Jeff Rotmeyer is the founder of ImpactHK, a registered NGO, that believes in the importance of kindness in addressing the pressing problem of the homeless in Hong Kong. Their journey started with the simple aim of doing one act of kindness per month for the homeless. They have grown significantly since then and many volunteers have joined ImpactHK in their journey to support the less fortunate in a meaningful and measurable way. Together, the whole group has evolved into a powerful humanitarian movement with the opportunity to make a positive impact on the plight of the homeless in Hong Kong. Jeff was the keynote speaker exploring kindness through leadership as a part of West Island Schools innovative Frontier program: an enrichment program for year 13 students in their final term of school. Hence you will hear some questions from some of the listeners of the webinar in the podcast and the format is a little different from other Hong Kong Confidential podcasts. What were you taught in sex-ed, and what do you wish you had learned? Often there’s a big difference between the two! Sara and guests Jules Hannaford, teacher and host of the Hong Kong Confidential podcast and comedian Elena Gabrielle of Story Party, talk about the sex education we received, which was shrouded in fear, abstinence and shame. We share our early sexual experiences, and reflect on what we wished we’d known about STI’s, consent and responsibility at that time. We also talk about how we learned about sex and intercourse from a biological standpoint, but there never seemed to be enough focus on the social and practical aspects of sexual relationships. Jules gives some guidance for parents on how to speak to their children about sex from a young age and encourage a healthy sexuality. We conclude that sex education shouldn’t just start and end in school, it can be an ongoing journey of learning for adults too. --- How confident a lover are you? (Email her at Jules@HongKongConfidential.net) - Hong Kong Confidential podcast Our Guest Jules Hannaford grew up in rural South Australia before moving to Adelaide, the state capital, and beginning her career as a teacher. She now lives in Hong Kong, the setting of her first book, Fool Me Twice, which details the pitfalls and abuse she experienced in her online search for love. Jules began writing her book in 2010 when she was involved in an internet dating scam. She decided this was an important story to share with other women to prevent them from becoming caught in the same trap and help them make safer, smarter decisions when dating online. It took a long time for her to muster the courage to share her story after battling the shame of choices that landed her in a dangerous situation she counts herself lucky to have survived. Jules has always had a passion for people and their stories, so she started her podcast ‘Hong Kong Confidential’ in 2017 to provide a platform for sharing the stories of interesting and unique people in Hong Kong. Thanks to The Cut's article, "How Many Bones Would You Break to Get Laid?" Tamu learns all about Incels and the lengths they will go to reach the impossible dream of being a "Chad". Moral to the Story: You are beautiful as you are unless you are a terrible person. Other Fun Topics Discussed: Getting to know us: What is your silly aspiration? For Tamu, it would be to marry Idris Elba. For Mallory it would be wine and cheese with Jeff Goldblum. Since that seemed realistic, she switched it to having Neil Patrick Harris's baby. #WePodcastLikeThis: It was butt-ass hot while recording, but we managed to pull it off! What is an Incel? Dudes who self categorize as involuntarily celibate. Plastic surgery for men is frowned upon. These dudes have terrible self-esteem. They feel women don't pick them because they are ugly. "Chads" are the male beauty standard in the Incel community; they are either a lumberjack, a vampire or a pretty boy. There are Incel forums where they Photoshop one another's photos to look more "Chad-like". Basically they have body dysmorphia. Therapy is SO very important. Most Incels are not white men. The glass ceiling for Incels is the friend zone. There are no true 8-10s. Listen to episode 17 where we explain the science of sex appeal. We are all basically 3-5s These dudes probably don't wash their legs. It's all a power grab. Incels could overthrow the Chads and change/break the patriarchy. Maybe the strategy is like the Irish who assimilated in America by wearing blackface and making fun of black people...it is easier to go with the status quo and be accepted rather than a breaker of chains. Mallory loves Ringo Starr. Why do men want giant balls? Dr. Eppley - providing judgement-free surgery since 1993. Welcome to The epDate, where we bring you the latest in podcasting for podcast people World Podcast News Popular Australian true crime podcast ‘The Teacher’s Pet’ will be temporarily taken down from Australian podcast channels following the arrest of accused murderer Chris Dawson. The podcast series by Hedley Thomas of The Australian investigated the disappearance of Chris’s wife Lyn Dawson in January, 1982. Renewed interest