"I love adaptations. The beauty of adaptation, especially a classic, like Shakespeare and Chekhov or Ibsen, they're such a gift because they give you this beautiful framework, and it's almost like they're begging you to take it and make it your own," says writer/director Nia DaCosta about adapting Henrik Ibsen's 1891 play Hedda Gabler into her new film Hedda.   Set in the 1950s, the movie stars Tessa Thompson in the lead role, Imogen Poots as Thea, and reimagines the character Eilert Lovborg as a queer woman (now Eileen), played by Nina Hoss.  We chat with Nia DaCosta about her journey to becoming a filmmaker, genre hopping into horror with Candyman and the upcoming 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. She even made the superhero movie The Marvels. We also talk about the challenges of tackling the complicated, often cruel character of Hedda in the new film.  "When I read the play [Hedda Gabler]," says DaCosta, "I'm like, this woman is hilarious! She's absolutely absurd. In the play, she's so verbose roaming around this sitting room, yelling at everyone who comes in. I wanted to replicate that, but more through action. And then there's the empathy part of it. To me, her tragedy is that she will never know herself. It's a life's work to understand and know ourselves, our emotional world. I think because she is so cruel, because she is so unhappy, because she has made these decisions that have trapped herself in this life – that to me is really sad. But I don't want people to forgive her for what she's done, or to excuse it."  DaCosta also shares her advice on adapting someone else's story. "I think you have to know why you want to do it, and what it is you want to use the work to say. To let that 'why' sort of guide your pen. Ina Weisse war die Schauspielerei nie genug: Sie hat Philosophie und Filmregie studiert und dreht seit über 15 Jahren eigene Spielfilme. Ihr neuer Film „Zikaden“ handelt von Isabell, gespielt von Nina Hoss. Eheprobleme, ein unerfüllter Kinderwunsch und die Pflege ihrer kranken Eltern machen Isabell zu schaffen. Wie bei ihren früheren Filmen leuchtet Ina Weisse in die Wünsche ihrer Figuren hinein. Eine Tageszeitung sie deswegen „Menschenleserin“ genannt. Wir haben so etwas in der Art gesagt, als Jördis Triebel vor ein paar Wochen zu Gast in der "Hörbar Rust" war, wir werden so etwas in der Art sagen, wenn Mitte Juni die Episode mit Nina Hoss ausgestrahlt wird und ja, auch wenn heute Claudia Michelsen im Studio sitzt, müssen wir es so formulieren: Diese Schauspielerin ist eine Qualitätsgarantie, ein Geschenk und ein Gütesiegel für jede Serie und jeden Film, in dem sie mitwirkt. Diese drei Personen stehen absolut für sich, was sie eint, ist die Professionalität, mit der sie uns Zuschauende in die Geschichten hineinziehen. Claudia Michelsen, die 1969 in Dresden zur Welt kam, machte früh ernst mit dem Theater - ausnahmsweise mit 16 durfte sie sich für vier Jahre an der Ernst Busch Schauspielschule ausbilden lassen. Wer sie auf den Bühnen sah, hatte keine Zweifel. Ernsthaft war sie und sehr politisch, arbeitete mit Frank Castorf und Heiner Müller und bekam früh auch interessante Kino- und Fernsehangebote. "Napola", "Die Päpstin", "Der Turm" oder die erfolgreichen Dreiteiler „Ku’damm 56/59/63 Zusatzzahl 77“, aber die wird gerade noch fertig produziert. Bis dahin kann man ab 29. Mai Claudia Michelsen im Film "Blindgänger" im Kino sehen.

The wild, funny, multi-layered movie follows a young production assistant, Angela (the incredible Ilinca Manolache), on her endless days working in Bucharest, Romania. Jude creates a crazy quilt that captures what it's like to get through the world today, folding in Angela's hilariously foulmouthed Instagram videos and weaving in clips from a Communist-era 1981 film about a female taxi driver. Nina Hoss and Uwe Boll also have memorable roles.
