his name is Mawkwin - Bear Robe. That should give enough indication about how we deem and how we hold the bear up to be our family, our brother, our teacher," said Beaulieu. At one point she says she turned directly to Stimac - the man who had killed the bear:"I looked squarely at the guy and I said - just as we have a heart, that bear had a heart and had a life," said Beaulieu. She said the bear is valuable - not in a materialistic way - but in terms of being part of the mystery of life."You know they always want to define the mystery. You accept it and you have respect for it. You don't have to break it down, put it in compartments, put it in A-B-C-D order, you just have respect...Without question, you have respect," she said.Jody Beaulieu says she's encountered bears many times on the reservation. It's just part of living there. "I said when bears come around our yard, the dogs have a different bark. I say oh, there's a bear in the yard and we need to rally the dogs in so the bear can go about its business and go on its way. I mean even that - do you pay attention to the animal world when they're telling you something?" she said.Jody says many Red Lakers she knows are satisfied that Brett Stimas was charged. They're pleased he will do do prison time for both trespassing on the closed reservation and for illegally killing the bear.A couple days after she spoke in court — Jody drove home to the Red Lake reservation to be with family. She says it's always good to come home. Being in nature on the reservation is healing.IN other news —Water protectors focused on the Mississippi River continue to call for a stop to the new Line 3 oil pipeline in northern Minnesota. Much of the action is lead by Native lead groups Honor the Earth, the Rise Coalition, the Indigenous Environmental Network. They want treaty rights enforced so the water and living beings in the area are protected from potential oil leaks and spills. Nancy Beaulieu is with this coalition: "We're here as an encampment to protect the Mississippi and defend our treaty rights to be here and to exist. I just want the whole world to know those treaties are a two party agreement between our ancestors and the other ancestors - settlers who signed those treaty agreements with us." said Nancy Beaulieu.Over the past few weeks, thousands of people have been protesting at pipeline construction sites on the Mississippi. Hundreds of people have been arrested and released.According to Honor the Earth newsletter, actions are planned to continue in Shevlin and Palisade, Minnesota. In both places, the pipeline is planned to tunnel underneath the Mississippi River.Melissa Townsend reporting for Minnesota Native News.

GUEST BIO: Kyle Shevlin is a front end web developer and software engineer who specializes in JavaScript and React. Kyle is also host of the Second Career Devs podcast where he talks to guests who became software engineers after a previous career. EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Phil’s guest on today’s show is Kyle Shevlin. Kyle specializes in working with JavaScript, React, Redux, GraphQL, Noda, Webpack, D3 and several others at the front end. Currently, he is working as a Senior Software Engineer for Webflow. Kyle is an Egghead.io instructor and is about to release a new JavaScript related course. He is also the host for the very popular Second Career Devs podcast, which is targeted at IT professionals who have previously worked in other industries. Kyle also speaks at conferences, meetups and regularly live streams on Twitch. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (00.57) – So Kyle, can I ask you to expand on that brief intro and tell us a little bit more about yourself? Kyle explains that he is a software engineer at WebFlow. There he is working on democratizing software as well as expanding the world of visual development and website building. He also makes podcasts and enjoys spending too long on Twitter. Kyle is a good scratch golfer and at one time he was going to turn professional. But, things did not work out, which he is actually now quite glad about. Playing sport is a tough way to make a living, especially if you are not in the top 100. He jokes that he much prefers his cushy IT career. (2.28) – Can you please share a unique career tip with the I.T. Career Energizers audience? Kyle says it is important to be open to opportunity. Over the years, Kyle has taken advantage of opportunities that he was not really looking for. Taking chances has had a very positive impact on his life. However, Kyle is not suggesting you go into things blind. You still need to do a bit of research to make sure it is a genuine opportunity and is right for you. (3.22) – Phil comments that a lot of people are reluctant to take risks, so is interested to know how Kyle overcomes that tendency. Kyle responds by admitting that he is more risk averse than he would like to be. However, when his gut reaction is to hold back, he actively pauses and fully evaluates the situation. This helps him to respond differently, if it is appropriate to do so. A lot of the time it turns out to be fear that he does not have the ability that holds him back. Every time he has pushed himself to get past that fear, he succeeds. (4.24) – Can you tell us about your worst career moment? And what you learned from that experience. A few years ago, when he was first hired his manager tasked him with stirring things up a bit. His manager wanted to mix things as a way of driving change, with the long term goal of producing a positive result for everyone. Unfortunately, a few weeks into the job Kyle’s manager was moved on. So, he no longer had their support. However, Kyle