Introduction: Minutes 0 to 7:15 We recorded on Friday this week instead of Thursday as usual. We both loved the Olympics and talk about our favorite events and athletes. Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni: Minutes 7:15 to 18:45 Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni are costarring in the film This Ends with Us. The book is by Colleen Hoover and it's been criticized as romanticizing domestic abuse. I've read that the movie does the same thing. Justin Baldoni is directing the film, he bought the rights and hired a screenwriter. People noticed that he skipped the London premiere and that he hasn't posed with Blake Lively or done press with her. They also noticed that Blake and the author Colleen Hoove unfollowed Justin on Instagram. The Hollywood Reporter said that Lively and Baldoni's feud started in post-production, when Blake commissioned a separate edit of the film. Chandra thinks that Justin's edit is likely the one that made it to theaters. Blake's husband Ryan Reynolds also rewrote a key scene. THR next reported that Blake screened her own edit of the film at a book event for Colleen Hoover in June. It looks like she tried to take creative control of the film. At first we got vague stories that Baldoni created a difficult work environment. The stories about why people hate him were suspicious to me. He also is said to have made Blake feel bad about her postpartum body. Baldoni has hired the same PR crisis management firm that Johnny D-pp and Brad Pitt use. TMZ then reported that Blake felt uncomfortable around Justin because he kissed her too long in a scene and because he asked her trainer how much she weighed since he had to pick her up and has a bad back. An older interview from 2016 recently came out where Blake and Parker Posey were meangirling a Norwegian interviewer, ignoring her and talking to each other instead. This is how Blake has always been. Blake has been promoting the movie like it's a frothy romance and Justin is being serious and measured in his promotion. His production company has partnered with an anti domestic violence foundation and he has been talking about ending the cycle of abuse. Royals: Minutes 18:45 to 25:15 None of the major royals went to the Olympics in Paris. Will and Kate just recorded a brief video congratulations with celebrities afterwards. They didn't congratulate any of the individual athletes. The Daily Mail recently reported that Kate is still undergoing preventative chemotherapy, that she's still recovering and that we probably won't see her until Remembrance Day. This is the type of story we get about Kate every six months. Earlier this month the Sussexes gave an interview to CBS Sunday Morning on behalf of their new initiative through Archewell called The Parents Network, to provide support and resources for parents to protect their children from online harm. They included parents who had lost children to online bullying and to drugs purchased online. It's a great cause. Meghan was asked about her past suicidal ideation, which she opened up about during her interview with Oprah. I play a segment from their CBS Sunday Morning interview. Harry and Meghan have been working on this cause for some time. A couple of weeks ago it was reported that the Sussexes have accepted an invitation to visit Colombia. We didn't realize it would happen so soon. Harry and Meghan are in Colombia now and the photos and videos coming out are incredible. They're so warm and natural with people. They have been meeting with the Vice President Francia Marquez, they went to a theater performance and participated in a panel about Internet safety. Marquez saw their Netflix series and that's why she wanted to meet Meghan! Politics: Minutes 25:15 to 33:30 While we were off, Kamala Harris chose Minnesota governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Chandra thinks that Harris has a soft spot for dorky white men. We loved Harris and Walz's joint video interview. We hope she does more cooking videos. We want Harris to go on Hot Ones. Trump has been having a meltdown over Harris. He called her beautiful in that lispy interview with Elon Musk and may be conflicted about her for that reason. He hates being called weird. Introduction: Minutes 0 to 4:45 We will be off next week due to Memorial Day. I finished watching From on MGM+ and also watched Blown Away on Netflix. Chandra remembers the show Flea Market Flip with Ali Wentworth on HGTV. The documentary she remembers is called Craft in America and was on PBS. Royals: Minutes 4:45 to 25:30 Last week, as we were recording, the news had just come out that the Sussexes were going to be in Nigeria the next day. There were so many stories, pictures and videos of their visit, but it was mostly limited to Getty and social media. Their visit was announced late, and we think that was to keep British journalists from traveling to Nigeria to cover their tour. It was hard to source stories and photos, but we loved that they weren't being held up by protocol. They gave a lot of personal time to the causes and people they visited. Meghan was declared a princess of Nigeria by four kings. That was such a moving gesture and you could tell Meghan was touched. Nigeria pulled out all the stops for the Sussexes. People love the Sussexes because they are so genuine. During their tour they were getting invitations from other countries to visit. I play a