Welcome to another episode of the TALK MUSIC Podcast! This week's guest is THE SPOONS. I loved this fun chat with both SANDY and GORD, including their most recent release ECHOES featuring Alan Frew, Gowan, Strange Advance, Kon Kan, Jean Marc Pisapia (the Box) and others doing their own interpretations of some of the SPOONS most popular songs. I also go deep on their entire, illustrious career, including working with producers Daniel Lanois, Nile Rogers (who produced the Talkback album and songs Romantic Traffic, Old Emotions, Tell no Lies) and John Punter (who produced their Big breakthrough album Arias and Symphonies, including the song Nova Heart). We also chat about the album I produced called Bridges over Borders. Enjoy!
Kon Kan, el proyecto del canadiense Barry Harris, publica el single “I Beg Your Pardon (I Never Promised You a Rose Garden)” en 1988. Dropping the needle in this episode of Behind The Vinyl: Ivan Doroschuk of Men Without Hats explains how their song “Safety Dance” became a hit thanks to dance clubs and a certain dance called “Pogoing”. Barry Harris and Kevin Wynne of Kon Kan share their memories about the song “I Beg Your Pardon” and the many challenges involved with making a hit song. We close the episode with a very charismatic Dennis DeYoung of Styx reminiscing about “Babe” and how it was never meant to be a Styx song, but rather a gift to his wife. Episode 85: Forgotten 80s II - The Eighties Strike Back (Fiction Factory, Vince Clarke & Paul Quinn, Kon Kan, The Ocean Blue) Another busy summer is already underway for Brian and Sarah, so they decided to do a second volume of a listener-suggested idea from last year: Forgotten 80s songs. (Thanks again for the idea, Charles Cotham!) Each host selected two songs that may have faded from-- or never even made it to-- people's memories, and the ensuing discussion for each song covers the typical topics such as release history, chart positions, and videos. Also in this episode, Brian shocks Sarah by professing his love of a particular childhood game, Brian sings the praises of a particular on-line music subscription service that he recently discovered, and both Brian and Sarah are happy to have the opportunity to discuss their recent front-row attendance at an Ocean Blue concert, where not only was the "forgotten 80s" song played, but also songs from their fantastic just-released new album. This week it's a duo from Canada who jumped into the sampling craze of the late 1980s and then tried a few different things that really didn't work for them in the 1990s. Do you want to hustle? Do you want to salsa?

Mix) - Simple Minds Notes and other random things: First, apologies to Kon Kan fans. I had fully intended to include a remix of "I Beg Your Pardon" in this episode. But I didn't. Why? Well, I've found that early Sunday mornings are about the most opportune time for me to record podcasts now - really early. And in my half-awake, half-asleep state I cued up the wrong tune. In all my years of DJ-ing/podcasting, I can't ever recall cuing up a song I had no intention of using. It's funny, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the beats wouldn't match and it wasn't until 3 or so minutes later that I realized I was cuing up the wrong tune. At that point, I didn't have enough time to switch to a different song, so I just went with it. So, for all you Pet Shop Boys fans out there, you get two PSB tunes in this podcast with only a single song separating them. It works, I suppose, but I generally prefer to use only one song per artist in each 'cast. I guess there's a first time for everything, right? Speaking of a first time for everything, after 45 episodes, Bomb The Bass finally appears in song form and not in a production or remix vein. I alluded to "Beat Dis" in episode #41 as CRC featured the Bomb The Bass Mix of Depeche Mode's song "Strangelove" as the lead-off track. One of the early dance tracks to incorporate sampling into the mix, "Beat Dis" was the first single from Bomb The Bass (aka Tim Simenon) and had upwards of 72 samples contained within. Along with ground-breaking tracks, "Pump Up the Volume" by MARRS and "Theme from S'Express" by S'Express, "Beat Dis" heralded the arrival of sampling as a viable artform. The track was huge in Europe, reaching #2 on the UK Singles Chart. It also peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart for one solitary week, marking the only charted hit for Bomb The Bass in the United States. I have a real soft spot for the track I'd like to mention next. The band is T42 and the track is "Don't Let My Love". These guys were on the upswing and on the cusp of breaking out in a big way from the Dallas-Ft.Worth market during my time there in the early 90s. Orignally a duo consisting of Jay Gillian and Jimron Goff, vocalist Will Loconto supplanted Goff as the lead singer in 1989. After the release of a cassette EP (remember those?) called Hot On Top, they gained steady airplay on 94.5 The Edge radio station, which was home to all the great alternative bands back in the day. One of my many record store haunts back then, Oak Lawn Records picked up the band for a 12" single of "Don't Let My Love", which did well enough to attract the attention of Columbia Records, who signed the group. They released the full-length album, Intruder, in 1992, which was produced by Paul Robb from Information Society. It's hard not to hear the similarities to Information Society on "Don't Let My Love" and other songs on the album as well. In an ironic twist, Loconto quit the band in 1993, setting out to work with Information Society. While Gillian brought in other musicians to keep the T42 fires burning, the band's star faded and the group melted wistfully into the retro ether. Still, they left behind some tasty pop sugar for our consumption, even doing a very respectable cover of "Let Me Go" by Heaven 17. If you're into upbeat electro-pop, Intruder is definitely worth a listen. And if you're from the DFW area, the album and this song should be a reminder of an excellent time when the DFW local music scene was king. Taken from his 1982 album of the same name, Peter Godwin's "Images In Heaven" resembles more of a cult classic than a bonafide mega-hit. Formerly a member of the short-lived glam rock band Metro, along with Duncan Browne and Sean Lyons, Godwin is probably best remembered for his solo effort, "Images In Heaven", though you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone outside of devout new wave lovers who are very familiar with the song. David Bowie may argue the "best-remembered" point, as Metro's song "Criminal World" made enough of an impression on Mr. Stardust to induce a cover tune. Still, outside of 1983's Correspondence album and a Best Of compilation released in 1998 on Oglio Records, Godwin's scant musical output has always left new wave junkies wishing for something more. Something more ... also the sentiment I feel about Seven Red Seven. Chicago natives and band mates, Mitchell Adrian and David Michael, formed the group in the early 90s and had only a couple of releases issued to minor success before going on to production work for other musicians. However, their time together as a band produced one of the more under-rated and under-appreciated synth-pop albums in Shelter, which was released on Speed Records in 1991. The album included the song here, "That Way Again" and "Thinking Of You" (which appeared in remix form in CRC episode #34). Both were issued as singles. However, the rest of the album, much like Intruder by T42, is a synth-pop delight and a must-have for any synth-pop completist, especially for fans of Red Flag, Cause & Effect, Anything Box, Cetu Javu and others. The group would record just one more album, Bass State Coma, in 1994, and an interesting cover of "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder before moving into the production field. Truly a shame their total musical output was not much, much greater. P.S. Go buy Shelter! The last band I'd like to mention in this episode is the band Data. Fronted by Georg Kajanus, who made waves in the 70s with his band Sailor, Kajanus left Sailor in 1978 to dabble in electronic music. From this, Data was born. The track here, In Blue ... DJ, is a hybrid mix by Razormaid! Records of a couple of tracks from Data's third and final album, Elegant Machinery. Their other releases include 1983's 2-Time and 1981's Opera Electronica. In 1995, Eternity Records released a compilation album called Accumulator containing the second and third albums in their entirety plus the track "Fallout" from the Opera Electronica album. That's it for this episode. I'll be back soon with another new episode. Thanks for listening!

