Late February marks the most miserable time for those living in cold climates. Freezing temperatures have been stealing a bit of our souls since late October, and we still have weeks until spring graces us with her presence. For those who battle winter blues and have no fear, Dr. Drew Pinsky is here to share his expert advice with those fighting the winter blues (and bestow his wisdom surrounding anxiety, panic disorder, and OCD upon those of us living with them year-round.)  Dr. Drew and Kennedy also reminisce about how their friendship began in the 90s — when then-intern Kennedy would sneak into KROQ-FM radio station to catch a conversation with the Loveline host.  Learn more about your ad choices. Last year we accompanied our Doug Jones Day episode with a review of the cult classic SPOOKIES, featuring an ensemble of characters under siege from an evil sorcerer and his peculiar assortment of supernatural minions. This year we're following a similar pattern, but swapping out the Jay Estate in New York for Castello Di Giove in Italy, a locale that will be familiar to fans of the movies of Charles Band and Empire International Pictures. For our latest episode we're reviewing SPELLCASTER (filmed in 1988, but not released until 1992) from director Rafal Zielinski, featuring Adam Ant, Bunty Baily and KROQ-FM's own Richard Blade. We do start the episode with a bit of sad talk about recent life events for our hosts, but we had a tremendously fun time discussing the movie afterwards and we hope everyone enjoys the episode. If you want to skip over the sad bits, the movie discussion begins around the 13:30 mark. As of this release, the movie is free to stream on both Tubi and the Youtube channel for Full Moon Pictures, and absolutely recommend checking out the movie before listening to this review. And also be sure to see SPOOKIES if you haven't already, as it comes up a LOT in this review and is becoming an oddly integral movie for our pod. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Becca James, the girl with two first names. Frank and Becca will announce the Karns Christmas Parade live on the Karns Network YouTube channel on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/live/iYgkrOlnE6s?si=DTpkaMxnRNclPy4L  Frank has finished recording the 2024 season of Tennessee Scholars' Bowl. which will begin airing weekdays at 5:30 p.m. on January 8, 2024 on East Tennessee PBS. One of the students gave Frank a tie with the Scholars' Bowl logo.  While looking for vocabulary words, Frank saw that the word whelm means engulf, submerge, or bury. Frank was talking with a married couple at church and they offered to send him some art history questions for Scholars' Bowl. A few days later, Frank saw the couple at a clothing store and loudly called out, “Where are those art history pictures I was supposed to see?”  Becca is surprised to hear that Kohl's has dropped the brands of shirts and jackets that her husband and Frank like to wear. Frank says Kohl's has broken up with him because he has aged out of their demographic. Frank looked online for Chaps and Van Heusen shirts and saw that he could buy them across the street at JCPenney.  Becca will participate in Whamageddon during December. To win, you have to avoid hearing Wham's “Last Christmas.” Frank wants to hear the song everyday because it's one of his favorites and he likes playing it on the radio. Frank is on FUN 105.9 weekdays from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Listen online at https://www.fun1059.com/  When Frank worked on the Kevin & Bean Show at KROQ-FM, the show's comedy writer was Jimmy Kimmel. Shadoe Stevens started off in radio at 11-years-old in his hometown of Jamestown, North Dakota. Urban Legend has it that LIFE Magazine picked up the story that he was on the air as "The World's Youngest Disc Jockey." He graduated from high school, then for three years majored in Art at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, before switching to Drama and Journalism at the University of Arizona for another two years, all the while working full time in radio to help put himself through school. It was then that he was given the chance to move to Boston to become a DJ at WRKO. On his way to Boston, his name was changed to Shadoe in a phone call from Alamogordo, New Mexico. In one year, his huge number one success at WRKO in Boston led him to Los Angeles. With his resonant voice and command on the airwaves, Stevens became one of the City's most popular radio personalities. He then began his first major television career move as the sidekick/announcer for "The Steve Allen Show." Back in radio a short time later, he would become a legendary Program Director, creating and launching "World Famous KROQ-FM. Leaving radio after creating three number one L.A. stations - KRLA, KROQ-FM, and KMET-FM - Shadoe went into advertising. He created the Branding, Advertising and Marketing campaign for a West Coast home electronics company called The Federated Group. The campaign increased sales 500%. In four years, the Federated Group