In this episode, we talk with Kimberley Pittman-Schulz. For over 20 years, Kimberley has been the guiding hand behind successful donor strategies for major universities and child development organizations globally. Known for her candid approach, she whole-heartedly steps foot into territories many avoid – discussing end-of-life matters and grieving. A passion for supporting people through loss prompted her to become a grief and life transitions mentor, providing compassionate guidance during times of profound change. And now she has connected her work as a grief counselor to her work with nonprofits through legacy giving guidance. There is so much about legacy giving that we don't understand as a sector, and many of us avoid the topic altogether because of the vulnerabilities it activates. Which is exactly why I wanted to navigate these waters with Kimberly.  The truth is, the world of philanthropy was not where Kimberley Pittman-Schulz expected to find her life's purpose. Having worked extensively in various roles over 20 years, she gradually found herself becoming a bridge between donors and the organizations they wished to support. She facilitated conversations around grief, loss, and end-of-life decisions - topics often avoided by even the most seasoned professionals. Yet, in those emotionally charged conversations, Kimberley found a deep well of understanding and connection. She discovered the transformative power of these discussions on donors' giving patterns and their perception of legacy. Her unique ability to empathize and engage without crossing professional boundaries earned her the admiration and trust of her donors, and a fulfilling career that brought a profound sense of purpose and meaning to her life. This episode will help you…. Understand the art of deepening donor relationships through legacy giving. Realize the profound impact of comprehending your donors' driving forces in fostering substantial involvement. Gain knowledge on navigating sensitive matters around loss and grief, and how it promotes donor trust and openness. Understand the vast potential of planned giving and how it unlocks more than mere financial gains. This episode with Dr Claire Routley, an expert in expert legacy fundraising, was recorded in early March 2020, when the world felt very different. Nevertheless, in a time of increased home-working, our subjects of culture change and breaking down inter-team barriers now feel more relevant than ever. So I'm really pleased to share the episode again. We talk about a piece of research Claire carried out on behalf of the National Trust, all about how to increase interest in promoting legacies across the various teams within a charity. Though we talk largely about the cross promotion of legacy giving, in truth these ideas can be applied to any concept that should be understood by various teams, rather than just the so-called specialists. Claire explains the three key themes she discovered and brings these to life with examples of specific tactics that various charities have used in their change management programmes. When you have a thriving monthly giving program you aren't just building in financial sustainability for your organization, you're also increasing the number of people you can have conversations with for other opportunities. So what do you do with all these contacts? Patrick Kirby is here to share all the amazing ways you can create deeper relationships with your monthly donors. What you'll learn: → why a monthly giving program is a good idea. → how to start conversations with monthly donors. → why you shouldn't be afraid to ask. → leveraging your CRM to help you. → getting your board members involved. Want to skip ahead? Here are key takeaways: [11:05] Who should you start conversations with? Start with those that have given the longest or have given the most number of times. These people are primed and more likely to have a conversation with you about legacy or major gifts. Focus more on longevity vs total gifts. [20:13] Consistency and clarity matter in your messaging. Don't be afraid to say the same stories, to reach out over and over, and to show up via different communication tools. People aren't paying attention and need to see your messaging over and over again to connect and take action. [23:39] Leverage your CRM. Put in reminders so that you automatically know when to follow up with people. Then personalize the conversation by sharing their unique impact! Use their donor-versary or other milestones as an excuse to reach out and say thank you! Always make them the hero. [28:54] Your board members can support you in reaching out. This does a couple of things. #1 it allows them to share their impact and #2 it allows them to hear more stories from donors. Both will create deeper connections. [32:26] Patrick's quick hit list. Identify who has given to you the longest. Figure out how many you can reasonably connect with weekly and who is doing the reach out. Write down questions that you want answers to. Rinse and repeat. For many donors, the largest gift