Your Marriage Communication Equation :: [Ep. 166]What is the sum of your conversations? In front of the kids, behind closed doors, at the dinner table, in the car, in the parking lot as you are coming into church, over the phone, even what you are texting? If we were to take each conversation and use it to create a conversation equation, what would the sum be? When you got engaged and decided to get married, you were hoping for a certain outcome. It was kind of like a math equation - you knew what the answer was, now you just needed to bring everything together to get the desired sum.Communication is a big part of this equation. BUT we can't have a great marriage and get where we want to go in this relationship without addressing what and how we communicate. It is important to never forget - communication is only part of the equation. Like any good algebra problem, we have to solve what's in the parentheses in order to solve the whole. So today in this episode, we are honing in on this factor - the communication factor. Don't miss it!Psst! Come back here after listening to this episode for some helpful, follow-up HOMEWORK:Go to these passages, write them down AND memorize a few verses that stand out to you - write down the things God is asking you to start adding in to your communication equation.Ephesians 4Colossians 2Galatians 5Philippians 2ProverbsIt's passages like these that can help when we are in need of a communication reset. When you are not seeing the sum that you long for - loving your married life and seeing good days - you can always start here to subtract what needs to go and add what's missing.Support the showFor more marriage encouragement, visit: www.VowsToKeep.com | V2K Blog | Marriage Counseling | Insta | FBApple Podcast listener? Who are we? Why do we do what we do? Get to know Lindsay and Meghan in all their glory. LINKS:  Black is the New Red: THE place to have Canadian money conversations! www.facebook.com/groups/blackisthenewred  SHOUTOUT: Who is primarily responsible for managing the finances in your household? Do you keep separate bank accounts? What works well for you, and why? HOMEWORK: Go talk to someone about MONEY. If you don't like your family, friends, or neighbors today, talk to a pro, or jump into Lindsay's 9000+ member group for Canadian money conversation.    TL:DR Version Ep 1 - Intro:  Lindsay & Meghan host the Money Stuff with Moms podcast because they fully understand the #MomLife AND the importance of #adulting. They bring you no fluff, jargon-free (and hilarious) conversations about money to give you quick wins while you're sitting on the sidelines of your kid's ball game.  These no-nonsense Moms are seasoned professionals in the finance industry who will be the first to tell you that seasoned professionals are NOT always right. The thing about personal finances is that they're PERSONAL! As Meghan would say, it's a beautifully annoying cliche.  Meghan is a Certified Financial Planner with an HBcomm finance degree, but her real super power is being able to translate all the technical jargon into step-by-step REAL talk.  Lindsay is an Accredited Financial Counselor with a STRONG opinion that Moms are SUPERHUMAN. They've got the brains to conquer whatever they put their mind to, but let's be real, with everything on their plates… they gotta ration their bandwidth and be choosy about where they spend their time and energy.  Money Stuff for Moms was created to bridge the gap between the super technical in depth financial literature and clipping coupons to save a buck. We know that Moms want more than Pinterest hacks, but don't have time to analyze the complexities of the IFRS9. Moms work too dang hard to feel like they're living paycheque to paycheque.  It's an IMPOSSIBLE expectation to think that one person can be responsible for their tiny human's daily routine, household chores, family fun day planning,  vet appointment, scheduling home maintenance, attending the parent teacher conference, pruning the garden, visiting your mom, going to work…. AND be an expert in managing account structures, budgeting, and investing. Moms can do ANYTHING… but they cannot do EVERYTHING. Meghan and Lindsay are here to help. Both Lindsay and Meghan have noticed that over the past couple of decades, there has been a pendulum swing when it comes to who is managing the day to day finances in the household. If we go back in time to Lindsay & Meghan's grandparents' prime, it was almost always the man who paid the bills, kept track of the insurance policies, and had the mortgage details ironed out. Today, women are wearing the “Chief Financial Officer” caps in their homes. Why is that? “F THE PATRIARCHY!!!!!” is one idea. (We joke, but is there truth to women asserting their financial independence by ensuring they have a strong grasp on their family's financial situation?)  