grew from 14 local stores to 78 superstores in 5 states. It was one of the most successful regional advertising campaigns in U.S. history and the first regional ad campaign ever to have received a 2-page spread in Time Magazine. His Awards in advertising include Clio Awards and the Big Apple Award. In radio, he received the Billboard Magazine Personality of the Year Award. Shadoe's more than 1,100 different television commercials for Federated led first to a 3-picture deal with Dino DeLaurentis Entertainment and the cult movie "TRAXX," to the number one TV series "Hollywood Squares," then to the Fred Silverman produced one hour CBS series "Max Monroe: Loose Cannon," followed by the hit CBS sitcom "Dave's World." Along the way, Shadoe replaced Casey Kasem as the host of "American Top 40." This became the biggest radio show in the world with one billion listeners a week in 110 countries. During this time, Shadoe was a guest star on more than a dozen television series including "Beverly Hills 90210," "Baywatch," "The Larry Sanders Show," "Caroline in the City," "Clueless," "Fast Track," and "Burke's Law." In motion pictures, Shadoe played the title role in "Traxx," Fred in "Mr. Saturday Night," Maxwell in "Bucket of Blood," and Djony Dakota in "Shadoevision" for HBO. Shadoe was the Founder, Chairman, and President of RhythmRadio - "The Sound of the World in a Good Mood," that was the first world-wide music network and delivered programming on the radio in 30 countries and programming on the Internet delivered in 7 languages. Shadoe created "Cabo Wabo Radio" for rock star Sammy Hagar, designing an "all up-all the time" rock music format with studios in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and Bel Air, California. It became the number one Alternative Music format online in the world. Shadoe then created "Mental Radio," - mentalradio.net - a talk/entertainment radio show described as "Coast to Coast" as if done by Monty Python." It's a show about the extraordinary and those who laugh in the face of fear. Visit www.mentalradio.net. Shadoe was the voice of "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" from 2005 to 2015, and has continued to be the voice of countless commercials and television shows including The Grammys, The Emmys, and Comic Relief. Shadoe has been "enthusiastically married" since 1986 to his third wife, Beverly. He especially likes sharing stories, what he calls “mini movies,” in his Mind Matters series showcasing people from all walks of life–from a veteran with PTSD (post traumatic stress syndrome) who is now making bracelets, to a homeless couple.   Dr. Alfiee also was moved by his story of a superstar Peloton bike instructor who was steps away from taking her life before her mother intuitively felt something was off.  She checked her daughter's phone, which ended up stopping her from jumping when the light kept popping up. Swedish Egil on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/23/22 About Swedish Egil - Egil just wanted to groove…   To get the full story of GROOVE RADIO, you have to know about the man behind the groove, Swedish Egil. For nearly four decades, Egil has been bringing fresh music to the world's ears, starting with 10 years as a DJ at KROQ-FM in the 80's where he helped break many artists into the mainstream including New Order, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, UB40 and Front 242. Always on the pulse of new and exciting global sounds, Egil spearheaded much of the music and the bands that formed the Punk, New Wave, and eventually the underground Dance movements of the early 90's. Egil then accepted a rare opportunity to develop his Music Director skills at the now legendary MARS-FM in Los Angeles – the station that broke techno / rave music on U.S. radio with The Orb, Prodigy, and Moby.   In 1992, Egil began to focus on the future beats of club culture when the first radio broadcast of his own GROOVE RADIO INTERNATIONAL program was heard from the Arizona desert. The feedback was immediate. Listeners began to demand this new electronic sound, this breath of fresh air and positive vibes. GROOVE RADIO soon became the catalyst for electronic music's exposure across the entire states. It was the first media outlet in the US to cater wholly to the underground community – bringing DJs, artists, and personalities from all over the world to play, spin, or just share moments of their lives across the airwaves.   With early presence on the internet back in 1995, GROOVE RADIO was the first to feature global webcasts with artists such as Future Sound of London and Orbital. This true commitment to championing the art of the DJ has helped bring into the GROOVE RADIO studio such talents as The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Paul van Dyk, Sasha, John Digweed, Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, Faithless, LTJ Bukem, Dimitri From Paris, BT, Roni Size & Reprazent, Carl Cox, Roger Sanchez, and many more.   