Kevin Cummings joins the show to share how a retired dentist answered the call to become a deacon. The call doesn't end there; Deacon Kevin devotes his time to the pro-life ministry, Deacons of Hope. It serves not only the unborn but also the poor, the imprisoned, the marginalized, the oppressed, the sick, and the aged, regardless of sex, race, nationality, or creed. Episode highlights: 1. The father's role in a family 2. What is pro-life? 3. Empowering women while affirming life.
The Pro-Life cause is near and dear to many Catholics' hearts. Yet, a lot of us, with good intention, write a check, pray, and hope that's enough. Here's a great story about a group of Deacons who set out to do more. Join me in this episode as Deacon Dr. Kevin Cummings shares the story of Deacons of Hope. While based in Kansas, they are looking to expand. They created an amazing way to help women who were considering abortion; they support, treat, and train these women for success in life. Deacon Kevin also shares some great life advice for those of us who aren't in that "second career" phase yet. Our shows today are themed around the holiday the nation just celebrated yesterday; but Thanksgiving looks a bit different depending on where you stand, so from Equal Rights and Justice, Building Bridges host Mimi Rosenberg connects the struggles of native peoples both here in the U.S. and in Palestine. And from America Works, an interview with Mike Williams, a dirt track auto racer at the famed Ransomville Speedway in western New York, interviewed at his home on the Tuscarora Nation reservation. Today's Labor History in 2:00 is actually from July 11, 1968, the day that the American Indian Movement began at a meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota, when a group of 200 Native Americans gathered together to discuss a response to the US governments' history of broken treaties and the devastating consequences on Native peoples. We wrap up with the Labor Heritage Power Hour, which talked with Kevin Cummings, a member of the Machinists Union for 35 years; Kevin is also a Native American who traces his lineage to both the Lumbee and Cherokee peoples, which means that he's spent his life fighting for rights, whether it was his fellow workers or his Native brothers and sisters. We end the show with Kevin's powerful song Stolen Angels, about the many indigenous women who are still missing. Please help us build sonic solidarity by clicking on the share button below. We've hit the end of a fantastic season. Here's a recap of some of the highlights over the last season of content. The first season highlighted people of color in sales, and season two focused on people of color who've thrived in sales. And season three? Stay tuned to find out! We've had great takeaways from several of our guests: For example, Jose Quiroz uses his Mexican heritage to help him in sales (and found out his grandfather was a salesman.) Felix Montelara showed the importance of focusing on your audience is critical for salespeople. Amanda Abella finds success in sales thanks to her heritage and family. Simon Tecle made sure he was a leader in his sales role, and Wendell Jordan Jr. discussed the importance of overcoming cultural bias in the sales industry. Donald himself broke down his experience as the first in his family to join the sales community Ruben Alvarez leverages his color without abusing it, and Patrick Carter gave us several tips to advance our careers. There are many powerful stories of people of color thriving in sales: Oprah Winfrey and Harriet Tubman were two of the salespeople ever to exist, even if they weren't traditional “salespeople.” Kevin Cummings made more money as a salesman than his cousin (who was a doctor.) DeJuan Brown fell into sales without meaning to, and it's lead to an incredibly successful career. Lin Hart spoke about Reginald F. Lewis, the richest black man in the world, and what he did to get there. Selling in Color will take a two-week break, returning in October for another season of great content. The theme? Selling skills, strategies, tips, and ideas from fellow salespeople of color that they use to help in their sales efforts and that you can use in yours! It's a season you won't want to miss. This episode is brought to you in part by Skipio. Are you sick of crickets? As a salesperson, the pain of reaching out with phone calls or emails and not receiving a response is real. Did you wake up one day and think, “wow, I really want to be a salesperson!” Yeah, I didn't think so. But even if it wasn't your childhood aspiration, sales is a great industry that has the opportunity for growth and compensation many people look for, even to the point where you make as much as a doctor! Today's episode of Selling in Color features Kevin Cummings, a man who has sold in multiple industries and found the sales success we're all searching for. Kevin had