With some artists the creative spark doesn't stop just because the guitar gets put down. That's Annie Williams. Anyone who knows her would say the same. From her self-built straw bale house to her hand-sewn performance costumes to her deeply personal songs, the muse follows her everywhere she goes, and does its best to keep up. She just released her debut album, Visitor, seven years and one lifetime in the making. Produced with Bill Reynolds of Band of Horses, it's at once playful and fresh and, like Annie, pretty damn original. The cover of the record is a photograph of the artist jumping through a ring of fire on her motorcycle. The fire was real, the ring was homemade. The Morse Code is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In this thought-provoking conversation we talk about some of the more notable moments in a career nosing into its twentieth year, like, say, her arrival in Nashville. She was living in Wyoming and a touring christian hip hop group saw her play and invited her to roll with them back to Tennessee. I mean of course. We discuss how her decision to break away from her small business designing handmade bags dovetailed unexpectedly with her first publishing deal, and how that led to sync licenses on several TV shows. And you might be hard pressed to get her to admit it, but Annie is an actor, and a good one. She was approached to star in the film A Funeral for Lightning directed by Emily Kai Bock, which premiered at TIFF and went on to win the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film at the LA Film Festival. Like many of her opportunities, it was gifted, not sought. There's a word for people like Annie Williams and that word is autodidact. She teaches herself to do things and then she does those things at her own speed in a sort of secret dance with the world around her. Its an orchestration of energy, at once mysterious and inevitable. There's so much I won't tell you about, so you can discover it yourself. I guess I should say she plays an unreleased song live in the studio.  Emily. Listen:I hope you take a moment to listen to or watch episode #141 of the Morse Code Podcast. Drone technology is evolving at a rapid pace. Will we see a future where unmanned aerial vehicles replace the traditional crop duster? Likely not for a number of practical reasons as well as the technology advancements being made in manned agricultural aviation. A more likely scenario is where drones compliment airplanes (as well as terrestrial application units) for greater precision, reduced product application, and improved production. In this forward looking episode Damian sits down with Bill Reynolds of Leading Edge Aerial Technology, Andrew Moore with National Ag Aviation Association, and Mike Dipaola CCO of Taranis. She was most recently seen in I Care A Lot on Netflix, starring Rosamund Pike and Dianne Wiest, and leading the cast of the December release Modern Persuasion. Other recent credits include Netflix's Orange Is The New Black as Zelda; along with The Walking Dead, Supernatural, ABC's Nashville, FOX's The Exorcist, and Showtime's 3rd season of David Lynch's Twin Peaks. Films include Two Weeks' Notice, Last Holiday, The Upside of Anger, Mr. Holland's Opus, Urban Legend, Four Rooms, 88 Minutes, Urban Legend and Vanilla Sky. Alicia is also well known to Hallmark Channel audiences for her Christmas movies, beginning with 2013's A Very Merry Mixup; her eighth annual holiday film for the network, Christmas Tree Lane, which she produced, wrote the story for, and featured two of Witt's original Christmas songs, was released for the 2020 holiday season. Witt co-produced her next album, The Conduit, with Jordan Lehning and Bill Reynolds in Nashville TN, where she resides. Led by the first two singles, Chasing Shadows and Talk To You, the record comes out September 24th. A classically trained former competitive pianist, Alicia's music has been described as 'sharply personal, boldly melodic pop originals in the Carole King/Billy Joel vein' and 'touching lost-and-found love ballads' (Philadelphia Inquirer). Alicia has performed her original piano-driven pop music all over the world, including at the renowned Grand Ole Opry. Alicia has also opened for Ben Folds Five, Rachel Platten, and Jimmy Webb, to name a few. Her 2018 release, 15000 Days, was produced by Grammy-winning producer Jacquire King (James Bay, Norah Jones, Kings of Leon, Dawes). Witt's previous album, Revisionary History, was produced by Ben Folds and was described as 'Grey Seal era Elton John, an alt-universe Fiona Apple, and a film noir chanteuse notching her nights in cigarette burns on the fallboard' (NASHVILLE SCENE). As a musical guest, Alicia has appeared on numerous shows including NPR's Weekend Edition, CBS' Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Queen Latifah Show, WGBH'S Open Studio on PBS, Good Day Nashville, KTLA's Morning Show, Good Morning Washington, and many performances on Hallmark's Home & Family Show. Alicia's music has been heard in numerous TV shows and movies over the past 10 years, including her ironic Christmas song 'I'm Not Ready for Christmas', which was featured in her Hallmark Christmas movie of the same name. Witt can add author to her resume with Small Changes, out October 5 2021 from Harper Horizons. The book is an inspiring, welcoming and simple yet effective guide to health, happiness and sustainable living. Instead of promoting a rigid diet, Small Changes will instead offer readers a stress-and-judgment-free approach for enacting easy, incremental changes across all areas of life. On stage, Witt starred in Neil LaBute's Tony nominated play Reasons to Be Pretty at the Geffen Playhouse. She also appeared at London's Royal Court theatre in Terry Johnson's Piano/Forte and made her West End debut with The Shape of Things. She has also performed at Williamstown Theatre Festival and is a regular participant in the 24-Hour Plays on Broadway and the 24-Hour Musicals off-Broadway. Other significant roles include Showtime's House of Lies, NBC's Friday Night Lights, CBS' The Mentalist and NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent. She spent 4 years on the CBS hit show Cybill and has also appeared on the HBO series The Sopranos, CBS's Two and a Half Men, Ally McBeal, and David Lynch's original Twin Peaks.

