Bill Whelan was NOT expecting to get a call from Michael Flatley during our conversation for this week's episode. But despite the fact that they haven't always seen eye to eye, it all seemed to go pretty well. The two men of course worked together on Riverdance – Bill composed the iconic score, and Flatley was his lead dancer, along with Jean Butler. Arguably, it was a piece of music and dance that helped changed the face and perception of Ireland forever. Bill has just published his memoirs – The Road to Riverdance – and he gives me so many fascinating behind-the-scenes stories from its creation and success, including revealing the inspiration for the music's unique time signatures which still compel me to this day. But its not all about Riverdance. Bill has written and produced music for all the greats, including U2, Kate Bush and Van Morrison. In this conversation, which I loved every minute of, he shares so many stories from a career working at the highest levels of the music industry. COMEDY: Ronan O'Gara is on the shortlist for the job of England team Head Coach - this has caused quite a stir - we get exclusive access to his voicemails.. Megan Gates (ASIJ 1987) (Former ISSH & YIS) Lawyer Megan is a partner at a law firm based in Boston, Massachusetts called Mintz (short for Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C.) She has been a practicing corporate and securities lawyer for 26 years, 20 of which have been at Mintz. She primarily represents publicly traded companies on equity financings, strategic mergers and acquisitions, and compliance and corporate governance obligations. Most of her clients are in the biotechnology or life sciences industry. When she's not practicing law, she's passionate about travel and serving on non-profit boards. She's currently on the boards of directors of the Japan Society of Boston, Greater Boston Legal Services, Lawyers for Civil Rights, and the Pine Street Inn, which is Boston's largest homeless services organization. Megan graduated from ASIJ in 1987, where she spent the last three years of high school. She also attended Yokohama International School from 1974-1977 and ISSH in Tokyo from 1977 – 1980. In between her years in Japan she lived in Houston, Texas. She received her undergraduate degree in Japanese Studies from Wellesley College and her law degree from Boston College Law School. Megan lives in the South End of Boston with her husband, Bill Whelan, and their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Angus. Whenever she's able to do so, she also spends time at their condo in Azabudai, Tokyo. Episode 29 Megan Gates (ASIJ 1987) (Former ISSH & YIS) Lawyer Megan explains to Nick about how ASIJ has changed in comparison to when she attended in the 1980s. Megan speaks to Nick about SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002) and Mergers & Acquisitions, and how oversight in regards to company accounting governance has evolved since the early 2000s to the current day, including the events which transpired following the 2008 financial crisis (Such as the passing of the Dodd-Frank Act). The two discuss how much industry-based knowledge is needed by lawyers when consulting specific companies, and Nick gets jealous when hearing about the time Megan worked with a company that dealt with European soccer. Megan explains to Nick about how woman in law has changed and evolved the past two decades, and how companies like Mintz do an especially excellent job when it comes to the advancement of woman. Megan explains to Nick how the issue remains as "retention of woman", where law school graduates remain relatively close to 50/50, but this balance begins to drop as female lawyers become more senior. The podcast concludes with the two discussing being a TCK, and their comparative experiences of living in Japan vs the USA.

SHANE HENNESSY is a virtuoso guitarist, composer, and songwriter from Ireland. Known for his unique virtuosic approach to the acoustic guitar, his musical style has won praise from musical giants Nile Rodgers of CHIC and guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel, with whom Shane has shared the stage. At the young age of twenty-five, Shane has sold out a solo concert in the National Concert Hall, released two highly praised albums, has worked with Bill Whelan (composer of Riverdance) and has done extensive international touring across Europe, The United States, and Russia. Shane will be premiering material from new album set for release in June. AL, ALICE & RUTH bring new life to old music, and make new music sound vintage. This trio has a musical history that is enviable. Alice and Ruth are sisters, growing up in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, performing nationally and internationally with their family, The McLain Family Band. Al grew up in New Mexico, from a long line of family musicians, performing in the west, before heading east to join the Bluegrass Alliance, and then (after marrying Alice) joining the McLain Family Band. The trio has released several projects on their own and toured. WoodSongs Kid: Ben Kennington is a Young Thumb guitar picker from Middleton, Florida.

Bloody May: Will o’Wisp, Red Cap and Sluagh.Faerie of traditional Celtic Faerie Folklore are old and clever, and sometimes bloodthirsty. It is long known the Good People are more active in the month of May. Until they tell us themselves, we can only speculate why this is so but… we are wise to be wary, for not all Faerie wish to act as Guardian, or Muse, or kindly foretell a death at any time. And in the month of May, there are those who would gladly steal your blood or even your life.We look at 2 tales of encounters with Faerie in the month of May which show us how easily they are tempted by a lovely lady and how swift, and final, is their reckoning when a promise is broken. The line twixt life and death is fine indeed… This episode features 3 particularly dangerous Faerie: the Will o’Wisp, Red Cap and Sluagh. These are three fellas you do not want to bump into at any time, but in the month of May, that bump would surely turn deadly. But fear not, we have some tips on how you might save yourself from their wicked whimsies.Kitty reminds you not to be tempted to go Faerie Spotting in the month of May and as always, explains why it’s okay to believe in Faeries. To read more stories of encounters with the Good People, share your own story of an encounter, perhaps one handed down through your family, or just an unusual experience visit:www.encounterswiththegoodpeople.comglassonionstories@gmail.comwww.facebook.com/encounterswiththegoodpeopleCredits:Theme Music: ‘Irish Coffee’ by Giorgio Di CampoAdditional Music: ‘Caoineadh Cu Chulainn’ written by Bill Whelan from the album ‘Riverdance’, 1997. The Next Step: The Evolution of Irish Dancing in America

Every immigrant group that travels to a new country brings with it more than the clothes on their backs or the personal belongings in their suitcases. They bring with them the customs and culture of their race, community, and nation. The Irish are no different. Arriving to the North American continent and the Caribbean as early as the 1600s the Irish brought a lively culture that included their unique facility with words, the gift of story-telling, and a love for music and dance. Four hundred years and seven million migrants later, the influence of Irish culture is still felt in America. In particular, the popularity of Irish dance is stronger than ever among Irish-, and non-Irish, Americans alike. For generations, Irish dancing remained a local pursuit, enjoyed recreationally among the Irish and Irish- American communities that developed across America. With the Gaelic Revival in the late nineteenth century, dance instruction became more formalized and dance competitions emerged to promote and also preserve the integrity of the art form. Irish dance is perhaps alone among the cultural imports that remained closely tied to the home country because the dance masters in Ireland remained the final authority on steps, style, and choreography. To win a dance competition in Ireland was to be judged among the elite Irish dancers in the world. By the end of the twentieth century, young Irish-American dancers like Jean Butler and Michael Flatley were among the elite Irish dancers who were proficient in the art form, but also seasoned performers. When they appeared in the seven-minute Interval Act of the Eurovision talent contest on Ireland’s RTE television network in 1994 called Riverdance, they thrilled Irish and European viewers with their dynamic choreography and Bill Whelan’s fresh musical score. Riverdance became an international phenomenon and pushed what had been a parochial pastime to a level of popularity that broke ethnic barriers and created commercial and artistic opportunities for artists, teachers, choreographers, costumers, and producers alike. It was the perfect marriage of Irish art and American showmanship. On Sunday, June 17, 2012, at Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts in Vienna, VA, the North American touring production of Riverdance will play its final performance sixteen years after it opened in New York in March 1996. The legacy of Riverdance is incalculable. Like the millions of immigrants who left the tiny island in the middle of the North Atlantic for the new world, it has carried Irish culture to new lands, bringing recognition back to the homeland and joy to performers and audiences.
