Today hosts Liz Hale and Dave Schramm talk with Arlene Pellicane, an author and speaker specializing in marriage and parenting. As the national spokesperson for National Marriage Week, Arlene shares insightful tips for nurturing a strong marital connection. The discussion emphasizes daily connections, weekly date nights, and the significance of prioritizing marriage in today's world. About Arlene Pellicane Arlene Pellicane is the National Spokesperson for National Marriage Week. She's a topmarriage and parenting author and speaker, and has appeared on several media outletslike the Today Show, Wall Street Journal, Focus on the Family, Fox & Friends, TLC’sHome Made Simple, FamilyLife Today, and The 700 Club. She’s also the host of theHappy Home podcast and the author of several books including 31 Days to a HappyHusband, and 31 Days to Becoming a Happier Wife. She is married to James, herhusband of more than 25 years, and they have three children - Ethan, Noelle and Lucy. Insights: Arlene: the importance of having a service-oriented attitude in marriage, one thatasks, "What can I do for you?" rather than "What can you do for me?" By focusing on small acts of kindness, like bringing a glass of water or leaving a loving note, you can demonstrate love and commitment to your spouse. This approach leads to an active and controllable part in the relationship, fostering appreciation and reciprocation from your partner. Arlene underscores the need to consistently prioritize your spouse's needs and to take the initiative in showing care and service. She expresses hope that listeners will recognize the value in their marriages, take active steps to cherish them, and thereby inspire future generations to value the institution of marriage Dave appreciates Arlene's insights on maintaining an outward mindset and the importance of being intentional in marriage. He reflects on his parents' impressive 58-year marriage, recognizing it as a model for what he strives to achieve in his own family life. With his spouse and their four children, they make a concerted effort to show the importance of their marriage. They prioritize their relationship, with regular date nights, emphasizing to their children that their partnership is a priority. Dave acknowledges the need for planning and intentionality to prevent drifting apart in marriage, valuing daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly connections. Liz appreciates the concept that individuals can often get caught up in a mindset of expecting more from their partners without recognizing their own contributions. In her marriage therapy sessions, she frequently observes that when a person perceives they're not receiving enough from their partner, it's typically reflective of not giving enough themselves. This realization is a good foundation for addressing marital issues. Liz also highlights the decline in marriage rates from previous generations to millennials, and says that aunts, uncles, and parents bear a significant responsibility to promote the value of marriage. She stresses that it is crucial for them to model strong marriages themselves, to reinforce the positive message about marriage. We are in the middle of a short series on detoxing. Today, we are talking about detoxing from the digital world. Don't worry, this is not a guilt-ridden episode on why all digital devices are bad and from the pit of hell. But it is timely as you consider what you are buying for your kids during the holiday season and as you think ahead about setting new healthy rhythms in your home for next year. We are personally still detoxing from habits we formed during the pandemic - hours of hallmark christmas movies, netflix series and yes, reruns of Survivor. So, no judgment from us. However, in all reality, in this digital age, children, with developing brains, are spending more time interacting with screens than ever before. There is less time playing outside, reading a book, or interacting with family. We have lost basic things like looking each other in the eye while we talk, and finishing a conversation about our days before we hit the pillow. Though technology has its benefits, it also has its harms. So we want to shore up some of our thinking and habits. Arlene Pellican is a speaker, author and podcaster. Her latest book, Screen Kids: 5 Relational Skills Every Child Needs in a Tech-Driven World was co-authored with Gary Chapman. She's been honored to speak, write books (translated into over 10 languages), and appear on several media outlets like the Today Show, Wall Street Journal, Focus on the Family, Fox & Friends, TLC's Home Made Simple, FamilyLife Today, and The 700 Club. In one of the most raw, honest episodes of TGAWG yet, I talk with TV personality, interior designer and life stylist Lauren Makk. I met Lauren back in 2015 when I was working on a daytime syndicated TV show called Fablife. Lauren, one of the co-hosts and resident interior designer, stood out to me at the time as someone who is very much, "what you see is what you get," something I definitely admire, especially in that industry. Six plus years later, she's