This week on the Tough Girl Podcast, we welcome Emma Wilkinson—a freelance health journalist, ultra runner, mother of three, and co-author of the empowering book Ultra Women: The Trailblazers Defying Sexism in Sport. Emma's journey into ultra running didn't begin until her 40s, but once she discovered the joy of going long and slow, there was no turning back. In this honest and motivating conversation, Emma shares how she went from half marathons and road running to self-created 100K adventures in the mountains of Snowdonia. Alongside fellow runner and friend Lily Canter, she set out to research and write Ultra Women, a book that celebrates female endurance athletes and dives into the science, stories, and social constructs around women in ultra sport. Emma talks openly about what inspired the book, how she balanced full-time work, parenting, and running while writing it, and what she learned about the unique strengths women bring to endurance challenges—especially around fatigue resistance, pain management, and mental toughness. If you've ever doubted your capabilities, struggled with self-identifying as a “runner,” or wondered if your body was made for ultras—this episode is for you. Emma's message is simple and powerful: don't put limits on yourself—just give it a go. New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! This week on the Tough Girl Podcast, we're joined by Lily Canter—an ultra runner, women's running coach, journalist, and passionate advocate for gender equality in sport. As co-author of the groundbreaking book Ultra Women, Lily is helping to challenge outdated narratives and spotlight the women redefining endurance running. Lily didn't grow up considering herself sporty, but after joining a triathlon club in her 30s, she discovered a love for running that quickly evolved into a passion for ultras. What began as a spontaneous 30-mile run turned into a deeper journey into the ultra world—culminating in a 250km multi-day race across Tanzania and a growing commitment to empowering more women through education, coaching, and research. In this episode, Lily opens up about the gaps she saw in female-specific training information, how she and co-author Emma Wilkinson tackled the research for their book, and why visibility, representation, and equity matter—on the trails and in the media. From coaching to kit, sports bras to science, Lily shares what still needs to change and how she's pushing those boundaries herself. Whether you're curious about tackling your first ultra or passionate about equity in endurance sports, this episode offers practical insight and powerful inspiration. Emotions and trauma don't just affect your mood—they imprint on your facial muscles. Discover how reactivating natural expression can reverse visible aging and restore emotional vitality. True radiance isn't about erasing lines—it's about restoring energy, expression, and self-connection. Cathy shares how women can age with power, not pressure. In this powerful episode of the Tough Girl Podcast, we meet Tia Banks—a former professional basketball player turned mountaineer and certified resilience expert. Based in Texas, Tia is on a bold mission to climb all seven volcanic summits, one on each continent, using her journey as a platform to inspire strength, courage, and mental resilience. Her love for adventure began with Mount Kilimanjaro in 2021, where she faced illness, doubt, and the ultimate test of her mindset on summit night. But for Tia, mountaineering is more than reaching the top—it's about how we speak to ourselves in tough moments, how we dig deep when we want to give up, and how we “climb our own mountains” in life. In this episode, Tia opens up about her early years in sport, the “suck it up” mentality, the importance of positive self-talk, and her commitment to empowering young people through adventure therapy and her non-profit initiative, Summit Saturday. If you're looking for a dose of motivation to keep pushing through your own challenges—or to finally try something you've never dared before—Tia's story will light the fire. I can't quite believe it, but here we are — the 800th episode of the Tough Girl Podcast! In this special solo episode, I'm taking you behind the scenes for a personal catch-up and reflection on everything that's happened so far in 2025 — from January through to August. I talk about what life has looked like lately (yes, still living at home with my parents!), working part-time at AIM Health, the adventures I've been on, the challenges I've faced, and the exciting things coming up next. This episode is a bit of everything: gear chat (flat-lay photos and a new Atom Pack!), health updates (peri-menopause, gut health, strength training, and more), financial planning (Patreon, pensions, broken laptops!), plus reflections on my time walking the English Camino, Snowdonia Slate Trail, and tackling the GR20 in Corsica — which was honestly tougher than the Marathon des Sables. I'm also talking about my motivations for taking on the GR10, what I've learned in 10 years of podcasting, and why the mission — to increase the amount of female role models in the media especially in relation to adventure and physical challenges— is stronger than ever. Thank you for being here with me on this journey. Whether you've listened from the start or are just finding the show now, I'm so incredibly grateful. This is a celebration of us — of consistency, resilience, growth, and dreaming big.
