Kierston Deal tosses a no-no. The Spring Game approaches.
Giddy-up folks, we are talking about everyone's favorite topic: DEATH. I loved talking with Kierston about all things death, funeral practices from around the world, grief, and love. Kierston is a library customer services supervisor and loves to read, especially books that teach her something new. You can follow her beautifully curated Instagram: @oursharedshelves For our discussion Kierston chose From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death by Caitlin Doughty, a mortician who is fascinated by death. There are so many different funeral and burial practices around the world and this book explores many of them. For our drink we went witha beer: the Rogue Dead Guy Ale, which is delicious and a great choice to go along with the title. In this episode:Ask a Mortician - Caitlin Doughty's YouTube Human Remains Project in Cullowhee NC (Correction: In the pod I misremembered this program being at UNC Pembroke - It's at Western Carolina University. Listener taxidermy questions answered on when, how, or what to do for a beautiful game bird trophy mount. Headline news from the field with important hunting and fishing information and gift ideas that are unisex. Gifts for both men and women. This is Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with the radio show The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle! Episode 162 Details NEWS NEBRASKA BIG HORN SHEEP Exciting times in Nebraska this hunting season. Kiersten Black at only 15 years old became the first female Nebraska resident in modern history to harvest a bighorn sheep in the state, according to Oudoorlife.com. While hunting with her dad, Kierston took down a giant, old ram with a busted-up jaw and broomed horns. Quite the accomplishment for the high school sophomore, who drew a lottery permit costing only $29 to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Kiersten has been hunting for the last five years with her father, having tagged several beautiful whitetail and muley bucks over the years. This memory will go down in the books as Kiersten Black was the only name drawn from a total of nearly 3,600 applicants as Nebraska only draws one tag and the other tag is auctioned off yearly, this year's tag sold for $370,000. Kiersten tagged her trophy ram in the panhandle of Nebraska around the steep terrain of Chadron. HUNTER DIES AFTER BLIND CATCHES FIRE This news is the kind that one hates to report on, a 75-year-old hunter from Michigan lost his life when the blind he was deer hunting from started on fire believed to have been caused by a portable propane heater. When the victim was found by his grandson who was also hunting nearby, the man was already deceased and had suffered severe burns, according to Outdoorlife.com. It is unclear if the blind was a pop-up, hard-sided, or homemade structure. Again a hard story to report, but also one that we should all take notice of as temperatures are cooling. Whether hunting from a blind or ice fishing from an ice house; this time of year does entail the use of heat sources such as a portable propane type. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding outdoorsmen and women to: Keep a battery-powered carbon monoxide detector inside any closed spaces where fuel is burning, even if there is a ventilation system. Keep exhaust from gas-powered generators and vehicles away from open windows of cabins, RVs, and other dwellings. Crack a window in hunting blinds, ice fishing houses and other enclosed spaces to promote air circulation. Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning: dizziness, headaches, confusion, fatigue and trouble breathing. WISCONSIN BOWHUNTER KILLS COUGER IN SELF-DEFENSE Last month the first cougar in Wisconsin to be killed in 115 years was done so by a bowhunter. In Buffalo County, Wisconsin, Ben Karasch had just climbed into his tree stand and spotted an adult cougar stalking him, according to Outdoorlife.com. The lion continued to creep closer to his stand and when within 15 yards, Karasch realized he was in a dangerous situation. Cougars are protected in the state of Wisconsin, however, due to the circumstances after waving hands and yelling at the cougar which the lion stood sharing right back with its tail swishing back and forth unfazed, creeping closer. Karasch drew back, releasing an arrow after feeling that was the only option left, hitting the cougar in the shoulder. The cat ran off and immediately Karasch self-reported the incident to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Authorities came to the scene, and with Karasch were able to track the blood trail to find the lion 120 yards away. It was a two-year-old male, weighing 