Treason has been a popular topic in 2021 and Alex looks at two of the most infamous treason trials in American History w/Ohio connections: the Aaron Burr Conspiracy and the trial of Axis Sally. We sit down with one of our favorite historians, David O. Stewart, to discuss the long forgotten Burr Conspiracy of 1806-07. David sharers insight into Burr's life after he shoots and kills Alexander Hamilton while serving as the Vice President. We follow Burr into the West and his travels to Marietta, Ohio and nearby Blennerhassett Island. Did Burr really try to start a new country in the Western US with him as its leader? David Stewart, the author of the excellent book American Emperor: Aaron Burr's Challenge to Jefferson's America (Simon & Schuster, 2012) walks us through the ill-fated Burr Conspiracy and the country's first "Trial of the Century" as the former VP and founding father is tried for treason. Buy David's book about Aaron Burr here: https://www.amazon.com/American-Emperor-Challenge-Jeffersons-America/dp/1439157200 We also visit with Bill Reynolds, historian from Marietta, Ohio's River Museum and Campus Martius Museum about Burr's activities in the Ohio settlement. Visit Marietta's great two museums online here www.mariettamuseums.org. Also Craig Pyles, the Superintendent of Blennerhassett Island State Park takes us to the shady happenings on this historic island in the Ohio River. We analyze the conspiracy between Burr and his financier on the island, Harman Blennerhassett. The Burr Conspiracy comes unraveled in spectacular fashion and both Burr and Blennershassett are arrested. Take a boat and tour the island this summer, a great day trip. https://wvstateparks.com/park/blennerhassett-island-historical-state-park/ In the second part of the episode we travel to Nazi Germany to hear the story of Mildred Gillars, aka Axis Sally, the American voice of Nazi Germany. Author Richard Lucas describes the transformation of a struggling Ohio actress to the top Nazi propagandist on Nazi radio. Lucas' biography of Axis Sally broke new ground on one of the most hated women in American History. His book, Axis Sally: the American Voice of Nazi Germany is available here:https://www.amazon.com/Axis-Sally-American-Voice-Germany/dp/1935149431 We follow Mildred's rise from theatre student at Ohio Wesleyan University to one of the Third Reich's most prized radio propagandists. Richard leads us through her infamous treason trial in 1949, which is the subject of the new Al Pacino movie "American Traitor." Lucas and Alex also uncover just how much she knew about the atrocities of the Nazi regime and her quiet life in Columbus, Ohio decades after her treasonous activity. On Episode 124, I'm joined by Kyle Henderson, the lead vocalist and chief lyricist for Desert Noises. The Nashville by way of Provo, Utah trio released the excellent album Everything Always a little more than a month ago. The album, the band's first since 2014's 27 Ways, sees them working with Bill Reynolds (formally of Band of Horses) at the producing helm. Reynolds, who became a quick co-writing partner with Henderson, was paramount in helping the indie-rock and Americana band expand and really embrace a sonic soundscape that was both vibrantly rich, yet filled with space and a stark mood. They create a bold depth throughout that feels right at home amongst post-rock bands such as Explosions in the Sky--the album ender "Windows Down" would have most certainly been a scene-stealer in Friday Night Lights. The warm accents and steely drums of "Coffee" and Henderson's hauntingly eerie vocals lead the charge on "American Skin."During this interview, we talk about working with Bill Reynolds, recording Everything Always after the band's six-year hiatus, our favorite bands & albums of the mid-2000s (Radiohead, My Morning Jacket, etc), embracing open space to create monolithic soundscapes, navigating 2020, and growing up in Utah. In the spring of 1966 a 19-year old Bill Reynolds was on top of the world. The young Californian had it all: the killer car (a '65 Chevelle Super Sport to be exact), the gorgeous girlfriend, and a well-paying job in Los Angeles. Then, just before summer hit, his world changed forever - he received a draft notice in the mail, with orders to report to the Los Angeles Induction Station on May 17, 1966. Bill knew that it was his time to serve, like his father before him in WWII, so he went without question. He went to war with the Army's 9th Infantry Division, which had been re-activated for combat in Vietnam. Throughout his tour, Bill fought some extremely tough battles, lost some very good friends along the way, and served honorably. This episode was actually recorded one day after the 50th anniversary of one of the last battles Bill fought in, where he lost several of his good friends. Bill ultimately completed his tour of duty in Vietnam, and returned home to pick up where he left off back in 1966. We're honored to have him on the podcast, and thankful he's able to keep such an important part of our history alive. This is another incredible episode you don't want to miss!