Maybe women are just better at it. Organization and multi-tasking are stereotypical PINK strengths. And since there are SO many more things to remember this day in age, maybe men just feel better about their spouses dealing with it. (Back in the day, you had one paycheque, which you had to walk to your physical bank to cash, and you paid your handful of bills. Today, we have a bazillion options for banking, investing, and insurance. We have side hustles on top of our regular 9-5's. And let's not even talk about the list of bills (how many subscription services do YOU have, Mama?)  How do things work in your household? Who does the majority of the financial chores? Do you have separate bank accounts? What works well for you, and why? Your input to the conversation has incredible VALUE… because when we can all DO BETTER if we KNOW BETTER. Knowing your money personality is a gamechanger when it comes to managing your finances. And can be VERY helpful if you have a partner who is very different than you so that you can have a plan on so you can both get on the same page with your money.   LINKS:  What's your money personality type? Find out here! https://porterouge.co/colour  HOMEWORK: Go take the quiz to figure out your own personality type, and if you have a partner, make a guess as to theirs! You'll find some helpful resources for communicating with your partner after you take the quiz.    HOW TO GET IN TOUCH:Join in the conversation with 9000+ other Canadians (and finance industry pros) in Black is the New Red: www.facebook.com/groups/blackisthenewred DM Lindsay @ www.facebook.com/lindsayplumbmoneycoach  DM Meghan @ https://www.facebook.com/porterougeco  TL:DR Version  00:00:52  When onboarding my clients, I have them take a personality quiz which assigns them a colour (Gold, Green, Blue, or Orange.) I will customize my service to them based on this quiz, so that they get the most benefit from our time together. Today, I'm going to give you all a brief summary of each colour… AND I am going to guess which colour Lindsay is! (she took the quiz, but hasn't told me the results.) 00:02:20  GREEN:  These are the people who will debate you even if they agree with you. They will challenge you. They want to know every scenario. They LOVE spreadsheets. They have analytical minds. They tend to be engineers and process managers. They value knowledge and confidence. They love information. They struggle with analysis paralysis (decision making!)  00:03:28 ORANGE: These are our  entrepreneurs. They are people who really value freedom and variety. They'll have multiple projects on the go (but might not finish them all). They're great problem solvers. They're good at responding to emergencies. They are open and non judgmental. They value action. They are not the type to sit down and analyze a spreadsheet. That would be torture. They're FUN. 00:04:37  GOLD: (this is my colour) They are very organized. They're planners. They really value tradition. They like things that are very practical. They like checklists. They can be very rigid and predictable. They like structure and efficiency. They can forget to relax and have fun.  00:05:38  BLUE: They really value humans. They have a concern for others. They are really good at giving praise and encouragement. They have really good intuition. Many nurses, HR personnel, or first responders are blue. Blue's have a hard time saying no. They can take on too much. They don't do well with dishonest or blunt communication. They struggle with unrealistic expectations. 00:06:32  Meghan predicts that Lindsay is an ORANGE… but it turns out that Lindsay is a GOLD. 00:07:30 It's not surprising that Lindsay scored as a GOLD in retrospect, because she has created systems to manage money that are very organized, efficient, and structured. The reason she NEEDS these systems is because she naturally procrastinates and is messy! And that's OK! Most people actually are a combination of two colours, and your scores for each colour can be very close to one another, or tied!  00:09:33 We all experience different seasons of life and can only fit so many things at the top of our priority list… so maybe you feel like you WANT to be a super organized person, but at this phase in life, you need to turn the other cheek. 00:10:45  Knowing your personality type will help you understand how you can manage your finances in the way that is best for YOU. Why would you commit to tracking every single thing that goes out of your bank account for the next three months if that task is overwhelming and is going to drive you crazy? No! There is another way, and there is certainly another way that will suit you better.  00:15:38  Learning to communicate with a partner who has a very different personality type can be challenging, especially if one person is the day to day money manager of the home (which is very typical.) Everyone wants money management to be a team sport, but in reality, it's usually one person who manages most of it. Figuring out the best way to communicate with each other alleviates SO much stress when it comes to those heavy money conversations.