in the investigation spawned from the podcast, which has garnered over 28 million downloads since its release in May, 2018 - put the public eye back on the investigation and helped uncover new evidence, some of which may be used in the upcoming trial. Hedley Thomas said in an update on the 5th of April that the decision to take down the podcast was not taken lightly, but revealed that the show had received expert advice suggesting that it was the appropriate action to take to help ensure that Chris Dawson gets a fair trial. The audio streaming service Spotify has declared that podcasting will play a vital role going forward, with chief content officer, Dawn Ostroff declaring that the exploding industry’s ever-growing interest has gone beyond anything that any of us could have imagined. Ostroff told an audience at a South by South West session in Austin, Texas, that to achieve Spotify’s goal of being the world’s largest audio platform, podcasting has to play a part. Ostroff stated that according to their data, people who listen to podcasts on spotify spend twice as much time on the platform - while also listening to more music. Ostroff also suggested that longer podcasts are on the agenda for the future as well, with audience engagement sky-high for shows with an average runtime of 90 minutes and even shows that last in surplus of 3 hours. Two hosts of a podcast dedicated to recapping their favourite reality TV series have had their wildest dreams come true, with the reality show set to feature the two as guests on an upcoming episode. Comedians Max Cohen and Jim Search, hosts of Shut It Down: The Bar Rescue Recap Show, achieved the ultimate goal of featuring on an episode of their beloved ‘Bar Rescue’, a show where Jon Taffer, well-known entrepreneur, and owner of a bar and nightclub consulting firm, gives the Gordon Ramsey treatment to nightclubs and pubs to help them from closing. Cohen and Search aim to recap every single episode of the reality show. So far they are 65 episodes deep, with more than 100 more episodes to recap. Check out the show on your favourite podcasting app. “She Podcasts” - A facebook group and podcast launched 5 years ago to support and promote women’s podcasting, will host their first live event this year in Atlanta, Georgia, following immense crowdfunding support from their followers. She Podcasts began as a small facebook group for women podcasters to gain quick podcasting answers, tips and resources from one another. Now with over 12, 000 members, the vision for She Podcasts “is to support and nurture as many female-lead podcasts as possible, and to encourage knowledge sharing without excessive promotion”. It had been the group’s goal to host a live event for women’s podcasters for some time, but after hitting their target of $25, 000 on kickstarter - in fact clocking $40, 000 at the time of recording - they will now be hosting a podcasting weekend described as a “weekend of learning, camaraderie, and belonging”. Held between the 11th and 13th of October, the weekend will be about learning the core skills and aspects needed for every stage of podcasting. As ‘She Podcasts’ states on their kickstarter campaign, the event is: “part retreat and part conference and part slumber party”. Check out She Podcast on Facebook or their Kickstarter page, for more details. Fans of the WWE are in for a treat as two former champions have a brand new weekly podcast. Monica Rivera from the You Wanna Do What? podcast gave me a great tip to download any episodes from Netflix to my iPad. George Hrab from the Geologic podcast (who gets to go to all sorts of cool stuff because of his podcast) gave me some heads up on a voltage converter. It's Rarely as Bad as It Seems When I heard the phrase "17 hours on a plane (along with some shorter flights for a total of 20 hours)" I thought it sounded like a horror story. I pictured some little punk behind me kicking my kidneys while their parents order another jack and coke from the flight attendant. In the end, even in coach, I was able to stretch my legs. I had two seats between my fellow passenger in my row and slept off and on. There were probably 3-5 small children who would occasionally cry, but it was not the nightmare I had envisioned. When I think of things that I have dreaded in the past, they are rarely as bad as you think you're going to be. Erode Your Comfort Zone I can be shy. When I go to a restaurant I'm not looking to think outside the box. When I was told that a large chunk of my schedule was planned for me, I got nervous. I didn't know where I was going, and except for a few people, I didn't know who I was with, what we were doing, and what I needed to be ready. We had assigned seats both days including assignments on who to go to lunch with. One day, Sean Desouza was going to cook authentic Indian food (I have never had Indian food). The Know Like a Trust Factor I talk about this all the time. When you create valuable content on a consistent basis, your audience trusts you and likes you. If you can share a bit of yourself, they get to know you. When people know, like, and trust you then you have influence. I