still that way. In this episode, Lauren shares:Her journey to sobriety, complete with twists and turns. What life looked like when she was drinking. Carmen's Demo Reel See Carmen in action here: https://youtu.be/Yd-iXM8dk-Y Gratitude A recurring theme from many survivors is gratitude. Many of us, while we don't recommend the stroke experience, feel a sense of gratitude for the life we have now. I'm one of them. Carmen talks about how grateful she is for her life today. Neuro Nerd Joe Borges expressed that sentiment, too. As did Kristen Aguirre and Vince Holland among others. I get that not everyone will feel that way. Sometimes the particular deficits we are left with make that harder. And some people don't make it. We may be grateful because we realize things could have been so much worse. But many times stroke makes us reassess our life. It suddenly interrupts normal life. Everything has to stop, whether we want it to or not. And that interruption isn't just about a week off. It can be months or years. And that interruption is a time to stop and rethink what we are doing. That's interruption can be something we are grateful for. It makes us stop and make decisions about how we want to live our lives going forward. While I might like to see all my deficits go away tomorrow, I wouldn't want to not have had this experience. It's made me who I am today. And it's brought amazing people into my life. But again, I don't recommended having a stroke. While Carmen and I and others had to be forced into this shift, if you haven't had a stroke, you can still take a break and rethink your priorities to make sure they really are bringing value into your life. And take some time to put together your own gratitude practice to recognize the things that bring value to your life. Waukesha, WI Waukesha, WI is Carmen's home town. With a population of roughly 70,000 people, it's just outside Milwaukee, and a couple hours away from Chicago. And the town has really embraced Carmen. She's working on civic projects, and the love she has for the community really comes through in our conversation. Art and Stroke Carmen talks about the change to her art since her stroke. Her description sounds more disciplined and focused that before. Before her stroke, she described her art as embodying the idea of catharsis -- a building and building until it bursts through. Since her stroke, it seems less chaotic. More refined, focused, and discipline. Here's an article about the interview Carmen did just before her stroke. In addition to the changes brought on by our disabilities, stroke can affect us in other ways. I find my writing to be more focused now. But the example that really jumps out at me is the conversation I had with Seth Shearer a couple years back. You can listen to that conversation at http://Strokecast.com/Seth Seth is a Seattle artist. After his stroke, his art changed dramatically. The change was so dramatic it felt like a different person painted it. Seth began to paint under his middle name of Ian because of the difference. The things we want to say and how we want to say them are influenced not just by the outside world, but by how we perceive the outside world. Our senses provide raw data, but our brains create meaning from that data. And when our brains change, the way they create that meaning also changes. Our ability to then express that meaning is impacted by how our brains can use our bodies, by how we can focus on a thing, and by the volume of mental resources we can bring to bear on bear on the project. And that can be a beautiful thing. Aneurysm Basics An aneurysm is an often misunderstood medical condition. The general public thinks it's when the brain just starts bleeding catastrophically. And that's close, but not quite right. In reality an aneurysm is a weak spot or bubble in the side of a blood vessel or at a spot where the blood vessels divide. As long as the aneurysm doesn't break, leak, or get too big, you can go your whole life with an aneurysm and never know it. Millions of people walk around with aneurysms in their brains and will never know. Carmen's aneurysms manifested for 10 years as migraines. That bulge in the wall of a vessel can cause problems and press against stuff it shouldn't. Remember, there's not a lot of extra space inside our skulls. They're pretty well packed. Unfortunately many folks don't get the scan that can show the aneurysm. You can't treat an aneurysm if you don't know it exists. If you do learn it exists, there are some amazing surgical procedures to treat it. Or if it's minor enough neurologists may suggest leaving it alone But sometimes they are weak enough that they break. And when they rupture and send blood coursing directly into the brain, the results are catastrophic. Many hemorrhagic strokes are caused by ruptured aneurysms and folks who survive are quite lucky. Motus Nova Motus Nova is a sponsor this week. I just started using the Motus Hand device. It's an air-powered, computer-controlled, robotic exoskeleton for my affected hand. It's a therapy tool, rather than an adaptive tool. One thing I really like about