In this episode of the Tough Girl Podcast, we're joined by Sharon Evans, also known as the Free Wheeling Kiwi—a 58-year-old adventurer, storyteller, and passionate advocate for women embracing the outdoors, especially later in life. Sharon shares the incredible story of walking the full Te Araroa Trail, a 3,000km thru-hike stretching the length of New Zealand. Alongside her partner, she tackled harsh weather, blisters, foot pain, and relentless terrain—proving that age is no barrier to adventure. Five years ago, Sharon made the bold decision to walk away from her rural real estate career and pursue a life filled with purpose, exploration, and connection to nature. In this conversation, we explore her motivations, the magical (and muddy) moments on the trail, and her mission to empower women over 50 to step into the wild with confidence. Sharon also shares practical tips for low-cost adventuring, content creation on the go, and how she's continuing her journey by heading to Australia's rugged Larapinta Trail next. If you're looking for inspiration to follow your passion—no matter your age—this episode is for you. *** New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! PUSH YOURSELF, MAKE IT HAPPEN is a wake-up call to the power of a single decision. In this episode, Eddie Pinero reminds us that we are always one choice away from a completely different life. Change doesn't require perfection, clarity, or permission, it requires courage. It's easy to wait, to delay, to tell yourself “one day,” but everything shifts the moment you decide to act. This is your reminder that progress starts with a single step, and momentum builds when you keep showing up. Don't wait for the right time. Push yourself. Make it happen. Your next chapter is waiting.More from Eddie Pinero:Monday Motivation Newsletter: https://www.eddiepinero.com/newsletterYour World Within Podcast: https://yourworldwithin.libsyn.com/Stream these tracks on Spotify - https://spoti.fi/2BLf6pBInstagram - @your_world_within and @IamEddiePineroTikTok - your_world_withinFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/YourworldwithinTwitter - https://www.twitter.com/IamEddiePineroBusiness Inquiries - http://www.yourworldwithin.com/contact

Tribute podcast to the legendary coach John Wooden. In the spirit of studying the Masters... this podcast is both a tribute and a structure for coaching excellence in both sport and business. John Robert Wooden was an American basketball coach and player. Nicknamed "the Wizard of Westwood", he won ten National Collegiate Athletic Association national championships in a 12-year period as head coach for the UCLA Bruins, including a record seven in a row. Song Title: “The Pyramid of Success” (Inspired by John Wooden's Philosophy of Coaching) Verse 1 He never talked of winning, never chased the fame, But his teams lit the fire, and they changed the game. Ten banners hanging, but he'd always say, “It's giving your best that will show you the way.” Not the score, not the crowd, not the glory above, But the work, and the trust, and the game played with love. Chorus Build your life like a pyramid, brick by brick, Hard work and heart, that's the magic trick. Friendship and loyalty, spirit that won't rest, If you've done your very best, you've already passed the test. It's not about winning, but how you give your all, Stand tall, be true, and you'll never fall. Verse 2 Industrious hands, and a fire in your soul, Enthusiasm lifts you, and makes the dream whole. With self-control steady, and eyes wide awake, Alert to each moment, each choice that you make. Initiative calls — don't wait, take the shot, Intentness will carry you through what you're not. Verse 3 (New Verse – Wooden's Motto & Definition) “Make each day your masterpiece,” the coach would say, “Success is peace of mind you find along the way. It's knowing deep inside, when the game is through, You became the best that you're capable to.” Not chasing applause, not fear of defeat, But the quiet pride of a job complete. Bridge Condition your mind, your body, your heart, Skill is the art where mastery starts. Team spirit's the soul — we all rise as one, When the battle gets tough, that's where greatness is won. Poise under pressure, and confidence deep, Competitive greatness — that's the climb you keep. Final Chorus Build your life like a pyramid, brick by brick, With faith and with grit, you'll make each moment stick. It's not about trophies, but the life that you live, The lessons you learn, the love that you give. Coach Wooden knew the truth, and he taught it well: Your best is the story that only you can tell. Outro So here's to the coach who showed us the way, That the score means nothing if your heart didn't play. Live with courage, with kindness, with success in your chest, For the only true victory… is giving your best.
