In this episode of The Rocky Garza Show, I sat down with my good friend Ruben Alvarez—founder of Marketing Hunters, author of Brand Sharks, and someone I deeply respect for his raw honesty and personal evolution. His mantra is clear: sales bring you money, but brand brings you legacy. But today's conversation wasn't about branding. It was about something even deeper—identity, discipline, and what happens when you strip away the noise to finally hear what matters.About Ruben AlvarezRuben Alvarez is the Founder of The Marketing Hunters, a company that specializes in Branding and Market Positioning. His experience in Manufacturing, B2B sales and indirect marketing for nearly a decade allows him to create dynamic and powerful brands for others. Ruben was born in California, but migrated to El Paso when he saw the potential to help the city grow into Texas' next big city. Through events like Thrive IN Your City and The Moment Conference, he has helped bring the business community together to collaborate on the growth that is to come in El Paso.He is the Author of the International Book Brand Sharks: Unstoppable Strategies from Industry Leaders, a book endorsed by Tim Storey. In the book, he encourages new business owners and entrepreneurs to create unfair advantages for themselves. In becoming successful, it is critical to create in the mind of your potential client that you have something unique that cannot be found anywhere else, other than with you. Brand Sharks has been called The #1 Book For Young Entrepreneurs Looking to Grow their Brands.Ruben's story has been featured in Forbes, NY Weekly, El Dario De Queretaro, and many other news outlets for his disruptive Branding methods. What Discipline Really Looks LikeRuben and I dove into what the last year has looked like for him—and it's been a season of real transformation. He's been hitting the gym daily, eating clean, and making hard decisions about what stays and what goes in his life. But he didn't romanticize it. In fact, he admitted that almost every day he still has the same thought: “I don't want to do this.” And yet, he does it anyway. Because it's not about motivation—it's about building the muscle of consistency. That kind of discipline doesn't show up overnight. It's earned.Shifting From Self-Doubt to Self-DisciplineWe talked about the negative loops we've both found ourselves in—thoughts like “Why bother?” or “I'm not good enough.” But Ruben made a point I loved: once he got clear on his why, those thoughts didn't vanish, but they lost their grip. Now, the battle isn't about self-worth—it's about staying committed, even when the feeling isn't there. Because when the why is strong, the resistance becomes background noise.Personal Conviction Meets Professional AmbitionOne of my favorite parts of this episode was exploring the space where personal conviction meets professional ambition. When those two align, that's where the real fuel comes from. For Ruben, that alignment has meant getting serious about his lifestyle—not just for his business, but for the person he's becoming. He's not building a brand—he's building a way of being.Giving Up to GrowOver the last two years, Ruben made some big decisions: he sold his house, gave up expensive habits, and traded comfort for clarity. Not because he had to. But because he chose to.He realized that most of what was “normal” in his life—extra subscriptions, extra responsibilities, extra stuff—was cluttering his mind and stealing his ability to think. And for him, thinking clearly is his edge. So he simplified. He got lean. And he created space to breathe. Why Most People Fail at ChangeWe talked about why 84% of people give up their New Year's resolutions by January 21st. It's not because they lack willpower—it's because they only tried to change the action without changing the thought, the energy, or the focus. But Ruben didn't just change what he was doing. He cleared space to think about why he was doing it. That alignment between what we say we want and what we actually tolerate? That's where real change starts.Your Life Is What You TolerateLet me be real: Ruben hit a point where he had to decide if he was going to keep putting up with things that didn't align with his vision. He made a choice to raise his standards—not out of pride, but out of purpose. He said it perfectly: “Everything around me is either going to step up—or I need to walk away.”That hits. Because whether it's habits, people, or even our own internal patterns—what we tolerate becomes our reality.Breaking Down to Break ThroughRuben shared a moment I won't forget. He told the story of being alone in his garage, going through a divorce, unsure how to make it all work. He put his phone down, hit record, and captured himself crying—because he knew he never wanted to forget what it felt like to break. That moment didn't give him clarity—it gave him the need to create it. And brick by brick, action by action, he started rebuilding. Not from hype. From honesty. The Simpler the Life, the More You Can GiveAt one point, Ruben said:“The less that I need, the more I can give.”That stuck with me. Because when we declutter—our minds, our schedules, our bank accounts—we create space to be generous. To think clearly. To lead well. This episode reminded me: simplicity isn't scarcity. Simplicity is strength. You're Not Leaving People BehindOne of the most powerful truths we landed on was this: when you change your life, you're not “leaving people behind.” You're choosing alignment.Everyone gets to choose their path. And when you choose yours with intention, not everyone will come with you—and