Think back to the beginning of the year. Remember that fresh new year that was full of promises? Even if you don't set beginning-of-the-year goals, this episode will give you some clues as to why you may not be reaching the goals you want to achieve yearly. If you feel dread when you think about August already here and how you only have a few months left this year, this episode is for you.  Two main reasons we struggle with achieving our goals are identity attachment and goal attachment. I break these concepts down and share an example of how these principles prevented me from reaching my fitness goals. I also share homework that will help all of us break these bad habits and get off of the hamster wheel.  Episode Highlights:  [01:36] Think back to January of this year. Even if you didn't make a lot of goals and resolutions, you probably thought of the new year as a fresh start. [03:43] Let's consider something that you probably haven't thought of. The two main reasons we struggle with achieving goals that we set are 1. identity attachment and 2. goal attachment. [04:15] Identity attachment is being attached to the way you behave and the outcomes you have and possibly even the struggle. [04:41] Pain becomes unconscious when it's part of the identity that you have adapted. [06:45] If you slowly lean into the thing that you want to do, it becomes who you are.  [08:17] I was attached to a woman who is trying to lose weight. I was attached to good enough.  [09:02] If you tell yourself that good enough is fine, you have no incentive to strive for excellence. [09:47] How do you know that you're addicted to an identity that isn't serving you? [12:38] I don't want to be a woman who is trying. There is nothing dangerous about trying. [12:52] The second reason we don't reach our goals is because we're attached to reaching the goal and achieving the outcome versus being the woman who is committed to reaching her goal. [13:09] You're attached to your goal when you're thinking that reaching it or not reaching it says something about you. [14:48] Commitment is when you can face down the process of reaching your goal knowing that there will be parts that are hard and parts that are amazing. [15:05] Homework: Go through an identity breakup. Spend some time grieving the loss of who you used to be. Make notes of all the actions you've taken as part of being her. Recognize mistakes. It's already been a long day and homework is looming over you. How do you make it a time of connection instead of a time of conflict? In this episode I answer a listener's questions about supporting her children with homework. Should a child be able to do homework independently or with the support of an adult? Should one or both parents have responsibility for homework? If a child does their homework at an after schools club, what is the role for parents? How much homework should kids be doing a day? When? When should you stop if it's causing stress? Kids bring home all their stresses from the day. They hold it all in all day and then often it tips out when they get home. Adults bring their beliefs, worries, fears and anxieties about school work to the table too. Everyone is tired after a long day. The important thing to remember is that learning simply can't happen when a child is feeling stressed. Many experts agree that homework hasn't been found to be helpful to learning at primary school age So to create the conditions for learning and getting homework done, the focus needs to be on connection - make it a time to connect. Make sure your child has a rest first, is fed, has spent some time connecting with you before you launch into homework. Playful approaches to homework can really help too. Thanks for joining me. "_Bob__, I'm reaching out to all of my friends and clients this week just to share some market news with you so you stay informed. I'm sure you've noticed that there aren't many For Sale signs around right now.  This means that a great house like yours typically is selling very quickly and not  just for top dollar but in many cases well over top dollar. Your neighborhood is selling for x% higher than last year and typically in less than _x_ days. What do you think about that? (listen to answer) So now that you know that we could likely get at least __ for your home, what does that do to your plans? / Would you like me to prepare a market analysis to see what you could expect to net in today's market?" Note: Even if they say they're never moving, you can still ask who do they know who could use your help buying or selling real estate? Note: If they say the predictable: 'Well, that'd be great but where would I move to?'...move on to Part 2 of the script. "That's a great question and it's certainly on everyone's minds lately. Let's look at a variety of options and see which might be the most comfortable for you... A lot of people are buying first and then selling. With super low interest rates and the likelihood of your home selling as soon as we get it on the market, many people are just buying first, closing and then selling the old home.  Some people are choosing to build and then sell. Building buys you time and you get a brand new house with nothing to repair. I've had a few clients instruct me to get them the most for their home and then they plan to travel for 6 months to a year. One of them is trying out a different vacation rental in 4 different cities they're considering moving to. They're really enjoying the adventure. Some of my clients are moving to their own vacation rental or to their own normal rental home so they have time to look around at their options.  