Law Enforcement Life Coach / Sometimes Heroes Need Help Podcast
Welcome back to another impactful season of the "Sometimes Heroes Need Help" Podcast. We are starting this year off with an amazing , impactful, dedicated 33 year law enforcement veteran, Doug Shoemaker. Doug has held many high ranking assignments making his way from patrol officer to chief in several jurisdictions. Doug and is currently working in the private sector, bringing his years of experience to industries that serve the law enforcement profession. I had a really great conversation with Doug about leadership, culture, and the role each of us plays in bringing about the change we desire. Sit back and give it a listen and come away a better version of you for doing so!More About Doug:I believe passionately in policing. Those who answer the call to serve are the ones who we look to not just to be the bedrock of policing now, but the ones who will ultimately create a better future for us and for our communities. I began my career in Jefferson City, Missouri, and spent nearly 27 years serving residents of the state capitol. I spent years developing and prioritizing community partnerships, which ultimately became a pivotal piece of managing the "Journey for Justice," a march held in the wake of the Ferguson protests in 2014. Working closely with the local NAACP chapter, the department and the community began to come together, rather than remain divided to begin to build more meaningful solutions for all. I served as the Chief of Police in Grand Junction, Colorado for over four and one half years and then served the people of Denton Texas as their chief of police. The women and men I've had the good fortune to work with are passionate about policing, much like those in police agencies across the world. I've most recently retired fully from policing, and while I will miss it, I'm proud of what I accomplished during my time on the job.I have had some incredible opportunities working with the International Association of Chiefs of Police, beginning back in 2007 and through today. I've served on several committees and sections, and in 2018 was elected to serve a two-year term as the Vice Chair of the Public Information Officers Section. I was honored to be elected as the IACP's 5th Vice President in September of 2021 and during my work as a Vice President I had the opportunity to lead several national and international efforts on culture within policing agencies.Outside of IACP, I'm also a member of the Texas Police Chiefs Association (TPCA), NAWLEE, IAWP, and NOBLE.I am very proud to be a founding board member of The Curve, an effort founded and led by renowned author and speaker Simon Sinek. Our work at The Curve aims to change the way we address culture within policing organizations - particularly at the leadership level.I begin my new journey as a Public Safety Executive with Peregrine in August of 2024, and I can't express how excited I am by the opportunity to be a part of a company that is forward thinking, genuinely values it members and clients, and looks to the future as an incredible opportunity to work with public safety agencies to provide solutions to challenges they face within their communities.- I look forward to connecting with like-minded individuals who want better public safety Thank you for taking the time to give this podcast a listen. California has proposed a revenue sharing bill, which passed in the Assembly. (3:05) CA is proposing a bill that would create a revenue sharing system for all student athletes. Student athletes can make up to $25,000 per year, and potentially more so long as they complete their undergraduate degree. The bill would not classify student athletes as employees but would give them access to certain benefits like healthcare. Another way that the NCAA model is changing in favor of student athletes. NIL Collectives are speaking in front of Congress 6/6 and 6/7 to lobby for a federal bill. (13:21) We have discussed many times how the proposed federal NIL bills are NCAA favored. Collectives associated with power 5 schools are taking a stand to lobby for federal legislature in favor of student athletes. The second annual NIL Summit occurred last weekend in Atlanta and Holly was there in-person. (16:30) Holly discusses the speakers, student athletes, brands, and sessions that occurred at the summit. The program remains dedicated to fostering the growth and education of student athletes and brands within the NIL space. The NCAA and conferences have been reviewing their rules regarding national letter of intent day and Individuals Associated With Prospective student athletes ("IAWP"). Some argue that moving it to early would impact high school athletes' senior year of competition. IAWP is a rule that was implemented to prevent schools from hiring an individual and using that individual as an inducement to get a prospective student athlete to attend that school. Coaches are now calling for IAWP to be rescinded because NIL is the true inducement now. BYU football has some confusion with their NIL sponsor Built Protein Bars. (30:00) Built Bars area Utah based brand which made a deal with BYU football to pay walk-ons tuition and NIL money to the team, totaling around $1.25 million. Players started expressing frustration that Built wasn't holding up their end of the deal by failing to pay 15% royalties on the BYU specific "CougarTail" bars. However, it was apparent that the 15% would go to the head coach for program development. Built ended up paying each athlete $600 in lieu of this misunderstanding. Rejuvenated Women: Impeccable Health for High Performing Women
