Loretta Lynn rose to musical fame through songs such as “Coal Miner's Daughter,” “Trouble in Paradise,” and “The Pill.” But have you ever wondered how her Kentucky roots influenced her lyrics? In Adams, Cumberland, Franklin and York Counties – also known as the South Mountain region – there's been progress in preserving farmland and even non-farmland, but almost half of the streams in the region are impaired and there are more extreme hot and rainy days. Those are a few of the findings of the first ever “State-of-the-Region Report Card" conducted by the conservation organization – South Mountain Partnership. The metrics that got a thumbs up for working well were more preserved land, including farmland, driving proximity to trails, and better air quality. The thumbs down, meaning more work to do, unfortunately was a longer list that included impaired streams and creeks, a decrease in riparian buffers, less forested land, fewer acres of orchards, walking proximity to trails and parks, and more extreme heat and rainy days. A sideways thumb translated to more work needs to be done or more information is needed. That grade went to wetlands preserved, farmland, historic places, public open spaces, trail and bike routes and driving proximity to water access. On The Spark Wednesday, Katie Hess, Director of the South Mountain Partnership and Pennsylvania Landscape Conservation said the report card is the first phase of a three-part project,"We have a report to final report that sets out recommendations for taking on the challenges that were revealed in this project. And South Mountain Partnership is taking on a handful of these over the next 5 to 10 years. But there are over 65 recommendations. And so we invite any individual or group who is interested in being part of implementing or exploring the implementation of other recommendations to join us. Julia Chain, Program Manager of South Mountain Partnership added, "Something that we're trying to weave in through each of these recommendations and how we take action on them is accessibility. So, we understand that creating the most accessible opportunity to interact with nature is really critical. And I think this is just a good opportunity to highlight the work that the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation has done here, because they've done a lot of this research to identify where we can grow in terms of accessibility. And they also really support our program. Our conservation landscape is one of eight in Pennsylvania and was selected by DCNR for being such a unique location."Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Currently, Tata Steel NL is the biggest emitter of CO2 and nitrogen in the Netherlands, and links have been made between their factory's emissions and higher-than-average cancer rates in communities that live close to their factories. As a response, the company is planning to detox their emissions and pivot to Green Steel production, which they will power with green hydrogen. Still, the future of the company in the Netherlands remains far from certain, and they are facing backlash from many directions in Dutch society.

Having a meal with family and friends can be an experience of deep connectedness — or a table full of landmines. We're jugging not only sensitive topics, but sensitive stomachs, palates and dietary choices. Your best friend is gluten-free, your brother's boyfriend is lactose-intolerant, and your uncle only eats meat. It can make for a tricky menu! Most of us are only one degree of separation from someone who identifies as some kind of vegetarian. In this episode, we bring to the table Nashvillians who practice vegetarianism for religious and health benefits — as well as an expression of the world as we wish it could be. But first, @ us! Guests: Hemanth Rangarajan, IT professional, Hindu vegetarian Tewodros "Teddy" Manaye, software professional, vice president of Ethiopian Community Association in Nashville, Ethiopian Orthodox Cara Suvall, Assistant Clinical Professor of Law, Jewish vegetarian Mariah Ragland, owner, Radical Rabbit Rev. Mikey Noechel, MS, Buddhist teacher and pastoral counselor

In the first episode of the Toxic Avengers podcast, we interview Lois Gibbs, who led the successful fight for community relocation from the poisoned neighborhood of Love Canal in Niagara Falls, New York. For the past 40 years, she has been the Director of the Center for Health, Environment & Justice, helping communities facing similar threats to their health from toxic chemicals. www.https://chej.org/ The interview, taped in February, begins discussing Lois' sabbatical and how she separates her work and non-work lives. We discuss how the pandemic has affected CHEJ's advocacy. Lois outlines two of CHEJ's current projects for ensuring protection for communities overburdened with pollution, and discusses the different perspectives of national environmental groups and local community organizers. She also provides insight into how CHEJ helps individual communities organize their opposition to toxic threats including incinerators, oil refineries and chemical plants, and the creative process that CHEJ's interns use to develop new policies and strategies.
This episode features Dr. Michael C. Velarde, a professor at the Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines Diliman. Lejia Helling is a Community Organizing Associate with Center for Health Environment and Justice (CHEJ). The campaign that she is working on is called Make Polluters Pay which is making polluting corporations pay for their contamination. To give some background, there are currently 1,388 toxic waste sites in the United States that are so dangerous they have been designated “Superfund” sites by the federal government. But there's no money left to clean up the contamination. Originally, big polluting companies paid into a fund that was used to clean up their messes. But in 1995, Congress let the Polluters Pay Tax expire. By 2003, our Superfund was broke. Ever since, cleanup efforts have slowed to a crawl while all of us as taxpayers are left holding the bag. Today, some of the biggest polluting corporations are making billions of dollars per year in profits and paying zero dollars in taxes. As climate change causes more flooding, hurricanes, and other natural disasters, increasing the risk of widespread toxic exposure from these sites, there is no time to waste. With Lejiah we talk about what got her into organizing work, the Make Polluters Pay campaign, why young people should / are involved in the climate movement, and imaging a better future. Mazingira na afya (Health and Environment) is a song done by Samchizi and Shaffie. The song describes how a clean environment translates to good health. According to UNICEF, Kenya has the third largest number of people in Africa who drink directly from contaminated surface water surfaces and an estimated 5 million Kenyans practice open defecation. The situation is worse in urban slums where the number of toilets are countable forcing people to openly defecate or use rivers as their toilets
Experts Shyla Raghav of Conservation International and Maria Saxton, Ph.D. of Hill Studio and Tiny Home Industry Association join HLHP Radio to speak about our carbon footprint and ecological footprint, what it is and how we reduce it. Shyla speaks about climate change and how caring for our planet helps to facilitate natures powerful ability to heal under the right circumstances. In our daily lives we make a series of decisions, how we get to work, what we buy, what companies we support. These decisions all inform the size and impact of our ecological footprints. If we can better understand our decisions we can consciously reduce our footprints and help our planet to heal. As of 2020, we’ve experienced a peak in emissions, and the necessary policy to reduce this peak has not been enacted. However, there is a temporary opportunity in COVID-19 to make longer term systemic change as we rebuild our economy with green jobs. Shyla also shares insight from the communities she works with worldwide and details the differences between the ecological footprint in developing and developed nations. Maria details her in depth research on reducing our ecological footprint by moving to tiny homes. She reminds us that while we may not be involved in her study, there are many footprint calculators available for people to understand the impact of their lifestyle. The primary finding of Maria’s study is the 45% reduction in tiny home dwellers ecological footprints. The people in Maria’s study grew more of their food, ate less animal based products, spent more time in nature, had improved fuel economy in their vehicles, and traveled less by airplane in a given year. In regard to improved health, many participants shared their financial freedom, decreased home upkeep and increased time to spend with family, pursue hobbies, and improved mental health. Maria also notes a strong sense of community within tiny home dwellers - in physical and virtual communities alike. David Grimm—online news editor for Science—talks with Sarah Crespi about the chance a naked mole rat could die at any one moment. Surprisingly, the probability a naked mole rat will die does not go up as it gets older. Researchers are looking at the biology of these fascinating animals for clues to their seeming lack of aging. Sarah also interviews freelancer Douglas Starr about his feature story on the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study—a comprehensive study of the lives of all the babies born in 1 year in a New Zealand hospital.
