Beacon memorial opened in 1924 after close vote During World War II, 1,704 Beacon residents, about 14 percent of the population, served in the Armed Forces. At least 67 men died, and many survivors suffered physical and mental disabilities. Now, Vietnam vets are the old-timers at the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts inside the Veterans Memorial Building at the intersection of Main and Teller. This year marks the structure's centennial. Beacon built the edifice for the VFW and the Legion after a referendum authorized the city to spend $60,000 (about $1.1 million today) by a 317-310 margin, according to the Beacon Historical Society. American City magazine claimed it to be the nation's most expensive war memorial at the time. Residents packed the plaza for the opening on Memorial Day in 1924. That same year, the Elks christened its lodge and the U.S. government opened the Castle Point VA Medical Center to treat tuberculosis patients. Beacon donated the Memorial Building to the Legion and VFW; for the veterans, the only overhead is maintenance and repairs. The organizations derive a good chunk of revenue by renting out the hall. "You won't see many arrangements like this - we're a rare bird," says Harold Delamater, commander of the Private William B. Wilson Post 666 of the VFW, named for the first city resident to die in World War I. Delamater, the man with the keys, is a retired police officer who served in Vietnam. "Beacon has always taken care of its veterans; it's just been like that," he says. He says that Beacon battled the vets in the late 1990s to move its detective bureau into the building. For a while, officers occupied the second floor. The metal rings to which they handcuffed detainees still dangle from the wall. Some rooms are museum-like, with artifacts scattered about, such as a book of meeting minutes from the 1880s for the Grand Army of the Republic, the nation's first large-scale veterans' organization, created by Union soldiers and sailors after the Civil War. The local post met at what is now the Howland Cultural Center. Thanks to a grant from Dutchess County, the Memorial Building is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The plaza, which includes three monuments to fallen combatants, looks spiffy and the abundant vegetation is cared for. In addition to the Legion (85 members) and the VFW (53), the Marine Corps League (62) and the Nam Knights Motorcycle Club (15) also gather there. Two years ago, Guardian Revival, a mental health organization geared toward Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan war vets, moved into the building, fixing up the attic and turning a moribund room into an office. In addition to hosting Tuesday night jam sessions, Guardian Revival lends dogs to veterans, offers peer support and takes first responders on outdoor adventures. Of course, there's a bar, behind an unmarked door. Though the serving area could have been teleported from the 1960s, the modern kitchen shines. Beer fills the refrigerator and fuels stories. "Between us and Guardian Revival, it's a completely different way of coping," says Delamater. "They don't come down and have a couple of beers with the old guys. Each generation handles it their own way."

Dan Payne stopped by the studio to discuss the Marine Corps League Detachment 14 K9 Awards. wo members of progressive group "the Squad" were the only Democrats to vote against a resolution that memorialized police officers killed in the line of duty and expressed condolences to their loved ones. During a vote Monday recognizing National Police Week, Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Cori Bush, D-Mo., uttered the only nays heard from the House floor as the chamber voted on the pro-law enforcement resolution. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida defended ex-Marine Daniel Penny as having done the "right thing" after he fatally choked Jordan Neely on a New York City Subway. DeSantis shared a fundraising page for Penny over the weekend, raising $2 million for his defense. "Vets look out for other vets," DeSantis said when asked about it Tuesday. DeSantis has been among the Republicans attacking Democrats over rising crime.  A teacher and author argues that schools should provide “lessons in bromance” to help focus on the mental-health crisis among boys. Matt Pinkett, an English teacher who challenges champions of “toxic masculinity,” believes that teenage boys should be exposed to good models for a “bromance” with close, strong, male friendships through characters such as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 33 is a unique podcast in that our main interviewee is a unique individual. Mike represents the transition from Viet Nam to Stateside. Mike has experienced the strong need to get to Viet Nam to fight with his comrades-in-arms and the disappointment of being denied that opportunity. And the experiences Mike has since his time in the Corps is also relatively unique in that he has stayed in very close contact with the Marine Corps through the Marine Corps League. In the city in which he resides he has had opportunities that are rare even for non-military persons. For example, he has been in close contact with such noteworthy people as George Schultz, former Secretary of State, Dianne Feinstein, current California US Senator, and Jackie Speier, current US Congresswoman. One of my LinkedIn friends announced she has breast cancer. I pray that she recovers. My dad has got through stage 4 prostate cancer. So far he is doing well. One of my Marine Corps League friends Fran Beckstead passed away from cancer a while ago. She had been heroically fighting cancer for over