Career success, life success – you want them, but here's the thing, they will remain ever elusive until you know your aptitudes. Don't bolt! We know that word sounds like jargon. Or like pure academic BS. But aptitudes are real, and you have very specific ones, and knowing what they are can and will change your life. Take it from Suzy, who in this week's gasp-worthy pod (yes, just wait and see) tells us how she learned that very lesson the hard way. Want more Becoming You? The Aptitudes of Grace Ridiculous Grace April 7, 2024 We are beginning a new sermon series this Sunday that we're calling Ridiculous Grace. If you watch the evening news or scroll through social media, you know we live in a very narcissistic, me-first, entitled culture. The messages all around us tell us we deserve more, better, and faster. Grace is in extremely short supply and it has nothing to do with supply chain issues. Perhaps we're lacking in grace because we've forgotten or maybe, never understood what grace really is, or how desperately we need it, but how undeserving we are of it. And if we don't understand it, it's difficult to truly receive it and even harder to give to others. ----------------------------------- TAKE YOUR NEXT STEP ---------------------------------- Give Online: https://www.simplechurchgiving.net/App/Giving/dsf Message Notes: https://www.dayspringfellowship.com/sermons Like, comment & subscribe to stay updated!

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Aptitudes for AI governance work, published by Sam Clarke on June 14, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I outline 8 “aptitudes” for AI governance work. For each, I give examples of existing work that draws on the aptitude, and a more detailed breakdown of the skills I think are useful for excelling at the aptitude. How this might be helpful: For orienting to the kinds of work you might be best suited to For thinking through your skill gaps for those kinds of work Offering an abstraction which might help those thinking about field-building/talent pipeline strategy Epistemic status: I've spent ~3 years doing full-time AI governance work. Of that, I spent ~6 months FTE working on questions related to the AI governance talent pipeline, with GovAI. My work has mostly been fairly foundational research—so my views about aptitudes for research-y work (i.e. the first four aptitudes in this post) are more confident than for more applied or practical work (i.e. the latter three aptitudes in this post). I've spent ~5 hours talking with people hiring in AI governance about the talent needs they have. See this post for a write-up of that work. I've spent many more hours talking with AI governance researchers about their work (not focused specifically on talent needs). This post should be read as just one framework that might help you orient to AI governance work, rather than as making strong claims about which skills are most useful. Some AI governance-relevant aptitudes Macrostrategy What this is: investigating foundational topics that bear on more applied or concrete AI governance questions. Some key characteristics of this kind of work include: The questions are often not neatly scoped, such that generating or clarifying questions is part of the work. It involves balancing an unusually wide or open-ended range of considerations. A high level of abstraction is involved in reasoning. The methodology is often not very clear, such that you can't just plug-and-play with some standard methodology from a particular field. Examples: Descriptive work on estimating certain ‘key variables' E.g. reports on AI timelines and takeoff speeds. Prescriptive work on what ‘intermediate goals' to aim for E.g. analysis of the impact of US govt 2022 export controls. Conceptual work on developing frameworks, taxonomies, models, etc. that could be useful for structuring future analysis E.g. The Vulnerable World Hypothesis. Useful skills: Generating, structuring, and weighing considerations. Being able to generate lots of different considerations for a given question and weigh up these considerations appropriately. For example, there are a lot of considerations that bear on the question “Would it reduce AI risk if the US government enacted antitrust regulation that prevents big tech companies from buying AI startups?” Some examples of considerations are: “How much could this accelerate or slow down AI progress?”, “How much could this increase or decrease Western AI leadership relative to China?”, “How much harder or easier would this make it for the US government to enact safety-focused regulations?” “How would this affect the likelihood that a given company (e.g., Alphabet) plays a leading role in transformative AI development?” etc. Each of these considerations is also linked to various other considerations. For instance, the consideration about the pace of AI progress links to the higher-level consideration “How does the pace of AI progress affect the level of AI risk?” and the lower-level consideration “How does market structure affect the pace of AI progress?” That lower-level consideration can then be linked to even lower levels, like “What are the respective roles of compute-scaling and new ideas in driving AI progress?” and “Would spreading researchers out across a larger number of startups ...