they will ever make to charity is the one they leave in their will. Carrying on their legacy and keeping alive the values that were important to your donors in their lifetime is a tremendous responsibility. It's also a tremendous opportunity for you to increase your organization's impact in the world. Most donors only include charities in their will that have done a great job of communicating shared values, stewarding them, and building the kinds of relationships that are mutually uplifting and significant. That's why the state of your legacy giving program is also a great indicator of the overall health of your fundraising operations—because valuable donor relationships don't happen overnight. If you are ready to launch, build, or improve your legacy giving program, today's show is for you.We are talking to Hala Al-Madi from Amnesty International. Hala has been the Legacy Giving Marketing Officer at Amnesty International in Ottawa Canada since 2013. She has helped lead the program's growth from $600,000 to just over 1.4 million, and she's also grown the number of expectancies by 75%. And over the last few years, she's doubled the number of self identifying prospects. Hala introduced a range of marketing approaches to achieve this growth, including trickle email marketing, direct mail marketing, sharing testimonials of supporters, launching donor surveys, and creating high-touch supporter outreach points.Today on the podcast, Hala is going to share how Amnesty grew their program specifically by doing things that charities of all sizes and budgets can do. What work would you like to continue for years to come? You will learn how you can make a huge difference without millions of dollars. Your legacy — a healthy legacy — can be solidified with far less and do far more good than you can possibly imagine.   Chuck is also joined by Kim Intino, Director of Legacy Giving for the Physicians Committee, who walks us through how to simplify the process of cementing your legacy so that you can support the tireless efforts of the Physicians Committee well into the future.   Get ready to change the world.   Legacy Giving Planning Event Register: http://bit.ly/LegacyEventPCRM — — — Kim Intino kintino@pcrm.org — — — Gregory J. I recorded this interview with Dr Claire Routley, an expert in expert legacy fundraising, in early March 2020, when the world felt very different. Nevertheless, our subjects of culture change and breaking down barriers within your charity, are as relevant as ever. If you want to hear my first interview with Claire, which is all about ways to make it easier to have conversations about legacies with your supporters, do check out episode 28 of this podcast. In this episode we chat to Rob Cope, Director of Remember A Charity, about charitable legacy gifts and legacy fundraising: what they are, what role they play in the overall charity landscape and how they have changed during the COVID pandemic. Including How big a part of the landscape for charitable giving in the UK are legacies? How has this changed over time? If legacies have been a growth area in recent years (as many figures suggest), why is this? Is there greater awareness, more fundraising, or are people simply more likely to leave wills? What particular role do legacies play in the overall funding mix for charities? (i.e. what is their unique value?) Why do people leave legacies? How to fundraisers tap into some of the complex psychological drivers? How do legacy gifts relate to other forms of giving at an individual level? (i.e. do most legacy gifts come from people who already give in other ways, or do they come instead of other gifts?) Does discomfort when it comes to talking about death present an ongoing barrier to legacy fundraising? Does uncertainty about the legal status of legacy gifts (and a number of high-profile cases of legal challenge) present a risk? How has the COVID crisis affect the charitable legacy market? Has increases awareness of mortality resulted in more will-making (and consequently more legacy gifts?) Have there been issues with existing legacy gifts during the crisis? (Either in terms of sustaining them, or finalising them in some cases). What effect has the impact of the pandemic on normal end-of-life processes such as funerals had on legacy giving? (E.g. has it resulted in more in-memory gifts from those who have been unable to commemorate the loss of loved ones properly?) How has new legacy fundraising been affected by lockdown measures and restrictions on physical interaction? Have fundraisers had to be more sensitive to the challenges of discussing legacy gifts at a time when many older people have felt particularly nervous or afraid as a result of the pandemic? What impact might the short and medium term economic downturn caused by the pandemic have on the legacy market?   Related Links:   Remember A Charity’s website Remember A Charity on Twitter Civil Society article: The Wombles to feature in this year’s Remember A Charity Week campaign Our CAF Giving Thought podcast episode “Philanthropy, Death & Taxes Part 1” CAF Giving Thought blog, “Millions Now Giving Will Never Die: Life Extension, Whole-Brain Emulation and Philanthropy”