know Ronsley Vaz from his "Should I Start a Podcast" show. We may have bumped into each other. I finally got to talk to him at Social Media Marketing World where I was speaking. He asked me if I would speak at We Are Podcast. I said yes on the spot. Who doesn't want to go to Australia? I saved up my pennies (and busted out a charge card) and made it happen. As I mentioned above, I was nervous. This was a new country, a new conference (for me), with new people. The first day was very good. I got to meet a lot of people. It was somewhat of the "warm up act" for the main event happening the next two days. Every speaker at this event was awesome. Every person I met was super friendly and shared my love of podcasting. The hotel I stayed at was great. By the end of day one, you could color me impressed, and I was ready for day two. By the end of day two, I believe I had met about 95% of the people there including Jules from Hong Kong Confidential. By the end of day two, where I once felt uncomfortable I now felt relaxed. The Speakers Retreat When I realized that I was going to be living with a bunch of people I had never met, previously this would have put me way outside my comfort zone. By this point, Ronsley had not let me down and I just went with the flow. Here again, it was not as bad as it seemed and was actually kind of fun (in the end we just slept here, and all the speakers hung out at a second house). I would start the day with some sort of healthy pancakes made from buckwheat and for toppings I had some sort of berries instead of maple syrup. Different? Yes. Delicious? Absolutely. The conversations were awesome, and the jokes and laughing were endless. More New Things The following day I had Indian food for the first time. As I was told I was a "Picky Eater" growing up, I assumed I would not like this. I loved it. Sean is launching a course in the future to show people how to cook these types of meals quickly. I'm in. I was scheduled for a session of Holographic Kinetics. I had no idea what it was, but I had heard that "it was a bit woo-woo." All I knew was Ronsley had selected a few people to do it, and I was one of them. I was not here to judge. I was all in. Holographic Kinetics is an advanced Aboriginal healing technique based on an ancient understanding of Lore, the universal laws that govern the creation, and the knowledge that everything in nature is alive and can be communicated with. Thoughts and emotions from difficult experiences in the past can become trapped in a person’s body to create realities. When experienced in the past they affect the present, which in turn affects the future. Once trapped, these energies are carried through time, negatively affecting people’s lives. These trapped energies interact with the external world, and following the law of attraction, like attracts like, they will attract to themselves similar negative experiences. More Info This was the first time I had ever tried it, and it did help me connect some dots from my past. If I'm a better, more confident person, I don't care how I got there. My New Australian Family For me, this was an experience that was truly hard to put into words. I rarely checked email, got almost no sleep, and just enjoyed the beauty of Australia, and the friendship of some truly great people. Jordan Harbinger is hilarious and his wife Jen is a walking firecracker of energy. Check out Jordan's show ( I love feedback Friday) and I went through his level 1 (free) of his Human Dynamics course. Jordan is all about learning and he shares some great insights in his course. Nicole Baldinu and Omar Zenhom are the team behind $100 MBA which I had heard of, and I had also heard of Webinar Ninja software. These two are the brains behind both those entities. I enjoyed talking books with them at breakfast one day and Omar's talk on building teams really opened my eyes Steph Taylor creates the podcast Socialite. She is always smiling and with her accent its a bit like learning about Instagram from Mary Poppins. I LOVED her presentation on having a plan for your podcast launch. Sean D'Souza - Sean is not a know it all, but yet, he seems to know everything (he is the man behind Psychotactics). His presentation on developing skills was very cool ( Energy + Confidence = Skill) and has me rethinking how I present things at the School of Podcasting. He has a podcast called Three Month Vacation. I can't wait to learn how to cook from this guy. Leanne Hughes was the Co-MC of the event and has a smile that will light up the room. She was also my hero as the volunteered to take myself, Ally, and Pat to the airport at six AM. I wish I had more time to pick her brain as she is all about making great presentations. Check out her podcast First Time Facilitator Byron Dempsey is another hero. I had plugged my iPad into to keep it as charged as possible and then forget to put it back in my book bag. Bryon was nice enough to ship it back to the States for me. Byron is a super talented videographer and helps people grow their brands with video. Laura Peterson is someone I kind of knew as I listen to her Copy that Pops podcast. She was the