no intentions of becoming a salesperson. After working for years towards a B.S. in Biology, Kevin realized his senior year he had no desire to be a doctor. Because of his personality, his friends encouraged him to work in pharmaceutical sales. However, after being rejected by multiple companies and organizations, Kevin felt dismayed and disheartened. Eleven months after graduating, Kevin got a call from Grainger, and they were looking to hire 30 sales reps for a salesforce expansion. Kevin knew this was his chance. But luck was not on his side. On the day of his interview, there was a terrible blizzard. Halfway to the interview, Kevin realized he left his wallet at home and was unable to pay for parking. Desperate, Kevin illegally parked next to a Chase bank, hoping he could get money to pay. He parks, only to be approached by the police. He explained the situation, and the officer told him to leave his car parked illegally while he grabbed money. (And wished him luck on his interview.) Kevin got to the interview and entered a panel. He ended up speaking to the hiring manager, who then introduced him to the regional director. He got the job three days later. Kevin joins the sales profession. He got his first promotion at Grainger after two years, but his new position required an entirely different sales technique from his previous role. He now had to be strategic. He was expected to research and be a trusted advisor to his accounts, not just a salesperson. It took him four months before he began to be successful, but he learned a great new skill set. Kevin has since worked in many sales roles. After leaving Granger, Kevin sold medical supplies. When he was interviewing for that role, he had to explain why he should be hired with no medical sales experience. He explained he wanted to marry his sales accolades and experience with the biology degree that's been catching dust on his top shelf. And they hired him. He worked there for almost three years before his current job at LinkedIn. The big takeaway Kevin wants listeners to know? Sales is the one profession that transcends every single industry. While you might not have a passion for sales, find your passion and see where sales fits in. You can make legitimate money in sales, so match your passion with a lucrative career for an all-around great solution. To reach out to Kevin, connect with him on LinkedIn. Scoring a meeting with the decision-maker can be challenging, but creating allies within the target company can be your strategy for making progress. Sometimes all it takes to get past the gatekeeper is to build a solid relationship with them. In today's episode of The Sales Evangelist, we're going to do just that with the help of today's guest Kevin Cummings. Kevin has worked in many different sales spaces, from industrial to medical to tech. .Throughout all his sales interactions, Kevin feels most confident when revisiting offices. But even if it's the second, third, or fourth visit, he'll sometimes end up talking to people who act like it's his first (even if he's spoken to them several times.) To avoid that, Kevin makes an active effort to loop those people into the conversation. Make them feel as important as possible because while they aren't the “decision-maker,” they can make your job tremendously more difficult. Make connections with the gatekeeper: Ask them what the best method is is to talk with them. Then, stop talking and let them identify how they want to interact with you. Many salespeople know the gatekeeper is essential, yet we treat them as if they aren't. You can't always determine who has the influence, so be nice to everyone. Beyonce says “hello” and “thank you” to everyone she meets. Be like Beyonce. When you're genuine with someone, they can feel it. But, conversely, being fake won't generate the results you want. Don't be afraid to interact with the gatekeeper. Especially in the tech and medical fields, the actual decision-maker might not have the time or bandwidth to go out to lunch or have drinks with the salesperson. So why not do it with the gatekeeper? When Kevin does this, it's usually only about 15 minutes of business talk. The rest is just building a relationship and connection with the gatekeeper. While that person can't make the decision, they'll remember you and want to get you in contact with the person that can. Your ultimate goal? Make everyone in the office your champion and advocate. Help them, don't help yourself. Since Covid, many people in companies across the country have had to and continue to wear many hats. Don't try to sell immediately, and instead ask how you can take things off their plate. Be human, and do the thing that a good human would do. Don't put your title first. You might be a salesperson, but humanity comes before titles. Kevin's major takeaway? Understand that your customers' objective in their job is not to buy your