carried on with the task he had been given. Unfortunately, things did not work out well. He tried to push change without gaining trust and getting consensus first. This experience taught him that you need to pick the right time to make changes. If something needs changing, Kyle now pauses, takes stock, appraises the situation properly, identifies the priorities, and then proceeds. Most importantly of all, he builds trust before trying to implement change. (6.48) – What was your best career moment? For Kyle, this is a tricky question because he automatically thinks of the latest thing he has achieved as a highlight. Each new achievement still gives him a bit of a rush. Career-wise this is a good thing because it keeps him chasing the next accomplishment. Kyle believes that the fact he is always chasing that high is partly responsible for his success. For example, he is about to release a new course as a way of building on the work he has been doing with egghead.io. He knows from all of the feedback that what people have learned from him has made a positive difference to their lives. That great feeling has driven him on to produce more tutorials. (8.19) – Phil comments on the fact that feedback is great because it gives your energy levels a boost, feeds your passion and enthusiasm. This ends up pushing you towards your goals. Kyle agrees that this positive feedback loop is very beneficial. When people tell you your work is good, it pushes you on to produce something even better. (8.41) – Can you tell us what excites you about the future of the IT industry and careers? The fact that something new is always happening is one of the things Kyle finds exciting about the IT industry. In particular, how much the JavaScript ecosystem has grown and is still growing. It is particularly good to see the language being updated more frequently. Kyle is also excited to see more people getting involved in web development and software engineering through JavaScript. Code schools are attracting people from all walks of life. They bring lots of experience, energy and passion with them, which is beneficial for the IT industry as a whole. (10.22) – What drew you to a career in IT? Kyle really enjoys solving little problems. He has always been a fan of logic puzzles, crosswords and that sort of thing. In fact, as part of his philosophy degree, he studied logic. When he began to code, he was able to apply what he had learned about logic in a tangible way. In ways that make a positive difference in the world. (10.53) – What is the best career advice you have ever received? Someone once told Kyle to remember that you have two ears and one mouth. He likes to talk, so has had to learn to pause and really listen. (11.07) – If you were to begin your IT career again, right now, what would you do? Kyle says the only thing he would probably do differently is to skip grad school. Before starting his software engineer career, Kyle was a pastor. A job which led to him spending years studying for a theology masters. Now, he really wishes he had skipped his degree, discovered IT, and switched sooner. (12.22) – What are you currently focusing on in your career? Right now, Kyle is focusing on making a good start at WebFlow. His past couple of jobs were not a good fit for him. But, he already knows the CEO and many members of the Webflow team well, so feels that he is finally in the right place. So, right now, he just wants to get stuck in and do a great job. (13.24) – So, are you planning to continue with your podcast? Kyle is planning to continue putting out a podcast every couple of weeks. (14.00) – What is the number one non-technical skill that has helped you the most in your IT career? Kyle has found that becoming more empathetic has really helped him. Trying to understand how others are feeling and what their needs are helps you to click with them. Over the years, he has realized that the times he has failed usually correlate to when he has been least empathetic. Phil agrees, he has noticed that more people in the IT sector are waking up to the need to be more empathetic. It is a change that is greatly benefiting the industry. (15.50) – Phil asks Kyle to share a final piece of career advice with the audience. Kyle’s advice is to be vigilant about burnout. He suffered through this about a year ago. So, he wants people to be aware of the danger and take better care of themselves and set aside enough time to enjoy a healthy personal life. BEST MOMENTS: (2.40) KYLE – "Be open to opportunity." (4.16) KYLE – "Get more into the habit of taking that risk and saying yes, because that is the only way you're going to grow" (8.33) KYLE – "When you hear quality things about the work you're doing it encourage you to make even more quality work for them" (11.00) KYLE – "I'd studied logic and coding allows me to apply that logic in a very tangible way and make a change in the world" (13.22) KYLE – "Work happiness leads to life happiness, in my case." (15.00) PHIL- “Empathy is something that people need to consider almost daily when they interact with people.” CONTACT KYLE: Twitter: https://twitter.com/kyleshevlin LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kyleshevlin/ Website: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kyleshevlin/