it is the way it collects data and scores my performance on its video games. It's sometimes hard to see the gains we make in therapy over time because they happen slowly. But the reports and data make it much easier to see improvements over time. I also learned after my first session that I have much less wrist extension than I thought. So now I know one more thing to specifically target. If you'd like to see if the Motus Hand or Motus Foot can help with your recovery, visit http://Strokecast.com/MotusNova and use the code Strokecast for 10% off your first month. Hack of the Week Clamps are an essential tool in woodworking. They give the carpenter and extra, super stable hand. You know who else can use an extra, super stable hand? Stroke survivors with limb weakness! A simple clamp is something you can use to hold a thing in place. Maybe that's a piece of timber. Maybe it's a cutting board. Maybe it's a piece of paper you're trying to sign. The variety of clamps available is mind boggling. The right one depends on what you want to do. You can find a bunch of different options on Amazon here.* Here's one in particular that seems one-hand friendly. I may need to pick up a few myself.* And of course, I'm still have a warm feeling for the traditional C-Clamps of my youth. You can find those here.* Explore some different options. And the next time you try something and think, "This would be a lot easier with two (or three or four) hands," make a mental note to look for a clamping solution. Links Where do we go from here? After Losing our beloved dog Koobeh earlier this year, we faced the challenge of explaining death and grief to our kids. When we started working on this season of the show we wanted to create an episode that will help parents who had to experience loss in front of their young children. We found Jesse Brune-Horan, a minister and a grief consultant who faced the worst of all - the loss of a child. In this episode we explore fear and grief, how to move through them and how to deal with our kids' facing them. Jesse Brune-Horan doesn't recommend pushing yourself through your grief. "We're inundated with self help things and material like that that people feel like they have to power through your enlightenment or your healing or whatever it is," Brune-Horan explains, "and sometimes it's not helpful." "I really encourage people to always take the most peaceful path in the moment, whatever that is for you. Sometimes it looks like not dealing with it, putting on your sweats and watching Netflix for the weekend and that's ok," he adds. Deal with your grief when you're ready to deal with it When going through grief and loss, some people experience relief when they are 'giving themselves permission' to be sad. To just stay in the sadness and cry for as long as they need. "When I work with people who are moving through grief there's like big, big piece of permission I give them, like, do your best in the moment, today, what's the most peaceful thing you can do today," Jesse explains. "And when we focus on peace, then whatever it is that's preventing us from feeling that peace will naturally arise. And if we're patient enough then we can sort of look at what's coming up in that moment and we get to choose, like am I ready to tackle that horse yet or am I letting it ride by for now. The good news is, and you have been through enough life to know that, if there's an issue that needs to be dealt with, then it eventually will be dealt with or [it will show up over and over again in your life] and you'll be miserable." "Be a Man" Jesse believes that we as dads should show our kids how we deal with our emotions - especially the 'bad' ones. "A lot of what we were told, what a man is supposed to be and how 'a man' supposed to act - toughening up, not showing emotion, not being sad and all that stuff," he says. "And now we know that it's all bullshit and unhealthy and doesn't really serve anybody. So to allow yourself to express emotion in front of your kid I think it's a brilliant beautiful thing and you should, and you should let them know that it's ok to be sad, it's ok to have these experiences, it's ok to grieve, show them how to grieve." "I think that's the key: the key is we teach through our demonstration. We show them what it is to be sad, what it is to be happy. We show them what healthy boundary is, we show them what love is, we show them what family is." Our Guest: Jesse Brune-Horan Founder and Spiritual Director, Active Love Ministries.Jesse is a celebrated spiritual teacher, writer, activist, and lifestyle expert with over 15 years in the field. He's the co-founder of Inspire Spiritual Community, a Los Angeles based Independent New Thought organization serving the LGBTQ+ community & allies. He served as Spiritual Director from 2013-2019. Since 2010, he's offered hundreds of teachings on spirituality, facilitated retreats, workshops, and group counseling. Jesse leads classes based on the teachings of Science Of Mind, A Course In Miracles, The Way Of Mastery and A Course Of Love. He offers meditation training, meets privately with clients as a spiritual