Johnny Iguana grew up in Philadelphia, where he studied piano from age eight and played piano and organ in blues bands from age 16. He moved to New York City at age 22, where he met one of his greatest musical heroes, Junior Wells. He was hired by Junior after auditioning live at the Boston House of Blues, and moved to Chicago in February 1994. He toured with the Junior Wells Band for three years, toured with Otis Rush and recorded with Carey (and Lurrie) Bell, Lil’ Ed and more. Johnny went on to play on Grammy-nominated albums by Junior Wells, Chicago Blues: A Living History and the Muddy Waters 100 Band, and he played all the piano on the “Chicago Plays the Stones” album (2018). Those releases saw Johnny play on record with Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Derek Trucks, Gary Clark Jr., Johnny Winter and more. Now, after appearing on dozens of blues albums released by other artists, Johnny is set to release his debut blues-piano album as a leader in 2020 on the legendary Delmark Records label. “Johnny Iguana’s Chicago Spectacular!” features Lil’ Ed, John Primer, Billy Boy Arnold, Bob Margolin, Matthew Skoller, Billy Flynn, Kenny Smith, Bill Dickens and Michael Caskey.
In childhood, Williams and his half-brother James "Pookie" Young received encouragement and tutelage from their uncle, the blues guitarist, songwriter and recording artist J. B. Hutto, and by 1975 the half-siblings had formed the first version of the Blues Imperials. Since 1989, the band's lineup has been Williams (lead guitar and vocals), Michael Garrett (rhythm guitar and vocals), James Young (bass) and Kelly Littleton (drums). Living Blues magazine described the band as "Rough-and-ready South and West Side blues...Ed's swirling, snarling slide guitar work can be riveting, and The Imperials pound out blues-rock riffs and rhythms behind him as if they're overdosing on boogie juice." Guitar Player called the band "a snarling boogie-blues machine." A decade later, Alligator Records offered them the chance to record a track, "Young Thing", for a compilation album, New Bluebloods (1987). Producer and label owner Bruce Iglauer encouraged them to record additional material, and they cut a full album's worth of material at that session, released as Roughhousin' (1986). They then appeared at music festivals and toured widely. Their second album, Chicken, Gravy & Biscuits, was released in 1989, and their third, What You See Is What You Get, in 1992. At this point the group disbanded. Williams issued two solo albums, Keep On Walking, on which he was joined by Dave Weld, a former member of the Blues Imperials, and Who's Been Talking (1998), pairing Williams with Willie Kent. In 1999 the release of Get Wild marked the group's reunion. It was followed by Heads Up (2002), Rattleshake (2006), Full Tilt (2008) and Jump Start (2012). Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials have appeared multiple times at the Chicago Blues Festival and festivals and clubs around the world. In June 2008, Williams played on Magic Slim's album Midnight Blues. In June 2009, Williams was a guest on the radio quiz show Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!, produced by Chicago Public Radio and National Public Radio, Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials have been nominated for eight Blues Music Awards as Band of the Year and have won that award twice.