In this week's episode of the podcast, I'm diving into one of the most overlooked (but most essential!) priorities for sustainable work-life balance: me time. If you've ever said, “I don't even know what I'd do with time to myself,” this episode is for you. I'm breaking down why taking time just for you isn't selfish or indulgent—it's necessary. I share real stories from working moms who pushed past guilt, redefined what fills them up, and started living more joyfully. And I offer the mindset shifts and tools to help you do the same. Topics in this episode:Why me time is not optional—it's foundational to balance What real "me time" looks like (and what it isn't) How cultural messages push moms to de-prioritize themselves The guilt working moms feel—and how to move past it Real stories of women choosing joy over efficiency Show Notes & References:You can watch this episode on YouTube! In this episode of the Tough Girl Podcast, we're joined by Christine Reed—an American long-distance backpacker and award-winning author—whose life changed when she took her first steps on the Appalachian Trail in 2015. With no prior backpacking experience, Christine dove headfirst into the unknown, seeking healing, purpose, and a sense of identity. Since then, Christine has hiked thousands of miles, lived out of a van, and carved a creative path through storytelling. Her debut memoir, Alone in Wonderland, captured her raw and powerful journey of self-discovery, while her latest anthology Blood Sweat Tears amplifies the voices of women+ on trail—sharing unfiltered stories about periods, pain, perseverance, and everything in between. We talk about grief, growth, writing through discomfort, and the courage it takes to follow your passions even when they feel far outside your comfort zone. Christine's story reminds us that you don't have to be outdoorsy, athletic, or fearless to start—you just have to begin. *** New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! About Corrine Auman, PhD: Corinne Auman is the founder of Choice Care Navigators, a company dedicated to helping families navigate the aging process. She is dedicated to fostering personal growth, resilience, and authentic living at every age. Corinne's passion lies in reshaping how we perceive older adulthood, a vision she beautifully encapsulates in her groundbreaking book, "Keenagers." Corinne is on a mission to change the conversation around aging. In a culture where many avoid thinking about older adulthood until the last minute, she urges us to embrace aging in a positive light. Her story is not just about her successes; it's a call for all of us to care about aging, dispelling myths and embracing the beauty and potential of every stage of life. What We Discuss In This Episode: Corrine discussed the complexities of aging and the societal perceptions surrounding it. She emphasized the importance of a positive outlook on aging, arguing that it can empower families to plan effectively for their older loved ones, contrasting this with the panic often induced by negative cultural messages. We also addressed the challenges faced by caregivers, many of whom are older adults themselves. Corinne discussed the importance of self-care for caregivers and the need for expert guidance in navigating senior health care complexities. She provided insights on when families should consider transitioning elderly parents to senior living communities, advising preliminary research to ease the decision-making process during health crises. Corinne addressed the modern perspective on retirement, noting that individuals in their 40s, 50s, and 60s are rethinking what it means to retire. Corinne pointed out that there are no longer mandatory retirement ages, allowing people to continue working while collecting social security. Many choose to transition from their first careers to new ventures, such as consulting or starting businesses. We discussed the appropriate time for families to seek senior living communities for elderly parents. Corinne Auman detailed the spectrum of senior living options, from independent living to skilled nursing, highlighting the differences in care and support provided. She stressed the importance of researching these options in advance to alleviate stress during potential health crises. Corinne highlighted the unique stressors faced by adult caregivers and recommended seeking specialized therapy