segment of Meghan's speech at the Women in Leadership panel in Nigeria. There was a lot of racism and toxicity in the British press around that visit. Nigerian Twitter united to call it out. It seemed like Buckingham Palace gave the press the go ahead to attack the Sussexes. We've also heard that Charles is trying to block Harry and Meghan from visiting more commonwealth countries, similar to how Charles tried to block the Bidens from being hospitable toward them. We mentioned in our last episode that Charles had scheduled a handover event to give William the title of colonel in chief of the Army Air Corps, which was Prince Harry's regiment when he served two tours in Afghanistan. That little event happened, William cosplayed as Harry, dressed like him and took a ride in an Apache helicopter. The optics were terrible, because William wants to be Harry and falls short in every way. The Sussexes are covering this week's People and it's such a contrast to last week's weird cover story that centered how William was coping with his wife's illness. There are direct quotes from Harry and Meghan saying how well they're doing and that they're going to plan more visits. I play a clip from Zoom with Karen, Zakia and Ameerah, where we talked about the Nigerian tour. Like Karen mentioned on Zoom, the Sussexes got a lot of gifts. Of course there are calls for them to give them back. The British press is trying to make it sound like they got extravagant gifts. Chandra remembers when Camilla was gifted diamonds by the Saudis. Archewell was briefly “delinquent” with their registration in the state of California, but that was a simple mixup by the Attorney General's office which lost a check. The check was sent by certified mail and was delivered. Governor Newsom spoke out on their behalf. This week we also saw more of William's alleged one time mistress, Rose Hanbury. She was at the Badminton Horse Trials where she was photographed with Camilla. Rose and her husband, David Rocksavage, were also at an OBE service where their son was the page for Charles and Camilla. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's non-profit organization, Archewell, is back in good standing after a brief period of being declared "delinquent" in the US. The charity had to halt all fundraising and spending due to this designation, which was a result of failing to submit its annual report and registration fees on time. However, sources close to the couple insist that all necessary filings were submitted punctually.The Department of Justice's website now lists the charity's status as "current," indicating that the issues have been resolved.In a statement to The LA Times, the California attorney general's press office confirmed: "After being in touch with our Registry of Charities and Fundraisers, the organization is current and in good standing."Earlier, a letter from California's Attorney General Rob Bonta noted that Archewell had let its registration fees lapse since the beginning of May, rendering the charity "not in good standing" and prohibiting it from soliciting or distributing charitable funds. The letter warned of possible penalties and the suspension or revocation of the charity's registration.Despite this, a source told the Mirror that the fees were not actually late, claiming: "For whatever reason, it has not been cashed. As soon as the foundation learnt of the problem, they immediately issued another cheque. Harry and Meghan's team hope this will quickly resolve the issue within the next week."A representative for Archewell later assured The Mirror: "We have diligently investigated the situation and can confirm that The Archewell Foundation remains fully compliant and in good standing. Due payments were made promptly and in accordance with the IRS's processes and procedures. Furthermore, all necessary paperwork had been filed by the Foundation without error or wrongdoing."PR Expert Ryan McCormick suggested to the Mirror that the damage is already done.

The scathing letter stated that Archewell has allowed its registration fees to lapse since the beginning of May, resulting in the charity being prohibited from engaging in activities that require registration, such as soliciting or disbursing charitable funds.Archewell is now required to submit records to explain the late payment and pay late fees. The foundation has reportedly filed for an extension. The "delinquent" label was given due to Archewell's failure to submit its annual report and registration fees. If the delinquency is not remedied, the charity's status could be further changed to suspended and/or revoked.However, a source close to Meghan and Harry has insisted that all the necessary documents were filed on time, including a physical cheque. The insider told the Mirror, "For whatever reason, it has not been cashed. As soon as the foundation learnt of the problem, they immediately issued another cheque. Harry and Meghan's team hope this will quickly resolve the issue within the next week."The Daily Mail reminds us Archewell says its mission is to 'show up, do good', adding: 'We meet the moment by showing up, taking action and using our unparalleled spotlight to uplift and unite communities - local and global - through acts of service and compassion.'The foundation is separate from the couple's Archewell media and business divisions which have been involved in the Netflix and the $25 million Spotify deal.