A few people have cashed out and moved in with family for the time being. They liked option of taking some time to look around. 2 of my clients have cashed out and moved into luxury rental units until they decide what's next for them. Another couple of clients have purchased homes to rehab so they can again take advantage of higher prices and make even more money during this unprecedented time. Either way, everyone seems to want to take advantage of their increased values., so what are you thinking as I tell you all of this? What does this do to your plans?" Remember we have Live Transcripts!! 04:25 - 09:13 - fish quote (Hafiz) from a few weeks ago. Continuing with the fish quote and expanding on it. Quoting a lab experiment where scientists bred a fish to not school. Why would they do that? So, the takeaway is…Be the fish that doesn’t school -- DO YOUR OWN THANG! (For this week) 09:14 - 11:04 - tissue analogy. Yuk. “Not today, thank you” Anytime some tries to give you something you don’t want, you have the POWER to say “No, thank you”. Goes back to the talk last week about the default setting to take abuse. But we DO have the ability to say “No, thank you” 11:05 - 13:19 - MLK Jr quotes (acknowledging MLK Jr Day) “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” MLK Jr. Another quote “ Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction ... The chain reaction of evil - hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars - must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation. (1963)” “A fifth point concerning nonviolent resistance is that it avoids not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. The nonviolent resister not only refuses to shoot his opponent but he also refuses to hate him. (1958)” 13:20 - 28:44 - Change matrix. “Justice is what love looks like in public. Intimacy is what love looks like in private.” Change and live your life with love. 28:45 - 29:35 - Betsy played part of a song called “Give yourself to Love” 29:36 - 30:49 - Back to the change matrix. Give yourself to love. This world is not feeling very loving right now. When we talk about us vs them, we’re increasing the problem. 30:50 - 31:09 - Announcement: Chat with Larry Podcasts #1 here! https://rotb.org/chats/ 31:10 - 46:50 - R.A.U.R.! - To love someone is to start by Recognizing them. Acceptance. Understanding. Response. HOMEWORK: Go out and be more loving. Breakout: what would be the top 2 strangest things to explain to your ancestors in the past? - posted in the chat. Comes back to the MLK Jr quote: Hate is too great a burden to bear…can we give up the hate? If the basis of love is to recognize people, how can we go out this stressful week and not hate? Audrey Lorde quote: “For the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house. They may allow us to temporarily beat him at his own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change.” John Lennon quote: “When it gets down to having to use violence, then you are playing the system’s game. The establishment will irritate you: pull your beard, flick your face to make you fight. Because once they’ve got you violent, then they know how to handle you. The only thing they don’t know how to handle is non-violence and humour.” Martha Beck quote: “The repercussions of one person living in stubborn gladness are incalculable.” - DON’T TAKE THE BAIT. Go back to Stubborn gladness. 46:51 - 50:00 - Announcements: ETSY SHOP Reflections on Exodus https://www.etsy.com/listing/79094713... Homesteading. It’s a term that’s associated with the expansion of the United States in the 1800’s but a new generation of self-reliant entrepreneurs has adopted the term and lifestyle and turned it into an attractive option for a broad number of people who are willing to work hard towards providing for themselves and their families.  With the current pandemic, it’s become increasingly apparent how reliant our society has become on outside food, resources, and essential items that we need and want everyday. It’s exposed weaknesses in our food and other supply chains that are ultimately felt on an individual level.  Today’s instructor, Anne Briggs of Anne of All Trades, has been working for years towards building a lifestyle of self-sufficiency and has a big head start on the rest of us. She started her own homestead in Seattle years ago and has recently moved to the Nashville area where she’s starting from scratch with a new homesteading project.  From gardening to raising livestock, woodworking to blacksmithing, Anne has learned on the fly with a fearless do-it-yourself attitude that has made her not only a successful homesteader, but also a social media sensation who shares her can-do attitude with her large following.  By the end of this class you’ll have an idea of what it takes to create your own homestead, how you can identify things around your yard that you could add to your diet, and how you can start with some small changes to create a more self-sufficient lifestyle.  Class is in session.  