services. She detailed the differences between home care, which involves assistance with daily tasks, and home health, which includes medical therapies ordered by a doctor. Auman also noted that costs for these services can vary significantly by location and often require private payment. “Body work, brain work, and world work - all longevity habits fit into those three categories.” -Allison Davis When author and naturopath Allison Davis turned 60, she didn't accept it as the “gateway to old age”—she saw it as a turning point. Our hosts, Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines, talk with Allison about her transformative journey and her new book, Sixty Is a Good Start: A Powerful Body, A Purposeful Life, and a Plan to Make It Happen. Allison recounts a yearlong period of reflection that led to saying “yes” to new challenges, most notably, the intense 75 Hard program. But her real insight lies in making change sustainable through what she calls the “self-perpetuating circle of purpose”: small, habit-based practices in three categories—Body Work, Brain Work, and World Work. Drawing on research from Blue Zones and longevity science, she outlines a holistic strategy grounded in baby steps, accountability, and environment. Whether it's putting fruit at eye level in the fridge or walking with a group of friends every (or nearly every) morning, Allison makes the case that aging well isn't about an overhaul, but intention. Allison's ultimate goal is to help us reimagine our next chapter—not as a slow fade, but as a season of vitality, purpose, and community. Key Topics: Allison's Turning Point at age 60 (03:12) The Power of Saying Yes and the Misogi Method (05:42) Completing 75 Hard and the Role of Community (07:37) Introducing the Body/Brain/World Framework (15:34) Blue Zones, Longevity, and Daily Habits (17:21) How Environment Shapes Behavior (20:07) The Power of Baby Steps and Planning (21:36) Optimism, Accountability, and Positive Aging (29:48) Key Takeaways (35:25) Resources: Sixty Is a Good Start: A Powerful Body, A Purposeful Life, and a Plan to Make It Happen (book) Allison McCune Davis Website + Link to the 60-Day Dare If you like what you've been hearing, we invite you to subscribe on your favorite platform and leave us a review. What We Discuss In This Episode: Lynne Wadsworth and VJ Hamilton engaged in a discussion about health issues related to midlife, focusing on skin and hair health during menopause, as well as autoimmune disorders. Lynne shared her personal experiences with alopecia and migraines, linking her health challenges to her environment in Florida, while VJ highlighted the connection between skin health and the immune system, emphasizing the impact of diet and climate. VJ recommended dietary changes, such as incorporating omega-3-rich fish and antioxidant-rich foods to reduce inflammation and stressed the importance of high-quality food sources. VJ also explained gut health's role in autoimmune conditions, and how gut bacteria imbalances can lead to inflammation and digestive issues. She advised including a variety of plant-based foods and fiber in the diet, particularly for those on restrictive diets, and encouraged manageable dietary changes. We discussed health challenges faced during midlife, particularly focusing on skin issues and autoimmune conditions. VJ recounted her experiences with autoimmune diseases and how they motivated her to pursue a career in nutrition. She highlighted the significance of anti-inflammatory foods, particularly omega-3-rich fish, in managing symptoms and maintaining overall health during midlife. Health and Nutrition Insights - VJ explained that gut health is central to managing autoimmune conditions and overall health, as it affects nutrient absorption and immune response. She noted that an imbalance in gut bacteria can lead to inflammation and digestive issues. Stress management and dietary choices, such as incorporating short-chain fatty acids and a variety of plant-based foods, are essential for maintaining gut health. VJ also mentioned the significance of fiber for gut health and highlighted the need for conscious dietary choices, especially for those on low starch or low grain diets. She recommended starting with small lifestyle changes that bring joy and suggested focusing on one nutritional improvement at a time, such as cooking whole food instead of relying on ready meals.