128 pounds and they believed to have come from the Dakotas. An investigation was done by the Wisconsin DNR and was deemed this was a self-defense scenario and there would be no charges as Karasch did the right thing in informing authorities immediately. The investigation showed that the mountain lion came within 13 yards of Karasch strapped in his treestand. UPLAND GAME BIRD TAXIDERMY The Do, The Do Not & Did You Know About Pheasants Guest: Rick Acker, Award Winning Taxidermist Owner of Roughrider Game Birds located in Lincoln, North Dakota Upland birds taken early in the season do not make great mounts due to the fragile pin feathers. Best to mount pheasants harvested in November and December. Do not ring the neck of a possible pheasant to mount as it will stretch the neck. Cool the pheasant immediately. Wrap the feet and beak in wet paper towels. Double bag the pheasant before placing in the freezer. This will keep the bird from drying out until received by a taxidermist. Do NOT place birds in panty hose. A panty hose causes a bird to quickly dry out during freezing making it difficult, to almost impossible, to mount by a taxidermist at a later date. IS TAXIDERMY A GOOD GIFT IDEA? Taxidermy work on any trophy animal, fish, or bird is a very thoughtful, sentimental process. It is turning that trophy into a work of art to cherish. Giving the gift of taxidermy work must be thoroughly thought through. BEC shares how if one does not know exactly what a person would like down with their trophy to mount, a gift certificate is a better route. Find out which taxidermist the recipient favors instead or pool money together to give a gift of money towards a future wall or pedestal mount. Taxidermy - What to consider: - How much will this wall mount or pedestal cost? - How long will it take to have the taxidermy work completed? - Is there room for the desired mount? Determine if there is enough wall space or high enough ceilings as an example. A pheasant with the wings spanned will take more room than a pheasant on a perch. Shoulder mounts on big game take up a lot of space both wall width and ceiling height. - Are there memorable tokens from the adventure that are wanted to be included in the mount? Such as the shotgun shell from the bird hunt or the rifle casing from the hunt. UNISEX GIFT IDEA: SURECAN USA SureCan USA produces an American-made gas can, fuel can, and water dispenser. Intuitive Medium Kiersten Hathcock and Retired NYPD Detective Mark Pucci discuss their decade-long partnership working on missing persons and homicide cases. About my guests: Kiersten Parsons Hathcock is a Shark Tank-winning, self-taught carpenter & furniture designer who defied the odds and built an internationally-known furniture company out of her garage. But what most don't know is that she's also an ordinary woman who was thrown into extraordinary circumstances at the age of 36 when she suddenly started seeing and hearing the spirits of dead children, some of whom were killed by predators. Her intuitive awakening led to partnerships with detectives around the country and a publishing deal for her memoir called Little Voices, which was released in September 2022. But it doesn't end there. Little did Kiersten know at the time, the kids weren't just coming to her for help...they were coming to save her life. Kiersten is an incredibly vulnerable, well-spoken, down-to-earth, credible mom-of-two (and childhood sexual abuse survivor) who inspires people of all ages to trust their intuition as a roadmap for life and healing. Detectives and families around the country are ardent supporters of her decade-long work as a volunteer medium. Her story is unique in many ways (see below). Topics include but are not limited to: Developing Intuition, Life as a Psychic Detective, Healing from Narcissistic/Sociopathic Abuse, Using Intuition in Business, Surviving and Escaping from Domestic Violence, Healing from Childhood Sexual Abuse, What I've Learned as the Parent of a Transgender Adult. Retired NYPD Detective Mark Pucci is the founder of the National Institute for Law & Justice. According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons (NamUS) database, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, more than 600,000 persons of all ages go missing every year, and approximately 4,400 unidentified bodies are recovered every year. It's no wonder law enforcement partners are struggling to devote the time they want and need to solving missing persons cases (and homicide cases). Families are forced to look for additional investigative help, and this can be costly. This is the very reason Mark Pucci founded NILJ. Our goal is to ensure that each family does not have to pay out-of-pocket for