Since its inception, GROOVE RADIO has celebrated over 2500 syndicated shows, launched the first 24/7 radio station in Los Angeles dedicated to DJ culture, became a top 5 internet stations in the world, and has released an acclaimed series of GROOVE RADIO PRESENTS recordings. With a worldwide audience at GROOVERADIO.COM, Egil maintains his vision and the promise from years ago to make digital dance music available to the masses.   About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience. Until we learn to truly love and trust ourselves, a lack of self-acceptance will always lead to unhealthy behaviors.    Even with the healthiest training and fitness routines, if we don’t love ourselves we’ll take care of our bodies with the wrong intention. The truth is when we train because we don’t love ourselves, the ends do not justify the means.    Fitness isn’t a monolithic thing that’s only determined by how we look; it’s also about how we feel about ourselves and our overall mental health. The intention behind why we exercise matters, it must be healthy and enriching.     Why do so many fitness-obsessed people train for all the wrong reasons, and how can we correct it?    What should our intention be when it comes to working out and eating healthy? In this episode, I’m joined by TV and radio personality, Mike Catherwood. He shares his incredible life story, including overcoming addiction, changing his direction and achieving “real health”.  I used to use the gym and my eating as a way to escape my reality and get outside of myself; but training should be another tool to help you get in touch with yourself. -Mike Catherwood     Three Takeaways    Many people work out and eat healthy because they are disgusted with themselves. They pursue fitness because they want to escape themselves, and want to skip past the work of loving, trusting and accepting themselves.    When it comes to coronavirus we can adopt a healthy mindset. Painting an overly optimistic picture of what’s going on isn’t healthy, but neither is painting things in an overly-pessimistic way.  We can choose what we put our energy and focus on. The goals we pursue in our lives shouldn’t leave us worn out, they should enrich and energize us and make us better.     Guest Bio-  Mike is a radio and TV personality. He is known primarily for his work at KROQ-FM on Kevin and Bean and as the co-host of Loveline from 2010 to 2016. Mike hosts the podcast Mikey Likes You. Rolo McGinty in conversation talking about life in the Woodentops  The band formed in 1983 in South London with an initial line-up of Rolo McGinty (vocals, guitar, formerly of The Wild Swans and The Jazz Butcher), Simon Mawby (guitar), Alice Thompson (keyboards), Frank DeFreitas (bass guitar), and Paul Hookham (drums). After a debut single, "Plenty" on Food Records in 1984, which received a glowing review from Morrissey in Melody Maker, they signed to the independent label Rough Trade Records, releasing a series of singles in 1985 and their debut album, Giant, in 1986. Generally well received by critics, the album's sound was characterised by acoustic guitars, but also featured accordion, marimba, strings, and trumpet sounds. The album reached No. 35 on the UK Albums Chart. A single from the album, "Good Thing", reached No. 7 on the UK Indie Chart. The band then became more experimental and frenetic when playing live, using more electronic sounds. This first became apparent as documented on the live album Live Hypno Beat (1987), which was recorded in Los Angeles in 1986. The band also started to become more 'raw' and unpredictable live, becoming one of the most exciting independent groups from the UK, while gaining an early hit on the burgeoning club scene in Ibiza with '"Why". In 1987, Thompson left to be replaced by Anne Stephenson of The Communards. The more experimental mood continued on the second album Wooden Foot Cops on the Highway, released the following year, which failed to live up to the expectations set by their debut. Most notably, the listeners of Los Angeles radio station KROQ-FM voted their song "Stop This Car" number 15 out of 106 in the KROQ Top 106.7 Countdown of 1988, outperforming many more established acts, and one of the album's standout tracks, "Wheels Turning", became a dancefloor favourite. The Woodentops continued to play live, touring the world until 1992, and tracks such as "Tainted World" became a regular on New York radio station Kiss FM with DJ Tony Humphries. Vocalist and guitarist Rolo McGinty, who also wrote all Woodentops' songs, resurfaced with the DJ band Pluto in the 1990s, the Dogs Deluxe electronica project and also provided vocals for Gary Lucas's, Gods and Monsters. Guitarist Simon Mawby was briefly a member of The House of Love in the early 1990s. The Woodentops returned to live performances in September 2006 and, in October 2009, they performed in a special concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London's South Bank. They also curated the events in the Front Room of the same theatre with an exhibition of works by artist Panni Bharti, and concerts by musicians Worm, Othon and Ernesto Tomasini.
