We asked our listeners to submit their favourite field recordings and tell us the stories behind how they were captured, and we got some really great submissions. These stories prove that sound design is not for the weak of heart, as people are mauled by dogs or accidentally lit on fire. Other stories are tales of pure luck, by being in the right place at the right time. Listen to these adventures in sound submitted by Brad Nayman, Mark Mangini, Katrine Amsler, Ken Cain, Florian Abou Yehia, Jak Melvin, Frank Colburn, David W. Mika and David Thomas. Have you ever been watching a stand-up comedy special and felt like you were in the room the day it was recorded? A lot of that energy relies on the sound of the crowd as they laugh and react to what the performer is doing on stage. Vinny Alfano has worked on the audio post-production on stand-up specials from Mike Birbiglia, Sarah Silverman, Iliza Shlesinger, Louis C.K, David A. Arnold and more. He talks us through how to translate that energy from the live performance to the screen by making crowd reactions immersive, and the performer crisp and clear. Also.... Attention Sound Designers and Mic Lovers! The Field Recording Slack is currently running a MACHINE themed crowdsource library. Whether you're just getting started or already sleep with a mic under your pillow, your sounds are needed! There are some serious prizes up for grabs from Pole Position, Aftertouch Audio, Penguin Grenade, Tonsturm, Sonorous Objects, Articulated Sounds, Thomas Rex Beverly, Shaping Waves, Axl Sound, Western Tiger, JSE, Surround Sound Lab and more. Mark Mangini and Ezra Dweck will choose the winning sounds after the June 30th deadline. Today marks the opening weekend for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a prequel for the character first introduced in MadMax: Fury Road. So it seemed like a perfect time to reach into our archives and go back to May of 2015, when we did an episode with Oliver Machin about his work on Fury Road. Hear his amazing story of how the sounds of the vehicles used in the film, were recorded in the African desert days before they were destroyed in principle photography. It is one of my all time favourite Tonebenders episodes. As a bonus, Mark Mangini makes a short appearance discussing how important these recordings were to the final soundscape of the film. Make sure to go to our website to this episode's homepage (link below) to see dozens of fascinating pictures of Oliver recording the vehicles. The hushed thrum of the womb. The warble of the last living species of a now-extinct bird. The fury and thrust of a jet engine in flight. These are some of the sounds that populate filmmaker Sam Green's immersive documentary “32 Sounds.” The movie is not just a collection of sounds, but rather a meditation on the strange power that sound has on us, whether it is voices, music, the natural world or sounds that we are trying to tune out. Watching the movie, even on a tiny screen, can be a full-body experience in which you're encouraged by Green, who narrates the film, to feel the sound. We'll talk to Green and his Oscar-winning sound designer, Mark Mangini, about how sound can literally move us. 32 Sounds will be screened at the Exploratorium on July 27, at the Smith Rafael Film Center July 28-30, the San Francisco Roxie Theater, July 29 and Berkeley's Rialto Theater, July 30. Director Ryan White and Academy Award-winning sound designer Mark Mangini join us today to discuss the making of “Good Night Oppy.” This charming new documentary tells the story of the two Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, which were sent to the red planet back in 2003 and were expected to survive long enough to collect data for — hopefully — 90 days. Instead, they blew everyone's expectations away and one of them, nicknamed “Oppy,” lasted over 15 years. The filmmakers had the advantage of almost a thousand hours of archival material from NASA, but since much of the film takes place “on Mars,” that came with its own unique challenges.“I didn't want it just to be an earthbound story. I wanted it to also take place on Mars. And I didn't want that just to be like grainy black and white photos. And so I asked [our production company] Amblin, ‘is it possible to put the audience on Mars, almost as if I could be there with my documentary crew during this adventure, in a way that is photoreal?' And Amblin said, ‘we don't know, but luckily our best friends are Industrial Light and Magic.” … Spirit and opportunity each had nine cameras. We know what every day of their journeys looked like. And so we were able to supply all of that photography and all of the data that NASA could give us. So for instance, the weather, where the sun rose and sun set on a day, or how much dust was in the air on a certain day that Spirit was going through. And we asked Industrial Light and Magic, ‘can you take all of this information, all of this data, and create a photoreal Mars?' And they said, ‘we've never done that before, but we love a challenge. We will build Mars from the ground up for you.'”— Ryan White, Director, “Good Night Oppy”Mark Mangini, who worked as the film's sound designer, supervising sound editor, and re-recording mixer, then had the unique challenge of “recreating” what exactly those machines and environment might have sounded like on Mars… but without the benefit of microphones on any of the rovers. But as always, he was able to craft an incredible soundtrack and mix in Dolby Atmos®.Be sure to check out “Good Night Oppy,” now streaming on Prime Video in Dolby Atmos®.Please subscribe to The Dolby Institute Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. For this episode, number 37, November 2021, I have a real treat. You will not have failed to notice that Denis Villeneuve's Dune has finally arrived. Back on episode 16 interview sound designer Mark Mangini about his career and his work on Blade Runner 2049. We stayed in touch and I asked if he'd be willing to come back to talk about his new work on Dune. He then introduced me to his colleague Theo Green, also a sound designer and we set a date to talk all this Dune. So this is the first time I've done a podcast about a new movie and I got quite a buzz. So i'll be doing this from time to time.Just so you know, Mark is the American voice, Theo is the British voice. We did have some technical difficulties at the beginning, which I've left in, because if I cut it out it wouldn't make much sense as we refer back to it a couple of times later on in the conversation. And you know, this is a warts and all kind of podcast. So you'll hear Theo's young family in the background at times, but that's all part of the rich aural tapestry of this sound design episode.Huge thanks to Mark and Theo as well as Emilie Erskine of Erskine PR who organised the interview and was able to provide me with those wonderful sound clips from Dune (2021).Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/jamiebenning)