coach, facilitates yearly healing retreats, and offers live teachings. He's a guest-teacher/presenter at various universities in Southern California. As a lifestyle expert, Jesse has co-starred on series for Bravo, The Food Network, and OWN. "I really encourage people to always take the most peaceful path in the moment, whatever that is for you. We show them what healthy boundary is, we show them what love is, we show them what family is." “I’ve always been a fighter. For some reason, I’ve always wanted to fight and prove that I was strong.”Laila AliHow do you find your path in the vast shadow cast by one of history's most accomplished and beloved humans? For Laila Ali, the daughter of late global icon and humanitarian Muhammad Ali (the 8th of his 9 children), it wasn't easy. It wasn't always pretty. But over time, she found her voice. Staked her claim in very the ring that propelled her father to god-like status. And transcended that shadow as a multi-faceted talent that honors her father and yet is hers alone.Although she was never an athlete growing up — and didn't take to the pugilistic arts until she was 18 — Laila would become the most successful female in the history of women’s boxing. A 4-time undefeated world champion, she racked up 24 wins, 21 knockouts and zero losses over the course of her storied career.Retirement was just the beginning. Today the mother of two is a fitness & wellness advocate, TV host, home chef, cookbook author, and founder of the Laila Ali Lifestyle Brand.A cultural icon in her own right, Laila currently hosts the Emmy Award Winning show Home Made Simple (which airs every Saturday on the Oprah Winfrey Network) and has appeared on everything from Celebrity Apprentice to Dancing With The Stars as well as Rachael Ray, Dr. Oz, Good Morning America and many other national media outlets. This is a conversation about the interior experience of growing up as a daughter of ‘The Greatest' — and the pressures and expectations that held. It's about growing up in a broken household. The troubled youth that followed. Getting arrested. Meeting her bottom in a juvenile detention home. And the journey that followed to recreate herself. It's about her often misunderstood career as a professional boxer. The entrepreneurism that propels her success. And the legacy she is dedicated to emulating. But more than anything, this is a conversation about mindset. The cultivation of self-belief required to become a champion. Letting go of other's expectations. Developing the courage to fail. And the tools required to make your unique impact on the world. You can watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the conversation streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.I had a ton of fun with Laila. PNR: This Old Marketing | Content Marketing with Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose
In episode 214 of #ThisOldMarketing, Joe and Robert discuss the death of journalism (through newspaper media) and how brands are missing an opportunity by not purchasing more newspaper properties. Procter & Gamble (P&G) is growing like crazy but spending less on advertising than ever before. The boys think they know the reason, including help from Home Made Simple. More B2B and B2C brands are investing in print magazines, including the likes of REI and Goose Island. Opportunity? And FIPP suggests that future growth lies in niche media and underserved international populations. In rants and raves, Joe raves iQiyi's push into Chinese vertical dramas and believes that Stanford's M&A program is something brand marketers and CMO's need to pay attention to. Hint: Acquiring content brands instead of starting them fresh. Robert thinks that the move away from the CMO is like moving deck chairs (with kudos to this Ian Truscott post). ------ Subscribe to PNR: This Old Marketing at iTunes, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, Spotify or wherever you listen to fine podcasts. I have a friend on the show today, Allison Fishman Task. She's a personal coach. Allison helps people move through life transitions. The majority of clients use Allison’s coaching to significantly change their careers, whether it’s moving up in their current role, starting their own business or finding a new, more meaningful job. She also works with parents-to-be and new parents as they prepare for the changes that come along with expanding a family. She knows this well - she is the mom to three children under the age of three. Can you believe it? She’s amazing. Allison received her coaching certificate from New York University. She also has a degree from Cornell in human development and family studies. Also, a fun fact about Allison... before coaching, she had another life in the culinary world. That’s how we met. She authored cookbooks and hosted culinary TV and web shows including TLC’s Home Made Simple and Lifetime’s Cook Yourself Thin. She also had a great show on Yahoo! called Blue Ribbon Hunter. Some take away with Allison, how she works with clients to help them transition to more meaningful place in their careers. She offers some case studies.