Gardening isn’t as hard as you think! Anne mentioned: Raised beds, hugelkultur and planting simple beds with wood chips as examples of easy gardening. Check out the tutorials on her site. Check out this app to identify plants: Picture This Can you afford to homestead? Anne makes sure every investment pays for itself. Some things she does to offset costs is participating in a heard-share, selling eggs and using social media for extra income. Have a tiny space? You can do so much with a balcony or window sill. Grow plants on your kitchen counter! Get involved in your local CSA’s, visit farmers markets and join your local homesteading and gardening groups on Facebook. If you’ve ever peeked into a restaurant kitchen, you’ll notice a choreographed chaos. Chefs work as a team to move as efficiently as possible- using tricks they’ve acquired from years of practice. Today we’re talking to celebrity chef, Stuart O’Keeffe, to find out if choices in our kitchen layout and a few recommended tools can create a restaurant-worthy flow in our home kitchens. Stuart O’Keeffe is an accomplished celebrity and professional chef known for his healthy yet hearty meals. He first explored his passion for food while cooking alongside his mother in his native Ireland, then honed that passion into skill at the Dublin Institute of Technology where he earned a degree in Culinary Arts.  Chef Stuart has been trained around the world, cutting his teeth in Napa Valley and Bordeaux, France—both highly competitive culinary hot spots—before moving to Los Angeles. There, he works with some of the biggest names in Hollywood and has been seen on the NBC primetime series Food Fighters and OWN’s Home Made Simple. He has also starred in The Home Channel’s Stuart’s Kitchen, shot and produced in Ireland.  A Food Network darling, Chef Stuart has served as a judge on Chopped, starred in Private Chefs of Beverly Hills, and been featured on hit shows like Valerie’s Home Cooking. He can currently be seen co-hosting his new show Let’s Eat on the network and on QVC representing Circulon Cookware.  By the end of this class you’ll have ideas for creating restaurant-level efficiency in your home, some inside knowledge of the best tools for the job and inspiration to get cooking with your family. How can people bring a restaurant level of efficiency to their home kitchen? Any tips on layout or flow? Stuart loves a kitchen where the stovetop is on the island looking out, so you can converse while you're cooking. Stand in your space and imagine yourself cooking, and think about what's in reach. The magic triangle's a great place to start. Counter space is the biggest factor! If you have the option, get as much as possible. What are some knives you recommend? How often do you sharpen? Chef loves a company called Knife Aid. You can send your knives away and have them sharpened. You should be doing it at least twice a year. Chef likes Miyabi knives. What are a handful of kitchen essentials every home owner should have? Dutch oven, cast iron pan & a non-stick pan. Chef LOVES this Chop Stir. A good set of knives Are there any new appliances on your radar?  The Instant Pot and Air Fryer are great! What are some of your tips for feeding a crowd/entertaining in a small space? Keep it simple! A charcuterie board. A one pot meal like chili or short ribs +mashed potato. Stews, paella, anything where everyone can just scoop out of a big pot! What are your favorite pans? Cast iron Circulon Cookware What are some professional chef hacks everyone should know? Salt meat before putting in the pan, and pepper after. Always have a damp cloth under the cutting board so it doesn't slip. To keep your workspace clean- use the light system. If it's dirty stop, asses/slow down/clean up and GO! Repeat that cycle. If you're cutting vegetables to roast, have your roasting pans heating in the oven while you chop and then add them to the warm pan instead of a cold one. How can we get our kids excited about being in the kitchen? Let them chop vegetables or hold the whisk! Find the safe tasks and let them help! Your first cookbook is called The Quick Six Fix, which focuses on simple recipes with great ingredients. What are some items everyone should have in their pantry/kitchen at all times? Build a spice collection. San Marzano canned tomatoes Right Rice Oils Salt/Pepper Tomato sauce Frozen shrimp Homework: Go through all the cabinets in your kitchen and start organizing/make space. Start building your kitchen! Get good items and build slowly. It will spark your joy for cooking. Find a recipe, go shopping and then cook it!  1-31-19 FORWARD Momentum Takes Radical Obedience - Dionne Jackson January Forward Series   Genesis 17 New King James Version (NKJV) The Sign of the Covenant 17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am [a]Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. 2 And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.” 3 Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying: 4 “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of [b]many nations. 5 No longer shall your name be called [c]Abram, but your name shall be [d]Abraham; for I have made you a father of [e]many nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. 7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you. 8 Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in[f] which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.” 