Questions come naturally to young children: Why is the sky blue? Where do butterflies go in winter? As they grow older, students need invitations to cultivate curiosity and teachers who are able to teach the skill of questioning. The Question Formulation Technique builds this lifelong learning skill, teaching students how to ask their own questions. In this episode we're taking a journey into our podcast archives to a conversation with Dan Rothstein, Luz Santana, and Sarah Westbrook from The Right Question Institute to discuss how the QFT works and what we can do to cultivate curiosity through questioning.

Quantum mechanics, which arose from the necessity to describe events beyond classical physics, entails the quantization of energy and wave particle duality, which are fundamental notions introduced by Planck, Einstein, and de Broglie. Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle and Schrödinger's wavefunction formalism define quantum systems' probabilistic nature. Quantum field theory (QFT) applies these ideas to fields, characterizing particles as excitations within them, which is critical for understanding forces in the Standard Model of particle physics. Quantum computing, which takes advantage of qubits' superposition and entanglement, promises solutions to problems that classical computers cannot solve, including quantum error correction and encryption to ensure safe communication. Experimental developments such as Bose-Einstein condensates and quantum dots allow for precise control and observation of quantum systems.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/library-of-philosophy--5939304/support.

I can't believe it's taken me SO long to share this conversation with the Amazing Elise Foster. Elise is a powerful coach, an accomplished author, and a friend. She's the co-author of The Multiplier Effect with Liz Wiseman and Beautiful Questions in the Classroom with Warren Berger (who's written several bestselling books on powerful questions). She was a thinking partner for me when I was in the early stages of writing my second book, and I was shocked and honored when she decided to come to my Facilitation Masterclass and even more shocked and honored when she actually got something out of it - proving that it really is more about what they practice and the container I create than what I teach! I'm also honored that she's been a great member of the Conversation Factory Insiders' group - we started 2 years ago with alums of the masterclass meeting monthly for experiments and intentional practice, and 2 years and 22 sessions later, we've all learned a tremendous amount about leading groups online. Elise was kind enough to lead a session for the community on the QFT, a Question Formulation Technique from the Right Question Institute which has shifted how I think about Powerful Questions and how I coach teams on them, too. In this conversation, I wanted Elise to unpack not just some of her favorite “Eye Opener” warmup exercises to help get teams to think differently, but also how she thinks about bringing them into sessions with teams, and why they matter. Lots of folks talk about icebreakers - and they can be helpful to help us connect to each other from afar…but they are such a broad class of activities - they can include games like “Two truths and lie” which are just about connecting people as humans or “three things”, a classic improv game which helps folks just warm up their brains. Priya Parker asks folks to check into the chat with where they are and what actual substance is beneath their feet, to help ground and connect us. Eye-openers are both about what we do, as leaders and coaches of people in the moment, in order to create an experience for people…and eye-openers are also about how we help people reflect and unpack that experience and how to connect it to a larger idea about transformation and development. Elise kicks our conversation off by talking about the “Hand Clasping Game”, a classic exercise that you can try now since we talk about it, but don't give it enough time to “breathe” in the conversation. Just clasp your hands together naturally. Of course, this assumes you have two hands. If this doesn't apply to you, I hope you can imagine the process. Now, unclasp your hands and “reclasp them” but shift hands - whatever hand was “pinky out” let the other hand be the “pinky out” hand. Elise calls this “reversing the weave” of your hands. What do you feel? Discomfort. Oddness. Weirdness. That is a raw, visceral experience. Now, the magic happens when Elise unpacks this experience, and applies it to the context she works in - Leadership Transformation.  Having a toolbox or a mental “file” of these exercises can be great…in fact, I have a whole online course about them. But as Elise and I discuss, having the wherewithal to bring one of these out in a session also takes some guts and some faith. You take some trust the team has in you and burn it…risk it on an edgy experience…and hopefully you earn that trust back, with dividends, at the end of the unpacking. Also worth noting is that this is the second episode on the theme of “An experience is worth a thousand slides” when it comes to coaching executive mindset shifts... The first conversation was with Jeff Gothelf, most notably the co-author of Lean UX, where we talked about the Vase and Flowers exercise, another powerful eye-opener that I love very much. This episode is short and sweet, so without further delay, enjoy the conversation as much as I did. Momma Sanchez reflects on moments from David’s childhood when he was confronted with stuttering-related challenges, including school musicals, class presentations, and running for school government. David asks what led Momma Sanchez to gently push him to do some activities (like joining sports/clubs to make new friends) and allow him to quit at other times (like picking him up from school to avoid a class presentation). In the second QFT segment, the Sanchez duo try to come up with a rubric for how parents might think through these decisions with their children who stutter. Also, David argues in his “Word Switch” segment that everyone--parents, teachers, SLP’s, and people who stutter themselves--need to stop saying “can’t” when it comes to stuttering (e.g., “I can’t talk” “I can’t say that”). He provides alternative language for changing how we talk and think about stuttering.Lastly, the Sanchezes play another game of “The Sing’s Speech” the game where they sing famous literary works to famous tunes and have to guess which is which!