Full Text of ReadingsGood Friday of the Lord's Passion Lectionary: 40The Saint of the day is Blessed James OldoBlessed James Oldo's Story You've heard rags-to-riches stories. Today, we celebrate the reverse. James of Oldo was born into a well-to-do family near Milan in 1364. He married a woman who like him, appreciated the comforts that came with wealth. But an outbreak of the plague drove James, his wife, and their three children out of their home and into the countryside. Despite those precautions, two of his daughters died from the plague. James determined to use whatever time he had left to build up treasures in heaven and to build God's realm on earth. He and his wife became Secular Franciscans. James gave up his old lifestyle and did penance for his sins. He cared for a sick priest, who taught him Latin. Upon the death of his wife, James himself became a priest. His house was transformed into a chapel where small groups of people, many of them fellow Secular Franciscans, came for prayer and support. James focused on caring for the sick and for prisoners of war. He died in 1404 after contracting a disease from one of his patients. James Oldo was beatified in 1933. Reflection The death of those we love brings a troubling awareness of our own mortality. James had that experience when he gazed into a friend's grave, and it brought him to his senses. He determined to use whatever time he had left to build up treasures in heaven and to build God's realm on earth. Our time is limited, too. We can use it well or foolishly: The choice is ours. I found Alex when listeners sent me an opinion piece in the New York Times he wrote, The Story You've Been Told About Recycling Is a Lie.Getting to where I take years to fill a load of trash means I've researched waste a lot, so based on the headline, I thought, "yeah, I've read this story before. I'll skim it so I can say I read it and then move on to important things." Instead, I was fascinated and found plenty new. I had to read his book, Waste Wars: The Wild Afterlife of Your Trash, which came out last month. I can't recommend it enough.Whatever you know about waste and pollution, the book shares more and it's relevant to your life if you value liberty, freedom, justice, not killing people for profit, and not destroying your own health, safety, and security. Our system of waste forces us to act in opposition to those values. We don't have to. We can change the system. Understanding it helps. Listen to this episode, read Alex's book, and read his opinion piece. Here are its opening paragraphs:In the closing years of the Cold War, something strange started to happen.Much of the West's trash stopped heading to the nearest landfill and instead started crossing national borders and traversing oceans. The stuff people tossed away and probably never thought about again — dirty yogurt cups, old Coke bottles — became some of the most redistributed objects on the planet, typically winding up thousands of miles away. It was a bewildering process, one that began with the export of toxic industrial waste. By the late 1980s, thousands of tons of hazardous chemicals had left the United States and Europe for the ravines of Africa, the beaches of the Caribbean and the swamps of Latin America. In return for this cascade of toxins, developing countries were offered large sums of cash or promised hospitals and schools. The result everywhere was much the same. Many countries that had broken from Western imperialism in the 1960s found that they were being turned into graveyards for Western industrialization in the 1980s, an injustice that Daniel arap Moi, then the president of Kenya, referred to as “garbage imperialism.” Outraged, dozens of developing nations banded together to end waste export. The resulting treaty — the Basel Convention, entered into force in 1992 and ratified by nearly every nation in the world but not the United States — made it illegal to export toxic waste from developed to developing countries. The NY Times opinion piece Alexander wrote that led me to him: The Story You've Been Told About Recycling Is a LieWaste Wars: The Wild Afterlife of Your Trash at Hachette Hosted on Acast. Have you ever felt stuck in a negative loop, wondering why life seems to be working against you? What if the way you see the world is shaping your entire experience? In this transformative episode, we explore how shifting your perception can change your life. Perception is the lens through which we interpret reality, and when we adjust that lens, everything shifts. This episode offers three powerful insights to help you break free from limiting narratives and embrace a new perspective. Challenge the Story You're Telling Yourself: We often create stories around our experiences, assuming them to be absolute truths. But are they really? Through a compelling story of resilience, we uncover how questioning our own narratives can lead to unexpected growth. The key takeaway: Ask yourself—what am I assuming about this situation, and is there another way to see it? Find the Gift in the Contrast: Life's challenges are often disguised blessings. That moment of frustration, the unexpected detour, or even heartbreak—what if these are opportunities rather than setbacks? By reframing difficulties, we can shift from resistance to acceptance, discovering the lessons hidden within adversity. Shift from Victim to Creator: While we can’t control everything that happens, we can control how we respond. The greatest transformation occurs when we move from a mindset of “Why is this happening to me?” to “What can I create from this?” When we reclaim our power, even the most painful experiences can become stepping stones to something greater. This episode is more than just a conversation—it's an invitation to change the way you see your world. If you're ready to challenge old beliefs, embrace a new perspective, and start living with greater clarity and purpose, this episode is for you. Take a moment tonight to ask yourself: “What's one way I can see my life differently tomorrow?” Let that thought guide you into a fresh, empowered reality. Full Text of ReadingsThe Sixth Day in the Octave of Christmas Lectionary: 203The Saint of the day is