much-needed investigative services. Generous personal and corporate donations as well as grant monies provide funds our services for families desperately searching for answers and hope. #truecrime #trauma #mentalhealth #criminaljustice #lawandcrime #courttv Collier's Links: ➡️ Wanna say thanks for a great episode? https://www.buymeacoffee.com/collierlandry ➡️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/collierlandry ➡️ Check out my Merch Store: https://www.collierlandry.com/store ➡️ Amazon Affiliate Link: https://www.collierlandry.com/amazon ➡️ YouTube- https://www.youtube.com/collierlandry Collier's Live Schedule, updated on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook: Instagram: Tuesday 2 pm ET / 11 am PT YouTube: Wednesdays & Thursdays @ 6pm ET / 3pm PT ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/collierlandry/ ▶ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@collierlandry ▶ Twitter: https://twitter.com/collierlandry ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/collierlandry ▶ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/collierlandry/ Learn more about your ad choices. Stoners, welcome to the ultimate Nashville group hang featuring Liv, Matt Boy Magic, and Keys (and Tish’s awesome basement patio!) And the group wastes no time getting into it, beginning their quest to find Matt a woman, and learn from the male species, they decode the meaning of key phrases like “a girl who can hang” and “someone who’s just chill.” Plus, Tish learns about some of the biggest generational differences in dating, love, and marriage (her conclusion: sounds hard). Then, in this week’s Dear MT, the group gets deep into astrological signs, finding that they are generally spot on for the Cyrus fam, and discuss the impact of style icons like Fran Drescher and Tish’s personal hero, Pamela Anderson. We had a blast with this one Stoners and hope you do too! See you next week!

Kierston and Greg are putting the "fun" in Funeral today... sort of. Join them as they fill their bellies and their brains with the food facts of grief, feasting and the psychology is behind why we eat when people die.
Brandi starts off the podcast with a VERY exciting announcement which we won’t reveal so that you can hear it straight from her, but it does involve shaving her whole body with her Billie razor and not leaving the bedroom for 48 hours. Wells is still sweating profusely after spending some time in Palm Springs, the land where old people stick to their seats and shopping “buggies” are out to get you. While the hosts don’t have too much new content they’ve consumed lately, Wells does have a new (but also old) favorite activity, badminton, and a new favorite method of crossing the street which makes him feel like he’s part of Cobra Kai. Shockingly, Brandi came to the pod prepared with last week’s homework, including some tragic songs for her funeral which may lead to more funerals, and some insane lines that have come Kierston’s way via Hinge. If counting calories and meal prep is the last thing you want to think about, we have a guest for you. Today we bring on guest, Kierston Mills, CEO of Fearfully Made Fit, and dietetics student soon to be a registered dietician. 90% of what you do is probably your nutrition and sleep patterns. We are excited to bring on Kierston with some perspectives we haven’t shared yet. We are going to talk about intuitive eating. Counting macros is not for everybody. If the thought of a food scale makes you want to cry, or you are spending 3 hours in the kitchen meal prepping every day, maybe we need to look at some other options that can fit into your busy lifestyle. Meredith: How did you get interested in the concept of intuitive eating instead of counting and measuring every single food? Kierston: My fitness journey ebbed and flowed with nutrition. When I first started out, I was eating the typical high school diet of hot pockets, Frappuccinos, and Doritos to starting to eat more fruits and vegetables and lean proteins. Throughout my journey I was introduced to fitting macros and flexible dieting. It was a helpful tool for me because it allowed me to see what a portion size looked like, and what portions look like on a plate. It also helped me to realize that I can include any type of food into my diet, even a glass of wine or cookie. Over the last year or so, I adopted intuitive eating. This is eating anything in amounts to satisfy your hunger. There are no food rules around it. One of the reasons I transferred to intuitive eating was that even though flexible dieting was a helpful tool to prepare for competitions and lose body fat, it just wasn’t something I saw myself doing for the rest of my life. The whole point