product or service. Everything you do should be about them, not about you. National Sales Network, a nonprofit organization for black people in sales and marketing, has 17 chapters across the country. Visit the website to find networking events, skill workshops, and hiring opportunities on their website. To get in touch with Kevin, connect with him on LinkedIn. In addition to a multitude of major corporations and I realized that there has to be some significance there. What is COVID-19 stopping you from doing or working on that you would have been working on? 7:34 John We have had a number of events playing you know, that'd be an advocate for the demographic of people who have innate talent, abilities, willingness and desire to be a part of contributing to the overall competitiveness of the state, and not being able to have those engagements to programs and events that we have also opportunities for these men and women who have real capital at risk. They've put their blood sweat and tears in their business enterprises. What are some other barriers that you think we have to face and some ways to remove some of those other barriers? 15:09 John I gotta get back to your question about where businesses where growth is for businesses or whatever. Right, but the barriers are hindering that, right? So we have a number of very talented engineers in New Jersey. So in the professional service route, as we stay with the government or the public sector, there's a procurement process where you don't really have to go out to bid in the professional services. So that means engineers, architects, your environmentalist, your fund management firms, people who manage money, who do bond underwriting, who do accounting services, and even in New Jersey, there's a certain You can be a seasoned CPA, and you have to have a certain designation, to audit municipal records. And although you're paying tax dollars, they're excluded for my opportunity, because he's in here barriers, juniors are funding our elected officials campaigns, or they're given preference but blacks are voting for them. What does the role of company boards mean ensuring equitable participation and supplier diversity? 20:51 John Well, one guy that I really was more than one but I mentioned John Rogers and Melanie Hobson. I ask your listeners to Google them and see what they're doing around the country. They sit on boards, and they're not spooked by the door when they're on the board. They're they're fighting and championing the value proposition that diversity brings that black men and women could bring to some of these boards to get them more accountable and getting them to understand that I'm supplying diversity and inclusion is not about that mosaic is about really leveraging the talent to get the best value We are a diverse nation, New Jersey is one of the most diverse states in America. And we're not leveraging diversity, for our overall benefit and our competitiveness is the haves and have nots. Who are some leaders who seem to be getting it right? 25:06 John We have people like Kevin Cummings, Domenick A Cama of Investors Bank, who not only is their heart in the right place, but they're people executing former president of Wells Fargo, Brenda Ross Dulan here in New Jersey, phenomenal job. What advice do you have for minorities who want to start a business and it doesn't have to be necessarily in this context of pandemic but just starting in business in general, and then for those who want to move up until leadership ranks in their organization? 31:06 John Well, take the leadership part first, there's a number of things, it's going to enable you to be effective in a leadership role. One, you got to be a good listener. 2 you have to have an understanding of the job that's above you, and understand this below you and definitely have a full understanding of your ability to execute the job at hand. Tina of tinatheartist.com wrote with her recipes for the sensory table: PLAY DOUGH 1 cup flour 1/2 cup salt 1 cup water 1 Tbsp vegetable oil 1 Tbsp cream of tartar (optional) Heat in heavy saucepan. Cook stirring constantly until forms a ball. Turn out onto floured surface and knead until desired consistency. Store in plastic bags or airtight container in refrigerator. CORNSTARCH PLAYDOUGH 2 lbs baking soda 1 lb cornstarch 1 1/4 cups water Cook until consistency of mashed potatoes. Can add more water if needed later. SILLY PUTTY 2 parts white glue 1 part liquid starch food coloring Mix until it achieves the 'right' texture. If the silly putty is too sticky then it's too gluey, add more starch. If the silly putty won't stick to itself then it needs more glue. Store in airtight container in fridge. OOBLIK Water and cornstarch Can't remember the proportions, play around with it. It should flow like a liquid but when you press it feel like a solid, you can roll a ball in your palms for example.
