Japanese jazz pianist Miki Yamanaka, born and raised in Kyoto and Kobe Japan, now resides in New York City with her drummer husband Jimmy Macbride. Her upcoming album, Shades of Rainbow is set to drop on September 8. Excitement explodes in Miki during this hour-long interview with this jubilant pianist who is a mainstay at New York's prime jazz clubs for emerging talent, Smalls and Mezzrow, both found in the West Village in Greenwich Village in the lower west side of Manhattan. Miki's been a New York resident since 2012. She did her graduate work at Queens College in Jazz Performance 2014-2015. Her street education occurred in New York City jazz clubs and concert halls before the COVID pandemic, performing with the likes of Antonio Hart, Peter Bernstein, Nicole Glover, Joe Farnsworth, Tivon Pennicott, Roxy Coss, Mark Turner and Fred Hersch. But all of that came to a grounding halt in March 2020 as COVID wiped the streets clean, leaving all jazz musicians jobless and at home with nobody to play with. This required inventiveness. Taking the cue from friend and fellow jazz pianist Emmet Cohen, Miki began to assemble ensembles in hers and Jimmy's Harlem apartment and stream her show “Miki's Mood” on the internet. Perhaps not as successful as “Live at Emmet's Place” it became a place where Miki, Jimmy and friends could play and jam once more and make a little money.  In 2015 she was one of three pianists selected to participate in “Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead”, an intensive composition residency at the Kennedy Center. She earned her Master of Music degree from Queens College, receiving the Sir Roland Hanna Award. Recently, Miki was one of ten new talent identified by The Academy (Grammy) as top emerging jazz talent.  Shades of Rainbow is Miki's fourth release, her second for Vancouver-based record company, Cellar Music. Her debut release, Miki, was also from Cellar Music. Her previous two recordings, Human Dust Suite and Stairway to the Stars can be found on the Outside in Music label. In this wrestling only episode, we start off with a bit off news about Mac Donald stealing the show at FMWE “The Dawn”.  Just when you think he cannot outdo himself, Mac leaves you shaking your head, in a good way.  From there we get into this week's match and a look at something that is stereotypically offensive especially for those who are sensitive but, if you can take the joke, all of this humor is done in good fun. Jim takes the lead on the play by play this week as we talk about how great the action is in this week's match. Although the Kung Fu Masters are great, they are clearly outclassed by Shun The Skywalker and Diamante, both of whom deserve to be on a major roster somewhere.  In terms of a finish, Tariq calls this finish a booking mistake. This match is available on Youtube under the Gaora Sports YouTube Channel and we recommend that you get over there and watch is as soon as possible.    --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sixmantagpodcast/support

In this complex, yet surprisingly potent conversation with Brandon and Kim Grilc of The Kazan Room in Kobe Japan, some of the topics we discuss include: How this husband and wife duo cultivated their passion for Tiki at one of America's most celebrated tropical drinks bars, inspiring them to open their own tropical drinks concept in Japan, where they now live. What it means to be a “Tiki Snob” or purist, and why Tiki culture is constantly evolving like a living organism. The ins and outs of Tiki menu design, including cocktail origins and attributions, glassware and garnish art, and the ever-important indicator scale of drink potency. Some of the cultural and logistical differences and opportunities that distinguish opening a bar in Japan vs. here in the United States. And how to plan your next trip to the Japanese “Kansai” region and the city of Kobe, where the Kazan Room resides alongside pampered cows, roaring surf, and picturesque mountains. Along the way, we cover why it's hard to quantify a “vibe,” tips for designing the perfect magical Aloha shirt, why three rums are sometimes better than one, and much, much more. In 1997, The town of Kobe Japan had a killer targeting children on the loose. The only true leads investigators had to go on was notes written in red ink that had been left at the crime scene and mailed to the press. these letters reminded multiple investigators of the infamous Zodiac Killer in America. Did Kobe have a Zodiac of their own? When an arrest was finally made, it shocked the country of Japan as a whole and it shocked us, too.Blanco, J. I. (n.d.). Thermal power generation is all about converting heat into rotational motion, and for grid scale generation that means steam turbines. Scaling factors matter in turbine efficiency, and General Electric has delivered a new record in single blade low pressure turbine technology with a 75-inch blade. It will be used in very large steam turbines to be installed in the British Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant. Liquid hydrogen is notoriously difficult to store and transport, both due to the extremely cold temperatures required, and the propensity of the tiny hydrogen molecule to diffuse through most barrier materials. Kawasaki Heavy Industries has commissioned the world's first bulk LH2 carrier, which will be used in a new green supply chain initiative to deliver coal derived hydrogen from Australia to Kobe Japan. Could this be the start of a new renaissance for coal, with a green twist? Battery electric aircraft are hobbled by very poor range performance with current battery technology. Could hybrid power plants bridge the gap between turboprops and pure electrics? Honeywell has developed a lightweight turbogenerator system that may give small regional airliners and vertical takeoff air taxis the range and reserve requirements needed to make electric flight a practical proposition. He is also the founder of One Corner Architects, a full service Architetural design studio in Ybor City, Tampa Florida. One Corner Architects specialize in creative contemporary design solutions for residential, commercial, and institutional projects.   