-----BE A GUESTAre you a person who stutters (PWS)? David and Momma Sanchez are joined by school counselor (& wife/daughter-in-law) Amy Sanchez to talk about resilience and stuttering. In the first Quality Family Time they critique the societal messaging around resilience and discuss the role environmental influences play in the development of resilience. In the second QFT they focus on practical tips for parents, teachers, SLP’s, and allies in “building up” resilience in children who stutter. Building blocks include supportive parents/adults, a community of peers who stutter, successful role models who stutter, access to speech therapy and other support services, and more. This episode’s intermission is brought to you by “Imagine If…” which asks the audience to imagine if stuttering happened to your hearing instead of your speech. David discusses the merits of using “Imagine If…” questions as desensitization-themed conversation starters in support groups and in therapy sessions.David ends the show by challenging his guests in a game of “Pseu-real or Pseudo.” He plays 10 clips of himself stuttering; half of the clips include real stuttering and half of them include fake (pseudo) stuttering. Amy and Momma Sanchez have to tell which is which! They wrap up the game with a discussion on the potential therapeutic benefits of this desensitization game.-----Amy Sanchez is a licensed clinical social worker and School Counselor at a combined middle and high school. Momma Sanchez used to finish David’s sentences when he stuttered. He liked it. It wasn’t until adulthood that both of them learned that speech therapists and stuttering organizations recommend against this. In the first “Quality Family Time” they share their experiences, rationales, and ideological growth in how they think about finishing sentences for people who stutter. They also “Imagine If” they stopped stuttering today and how their lives would be different.Guests Drew and Stephanie Fleming join the show for the second QFT segment. Drew discusses his experiences of stuttering through elementary school, then having it disappear in middle school… only for his stutter to return in high school. Stephanie talks about her own growth as a mother and advocate for a son that stutters. Drew and Stephanie bring the hilarity in an improv (and potential therapy?) game of “Finish My Sentence” that ends with David and Momma Sanchez screaming ridiculous phrases at one another.-----Drew Fleming is a 20 year old college student from Maple Valley, WA.  He is an avid movie watcher and comic book reader when he's not working at his job at Chick-Fil-A. Stephanie Fleming is a stay at home mom to Drew and Davis.  She has been married to Kevin for 22 years.  Stephanie is originally from South Carolina, which will be very obvious as soon as she starts talking. -----BE A GUESTAre you a person who stutters (PWS)? Asking the right question in an #ESL class - Learning Begins with Curiosity - ESL teacher training. The English Language Institute (#ELI) at the College of Staten Island/The City University of New York (#CUNY) presents a short lecture about asking the right question in an #English class, by CUNY teacher, Ms. Erika Heppner. ESL teachers can suggest their students to register in our ESL program in New York City: https://www.csi.cuny.edu/campus-life/student-services/center-global-engagement/english-language-institute / elistudy@csi.cuny.edu. CLASS DESCRIPTION — LEARNING BEGINS WITH CURIOSITY The objective of this class presentation is to introduce ESL teachers to the Right Question Institute at #Harvard University and to provide a brief explanation of the Question Forming Technique (#QFT). Using the QFT encourages students to ask their own questions. In this way, students figure out what they want to know. Instead of always being asked the question, they learn that they can also ask and they learn how to ask. The QFT is a group experience that helps students to better comprehend and understand what they are learning. It encourages curiosity, which in turn makes students active learners. The webinar will be organized like this: Part 1: Introduce the importance of encouraging students to ask questions—Open-Ended and Close-Ended Questions. Part 2: Review what viewers will learn during webinar: a) QFT: Rules for Producing Questions b) Steps in Using QFT in an ESL Classroom c) Links to QFT resources on the Right Question Institute's Website CUNY presenter: Erika Heppner Erika Heppner is a full-time lecturer in the Humanities Department at LaGuardia Community College/CUNY where she teaches courses in public speaking, speech communication for non-native speakers of English and intercultural communication. Prior to her tenure at LaGuardia, she taught ESL in the Loyola Intensive English Program at Loyola University in New Orleans and from 2010-2011 served as its director. Ms. Heppner has over 25 years of classroom teaching experience and has also taught English and video production in Spain, the Czech Republic, Mexico and England. Ms. Heppner earned a Master of Arts in English Teaching and a Master of Fines Arts in Drama and Communication, both from the University of New Orleans. She is an avid cyclist who enjoys traveling and adventure. She has recently planted a vegetable garden in her backyard where she struggles with hornworms and other unwelcomed insects.