In this episode, Kirsten and Michael dive into the details behind this gift planning approach, how the landscape has shifted with recent changes in law, and how families can successfully go about becoming involved in charitable giving. In fact, at some point, each charity has felt confused as to why they are not getting even greater amounts of support from donors given the worthiness of their mission. In this conversation with Peter Barrow - marketing guru, university lecturer, writer, business owner, philanthropist and co-author of the book Worthy & Prepared - the notion being 'worthy' is explored as a purposeful activity rather than an assumed fact. 2014 LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE FOR WOMEN IN THE ARTS keynote speaker Patricia Wilson Aden, President and CEO of the African American Museum in Philadelphia Saturday, October 18th 8:30 am – 4:30 pm More than 100 women (and a few men!) learned how to nurture their artistic voices, envision the future, design 21st Century careers in the arts and overcome fear of success at Moore’s 2014 Leadership Conference for Women in the Arts. Held on October 18, 2014, the daylong conference explored current topics related to college women who are, or who are interested in being, leaders in art and design fields. Moore President Cecelia Fitzgibbon kicked off the morning by welcoming conference attendees from Moore and other colleges and organizations. “Today you will all discover that you are leaders and hopefully learn how you might grow and think about your leadership in a different way,” she said. “Yes, leadership can be learned.” She stressed that credibility is the foundation of leadership and something that is earned over time. “Credibility, respect and loyalty are earned when leaders demonstrate by their actions that they believe in the inherent self worth of others.” Fitzgibbon then introduced keynote speaker Patricia Wilson Aden, President and CEO of the African American Museum in Philadelphia, who spoke to students about being authentic, finding a way to push through adversity and be adventurous and strategic in their career choices. "I've come to firmly believe that life is 10 percent circumstance and 90 percent what you do with the circumstance," she said. "Now that you've made your choices, how do you define success?" Aden said she finds her passion, fulfillment and measure of success not in the amount of money she makes, but in the sense of adventure. "Know yourself well enough to not only know why you do what you do but to embrace the why of why you do it. Own it and celebrate it. Be purposeful in how you use your why. Talent alone is not enough to compete or succeed in today's cultural marketplace." Following her remarks, students broke into the first of three breakout sessions on a variety of topics led by strong female leaders and artists, including Ellen Owens, Dr. Judith Weinstein and Moore students and alumni. During one breakout session, Moore alumna Kia Weatherspoon ’10, Interior Design, emphasized the power of networking, building relationships, being sincere and smiling. “Be the best version of yourself all the time,” she said. “You have to believe in yourself.” Delia Ascher, a first-year Fashion Design student, attended a session about conflict resolution for women in leadership. She said she learned how to appropriately handle complicated business situations. “It was important to learn tips on how to resolve conflicts as a woman,” she said. “Women aren’t always as respected in the business world. I would like to be an entrepreneur and own my own small business one day, so it’s important to learn about the business world.” Flor Jazmin Gutierrez, a junior Curatorial Studies major, said she learned that “there are a lot of people going through a turning point with combining what they learned at school with the professional world. Everything adds up to figuring out what your core values are and that develops you as a person, personally and professionally.” A lunch and panel discussion held in the Great Hall was moderated by President Fitzgibbon and featured Beth Feldman Brandt, Executive Director of the Stockton Rush Bartol Foundation; Magda Martinez, Director of Programs & Community Engagement at Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial; Rachel McCausland, Manager of Leadership & Legacy Giving at Opera Philadelphia; and Laurie McGahey, Director of Development at the James Michener Museum. The panelists spoke about their career trajectories, how they took advantage of opportunities, mistakes they had made professionally and their leadership philosophies. “How you take advantage of opportunities is really important,” Martinez told the students. “How you take advantage of your education right now will reap rewards for so long. All things are connected in the end. To know a little about everything is a good thing.” The conference concluded with a networking reception in Fox Commons.