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 6:00 This is our last podcast of 2023 and we plan to be back January 13. I watched The Happiest Season on Hulu and loved it. Chandra watched May December and enjoyed it but says it's a downer. I'm excited for Reacher season two. Chandra will start the final episodes of The Crown. She tried watching Red, White & Royal Blue but it made her feel old. I watched the documentaries The Mission on Disney and Bad Surgeon on Netflix. Royals: Minutes (6:00) to 23:15 Last week on Friday Kate had her third annual Together at Christmas concert. This was one of her successes that Omid Scobie mentioned in Endgame. Camilla and Charles didn't go. Sophie, Beatrice, Zara, Eugenie and Kate's family including her sister and her mom and dad came. The Middletons have been keeping a low profile since their business went bankrupt, owing creditors millions. Kate wore an all white suit that was straight out of Meghan's lookbook. In last week's episode #165 we talked about the fact that the royal racists, Kate and Charles, were accidentally released in the Dutch translation of Omid Scobie's Endgame. Scobie wrote an essay for iNews in which he explained how that happened. We also mentioned last week that the royals had crisis talks and were planning a “charm offensive” in response to Endgame. There were some vague legal threats in the press but they plan to just act like everything is fine like they always do. King Charles visited the court that will preside over Prince Harry's case against the Mirror just a day before their ruling! Chandra doesn't think Prince Harry will win his royal protection case but that he's pursuing it so that it's all on the record. Part of the “charm offensive” involves the royals doing more charity work, although Kate hasn't been seen much. There was an article that Kate would get revenge on the Sussexes by getting good press. Camilla Tominey had a series of articles about how Meghan hates Kate and it was clearly projection. Kate took all three of her children to visit a Baby Bank and they actually brought donations with them. It was one of the best things they've done in months, however they were criticized by anti-poverty advocates for normalizing charity instead of advocating for systemic change. William visited a charity for unhoused people he works with called Passages. He was seen hugging people and the Daily Mail reported on that and called him the “Prince of Hugs.” After Omid Scobie reported in Endgame that Prince Edward is a germaphobe the palace released a video where he's uncomfortably shaking people's hands. The Sussexes released a cute video of their charity work with Archewell this year along with the foundation's impact report. The press poured over the numbers and criticized them for only raising $2 million this year, which is ridiculous. They raised more in their first two years after starting their foundation, and they haven't “spent” all of that money. They also gave their staffers raises. Here's a link to one of the tweets Chandra mentions about royal staffers being jealous. Richard Eden wrote a column calling for Harry and Meghan's titles to be stripped and for Harry and his kids to be removed from the line of succession. This argument invalidates the whole “magic blood club” reasoning for the royalty if Harry can just be excluded. The Sun reported that a source said that Charles “will not be emotionally blackmailed by his own son” in regard to the royal racist reveal in the Dutch version of Endgame. Harry had nothing to do with Endgame and these people know how they treated him. Kate and William released a black and white family Christmas photo. They were all wearing black jeans and white button down shirts and it was giving Olan Mills 1994. We wonder why they didn't make it more Christmassy. Us Weekly reported that they were embarrassed by that. With the inflation rate easing and the economy holding in, policymakers on the Federal Open Market Committee voted unanimously to keep the benchmark overnight borrowing rate in a targeted range between 5.25%-5.5%. Along with the decision to stay on hold, committee members penciled in at least three rate cuts in 2024, assuming quarter percentage point increments. That’s less than market pricing of four, but more aggressive than what officials had previously indicated. Markets had widely anticipated the decision to stay put, which could end a cycle that has seen 11 hikes, pushing the fed funds rate to its highest level in more than 22 years. There was uncertainty, though, about how ambitious the FOMC might be regarding policy easing. Following the release of the decision, the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped more than 400 points, surpassing 37,000 for the first time. The committee’s “dot plot” of individual members’ expectations indicates another four cuts in 2025, or a full percentage point. Three more reductions in 2026 would take the fed funds rate down to between 2%-2.25%, close to the long-run outlook, though there was considerable dispersion in the estimates for the final two years. Markets, though, followed up the meeting and Chair Jerome Powell’s press conference by pricing in an even more aggressive rate-cut path, anticipating 1.5 percentage points in reductions next year, double the FOMC’s indicated pace. In a possible nod that hikes are over, the statement said that the committee would take multiple factors into account for “any” more policy tightening, a word that had not appeared previously. Along with the interest rate hikes, the Fed has been allowing up to $95 billion a month in proceeds from maturing bonds to roll off its balance sheet. That process has continued, and there has been no indication the Fed is willing to curtail that portion of policy tightening. That echoed new language in the post-meeting statement. The committee added the qualifier that inflation has “eased over the past year” while maintaining its description of prices as “elevated.” Fed officials see core inflation falling to 3.2% in 2023 and 2.4% in 2024, then to 2.2% in 2025. Finally, it gets back to the 2% target in 2026. Economic data released this week showed both consumer and wholesale prices were little changed in November. By some measures, though, the Fed is nearing its 2% inflation target. Bank of America’s calculations indicate that the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge will be around 3.1% year over year in November, and actually could hit a 2% six-month annualized rate, meeting the central bank’s goal. The statement also noted that the economy “has slowed,” after saying in November that activity had “expanded at a strong pace.” In the news conference, Powell said: “Recent indicators suggest that growth in economic activity has slowed substantially from the outsized pace seen in the third quarter. Even so, GDP is on track to expand around 2.5% for the year as a whole.” Committee members upgraded gross domestic product to grow at a 2.6% annualized pace in 2023, a half percentage point increase from the last update in September. Officials see GDP at 1.4% in 2024, roughly unchanged from the previous outlook. Projections for the unemployment rate were largely unchanged, at 3.8% in 2023 and rising to 4.1% in subsequent years. Officials have stressed their willingness to hike rates again if inflation flares up. However, most have said they can be patient now as they watch the impact the previous policy tightening moves are having on the U.S. economy. Stubbornly high prices have exacted a political toll on President Joe Biden, whose approval rating has suffered in large part because of negative sentiment on how he has handled the economy. There had been some speculation that the Fed could be reluctant to make any dramatic policy actions during a presidential election year, which looms large in 2024. Leftist governments in Denmark and Australia are adopting a more hardline stance on immigration than many notionally conservative governments. Australia’s governing Labor Party has pledged to cut net immigration in half. Denmark’s Social Democrats have pledged zero net immigration, a.k.a. balanced immigration. Australia, with a population of only around 25 million, suffered net immigration of around 510,000 in the year to June. The government has conceded the system is “broken” and “in tatters” – blaming the previous center-right government. They say they will reduce it to around 250,000 by June 2025. There is growing acknowledgment that an ongoing housing crisis cannot be resolved if mass migration continues at current levels. Denmark, a generous welfare state, is going even further. They aim to balance the number of people entering the country against the number of people leaving, with the government insisting: “If you want to be a party of the working class and middle class, you have to ensure that migration has a manageable level.” Social Democrat lawmaker Rasmus Stoklund explained his party’s increasingly anti-immigration stance is the true left-wing position. “The part of society that bears the brunt of unchecked migration is the working-class population that we should be representing,” he said. “It is their children who have to go to schools that experience cultural clashes. It is those people who have to experience the criminality and social problems that follow. The more privileged people in society will only meet migrants if they are the children of diplomats, so for them the issue is not so clear.” Denmark is also taking radical action to integrate the existing migration background population. Suicide accounted for just under 40 percent of United States active military deaths as of December 2022, according to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, which found that U.S. military suicide rates have dramatically increased over the past several decades. Indeed, the current leading cause of death among servicemen is currently categorized as “self-inflicted,” with a total of 333 incidents last year. Suicide was recorded as almost ten percent higher in prevalence than accidents, of which there were 265. Yet, last year represents a slight decrease in the rate of self-inflicted deaths compared to October 2020, in which suicide rates were just under 41 percent. Suicide accounted for roughly ten percent of military deaths when records began in 1980, with that figure remaining mostly stable until the 1990s, in which the rate jumped to 23 percent in 1995. The rate of self-inflicted deaths fell sharply in the mid-2000s, however, much of the decline can be attributed to the increase in “hostile action” fatalities in 2008. Suicide rates across American society have reached unprecedented levels under the Biden government, with just under 50,000 people killing themselves in 2022. In a tax filing disclosed Tuesday, the non-profit organization received just over $2 million in charitable contributions in 2022, compared to $13 million in 2021. However, some $8.2 million funds remain in the Archewell Foundation accounts. The 28-page report also details the charitable work the foundation has undertaken during 2023. The figure represents a 280 percent increase from his salary of less than $60,000 in 2021. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also faced more bad news earlier this week after they named Showbusiness’ biggest losers of 2023. Earlier this week, NBC reported a judge ordered Prince Harry on Monday to pay nearly 50,000 pounds (more than $60,000) in legal fees to the publisher of the Daily Mail tabloid for his failed court challenge in a libel lawsuit. The Duke of Sussex is suing Associated Newspapers Ltd. over an article that said Harry tried to hide his efforts to retain publicly funded protection in the U.K. after leaving his role as a working member of the royal family.