Welcome to the annual 2K14 Fall Edition! I'm talking about bodies movin, non-stop groovin, asses shakin, floors are breakin, queens are freakin, ho's are creepin, divas flowing and did I mention HOT COWBOYS? LOL You'll notice a familiar trend throughout this set as there is one common denominator holding this shit together …Mr. Barry Harris or Mr. Harris one half of the AWESOME Thunderpuss team, but only if you're nasty. Lately, gurrrlfriend has been on FIRE! Just make sure to keep him out of the ice-bucket challenge; we don't wanna cool down his streak. Barry takes on the Zedd produced track “Break Free” by Ariana Grande and pumps in some classic Thunderpuss beats while keeping it fresh with an updated sound for today's floors. Watch out for the amazing piano breakdown; you'll think he mashed it up with some early Mariah but it's pure Ariana. Equally, he attacked the classic “Stranger in My House” by Tamia and updated the original Thunderpuss mix from back in the day with fresh new beats and another delicious piano breakdown 2/3 of the way in. Barry also pumps up the deep house hit “Hideaway” by Canadian newcomer Keisza. Using Antoine Clamaran's classic “Dr. Drum” as inspiration, he pulls us in slowly until all hell breaks loose towards the end. Listening to the original, I would have never thought to match the two songs up but shit if it doesn't work! Joe Gauthreaux is currently riding high with his tweaky “Bye Felicia.” The whole package comes with a bucket full of stealthy remixes for the floor, but the one that caught my attention the most was by Wayne G. Listen close folks, there's a solid mashup with Kim English's “Unspeakable Joy” or even Madonna's “Beautiful Stranger” in there just begging to happen. I'm just sayin. As I write this, Party Favorz girlfriend Erika Jayne is sitting on top the Billboard Club Play charts with her latest “PAINKILLR.” While it took me a while to get into this song, after a few spins I've been all over it. Mike Cruz channels his inner Danny Verde and spins the song into a dark, tribal progressive monster that just sucks you in and squeezes tight. As usual, I like to try to close these sets out on a sunny note. While I realize I've been beating this dead horse since early Summer, I was waiting for the final mixes to drop for this 80s classic. Specifically, I was waiting for 7th Heaven's version, which did not disappoint. Kon Kan (an early project of …you guessed it, Barry Harris) had a major hit with “I Beg Your Pardon.” The song hooks itself around a big synthesized loop, which 7H stayed true to while sampling the early 70s country classic “Rose Garden” by Lynn Anderson. The only thing these guys left out was the GQ “rock-freak” drop in the middle of the song; likely for licensing reasons. No problem, your humble host put it back in for ya making this a truly remarkable update for those who fondly remember the original. And, if you don't, get into it. This is going to be it for September so I can start working on the new premium content version of this site. I've already hit a few stumbling blocks, but I'm fairly certain I'll figure it out. I'm also about to start taking some coding courses to get myself up to speed in CSS and Java. Who knows, maybe I'll make an app ya'll buy one day and retire off of that LOL. Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend. I should be back around the beginning of October. Until then …ENJOY! With all the work, headaches and overall general crap trying to get Party Favorz moved over to Wordpress and Libsyn, my new hosting provider for the actual podcast, I was afraid that this year's Pride was gonna get lost in the shuffle. While working on Gay Days, I began making the rainbow connection and ideas just started seeping out my ears. Then, I saw a promotional release by Matt Consola's Swishcraft, you know the GAYEST music label in the world based out of San Francisco, that featured a remix of the late 80's classic I Beg Your Pardon by Kon Kan. That lead me to their Facebook page, where I was reminded that Barry Harris, you know the GAYEST half of Thunderpuss was also half of the one-hit wonder group in the late 80's. I Beg Your Pardon is scheduled for a full release in mid-July with all new remixes from a variety of DJs. This appears to be an exciting project and I can't wait to get my paws on the new updates of this classic song. Ultimately, Got Pride? 2014 is a culmination of remixes that plays like 7 degrees of Swishcraft. Virtually every song or DJ in it has some connection back to the GAYEST label in the world, including the GAYEST of them all Wayne G LOL. Sprinkled with some newer updated gay anthems and a few notable new releases, Got Pride? 2014 smashes the objective and rains down like a Skittles commercial. Taste the RAINBOW indeed! We may only be halfway through Pride month but Party Favorz has even more goodness up our sleeves and it's highly recommended you stay close to the updates coming your way between now and the end of the month. DON'T BE A LOSER AND MISS OUT! Instead, be the coolest kid on the block armed with the latest and greatest dance music podcasts to show off to all your friends at pool parties and whatever gatherings you may be attending this summer. I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend and until the next one …ENJOY! Album : Got Pride? 2014Genre : Circuit, House, Gay AnthemsYear : 2014Total Time : 01:28:02 1. Lady Gaga - G.U.Y.