Stan is very experienced in international architecture, having worked in the offices of Balkrishna Doshi in Ahmedabad, India, Team Zoo in Kobe Japan and he also apprenticed with a Japanese master carpenter in Hyogo, Japan. Russell has presented and published papers in international, national, and regional conferences and journals.  His work has been featured in the Japanese periodicals Jutaku Tokushu, Kenchiku Bunka, The Japan Architect, Kazi, Shonan Style and Kenchiku Chisiki. His work in the US has been featured on the Architectural Record and Archdaily websites and has received numerous design awards.    I first met Stan about 10 years ago while I was attending Miami University in Ohio for my Master's degree in Architecture.  When I found out he was offering a class on Japanese architecture, I signed up right away.  He also became an advisor on my graduate thesis project, which focused on Okinawan Architecture.  Stan organized and taught a Japan Summer Studio ,  Where he took about 15 students to study architecture in Japan for 6 weeks.  This was an incredible experience for me and my classmates, and was the first time I had been outside of the US. This experience a big influence on my life and helped convince me to take a shot at living there. A few years later, Stan began running the same program for the University of South Florida, and since I was already in the country, he  was nice enough to let me tag along for a few days with the group again. Michikazu Matsune is a performance-artist and choreographer who works in various contexts and spaces such as stage, museums, public and private spaces. His interest lies in testing poetic absurdity to reflect our society critically and playfully. His interdisciplinary performances investigate themes such as the relationship between body and objects, action and language, place and behavior. Michikazu Matsune is originally from Kobe/Japan and based in Vienna/Austria. André Eiermann is associate professor for theatre at the University of Agder, where he leads the interdisciplinary master’s programme in fine arts. He works as performance-artist and dramaturg in different contexts, often in interdisciplinary and site-specific projects, is educated at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen (Germany), and has coined the term postspectacular theatre with his homonymous phd-thesis (Postspektakuläres Theater, 2009). He is researching in the intersection between theory and practice, recently with particular focus on performing art in controversial areas and contemporary art's relation to situationism. The event is part of the discourse program "Radical Failure" of the theatre festival Meteor 2019 in Bergen

Dr. Akira Miyauchi Professor Akira Miyauchi (Figure 1) is President and COO of Kuma Hospital, Center of Excellence in Thyroid Care, Kobe, Japan. He is a Japanese endocrine surgeon, and a pioneer in active surveillance, and visionary in regard to treatment of thyroid cancer.  World renowned researcher, and lecturer. As the associate professor of the Department of Surgery, Kagawa Medical University, he proposed and initiated a clinical trial of active surveillance for low-risk papillary micro cancer in collaboration with Kuma Hospital in 1993. In 2001, he was appointed the President of Kuma Hospital. Since then, he has been keen on the study of evaluating treatments for papillary micro cancer, observation versus surgery. During this episode, the following topics are discussed: Financial burden of surgery versus total cost of active surveillance over ten years. Stretching Exercises for Neck Setting patient expectations prior to FNA to manage anxiety When the laryngeal nerve is severed during thyroid surgery, it can and should be repaired, with proper surgeon skill and training. Rather than being stationery and immobile, patients should practice neck stretching exercise within 24 hours proceeding surgery.  There should be no fear about separating the incision. Total cost of surgery is 4.1x the cost compared to the cost of active surveillance.  In the U.S., the cost is higher. Incidence versus mortality Worldwide trends related to thyroid cancer Papillary Microcarcinoma of the Thyroid (PMCT) Unfavorable events following immediate surgery Results of research which began in 1993 The current trend in the incidence of thyroid cancer is expected to create an added cost of $3.5 billion by 2030, to the individual and as a society. By providing patient an active surveillance brochure prior to FNA, they are more open to not proceeding with surgery for small thyroid cancer management. Patient voice restores to near normal when repair of laryngeal nerve is done correctly.  All surgeons should be executing this to perfection. When doing next stretches one-day post surgery, patients report feeling much better and less pain, even one year after surgery. Protocol for delaying surgery depends on the patient’s age.  Older patients are less likely to require surgery.  75% of patients will not require surgery for their lifetime.   Listen to Doctor Thyroid here!  Akira Miyauchi, MD 35: Rethinking Thyroid Cancer ? When Saying No to Surgery Maybe Best for You with Dr. Allen Ho from Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles 21: Diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and You Say No to Surgery with Dr. Louise Davies 50: Regarding Thyroid Cancer, Are You a Minimalist or a Maximalist? with Dr. Michael Tuttle from Sloan Kettering PAPERS and RESEARCH  Estimation of the lifetime probability of disease progression of papillary microcarcinoma of the thyroid during active surveillance Comparison of the costs of active surveillance and immediate surgery in the management of low-risk papillary microcarcinoma of the thyroid. Incidences of Unfavorable Events in the Management of Low-Risk Papillary Microcarcinoma of the Thyroid by Active Surveillance Versus Immediate Surgery TSH-suppressive doses of levothyroxine are required to achieve preoperative native serum triiodothyronine levels in patients who have undergone total thyroidectomy.