When we did our Rock-and-Roll Christmas "rabbit hole" episode last year we realized that there are just too many Rocking Christmas songs to be held in a single podcast. So we're coming back to you this year with another selection of Christmas songs that rock!“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” by- Ronnie James Dio This selection from the former Rainbow and Black Sabbath front man puts a metal twist on a 16th century carol.“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” by The Barenaked Ladies A more mellow take on the same song features stripped down acoustics and harmonies. Sarah McLachlan is featured in this cover.“Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” by John Lennon Brian features the well-known original piece from John Lennon and Yoko Ono from 1971. They are joined by the Harlem Community Choir“Christmas” by The Who, from “Tommy”Rob brings us a deep cut from the rock opera Tommy. In this vignette, Tommy's father questions how Tommy can be saved given his inability to see, hear, or speak.“Do They Know It's Christmas?” by Band Aid This 1984 compilation was created as a means of providing support to famine victims in Ethiopia. Bob Geldof and an all-star cast of singers was assembled including Sting, Bono, Bananarama, Boy George, and Simon Le Bon.“Stone Soul Christmas” by Binky Griptite Wayne puts the soul in Christmas with this 2011 effort. Binky Griptite is a DJ in New York and was the guitarist for the Dap-Kings.“Christmas Presents Blues” by Jimmy Reed Wayne keeps the funk going with this rousing bass line and double entendre laden tune from 1971.“I'm Your Santa” by Lil' Ed and the Imperials We drift into the blues with this New Orleans-style cut from Alligator Records.“Celebrate Me Home” by Kenny Loggins Bruce features one from Loggins' debut solo album in 1977. While this has now become a Christmas standard, it was not released as a single at the time, and was not intended to become a standard.“Baby It's Cold Outside” by Frank Loesser Brian's pick is the Dean Martin 1959 cover of this classic. Loesser originally wrote this as a housewarming song. When MGM bought the song, Frank's wife was furious that he had sold it.“All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey Bruce took a little heat from the boys when he brings us this original piece from 1994 that has become a best-selling modern day Christmas song. Its Carey's biggest international hit, and the best selling Christmas single by a female artist overall.“Oh Tannenbaum” by Vince Guaraldi Christmas wouldn't be the same without “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” This piano jazz cover of the classic Christmas carol takes you to that show, and a rather dinky tree.“Come Home for Christmas” by the Eagles This 1978 cover is the first Eagles song to feature Timothy B. Schmit on bass after Randy Meisner left. The original version was released in 1960 by pianist Charles Brown.“Same Auld Lang Syne” by Dan FogelbergBrian features an autobiographical story from Fogelberg. This happened when he was returning home to Peoria when Jill went out for Egg Nog and Dan went out for whipping cream. Fogelberg did not reveal the name of he old flame, but she came forward after his death.LAUGH TRACK:“Walking Round in Women's Underwear” by Bob Rivers Wayne brings us into our "Laugh Track" part of the podcast with this comical take on Christmas and cross-dressing.“Hanukkah Song” by Adam SandlerWe finish off with this comical take on the Jewish holiday from Adam Sandler, where we find out that David Lee Roth, Henry Winkler, William Shattner, and Leonard Nimoy are all jewish. But OJ Simpson is NOT!

In this episode of Exploring the Blues in Chicago, Brett David Stewart sits down briefly with Keith Dixon of the Blues Heaven Foundation to discuss the important role independent record labels played in the formative years of Chicago blues. Dixon’s grandfather was Willie Dixon, and the foundation is located at the old Chess Records building and studio. Furthermore, Stewart discusses the blues with Bruce Iglauer, the founder of Alligator Records in the city of Chicago. With a catalog of over 300 releases, Alligator is responsible for some of the most legendary blues recordings in history. Koko Taylor, Lonnie Brooks, Johnny Winter, Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials, amongst countless others, have had their music released on Alligator.

Lil Ed Williams is one of a kind. With his trademark Fez hat which symbolizes an African crown and his torturous slide guitar, Lil Ed Williams embodies the spirit of his famous uncle, J.B. Hutto and has become one of the biggest names in the blues. He is an award winning artist who is set to release his ninth full-length recording for acclaimed Alligator records called ‘The Big Sound of Lil Ed & the Blues Imperials.’ When he hits the road to promote his new album, he’ll be greeted by mobs of devoted followers called “Ed Heads”; with popular late night talk-show host Conan O’Brien being their most high profile member.

Welcome back to Murphy's Saloon, Podcast Home of the Blues. I hope you had as much fun over the holidays as I did. I'm looking forward to the Murphy's Saloon Podcast getting bigger and better in 2006. I hope you have as much fun listening as I do putting the shows together. Since both Black & Tan Records, and Alligator Records joined the Podsafe Music Network in December, I think a show featuring artists from both labels was the obvious way to go this week. Hence, tonight's theme. • Ain't Good Lookin' by Billy Jones. • Running To New Orleans Byther Smith. • Mountain Top by Boo Boo Davis. • Jona Lee by Roomful of Blues. • Big City by Luther Allison. • Natural Man by Lil' Ed and The Blues Imperials. Also, Alligator Records is here, and Black & Tan Records is here. The Murphy's Saloon intro is from Rocket Science by Brain Buckit and the show outro is from Play This by Dave at the Chub Creek Podcast. If you'd like to see where some Murphy's Saloon listeners live, you can check out the Murphy's Friends map over here, and perhaps put up a push pin of your own.