that's okay. You don't have to explain yourself. You don't have to apologize. Because when you start living like the person you're becoming, you finally start becoming the person you've been trying to be all along.Resources MentionedJoin my free LIVE leadership workshop: https://www.rockygarza.com/confidenceRuben's website: https://www.themarketinghunters.com/ Ruben's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamrubenalvarez/ Ruben's book: https://www.amazon.com/Brand-Sharks-Unstoppable-Strategies-Industry/dp/B09VWJ6VDN?ref_=ast_author_dp Key Timestamps00:00 – Welcome to The Rocky Garza Show00:10 – Meet Ruben Alvarez, Founder of Marketing Hunters00:23 – Ruben's Story: From El Paso to Branding Legacy01:04 – Sales Brings Money, Brand Brings Legacy02:34 – Starting the Real Conversation03:03 – Discipline Without Desire: Ruben's Gym Journey05:20 – Rewiring the Negative Thought Loop09:33 – Where Personal Conviction Meets Professional Ambition13:32 – Simplicity as a Superpower17:46 – Clarity Through Decluttering18:36 – Tolerating Excellence & Raising Standards21:30 – Choosing the Life You Want (Even If It's Lonely)26:52 – The Breakdown Before the Breakthrough30:08 – Faith Over Friction: Action with Belief32:43 – Closing Thoughts and Workshop InviteTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations

Ruben Alvarez is an American Entrepreneur and Founder of The Marketing Hunters, a Marketing and Advertising Agency working with B2B and B2C customers to grow their digital marketing and create dynamic and powerful brands. He is the author of the international book, Brand Sharks: Unstoppable strategies from industry leaders, which has been featured in Forbes and other news outlets. Ruben is also a public speaker and has had his own Ted X Talk on the importance of building hard skills to create long-lasting confidence. He understands the benefits of a distribution model and that retargeting will deliver a higher sales outcome. Ruben teaches that sales will bring you money, but your brand will leave a legacy. After working for a manufacturing company for eight years and not making it to Partner, Ruben got a coach on board and they started a digital marketing company. They soon realized that there were a lot of people willing to do social media marketing. Creating content and putting out posts with not much thought behind them. They started focusing on doing things differently to see what people are really looking for. They realized about three years ago that people were starting to make a big push on branding and they set up a branding system. When it comes to different outlets that people have available nowadays and how they position themselves, Ruben dove into penetrating those tiny markets that people might be browsing. Seeing different avenues pop up like Tiktok, and then short-form videos. Instagram doing shops, and the metaverse. Not to exploit them but to see how they can help people grow in those particular ways. To identify these new avenues for people to grow. That's how they have been successful. They are able to target these things before anybody else, being first to market to really benefit not only themselves but also their customers.Whether you're niching down, like some people only focusing on digital marketing for certain industries, or only do social media marketing or SEO'ing. Clients might not even realize what they need, or they may need a mixture of things and that is where Ruben and his team come in. Knowing what platform will be a better fit and is willing to put in the time and invest in creating the content. Putting automation in place can help not only you as a digital agency owner, but help run your business and help your clients track their metrics and the efforts that they're putting in, to see if they're actually bearing fruit. Success on social media is largely correlated to one sole platform: Instagram. While other platforms are important, Instagram is the primary medium for anyone looking to build their brand and grow a following. In today's episode of the Be Better podcast, Kim and Donald are joined by the founder of The Marketing Hunters, Ruben Alvarez, to discuss Instagram best practices, tips, and how you can use it with success. Why is Instagram so important? Every platform has a unique ability to brand its user, but Instagram (at least for now) carries more weight and credibility than other platforms. Instagram's influence developed because it went uncompeted for years. However, due to Tik Tok, that influence is slowly being chipped away. Common Instagram mistakes: Don't assume: What some people do to find success won't automatically work for you. Not using new tools and technology within the platform before it's past the early adoption point. Instagram is entirely perception-based, meaning once someone starts commenting, more people will follow. Do things that encourage commenters. Master the Instagram Reel: Ruben's major tip: Create more videos. Every popular video has a three-second hook to draw the audience, and you should master yours. Almost every single video you first create will look stupid to you, but keep going. As you refine your skills, you'll be able to make more professional videos while retaining the creativity and authenticity you had in the beginning. Decide on your brand before making content. Understand what you're comfortable creating, and recognizing that boundary will prevent you from creating content that compromises your brand and values. Remember, content needs to entertain. You can take simple steps to make your content more watchable and entertaining. Do things the way you