trooper who had to deal with a presentation clicker that did not want to participate. She is super funny and if you are in front of her, please have her to her "California Girl" imitation. If you are thinking of writing a book, she's your gal. Ange Henderson is a business consultant that is super friendly, outgoing, and was always there when we needed a food run. THANKS ANGE! She's worked with huge companies like Netflix and I could go on, but just know she's done it all. Travis Chappell dropped knowledge bombs during his presentation on how to follow up without being a pest. He's one of those guys that doesn't say much, but when he does it is hilarious. Carl Taylor seemed like a nice guy and was in a pretty good mood considering he had just had his wisdom teeth pulled. This mild-mannered guy had sold three businesses and wrote a #1 business book by the age of 25. Every time I hear the phrase Koala Bear, I will think of Carl who let me know Koala's are not bears. They are marsupials. Allison Melody is someone I had met at other conferences, but just getting to chill with people builds that relationship deeper. Her presentation on monetizing you podcast had some new strategies I had not heard of. Check out her Food Heals Podcast. Shannon Morrison is the head of operations at Amplify Media and the founder of Mighty Social World. A super nice guy, and always willing to help with anything and everything. Jason Malouin is nuts. He has a great laugh and was the co-MC of the event. Jason was a great American to Aussie translator and stopped me from getting a sunburn that would've been on a whole new level. If you're in Australia and need a portrait photographer, he's your dude. Check out his Communicator podcast. Harry Duran and Natalie Jenkins are my partners in crime at many conferences. They both make me laugh, and occasionally snort. I love them both very much. You know Harry from Podcast Junkies, and Natalie is often taking head shots at events you attend. If she can make me look good, she can make you look amazing. When I found out I was going into the Hall of Fame, Natalie was one of the first people I called to see if she would photograph it. James Cridland is another person who has been on the show and his the host of the Podnews podcast (And newsletter which has more stories). James was the one who said, "I know a place where you can pet Koala's and Kangaroos" for which I will be eternally grateful. Check him out at www.podnews.net Pat Flynn - I've had Pat on my show. I bump into him all the time at events, but never really got a chance to hang. Pat Flynn (much like Harry and Natalie) makes me laugh a lot. I'm here to tell you the guy is hilarious. He is super chill, and he turned the groups on to some great games such as Psyche! and SpaceTeam. Both games are a lot of fun. He has Smart Passive Income, his book Will it Fly is a MUST READ, his Smart Podcast Player, and he is now teaching people how to podcast with his Power Up Podcasting. Shayde Furlong was the "Audio Engineer" for the whole week, and was cool enough to BRING A GUITAR! I enjoyed all out talks, super nice guy. Ronsley Vaz - The man behind the whole thing. The man behind Amplify media. If I am the Gandalf of podcasting, you are the Jared Easley of Australia. EVERYBODY KNOWS YOU. Check out his Content Amplifier it's amazing (and it's free) as well as his podcast "Should I start a podcast" at http://wearepodcast.com/shouldistartapodcast/ Rochelle Fernandes is always happy. How do you do that? Anytime we needed something, there she was. Amazing. Katherine Maslen of Brisbane Natural Health - Thanks for sharing your team. Your passion for helping people lead healthy lives is amazing. You're a great Mum. This show is recorded on the lands of the Wadjuk people of Perth region, and I pay respects to their elders past, present, and emerging. On this first episode of Round About, I want to touch on something that's affecting all of us. Climate Change. It's something that undeniably exists in the world - yet, we have world leaders who reject the notion that Climate Change is a major issue in todays society. After all, you have Trump opening up protected regions of America for fossil fuel exploration, and closer to home in Australia, you have current Prime Minister Scott Morrison taking a chunk of coal into the House of Representatives. That occurred long before Morrison benefited from overthrowing previous Prime Minister - and man who said that he would not lead a party who was as dedicated on combating climate change as he was - Malcolm Turnbull. Turnbull was ousted partially because of the undercurrent of anti-clean energy members of the Coalition, those who were vocal about the potential of the 'NEG' - the National Energy Guarantee. What a name. Later I'll share the interview I did with Jordan Osmond, co-director of the documentary Living the Change. A film that looks to New Zealand to see how some citizens are changing their house, their lives, and their towns, to be green and clean. Everything from creating 'living supermarkets' where a backyard is turned into an edible jungle of greenery that nourishes the occupants of