Saint EgwinSaint Egwin's Story You say you're not familiar with today's saint? Chances are you aren't—unless you're especially informed about Benedictine bishops who established monasteries in medieval England. Born in the seventh century of royal blood, Egwin entered a monastery, and was enthusiastically received by royalty, clergy, and the people as the bishop of Worcester, England. As a bishop he was known as a protector of orphans and the widowed and a fair judge. Who could argue with that? His popularity didn't hold up among members of the clergy, however. They saw him as overly strict, while he felt he was simply trying to correct abuses and impose appropriate disciplines. Bitter resentments arose, and Egwin made his way to Rome to present his case to Pope Constantine. The case against Egwin was examined and annulled. Upon his return to England, Egwin founded Evesham Abbey, which became one of the great Benedictine houses of medieval England. It was dedicated to Mary, who had reportedly made it known to Egwin just where a church should be built in her honor. Egwin died at the abbey on December 30, 717. Following his burial many miracles were attributed to him: The blind could see, the deaf could hear, the sick were healed. Reflection Correcting abuses and faults is never an easy job, not even for a bishop. Egwin attempted to correct and build up the clergy in his diocese and it earned him the wrath of his priests. When we are called to correct someone or some group, plan on opposition, but also know that it might be the right thing to do. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
Today we talk about changing the one person entirely in your control: You. I will also reveal my word of the year for 2025, and discuss our usual Monday segments. Featured event: Night Before Christmas Series starts TOMORROW! They will release at 5pm Central each day and lead up to the final reading on December 24. Sponsor 1: DiscountMylarBags.com Sponsor 2: AgoristTaxAdvice.com Listener Feedback So as to yesterday's podcast. I have a family member that doesn't respect anyone's boundaries. They instigate the uncomfortable conversations just to cause tension. They bring up horrible things that have happened to you and rub them in your face and laugh about it. I cut this person out of my life for 5+ years. I was so much happier and healthier mentally. Me not having this person in my life caused family tension that was constantly thrown at me. This person is my mother. Two years ago my mother's husband got very sick, I chose to go see her and him right before he passed away. When I opened that door, the rest of my family got off my back. I currently have a "relationship" with my mother, but the more I give the more she wants. She acted somewhat normal for about a year and now she is back to her constant digging and trying to start shit. I have to ignore her comments and change the subject regularly. Pretty much my whole family dynamic is toxic. I have a few more crazy Ian's hanging from the tree. Deflecting and subject changing is a skill, but it's also exhausting. Stepping away to breath is also important. Limiting time spent is a requirement for sanity. And honestly a couple of beers is one way I stay calm at family functions. For now I am choosing to put myself in this situation in moderation. I hate it and have begun to dread it again, but it is a choice I have made to keep the peace between other family members. My best recommendation is to cut the toxic people out of your life no matter who they are, and don't let them back in because they won't change. Because you are worth so much more than being someone's doormat whoever they are to you. End of year Schedule Tuesday Live with Becky Cook and Toolman Tim Cook, 9:30am tomorrow Friday Homestead Happenings, 2pm Friday Two Week Break Tales from the Prepper Pantry Dried herbs and teas are jarred up (finally). Was stoked to see I had some Mexican Tarragon which tastes kinda like anise and is great in teas. We plan to grow more next year Beef breakfast sausage experiment (4.5 pound batches) The German goodies are gone from Aldi in our area - cheesecake - I waited to get a stollen until it was close to the party so I wasnt tempted because good choices start at the grocery store Weekly Shopping Report from Joe Our most recent shopping trip was on Thursday; Sonia was out of cream cheese, so we went early. We went first into Dollar Tree. Stock levels looked good. I could definitely see signs of rotation with some new products in the drinks area, and depletion (but not yet exhaustion) of others. We did not go into Home Depot, but the online price of a 2x4x8 is still $3.85. Aldi was last. Stock levels didn't look notably different from our usual Friday visits. My preferred variety of chocolate (70% cacao) was back in stock, but there wasn't much of it. Staple prices were: bread (20 oz. white): $1.39; eggs: $3.96; whole milk: $2.87 (-); heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.69; butter: $3.49 (-); bacon: $3.99; potatoes: $3.69; sugar: $2.69; flour: $1.79; and 80% lean ground beef: $3.99 (-). They had cantaloupes this week. I'm not sure about the untainted regular gasoline. A Weigels that we don't normally visit last had it at $3.49/gallon, which is a 20c decrease, but I don't recall what my usual station(s) were showing. Being retired, my need for gasoline is dramatically reduced. Frugality Tip Today is a short and sweet simple tip. Whenever we are out shopping or whatnot I pack a small cooler with drinks and a reusable ice block. I also keep an extra insulated tumbler full of water in the car at all times. Stopping to grab a drink adds up quickly, especially with someone that drinks soda. So stop yourself from grabbing that convenience store overpriced drink and just pack a small cooler. Happy saving y'all. ~Margo Operation Independence Nothing to report other than some advice: Dont overspend for Christmas - enjoy it but dont over spend Main topic of the Show: Renew Yourself, Renew Your World Build the life you choose on your terms Choice What does LFTN want as a community next year? Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Third Week of Easter Lectionary: 276The Saint of the day is Blessed James OldoBlessed James Oldo's Story You've heard rags-to-riches stories. We welcome Chris Marino back to the show! Chris was on episodes 51 and 52 of Journey of the Rhode Runner when he ran his first Boston Marathon in 2021. Then on December 3, 2022, while out on a run, Chris survived a widowmaker heart attack (which has a 10-20% survival rate). Not only has Chris survived, but is thriving. On April 15, 2024, Chris will be running his first Boston Marathon since his heart attack! In addition to his heart attack, we discuss Chris' son Braden and his rare disease, Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), which prompted Chris to run the Boston Marathon to begin with. And if this was not enough to take in, 3 weeks before Chris' heart attack, his wife Katie suffered a seizure! In this epic-sode, we dive deep into each of these events. You will be truly inspired by this incredible Marino family! While many people would buckle under any of these events, the Marino family has not only survived, but are thriving! This episode is also dedicated to the 22 Too Many hero: Ellis Weems “Ellis was born in Landsthul, W. Germany on 21 June 1992 (the summer solstice). I was still in the military, and he was the joy of my life! He was raised in Harper Woods, Michigan. Ellis was my only child, and my mirror image who left this Earth far too soon. He loved life, and loved to put a smile on the faces of those who came in contact with him. He was active in soccer, baseball and an extreme skateboarder. He loved to eat – my goodness, my grocery bill stayed high when he was home! He was a free-spirit; always soaking up the information he received from others so that he can master it in his own life. I miss his smile and our conversations about life. I miss my Son every single day…15 July 2016 will be a constant reminder that the joy of my life is no longer here…” shared by his mom, Theresa In the spring of 2017, Theresa ran a 5k in memory of Ellis at Ft. Bragg, NC. #22toomany#OurHeroes are #NeverForgotten Please feel free to donate to Chris' charity #BFightsALD to help fight and bring attention to ALD. My sister was one of the funniest and strongest women I ever knew. From a very young age, she always excelled at athletics. Her success in soccer came from her love of the game, hard work, and perseverance. Deana never failed at anything she put her mind to. She was a fun-loving and caring daughter, aunt, sister, and friend. She was an amazing scholar. She was an outstanding Marine and had recently found her calling to share her love of health and fitness with others. Deana was so brave. She served on one of the first Female Engagement Teams (FET) in OEF (Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan). She never shared what she saw and went through over there. She only said it forever changed her. Although Deana's passing is tragic, my family is trying to raise PTSD and suicide awareness by sharing her story and keeping her memory alive.” Resting Place: Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monongahela, PA Deana home state is Pennsylvania and her last residence was North Carolina #22toomany #OurHeroes are #NeverForgotten --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Inspiring Journeys can be found on: Instagram: @InspiringJourneysPod Facebook Kerri can be found on Instagram: @running_with_the_rockstar Facebook: Every Run Has a Story You can find Adriana at: Instagram @SoulFriendYoga email: adriana@soulfriendyoga Soulfriendyoga.com – Use the code SOUL20 for 20% off You can find The Rhode Runner in the following places: Twitter: @TheRhodeRunner Instagram: @TheRhodeRunner Facebook You can also download and subscribe to the Inspiring Journeys Podcast at: Apple Podcasts iHeartRadio Spotify
We have another exciting episode this week as Kerri and Paul welcome Eddie Scali to the show. Eddie was a New York volunteer firefighter, then went on to an impactful 21 year career as an NYPD officer. These days, Eddie is a warrior for mental wellness for both first responders and the general population. He started a private law enforcement online community where people can lean on each other in times of need. This led him to the amazing Project Accounted For community, which is open to everybody. We talk to the charismatic Eddie about is experience as a volunteer firefighter at the time of the 9/11 terror attacks, his time in law enforcement, And we gain a whole new perspective of what first responders have to deal with several times a day, and how they cope with the pressure. Eddie truly is inspiring, and is making the world a better place by building some incredible communities. Also, we kick it a little old school, Rhode Runner style, as Eddie talks about signing up for the Long Island Half Marathon, which is taking place on May 5, 2024. He is doing this in support of the amazing organization, P.S. I Love You Day, which is a registered non-profit organization in New York State, dedicated to eradicating the stigma around mental health. Also, today's 22 Too Many Veteran is: Cody Hooks USAF 802nd Security Forces Squadron Lackland AFB from his mom: “My son, Cody, was loved by all who knew him; he never met a stranger. Cody always had a desire to serve in the military since he was little; he was involved all 4 years of High school in the ROTC program, where his Senior year made the highest rank as Captain. Upon graduating high school he joined the USAF and served from 2010-2013. Cody deployed to Kuwait in 2011. Cody loved spending time with family and friends. I will never understand why this happened but will forever keep his memory alive and try to help other families cope with the loss of a child. I have joined TAPS and they have helped me understand more about military suicides, I hope one day the number will be 0 and not 22+. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other mentions include DeemedFit Clothing, who's proceeds also go to P.S. Looking to deepen your prayer life? Subscribe to Pause+Pray! Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Second Week of Easter Lectionary: 268The Saint of the day is Blessed James OldoBlessed James Oldo's Story You've heard rags-to-riches stories.