Quantum field theory (QFT) is the universal language of theoretical physics, underlying the Standard Model of elementary particles, the physics of the early Universe and a host of condensed matter phenomena such as phase transitions and superconductivity. A great achievement of 20th-century physics was the understanding of weakly coupled quantum field theories where interactions can be treated as small perturbations of otherwise freely moving particles. Critical challenges for the 21st century include solving the problem of strong coupling and mapping the whole space of consistent QFTs. In this lecture, I will overview the bootstrap approach, the idea that theory space can be determined from the general principles of symmetry and quantum mechanics. This strategy provides a new unifying language for QFT and has allowed researchers to make predictions for physical observables even in strongly coupled theories. I will illustrate the general framework in a few examples, ranging from the concrete (boiling water) to the abstract (supersymmetric theories in various spacetime dimensions).

As you'll hear Luz say in the episode, QFT “offers a little more joy in a demanding profession” and she quotes journalist Clive Thompson when he says “How should you respond when you get powerful new tools for finding answers? Think of harder questions”. The Harvard Education publishing group says…. [The] Right Question Institute have developed [a technique] called the Question Formulation Technique (QFT). This technique helps students learn how to produce their own questions, improve them, and strategize on how to use them. In the classroom, teachers have seen how the same process manages to develop students' divergent (brainstorming), convergent (categorizing and prioritizing), and metacognitive (reflective) thinking abilities in a very short period of time. **For more information visit Right Question Institute Run Time: 16 min, 46 sec To find the full transcript for this episode, click HERE

Daniel Wohlfarth (Bonn) gives a talk at the MCMP Colloquium (30 January, 2013) titled "On the Conception of Fundamentality of Time-Asymmetries in Physics". Abstract: The goal of my talk is to argue for two connected proposals: Firstly: I shall show that a new conceptual understanding of the term ‘fundamentality’ - in the context of time-asymmetries - is applicable to cosmology and in fact shows that classical and semi-classical cosmology should be understood as time-asymmetric theories. Secondly: I will show that the proposed conceptual understanding of ‘fundamentality’, applied to cosmological models with a hyperbolical curved spacetime structure, provides a new understanding of the origin of the (quantum) thermodynamic time-asymmetry. In the proposed understanding a ‘quantum version’ of the second law can be formulated. This version is explicitly time-asymmetric (decreasing entropy with decreasing time coordinates and visa versa). Moreover, the physical effectiveness of the time-asymmetry will be based on the crucial Einstein equations and additional calculations in QFT. Therefore, the physical effectiveness of the time-asymmetry will be independent of an ontic interpretation of ‘entropy’ itself. The whole account is located in the set of semi classical quantum cosmology (without an attempt to quantize gravity) and depends on the definability of any cosmic time coordinates.