the house, to green poo: outdoor toilets that allow the occupants to reuse their poo as fertiliser. Living the Change takes a look at how people can make a small change in their life to reduce their footprint on the world. And, after all, isn't that something that we need to try do more of? Isn't it important to try and lead a clean life? This may be easier sad than done, especially for those who are time poor, or financially strained. Thinking of single mothers with two kids, living in a rental property by themselves, trying to work full time, organise dinners, and raising the next generation - it's not easy for people in this situation to make a change in the world. Sure, we stopped using plastic bags, and we stopped using straws, but there is still a huge amount of things that can be done to live a greener life. It's easy to look at the removal of plastic bags from day to day life as the 'one and done' thing that will stop climate change in its tracks - and for many, that may be the extent of what they'll do to live a green life. But, plastic bags and straws are such a small thing in the grand scheme of waste that humans are creating. These single use items are so prevalent in society that it's almost impossible to not engage with them on a day to day basis. It's horrifying how much waste we can create in a week. I recently did a test of gauging how much waste I created in a week, setting aside all of the plastic that I used in one week so I could see what was left over. It was immense. I then went about reducing plastic waste, and choosing recyclable items (I'm talking paper based items, not plastic based recyclable items), and within a few weeks I was able to have a waste free week (meaning, all my waste was compostible or recyclable). So, how do you reconcile being green, on a budget, when you're living a hectic, mad life? What I did was buy things that helped reduce the amount of single use waste that I would have when I shopped. So, I picked up a produce bag from Onya bags that allowed me to get loose vegetables without having to stick them into plastic bags. I also picked up an Onya bread bag which meant that instead of buying prepacked loaves of bread, I was heading to a baker to get freshly baked bread, which in turn meant I was eating healthier bread. I also picked up some beeswax wraps to replace using glad wrap or plastic wrap for my sandwiches. These wraps are able to be reused over and over, with a mere rinse under warm water giving them a refresh. I stopped using plastic water bottles and picked up a Sigg bottle that gave me a nice clean reusable vessel to drink water, and in turn, I used a reusable coffee cup as well. I also bought a green power switch which allowed me to plug in energy draining items and switch them off once I'd finished using them so they weren't being zombie power drains and escalating my energy usage when I wasn't using them. I made sure to turn off my microwave when I wasn't using it as well. Now, all that is on when I'm not at home or I'm asleep is my modem and my fridge. Everything else is turned off at the wall or via a green power switch. These are all pretty basic things, but they're very small things that can make a change. Other things is opting to buy your fruit and vegetables from local produce centres or small green grocers, and if possible, even hit up a farmers market. These places are often cheaper, and are often directly from the farmers themselves, rather than going through a bunch of avenues to hit your local supermarket. If you're cleaning at home, have a look for some easy non-toxic homemade recipes. Often these are with items that you've already got in the house - such as bi-carb soda or vinegar. They're cheap, easy to make, and are less of a strain on the environment. If you can, try use public transport as much as possible. This in itself will usually help get your exercise minutes up as well, as you'll likely have to walk to the bus stop or train station, and will also be less of a strain on your car as well, reducing costs for vehicle maintenance and day to day fuel consumption. Set yourself up a vegetable garden. They're easy to do, and a lot of fun once they get going. They're often extremely cheap, and if you've got kids, it'll get them out in the sun with their fingers in the soil. It's also highly beneficial for your mental health as getting your fingers in touch with the earth helps revitalise you in some ways. I'm not sure how!, but I do know that I feel immediately better after doing a spot of gardening. Also, put up a 'no junk mail' sign on your mailbox, and swap out using paper towels for washable cloths. These are all small things which really don't impact that much in your day to day life, and hopefully will help you make that small step towards living a greener life. As a project, I recommend setting aside your single use waste that you produce in a week, and then assess the pile and see what waste you can cut out and swap out for greener items. I say all of this knowing that it bears repeating that living a green life is still a luxury for some. For those who are time poor or cash poor, it's hard to