On today's show, we discuss how average employees are impacting your profitability. Danielle Mulvey is a former flight attendant-turned-entrepreneur who has cracked the code on recruiting and retaining what she refers to as “5-Star Employees”: game-changing, dedicated, hardworking people who make big plays and get real, consistent results. Never one to settle for average, Danielle has scaled her several companies to over $50 million in annual revenue while spending less than 10 hours each week overseeing their operations. Danielle's own team of trusted 5-Star Employees provides her with the freedom to spend the rest of her workweek guiding other entrepreneurs through podcasting, workshops, and community curating. Key Takeaways: 5-star employees represent the top 15% of the available talent in the market Recruiting and hiring effectively is key to success in your company. Cast a wide net. You'll need to review a lot of applicants. Create opportunities to test talent, similar to football training camp. One option is inviting the finalist candidates to do paid "shadow days." 5 Star Employee Rating SystemAlignment with core values This is the secret sauce to your organization. It's almost like being able to clone yourself if you can have an entire team of people that share your core values.11 universal qualities Assessing potential and mindset/skillset to do the job These are things such as ability to learn, ability to be limber, and ability to listen. Limberness and ability to listen are red flag qualities. They either have them or they don't, and you don't want them if they don't. Some of the other qualities could be improved by opportunity or coaching. 3x return on payroll Every employee should be bringing a 3x return on your investment in them. Often this is measured in how much they are taking off the plate of another employee/owner that has a higher billable rate. Success metrics for key responsibilities Quantify what success means - the expectations should have a measurement attached for the employee's 3-5 key responsibilities. Examples would be referrals, client feedback survey results, claims processed, etc Aptitudes and Skills Employees need to show they can do the job. Determine 9-13 aptitudes/skills that you can test candidates on. How do the 1,2,3-star employees impact profitability?Bloated payroll. A 5-star employee does the work of 2 or 3 lower star employees. Morale killer. 5-star employees love what they do. They treat the job as a craft, not a career. Anything less than that brings down the team. What should you do if you find yourself with a 1,2,3-star employee?Transition them to alumni status. If it's not a good fit for them, they will likely be happier somewhere else. These employees will also begin to cause resentment in your 5-star employees if they stay and under-perform. In this episode of THE Journal Insider podcast, host and editor Kristal Kuykendall talks with YouScience Chief Operating Officer Jeri Larsen about how their Discovery aptitude assessment platform works and why it helps both educators and students, and Paula Chilton from Williamson County Schools in Tennessee shares details about the district's implementation of YouScience Discovery platform and the impact it's had there. Paula explains how her district has embraced the insights from Discovery assessments to help middle and high school students "discover" their aptitudes and then take ownership of their learning and their futures by more closely connecting their schoolwork to their skills and aspirations. NOTE: This episode includes a few minutes of video, where Larsen demonstrates the YouScience Discovery assessment results and platform. Listen and watch on YouTube (https://youtu.be/8_Wy8L4oVwU) to see what she is talking about! WHY THIS MATTERS: An enormous study published in July by student aptitude and career guidance platform YouScience analyzed almost a quarter-million Discovery aptitude assessments taken last year by high-schoolers nationwide. It's easy to see how this kind of data is deeply relevant to the larger curriculum goals of K–12 schools and also to the individual choices that students are asked to begin making as early as ninth grade, as they choose electives throughout high school. The analysis revealed that students have the innate abilities to excel in today's in-demand jobs but often lack interest in those fields, either because they've not been exposed to such career options or had no idea they possessed aptitudes in those fields. The findings of aptitude assessments are helpful both at the upper levels of curriculum decision-making and at the granular level, in classrooms with students. Educators and guidance counselors can see the gaps in so-called “career exposure” — where students have innate aptitudes but no career interest indicates they may need more information about career possibilities — and they help schools better tailor each student's courses in high school to the career paths they are both suited for and interested in.

Discover your child's strengths & aptitudes and how they will help you uncover your child's dream jobs. Learn more about Chelsea at www.chelsea-whitaker.com and you can check out her online, on-demand course, The Parent's Guide to Discovering Your Child's Dream Job at: https://chelsea-whitaker.teachable.com/p/discovering-your-childs-dream-job/ Chelsea: Hi everyone. I'm Chelsea Whitaker and I'm here with my sister, Nicole, who is a lawyer and a successful business owner. And today we're going to talk about the most effective way to identify your child's strengths and aptitudes. Nicole: Chelsea, why is this so important to identify your child's strengths and attitudes? How does that relate to finding their dream job? Chelsea: It's important that you discover what your child is good at, because that's going to keep them motivated to continue down that path. Usually when you're passionate about something, you're also good at it and you get good feedback from other people and internally just knowing that you're doing a good job and that's going to keep you on that path to success. Nicole: Right? The jobs going to be easier for them, if they're naturally good at it... Chelsea: Right. Nicole: So, can you give me an example of how someone's strengths and aptitudes relate to the type of dream jobs that they might have with their potential dream jobs? Chelsea: Sure. The person that comes to my mind is our mom. Now mom is actually a customer service rep, and now she's a gas dispatcher at BGE... Nicole: Our local electric utility, right? Chelsea: Right. But I really think if she were to do it all over again, thinking about her strengths, how outgoing she is, how much she cares for other people and just her wanting to hear other people's stories. I really think that she could be in an advocacy or caregiving profession such as working at a nursing home, being an activities director, being a caregiver or social worker, or even a cruise director. She really likes to listen to other people. She's a strong advocate. She's an excellent listener. And she's able to identify and manage her emotions as well as other people's emotions.