The incredible new adaptation of "Dune," from director Denis Villeneuve, has some astonishing sound work, fully embracing the immersive capabilities of Dolby Atmos®. Creating this soundtrack was a long and painstaking process, which began in pre-production, as Denis took a novel approach by bringing his sound team and composer on board very early in the process. This gave them extra time and creative freedom to unlock some truly next-level artistry on this film. We recently sat down with Denis and his all-star sound team of Mark Mangini, Theo Green, and Ron Bartlett, to discuss this and their approach to this very ambitious project. "[A]t the end of the day, you're not mixing sound, you're mixing an image. It's storytelling. And everything that pulls you away from the screen is bad for me. But with the sound of Atmos, what I like is that I just have the impression that I'm diving INTO the image." — Denis Villeneuve, Director, "Dune" In the US, https://www.dunemovie.com/ ("Dune" is available to watch in a Dolby Cinema near you and on HBO Max). EPISODE 157- MARK MANGINI- Sound Designer Team Deakins converses with sound designer Mark Mangini (DUNE, BLADE RUNNER 2049, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, STAR TREK) about the world of sound. In this episode, Mark explains that his job is to tell stories with sound and to create universes that sonically don't exist. He walks us through designing the sound for the war rig in MAD MAX: FURY ROAD as well as his close collaboration with director Denis Villeneuve on BLADE RUNNER 2049, and Tom Holkenborg on BLACK MASS. We discuss how Mark decides when to use a music cue or sound effect cue, how you can earn loud sounds by buying silence early on in a film, and the creative necessity and financial incentive to capture production sound on set instead of recreating it in post. We learn a lot in this episode!! You don't want to miss it! BONUS: Use this link to download a sound file that Mark makes reference to when speaking of "Bladerunner 2049".

And in the coming weeks and months, we will have even bigger episodes of the Dolby Institute podcast, including more deep dives into the careers of legendary sound artists and some explorations into a some new terrain for us. We are in the planning stages of our first-ever episodes about some very exciting new video game releases. As you may already know, there is some truly incredible sound work being done in that world, and we can't wait to explore it further with you. So stay tuned for all of that. Way back in January, the great Mark Mangini penned a little blog post outlining some audio tropes that he was hoping to put to rest. That post inspired some slack threads, facebook posts, and a good general discussion about how we can be more original and creative when tasked with designing sounds and situations that can have quick and easy answers. In this not-so-serious conversation Mark gets together with Tim, Teresa and René to break down some tropes, spell out some reasons for going there anyway, and maybe…just maybe…we retire the now infamous Wilhelm.

It's a true sonic experience this week on BEHIND THE LENS with Formosa Group's Oscar-winning sound editor MARK MANGINI live in-studio as we talk sound, sound and more sound; from creativity to technology and beyond! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
What could possibly justify two guest episodes in a row?? We are constantly opining that sound is one of the most important factors in creating the rich world of FURY ROAD, and if you don't agree with us already, you will by the end of this episode! We are lucky to have been able to discuss the process of working on MMFR and sonic storytelling with a master of his craft, Mark Mangini. Check his resume. From RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK to THE FIFTH ELEMENT, this guy's got both talent and stories. Not the least of which being the time he dropped an F-bomb at the Oscars this year. Oh, you didn't catch that? Listen on, Warboys and Wargirls... Yuri Lowenthal and Travis Sentell love MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. Almost as much as they love each other. Listen as they joyfully dissect the film 4 minutes at a time!