of developing a healthy lifestyle is developing habits you can stick with forever. With my nutrition background and previous experience counting macros, I had a good idea of what foods make me feel good and give me energy to perform in the gym. It allowed me a good relationship with food and understanding of high nutrient dense foods. That’s how I got into intuitive eating. Meredith: What is the difference between flexible dieting and intuitive eating? Kierston: With flexible dieting you would count your macronutrient needs. A macronutrient is protein, carbohydrates, or fat. With flexible dieting, you keep track of those macronutrients with an App like My FitnessPal or maybe pen and paper. The benefit of flexible dieting is to help you know how much you are eating by weighing and documenting, then adjusting for your calorie deficit or surplus. Meredith: Got it; so flexible dieting is more about weighing and tracking, versus intuitive eating moves away from counting while still managing for health and wellness. Kierston: Yeah. Intuitive eating is about moving away from the rules and judgement, eating until you are comfortably satisfied, and only when you are hungry. Meredith: I feel like sometimes people count calories and get frustrated with that method, but have a fear of transitioning into intuitive eating. They have a fear about eating too much of the “wrong stuff.” They have judgement about right and wrong stuff. I think it is maybe programmed from having to record and tie in so closely to an App. What advice would you have for somebody who feels like they don’t know if they can make this transition even though they want to? Kierston: A first good step would be getting in contact with a dietician that is trained in intuitive eating and has that kind of philosophy. If you want to do it on your own, start by using your hand. Your hand is a great tool to measure portion sizes without having to put your food on a scale. For instance, your palm would be the size of 3 oz of protein. A fist would be a good estimate of fruit or vegetables. If you cup your hand, that is a good estimate for a starchy vegetable like potatoes. You can use your thumb as a good indicator of a fat portion size like cheese, nuts, or olive oil. Meredith: Thank you for sharing how we can use this eyeball method to gauge where we are at overall. What are some other tips you have for people that want to give intuitive eating a try at home? Kierston: Consider avoiding snacking. We often hear “six small meals a day,” but that might not be effective for someone’s work schedule. They might not have time to eat every few hours. Especially if they are a busy person, like you, who always has patients to tend to without time to sit down and eat. You can try three balanced meals a day with balanced food groups. Go to ChooseMyPlate.gov. That is a great representation of how to build a healthy plate. That website talks about making half your plate fruits and vegetables, a quarter of it lean protein, and a quarter of it a carbohydrate source. You also want to make half of your grains whole; they have more health benefit like higher fiber. If you aren’t lactose intolerant, MyPlate also encourages a serving of dairy to increase Calcium and Vitamin D intake. Meredith: It sounds like MyPlate is a great resource to get started; I’ve looked at it and noticed too that people can hone in by other factors like age, size, and gender too, which is really helpful. Kierston: Yeah; it’s a great resource. Based on gender and age group, you can find variation in recommendation so you get all of the micronutrient needs too. Meredith: Thank you. Do you have any other tips for those who want to start with intuitive eating at home. Kierston: Absolutely. With intuitive eating, you want to not have any judgement around food. I recommend reading the book, Intuitive Eating by Evelyn Tribole. I think that is a great resource for anyone who wants to transition out of counting macros or being free of a certain meal plan into trusting their own body. Meredith: I’m really appreciative of your sharing these tips. I think so many times we feel judgement around food, and we want to have a healthy relationship with food, but we’re not sure how. I feel like intuitive eating offers the audience some strategies to being with right now. Kierston: Yes, absolutely. I always encourage those with difficulty having a healthy relationship with food to work with a counselor or dietician to work through that too. A good support system for a healthy lifestyle and avoiding fear around certain types of food is helpful too. Meredith: Thank you so much; we really appreciate your sharing on how the audience can have those healthy relationships with food.