In this episode, I have the great pleasure of talking with Glynndana Shevlin, a Disney Resort worker and member of UNITE HERE Local 11. We talk about her life, her time working at Disney, and the struggles she and her co-workers face to make ends meet. Disney workers' wages, like the wages of workers around the country, have stagnated as inflation and the cost of living have exploded. While the Walt Disney Company continues to record yearly profits in the billions, the workers who "make the magic" for visitors from all over the world are struggling with homelessness, food insecurity, medical bills, etc. I talk to Glynndana about this and about the ballot initiative in Orange County to raise worker wages. Glynndana is an incredibly lovely person and I was really moved hearing her love for what she does as well as her commitment to ensuring that she and her fellow workers are treated fairly and get the dignity and respect they give to others on a daily basis. In May 1920, wealthy womanizer Joseph Elwell was found shot to death alone in his locked house in upper Manhattan. The police identified hundreds of people who might have wanted Elwell dead, but they couldn't quite pin the crime on any of them. In this week’s episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll review the sensational murder that the Chicago Tribune called "one of the toughest mysteries of all times." We'll also learn a new use for scuba gear and puzzle over a sympathetic vandal. Intro: The Dodgers, Yankees, and Giants played a three-way baseball game in 1944. LearnChair Radio host Bob Dragone takes a look at leadership in the arts in this interview with up and coming metals artist Calina Shevlin. Callie is an expert in the art of guilloche, a technique used to engrave the elaborate and delicate patterns found on top end Swiss watches Faberge eggs, and increasingly in fine jewelry. She is one of only 27 artists in the world who have mastered the machines and methods used to produce the guilloche patterns. Recently, Callie published a book, Guilloche, A History and Practical Manual by Schiffer Publishers. This is the most comprehensive text on the art of guilloche ever published and will certainly be the defining publication on the topic for years to come. In the interview Callie explains how she first became interested in guilloche and her search to find a mentor to teach her the techniques. After a time working for Swiss watch companies she has now established her own business to further the art of guilloche in own creative manner. Callie’s talent, perseverance and creativity are a lesson in leadership for those who have a vision and wish to establish themselves in whatever field they choose to pursue.

Last week, we hosted our first conference, the Tradestreaming Money Conference. We had hundreds of top speakers and attendees from the largest financial institutions like Vanguard, US Bank, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, NY Life, and Fidelity a join us to talk about reigniting growth in our industry. Those discussions took different forms. Some of our sessions talked about the state-of-the-art in marketing. What are current best practices to acquire and retain new customers? Other sessions focused on how to drive more innovation within large financial institutions and attract new top talent. All in, it was a great event to learn, network, and collaborate. Ron Shevlin, Director of Research at Cornerstone Advisors was one of those speakers. An analyst's analyst, Shevlin has been covering the financial services space for 25 years. One of the things I appreciate most about Ron is his no-nonsense delivery style. He frequently questions consensus thinking, going deeper and more honest into many of the hot-button issues our industry faces. He shares those views on his blog, Snarketing 2.0 Shevlin participated in a unique format session at our conference called Pardon the Interruption. Unscripted and unprepared, I threw various words and concepts at him, letting him riff off of them for a minute in front of our audience. The following recording joins that conversation part way through. You can get this episode of the podcast, as well as over 130 previous episodes in our archives of the Tradestreaming Podcast, at our website, www.Tradestreaming.com. “Affable and unpretentious” would sum up Tony James Shevlin perfectly, yet this UK-based Anglo-Irish musician has a musical pedigree that would have gone to a lesser man's head. It's not often you'll have a solo guitarist playing a small venue who can introduce his next song and casually mention “this was the International Anthem of Peace chosen by Amnesty International” or “I wrote this one for REM”. However, as he starts to play, the tune and lyrics have that rare quality of true originality and you wonder why you've never heard of this singer-songwriter before. Tony's been a professional musician for most of his adult life, and has performed around the world, from Europe to Russia, Africa, America, the Middle East, Australia… in fact it would be quicker for him to tell you where he hasn't been. In between songs he'll tell you of times spent in a cell with Shane McGowan singing in his ear or some of his many other tales from a life spent in music. On his travels, he's played with top flight musicians such as Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello, Neil Finn, Sheryl Crow), Mike Casswell (Brian May Band, Cozy Powell Band), Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello, Suzanne Vega), Justin Hildreth (Joan Armatrading, Thomas Dolby), Tim Bye (Tony Hadley, Martin Fry) and Spy Austin (Desmond Dekker, Style Council). He's also recorded with producers such as Colin Fairley (The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Elvis Costello, The Bluebells), Robin Millar (Sade, David Gray) and Jim Abbiss (Kasabian, Adele, Arctic Monkeys). Tony's work has been featured on national ad campaigns (for BT), recorded at BBC's Maida Vale Studios, performed at the Shepherd's Bush Empire, and played on BBC Radio 5 Live. Dues, as they say, have been paid. Tony chats with Slacker.