a year. The doctors found a basketball sized lump after she had been through a couple of bouts with chemo. Her life has no more tomorrows, What would you be like if you knew you had no more tomorrows coming? How would you show up differently if you knew you had a short time to live? Would you live differently if death was looming in the next week or month? If the reckoning were here for you would you spend the last day at work? Would you feel ready to leave? I think one of the things that sets people apart is the actions they take despite what is happening to them. Fran is one of my Hero's, It was awe inspiring to watch as she would get chemo in the morning then go and volunteer with one of the four or five nonprofits she would serve in the afternoon. No matter how sick she felt, she was out serving others. It wasn't until she was put in the hospital the last few days of her life that she was unable to go and serve others. There are today a number of movements focusing on thinking about the fact that we will die several times a day. The thought behind this belief is that we come closer to our values and consider what is truly important to us when we think about our death. Why is it that we can't think about these without our death being right in front of us? What will be the celebration when I leave? I know I will be missed but what else will be said? How many people will it affect? Will others be able to know what my values were by the action they saw me take? Will I have accomplished what I want to by the time I leave? Our culture is one that denies and mystifies death. Even if your death is 50 years off, how fast can 50 years go by? How fast did 2020 go by? What if by denying our mortality we are doing ourselves a giant disservice? 5 things that thinking about death can give us Motivation Don't sweat the small stuff (so much of life is small stuff) Be present (mindful) Reduce anxiety over death Find meaning and live intentionally Maybe you have been waiting to do what you want to do. Do you have a bucket list? How many of the things on the list have you done? Some people wait to serve others because they don't have the time or money. How often have you waited to go do something until you feel well? Did you ever get it done? While you wait, life races by. At some point life will pass you and at that time there will be no more chances to do the things that you said you would. My goal is to get you my friend to do one or more of the things that you want to do that you haven't done for whatever reason. Go to the Facebook group page and tell me about what you are here to do and what is on your bucket list. That way I can help you get those things done. My first guest on the Tami Jackson Show* tonight will be Paul Broun. After graduating from the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia, Paul Broun devoted nearly four decades to serving others through the practice of medicine. Dr. Broun is passionate about the medical profession and enjoys helping patients whether as a family physician, in emergency medicine, or in the military. Several years before his election to Congress in 2007, to convenience his patients, Dr. Broun developed a practice based upon a style that is almost unique in modern times – one devoted entirely to house calls. At age 18, he volunteered to serve our nation as a U.S. Marine. He was later commissioned as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy. After his election to Congress, Dr. Broun continued to practice medicine in his role as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy Reserves and was promoted from Lt. Commander to Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves. In 2012, Paul was deployed to Afghanistan where he treated sick and injured Marines and soldiers. As a military doctor he treated patients in the Navy Health Clinic at Marine Base Quantico and at the Brigade Medical Center at the U.S. Naval Academy. He was honorably discharged in 2014. Dr. Broun is deeply devoted to quality medical care for our Wounded Warriors and Veterans here at home. Paul and Niki Broun have been married since 1985. Dr. Broun has three adult children, Lucy, Carly and Collins. He has two grandchildren, Tillman and Lucile. The Brouns are members of Prince Avenue Baptist. He is a member of the American Legion, VFW, Military Order of World Wars, MOAA, the Marine Corps League, Navy League, and the Reserve Officers Association. An avid sportsman and hunter, Dr. Broun is a Life Member of both the NRA and Gun Owners of America. He is past president of the Georgia Sports Shooters Association and the Georgia Wildlife Federation. His is a former vice president of Safari Club International and is a Life Member of Quail Unlimited, Trout Unlimited and the Federation of Fly Fisherman. Dr. Broun is a strong constitutional conservative and served in Congress from 2007 - 2015. Listen in as Dr. Broun and I talk about several topics, including evolution! ************************** My guest in the second half hour will be Eric Seligman. Erik Seligman is an engineer living in Hillsboro, Oregon, with his wife and 6th-grade daughter. Seligman attended Carnegie Mellon University and Princeton University, and is a formal verification architect at Intel. He served from 2013-2017 on the board of the Hillsboro School District, the 4th largest k-12. district in Oregon. He has hosted a “fun math” podcast called "Math Mutation" for over 10 years, and written two books on non-politics topics. This year, he and local businessman Manuel Castaneda just launched a new podcast, "Stories of Communism." Erik's from my neck of the woods, did some good on the school board, and entertains via Math...crazy!