want, but your content should resonate with the people watching it. When you follow a variety of people, you'll see inspiration and ideas that can help you think of more content to grow your brand. Ruben's advice for his younger self? Adopt faster; you never know if you're going to get one or 10,000 followers as a result. With branding, you should never compete with anyone. If you're trying to grow an account, do things differently than other people. In this episode of the Success Fundamentals Podcast, Ruben Alvarez is joining Kris Sykes and Brian Goldsack. He is the founder of The Marketing Hunters and the host of the #INFORTHEKILL podcast that made it to the Top 5 Podcasts to listen to during COVID19. Ruben shares the whole concept behind branding and what drove him to be a branding expert. He explains the idea that “the brand precedes the sale” and that gaining credibility is never original, it is simply borrowed from someone else's success. Ruben also shares how empowered he feels when he becomes comfortable doing what others are not willing to do for him to achieve his success.Stay tuned to hear more about Ruben as he shares the different ways branding helps you and your business succeed.HIGHLIGHTSDelivering an experience is now the focal point of brandingA powerful brand leverages the principles of attentionAll credibility is borrowedFollow in the right people's footsteps of successQUOTESRuben: “We work with this person and we work with this person and we're delivering this experience of we're relevant and we're new and we're not going to let you feel like we're this old company that just basically is outdated and irrelevant.”Ruben: “All credibility is borrowed from somebody else. We've hit the end of a fantastic season. Here's a recap of some of the highlights over the last season of content. The first season highlighted people of color in sales, and season two focused on people of color who've thrived in sales. And season three? Stay tuned to find out! We've had great takeaways from several of our guests: For example, Jose Quiroz uses his Mexican heritage to help him in sales (and found out his grandfather was a salesman.) Felix Montelara showed the importance of focusing on your audience is critical for salespeople. Amanda Abella finds success in sales thanks to her heritage and family. Simon Tecle made sure he was a leader in his sales role, and Wendell Jordan Jr. discussed the importance of overcoming cultural bias in the sales industry. Donald himself broke down his experience as the first in his family to join the sales community Ruben Alvarez leverages his color without abusing it, and Patrick Carter gave us several tips to advance our careers. There are many powerful stories of people of color thriving in sales: Oprah Winfrey and Harriet Tubman were two of the salespeople ever to exist, even if they weren't traditional “salespeople.” Kevin Cummings made more money as a salesman than his cousin (who was a doctor.) DeJuan Brown fell into sales without meaning to, and it's lead to an incredibly successful career. Lin Hart spoke about Reginald F. Lewis, the richest black man in the world, and what he did to get there. Selling in Color will take a two-week break, returning in October for another season of great content. The theme? Selling skills, strategies, tips, and ideas from fellow salespeople of color that they use to help in their sales efforts and that you can use in yours! It's a season you won't want to miss. Very easy and simple to understand. Hard to implement though. Thank you again to everyone. Here's to many more episodes and great guests! www.rubenalvarez.com
There are certain things and ideas your mind thinks up whenever you are fearful of something. It is not always jumping out of a plane or swimming with sharks either. It can be going to the gym, waking up earlier or making a sales call. Right when you are about to do it, you get the thought that contradicts you taking action. It might even just tell you to prolong it. You shouldn't. You should do it in that moment and do it for longer than you even want to. Run the extra half mile, make an additional 5 calls after you promised to only make 10. Outdo yourself even by your own standards. That is what Muhmmed Ali used to say. He only counts the sit ups once he wants to quit. Those are the only ones that matter. www.rubenalvarez.com
In your mind, you know what you want. You know exactly how much money, how many followers or what position you want at your place of work. Here is the issue with all of that. You will one day get it. When this happens, what will you do after? Have you stopped to think about that? In that moment, you might have only wanted a $2 raise and instead you get promoted to VP of Sales, making 2X your normal salary. Amazing right? Will you coast on this title? Will the money go to your head? It is scary to think that most people are not prepared for something miraculous to happen to them. This is why all the lottery winners usually spend all the money and are broke within a year. They thought they could win, but never really thought it would happen so soon. Be prepared. Great things are about to happen in your life. Will you be ready? https://www.rubenalvarez.com/