Igor Khavkine (Utrecht) gives a talk at the MCMP workshop "Quantum Gravity in Perspective" (31 May-1 June, 2013) titled "Gravity. An exercise in quantization". Abstract: The quantization of General Relativity (GR) is an old and chellenging prob- lem that is in many ways still awaiting a satisfactory solution. GR is a partic- ularly complicated field theory in several respects: non-linearity, gauge invari- ance, dynamibal causal structure, renormalization, singularities, infared effects. Fortunately, much progress has been made on each of these fronts. Our under- standing of these problems has evolved greatly over the past century, together with our understandig of quantum field theory (QFT) in general. Today, the state of the art in QFT knows how to address each of these challenges, as they occur in isolation in ohter field theories. There is still an active research program aiming to combine the relevant methods and apply them to GR. But, at the very least, the problem of the quantization of GR can be formulated as a well defined mathematical question. On the other hand, quantum GR also faces a different set of obstacles: timelessness, non-renormalizability, naturality, unification, which reflect, not its technical difficulty, but rather the aesthetic and philosophical preferences of practing theoretical physicists. I will briefly discuss how the technical state of the art and a scientifically conservative philosophical position make these obstacles irrelevant. Time per- mitting, I will also briefly touch on some aspects of the state of technical state of the art that have turned the quantization of GR into a (still challenging) exercise: covariant Poisson structure, BV-BRST treatment of gauge theories, deformation quantization, Epstein-Glaser renormalization.

Meinard Kuhlmann (Mainz) gives a talk at the MCMP Colloquium (10 December, 2014) titled "A Trope Bundle Interpretation of Algebraic Quantum Field Theory". Abstract: Algebraic quantum field theory (AQFT) is a conceptually lucid reformulation of the conventional theory of quantum fields. I consider AQFT to be the appropriate starting point for ontological considerations about QFT because, like the philosophical discipline of ontology, AQFT strives for a clear, justified and parsimonious separation of basic and derived classes of entities. I argue that the one-category theory of particularized properties or 'tropes', which analyses all other entities in terms of the basic category of tropes, yields the most appropriate ontological reading of AQFT. Among other things I will show that trope ontology and AQFT have essential structural similarities. I argue in particular that the trope-ontological conception of objects as bundles of tropes is related to the pivotal net structure of observable algebras in AQFT. Eventually, I show that the identification of trope-like entities in AQFT is best achieved via the notion of representations in the algebraic theory of superselection sectors, where the notion of inequivalent irreducible representations allows for a neat distinction of essential and non-essential properties/tropes.

To determine whether QuantiFERON®-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT) can contribute to the diagnosis of active tuberculosis (TB) in children in a high-burden setting and to assess the performance of QFT and tuberculin skin test (TST) in a prospective cohort of TB suspect children compared to adults with confirmed TB in Tanzania. Sensitivity and specificity of QFT and TST for diagnosing active TB as well as indeterminate QFT rates and IFN-γ levels were assessed in 211 TB suspect children in a Tanzanian district hospital and contrasted in 90 adults with confirmed pulmonary TB. Sensitivity of QFT and TST in children with confirmed TB was 19% (5/27) and 6% (2/31) respectively. In adults sensitivity of QFT and TST was 84% (73/87) and 85% (63/74). The QFT indeterminate rate in children and adults was 27% and 3%. Median levels of IFN-γ were lower in children than adults, particularly children