9 And God said to Abraham: “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you. 12 He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant. 13 He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.” 15 Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but [g]Sarah shall be her name. 16 And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.” 17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” 18 And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!” 19 Then God said: “No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set time next year.” 22 Then He finished talking with him, and God went up from Abraham. 23 So Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very same day, as God had said to him. 24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 That very same day Abraham was circumcised, and his son Ishmael; 27 and all the men of his house, born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him. Princess —————————————————————— Genesis 18 New King James Version (NKJV) The Son of Promise 18 Then the Lord appeared to him by [a]the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day. 2 So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground, 3 and said, “My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant. 4 Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. 5 And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, inasmuch as you have come to your servant.” They said, “Do as you have said.” 6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quickly, make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes.” 7 And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it. 8 So he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree as they ate. 9 Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” So he said, “Here, in the tent.” 10 And He said, “I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son.” (Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.) 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age; and [b]Sarah had passed the age of childbearing. 12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” 13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?' 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.” 15 But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh!”   Footnotes: Genesis 18:1 Heb. Alon Mamre Genesis 18:11 Lit. the manner of women had ceased to be with Sarah ———————————————————————————————— Notes: There is absolutely nothing you can do to change the things that God has said about you and who you are.  There are certain things God is trying to get into your hands but it is going to take radical obedience for you to receive it.  Have there ever been moments or times when you made decisions where the outcome didn't appear to be beneficial? Homework: Go back into your thought process or journal and review what God has said to you. There are instructions that he has given you so that you can stop being on the merry-go-round so that you can move forward and help others move forward by seeing your example. It is time to break the cycle and move forward by following God's instructions to receive his perfect system for you to be blessed.

We then introduce a clip from Dr. Ellen Kreidman who discusses how having a loving relationship with your spouse is the best gift you can give your kids. This means you have to make the effort to spend time together. We also discuss Dr. Ellen's date night formula for a successful relationship. As per her advice, the homework is to go out on date with your significant other. Get dressed up, plan it, and make it special. We then close the episode with a quote that also confirms how important the relationship of the parents is and how the kids see that. If you want them to be in a healthy relationship, you must model that behavior. We start off this episode with Stuff to Do.  An idea is to include your kids when you are cooking.  They love to help and be involved.  We then answer an email with a listener asking about what to do when bringing kids to a restaurant.  We then dive into SuperCharge where we discuss www.dadgear.com. Scripture: James 3: 1-12 Homework: Go where you are weak. If you are a natural talker, practice deep listening. If you are a quiet listener, practice unlocking the power of speech. Whichever practice you take on this week, do it with this question in mind, "What is the suffering of the person with whom I am speaking?" Whether that phrase allows you to hear harsh language or tell a good joke, bring that compassion to your listening or speaking. Have a great week!

We're now going to have a few episodes focusing on the lens of proximity—specifically, how close you are to a character. Today, we're talking about first person. First person seems like it would be one of the most natural forms of storytelling, because it's the one we use when talking about our own actions. But how do we use first person effectively? How close we are to the character and how much we get to know of their motivation and reaction can be controlled through interiority and embodiment. This often ends up defining the POV that we use in our stories. We'll talk about which tools are specific to first person, as well as flag pitfalls to watch out for.Homework: Go pick up a book that you love. Find a scene that you think is really great that is not in first person. Then, rewrite that scene in first person from the POV of a character in the scene. P.S.