How do you pivot or leap out of career burnout? We all have our reasons for staying in a career or continuing to pursue a business that is not really serving our fulfillment and well being.Today's conversation with Suzanne Monroe is a deep dive into how you lead the change, whether it's in staying where you're at or pivoting to what's next, the change begins with each of us.The change is also required to not continually repeat the patterns of burnout that will inevitably follow if you haven't taken the time to identify them. This conversation is an absolute must listen, especially if you're feeling burned out in your career.Suzanne Monroe was working a high pressure job that didn't align with her personal beliefs, where the corporate culture was to sleep under your desk instead of going home to rest and recharge that led her to experience career burnout. Simultaneously, a close loved one was diagnosed with a health crisis and every doctor told them there was nothing traditional medicine could do to help. This is where her holistic health journey began. She then poured herself into researching, reading, and ultimately helping her loved one turn the corner towards healing, sparking her passion for wellness and inspiring her to leave corporate America and traditional healthcare behind her.Suzanne, the formerly burnt out corporate America employee, is now doing what she loves as the Founder of The International Association of Wellness Professionals (IAWP), Director of the IAWP's Holistic Wellness Coach Certification and Training Program, and author. She aims to help people reawaken their purpose and find a career they love, as well as live a healthy and happy lifestyle. Last year alone, she helped reach 11.5 Million people with the message of holistic wellness and living a life you love. Burnout is an incredibly serious issue that has become increasingly prominent in today's fast-paced and often demanding work environments. Millions of people struggle with burnout, which is why World Health Organization recently deemed it a classifiable workplace phenomenon. Burnout was coined in the 1970s to describe the consequences of severe stress on doctors, nurses, and other helping professionals. Yet over the years, it became clear that burnout can affect us in any career. Here are the common signs that can tell you whether you are heading toward it:Every day is a struggleYou feel helpless and disillusionedTaking care of your job or your family seems like a waste of energyYou are mentally and physically exhausted all the timeYou have no motivation because nothing you do seems to make a differenceYou find most of your tasks dull or overwhelmingBurnout isn't a flaw or weakness; it is your mind-body system sending you a strong message that it is time for a course correction. Yet many of us are not paying attention to these signals because we are too externally focused and not connected to our mind and bodyBurnout is serious - and with the right tools and support, it is possible to prevent or manage burnout to maintain a healthy work environment and overall well-being. Find out how you can avoid going into career burnout in this week's episode of Empowerment Solutions with my special guest Suzanne Monroe, who shares how she went from burnt out to finding her passion and purpose again. Recently terminated RN Jasper Pare joins me for a closeup look at what led him to choose to lose his job as a nurse. He shares vulnerably with us the impact this has all had on his life, both professionally and personally. What's incredible to witness, though, is his resilient mindset of growth and opportunity. Instead of allowing this devastating betrayal to lead him into a pit of despair, he has chosen to rise above it and see all the gifts that revealed themselves to him. There are so many layers to the decisions of our nursing profession to allow the very code of ethics and morality and our advocacy for patient rights in health care to be eroded with the medical mandates we have seen. And this is just one of the many stories of institutional betrayal so similar to his. How do we move forward from this erosion of trust and integrity in our system? How do we heal as individuals and as a collective culture of health care professionals? These are the questions of importance. Sandra's Takeaways:Are male nurses experiencing the same high level of heavy expectations as their women colleagues?Red flags revealed and the questions so many are asking… why are alternate views and conflicting research being left out and censored?Medical mandates and the wake of devastation. Jennifer Kirk and I take you through a conversation through nursing challenges, moral distress, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma and how that can affect our lives as nurses. We also highlight the health care systems set up that leave us vulnerable to errors that impact us and our mental health in devastating ways and how we can set ourselves up to be supported with mentorship and seeking help and guidance before we are circling the drain in despair. Sandra's Key Takeaways:The Baggage Of Nursing Boundaries Heart Math Breathing Bullying Compassion Fatigue About the Guest: Jennifer Kirk BA, BN, RN, LP is the founder of Dragonfly Meadows - offering Equine Facilitated Learning workshops for RN'S, LPN'S and other professional caregivers since 2014. Jennifer is a practicing Registered Nurse with 17 years of experience. As an RN who has worked the majority of her career in critical care, she knows all too well the challenges nurses. Throughout her career, she has experienced the changes in the health care system that have impacted nurses: increased workload, low morale, high turnover rates, moral injury, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and poor work-life balance, to name a few. Jennifer took her first workshop in Equine Facilitated Learning in 2012 and wanted to find a way to help nurses understand the stressors of their careers. A magazine article on Compassion Fatigue was an "A-ha" moment for her and she has been offering workshops for Nurses since 2014. She is a certified Equine Learning Professional through PRO-EFW ( Canada). About the Host:Sandra Payne is an ex-RN and Master Certified Holistic Wellness Trauma Informed Coach. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Kayla: I’ve become an avid listener the past couple of months as I have recently taken a renewed natural approach to my health. I appreciate your wealth of knowledge that you so graciously share with the world! I am 4 months post partum and am going through quite a roller coaster of thyroid issues. I was diagnosed hypothyroid during my pregnancy with a small node that was detected. The node has since shrunk in size but my thyroid problems have persisted. I have been diagnosed with postpartum thyroiditis, with a thyroid that went hyper and now is extremely hypo. My endo is sending me biweekly for blood work to constantly update my synthroid dosage. I am getting frustrated by the traditional medicine approach to thyroid management as it is seriously effecting my breast milk supply. My goal is to excusivly breastfeed my daughter, but have had to supplement with formula as a result of the thyroid issues. I want to resolve this in the most wholistic way so I can give my daughter the best nutrition. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Gio: I started one of your protocols: Here's the backstory and my question involving it (Thank you in advance!): My friend is a big fan of your podcast and recently came across episode 760 and shared you and it with me. I am living with herpes and have done a multitude of natural remedies and probably some "snake-oil saleman" like remedies in the last few years. I've had anal warts completely disappear but one came back after a few years recently following a lot of stressful exertion and time in my life. I've been doing everything I can to rid myself of this pesky virus for good, as I believe there must be a way. I have not taken antibiotics in over 15 years (I'm currently 32 5'11" & 165 lbs), have a 95% clean diet, and have fought every sickness with whole foods. As a bird's eye view of my diet, I eat for mostly pitta, mostly vegan (lots and lots of dark leafy greens), and eat the highest quality grassfed/grassfinished ground beef & pasture raised chicken. I rarely eat processed food, exercise regularly but stress and lack of sleep wear my immune system down rather quickly. When I read up & and listened in on your Episode 760, I felt I finally found missing pieces to the puzzle in attempting to rid myself of this virus. My curiosity had wondered that maybe my immune system has never stopped fighting the virus and therefore my get exhausted more quickly as I age. Well, one week ago Friday (March 22, 2019), I was helping my roommate overcome a fever and sickness, and I believe I may have caught a bug from him, as I began to get a scratchy throat. Then that Sunday the 24th with a limited budget, I began the ACV+Cayenne+GSE water 3xdaily and the lysine+vitamin 1000mg each 3x daily, and I believe the wart shrank considerably. What is strange is that I've been extremely congested this last week and blowing a lot of green mucus (recognizing there's an infection). I was wondering if this could be die off system of the bacteria causing the infection and might be a natural culling process of the virus if in fact it's been residing within the bacteria? I'm going to continue with your regiment up to 2 weeks while saving to get the rest of your recommedations in April. Could you provide any feedback for the congestion/sickness I'm experiencing; is the congestion/infection potential/usual of he die off process for herpes? Thank you so much for your time and consideration. I hope my details are helpful rather than laborsome to read. Blessings and loving gratitude for all you and your teams do,Gio Nancy: Hi Dr. Cabral,I was wondering if there is a specific ayurvedic herbal formula that helps to rev up HCL production. I have become intolerant of HCL (per Zyto scan and symptoms that I had noticed recently after supplementing for decades due to achlorhydria.Thank you very much,Nancy Lee: Hi Stephen!I'm a woman in my mid 20's with a background in Nutritional science. I'm considering taking the IHP program but wondering how much is covered in terms of business/marketing. Many of my health coach peers have taken other certifications that left them feeling like they didn't know where to start, or how to find and reach out to new clients with email lists etc. Does the program provide you with a website such as IIN and IAWP? I'm also wondering if it's accredited by ICHWC or NANP, which seem to be the gold standard in holistic health coaching certifications. I believe the regulations for holistic practitioners will be stricter over time, so it would be reassuring for many to have that quality guarantee.Thank you Maria: Hello, I was wondering what you would recommend as far as far as tests and tx for my husband. He has skin issues that come and go, looks like a fungus, they are round lesions that appear. They itch and burn. Also has fungal issues with his toenails. Thank you for any help you can offer. Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral - can you tell me if you have ever had a client with Membranous Nephrotic Syndrome. Since this is an autoimmune disease I would assume we would focus on the gut - maybe an OAT? What else would you suggest for getting to root cause and putting this in remission?