At the end of the day, sales leaders should be able to do what they have their team to do. Because sometimes you're telling them to do one thing when you do something entirely different. Today on The Sales Evangelist, Donald is joined by Ruben Alvarez to discuss why team leaders should lead by example, not just through talking. Ruben learned to lead by example while leading a team. If you want somebody to do what you want them to, you're going to see resistance unless they see you do it as well. Sales leaders might be setting unrealistic expectations for their team and not know it because they're no longer selling. Some people have been selling for 30 years, but with only one year of experience. Because they're drawing their management from only one year of actual selling, they might not be leading as effectively as they could be if they were up-to-date on the best sales practices. If you're not willing to get on the phone with your team and teach them how to close, you'll never see sales come in. The process isn't always how you want it to be, but how it needs to be. What should team leaders do to practice leading by example? Hone your skills. Just like in any other industry, you encourage and motivate through showing. If you do something effectively and can either demonstrate or communicate how you did it effectively, people will want to follow you. Many sales leaders are afraid to demonstrate because it makes them seem vulnerable, which leads to the team not viewing you as a leader. But leaders inspire hope. You can be vulnerable and have people chew you out, but closing the deal is all that matters and all that the sales team wants to see. Finally, don't compromise the values you know your team has. You know what each person is capable of, and you know what's best for them. Company owners have an idea of what sales should look like. But their experiences might not align with what the sales team needs to do to be successful. If that is the case, stick up for what you know will work, or you might lose the respect of your team. Ruben's final takeaway: If you're afraid to pick up the phone, just admit it and pick up the phone. See what happens. Regardless of what ends up happening, you'll feel better about it. People of color in sales tend to stand out. Because only 20% of sellers aren't white, people of color can use this to their advantage as they navigate their selling careers. But while you can use it to your benefit, you can also abuse it. In today's episode of Selling in Color, the founder of The Marketing Hunter, Ruben Alvarez, shares how people of color can leverage your color without abusing it. There's power in being an underdog. While people might not like it, there is power in being an underdog. And that perfectly describes Ruben's approach to sales. When companies first came under fire for lack of employee diversity, there was a period where people of color could quickly get a job as a “token” person of color. Even if that applies to you, use the opportunity to work hard and break the glass ceiling to make it easier for more people of color to join the organization. Ruben appropriately used his color to his advantage. Ruben's parents came to the United States illegally, and he can't change that. What he can do is make the most of the opportunity and create opportunities for others. His parents got their citizenship soon after emigrating to the United States. It showed him that if you're going to do something, do it right. He uses those experiences and history to motivate him to persevere and work harder to achieve his goals. How has Ruben has seen success in his career without relying on his race? You have to find places where you can associate and mingle with people of color but in a professional way. Ruben sees a big problem in taking advantage of people who offer discounts or specials for people of color. If you need it, accept it. But if you support other people of color, you wouldn't take revenue from them if you need it. Know when to give back because eventually, stuff will come back to you. Build a genuine connection with somebody and not just say, “Hey, you know what, I'm going to do this for them right now. Because later on, I expect them to give me something.” Ruben's advice to people who've thought about quitting their sales career: Ruben's boss was verbally abusive, and nobody wanted to deal with him. But because Ruben put up with this boss longer than anyone else, he got a lot of credibility. There are generally two reasons to quit sales: you aren't making enough money or mentally unable to handle the job. If you aren't making enough money, just learn how to sell better. But if you can't handle the stress, just keep pushing through. No job gives you more security, empowerment, or the mentality that opens up doors for your next opportunity. His main message is, "Sales will bring you money, but the brand will bring you a legacy."When you create a brand, you give yourself freedom. You no longer need to worry about losing customers, pricing discounts and other minimal issues. The brand is not for you. It is for your business, your customers and your employees. They need to see you win. A well put together brand will tell your story without you ever opening your mouth to speak. Customers will repeat the story for you and explain to others who you are and what you stand for. A business that cannot replicate the sales it did last month without sales people is doomed. The more time and energy you invest into promoting yourself, the faster a business will grow. The everyday consider prefers to know a person's backstory and reasons for building a business. When you run an ad, there is only a product to judge. When you promote the person, there is so much more to relate with other than a feature. That is where the true sales making machine is. It is in the brand. It is in the person who is able to relate to others. Show the human side to your business. The old days are gone. The new days of marketing and brand are upon us.