set up a vegetable garden, or set aside twenty bucks to buy a bag to put bread in. I know that with seeing my nephew growing up, the amount of waste that a baby creates in a day is immense. It's almost impossible to cut out single use items with a kid, especially with diapers, and their food consumption as well - with the majority of kids food being stored in plastic or single use plastic items, like yogurt sachets or jars of baby food. If you're cash poor, you're likely to have to buy items that come wrapped up in a bunch of single use plastics - items that are created for ease of use. I don't have an answer as to how to address being 'green' with living a cash poor, time poor life, but I can say that by taking small steps in small ways, you're doing a lot to reduce your footprint around the world. So, while stopping the use of plastic bags, straws, and balloons, is important, and while we all need to do more to live a green life, sometimes that's all our lives can permit. This episode is special to host Allison because it features a long-time friend and former roommate Brittany Campbell-Gautam. Gautam is a self-described modern nomad and her life proves it. On this episode, she talks about what sparked her interest in other cultures, her time in Macau and what brought her and her family back to the United States. She also talks about introducing her Nepalese husband and their daughter to the American South including how they infuse Nepalese cultural and the Hindu religion into their everyday lives. The Who's that lady (from history)? is Hedy Lamarr, an actor and inventor. Listen, Here features Hong Kong Confidential.
Jules Hannaford is an interesting woman. For the past 18 years she has been living in Hong Kong, despite being a natural born Australian. She wrote a book titled “Fool Me Twice,” detailing her dangerous experiences in the online dating scene, and how others can avoid what happened to her. For nearly a year now, she has hosted the podcast “Hong Kong Confidential,” interviewing interesting Hong Kong denizens about the ins and outs of the city. I was lucky enough to interview Jules for this episode. She told me about the various podcasts that inspired her to create her podcast. She talks about how Chinese culture views mental health and sexuality, and how they’ve adopted a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Finally Jules shares with me how she finds her guests, and where she hopes she will wind up in the future. From her carefree early life on a farm in rural South Australia to a marriage that was broken even before it began, then living as a struggling single mother and navigating a string of bad romances – this is the story of a woman whose lessons in life – and love – have been learned the hard way. Jules Hannaford grew up living an idyllic childhood, full of fun and adventures. She went to boarding school and had the time of her life excelling at sport, making new friends and getting in trouble due to her risk taking and mischievous nature. When single motherhood called for her to step up and take charge, she found her passion in her career as a teacher, yet she struggled to find someone to share her life with. One day, the opportunity came for her to move across the world, and she packed her bags, pulled her daughter out of school, and took the risk of leaving her sleepy home city for Asia’s mega city of Hong Kong. From then on, life was different. Suddenly, she was in a job she loved, and she no longer had to struggle to make ends meet, but there was still one thing missing. Love. Optimistic, Jules began internet dating, and unwittingly invited in a new kind of trouble into her life. Was it her trusting nature? Her naïveté? Or was it simply her desperate desire to share her life with someone that made her take the risks that almost cost her life? Andy Martin catches up with Jules to chat about the book, that moment, where you can get it and what it's like writing a book from such an intense situation. Henrik Hoeg talks to us about his love of poetry and his passion for Peel Street Poetry open mic events, where he not only reads poems but also is the MC. Over the past eleven years, Peel Street Poetry has evolved into a group of international poets from all walks of life, who write and read poetry at the open mic sessions in Hong Kong. Henrik shares how his interest in poetry began in high school with passionate teachers who inspired him with their creative teaching methods. We explore how poetry can change lives and how joining the poetry readings can break through barriers and develop a person’s self-confidence and public speaking skills. The power of the written word can impact change and inspire people to delve further into the world of poetry. We discuss Henrik’s book "Irreverent Poems for Pretentious People" and he reads us two wonderful poems from his collection during the podcast. Henrik explains how writing poetry in other people’s voices can expand your perspective on life and the importance of creativity to nourish the soul. The Peel Street Poetry community are involved in many charity events and Henrik has spoken in two TEDx talks.
