In 1992, the Snedeker family appeared on the Sally Jessy Raphael show to share the horrors that resided inside their Southington, Connecticut home. This now infamous TV interview catapulted the already controversial family into every living room in America. The family moved into the former funeral parlour in 1986, and experienced such horrendous paranormal activity they turned to famed ghost hunter Ed and Lorrain Warren for help. Their story was so iconic and notorious that it was the subject of the 1992 book "In A Dark Place", as well as the inspiration for the 2009 movie "The Haunting In Connecticut", and endless TV shows, documentaries, and articles. However, as famous as the story is, it has never been told the same way twice. In this episode Ed and Lorraine's grandson, Chris shares with us, his firsthand account of working on the Snedeker case. You may think you know the story, but have you heard it told by someone who was actually there?

Why do you want a podcast? I'm pretty sure you don't want a podcast just to have a podcast. You want influence and authority. You want significance. SIGNIFICANCE AND COMPANIONSHIP It's not about what you're saying. It is about who you're being when you're saying it. Your significance comes from who you are, not what you say. Your listeners come for your content, but stay for you. When I coach clients, they often find it difficult to step into who they really are. They don't think people want to hear about their life or story. But, that's the furthest from the truth. People listen to you for companionship. Companionship is the primary reason people listen to audio. They don't want to be alone. People don't want to exercise alone, so they have their earbuds in. They don't want to drive alone, so they have audio on. Your fans don't want to be alone on a run, so they are listening to your podcast. You're keeping them company. MORE OF YOU On a coaching call the other day, my client said his former coach told him to cut out all of the personal stuff. Nobody wants to hear it. That advice couldn't be further from the truth. And it's detrimental to your podcast. Are your downloads struggling? There isn't enough of you. Your podcast cannot survive on content alone. Artificial intelligence can copy your information. It can probably generate your six steps to success faster than you can. I don't need to sit through 30 minute of your podcast. AI can't copy you and your story. Share yourself with your fans and stand out. Your fans want more of you. That little voice in your head is telling you that people may not like what you share. They may not like the real you. And that's ok. NOT FOR EVERYONE The biggest personalities are polarizing. But they didn't start that way. Oprah started as a typical news anchor. She went on to host a daytime television show that was just like her competitors Phil Donahue, Sally Jessy Raphael and the others. When Oprah finally decided to be herself, share her struggles and do it her way, her star shot to the top. However, she wasn't for everyone. But her superfans loved her. She had incredible significance that lives on today. Howard Stern started in radio doing the same schtick every other DJ was doing. He struggled to find success. One day Stern decided to do it his way and be himself. He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Even his program director was trying to hold him back. But, his fan base started to grow quickly. People loved him. And people hated him. He surely isn't for everyone. But the people who love him really love him. He became the biggest star on the radio, because he shared himself. His became of person of significance. SIGNIFICANCE BY SELECTION You don't need to share everything about yourself to grow your significance. It requires sharing the right things. The fans get to know you by the stories you share with them. Share the stories that build your brand. Once you've determined your ideal target listener, you know exactly what means the most to them. This is where your significance originates. Speak into their lives by sharing parts of your life with them. There are seven elements of powerful, magnetic personalities. This is how to start your journey to significance. I teach you how to elevate your significance and become a magnetic personality who attracts clients to you rather than chasing them inside of the Podcast Profits Accelerator community. This is powerful group that will help you build and implement your podcast monetization strategy. It all begins by becoming a magnetic personality. You can get full details at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/accelerator. A CHARACTER First, you need a character. That is you. Have the courage to step into who you are. You are the leader of your tribe. People want what you have. Believe in yourself. Ignore the people who aren't following you. They won't become your fans anyway. People who don't love you won't buy your products, consume your content. On the other hand, your fans will love you when you lead. ORIGIN STORY Next, you need an origin story. How did you develop your superpower? You need to be able to tell this story in ten minutes and also in 90 seconds. Your origin story is how your significance came to be. It's a critical part of your journey. This is the first step in getting people to love who you are. Share your struggles, discoveries, and successes. Gary Vaynerchuk has his origin story of how his father immigrated here from Belarus and started a liquor store. Steve Jobs had his origin story of being adopted and starting his computer company in the garage with his buddy Steve Wozniak. TRANSFORMATION The third element is the transformation. This is the moment you discovered your superpower. Think of it in terms of, "And then one day..." When was the moment you discovered this was your purpose in life? Jeff Walker of Product Launch Formula had his transformation when he did his first launch of his newsletter to 19 people. Howard Stern has his "oh wow" moment when he was frustrated and just shared his life on air one day. People started calling, and he knew he was on to something special. PRINCIPLES From your origin story, you next need to develop your foundational principles. These are the things that lay the foundation for what you do. What are the principles you won't break? Russel Brunson of ClickFunnels believes you're only one funnel away from breaking through. Dave Ramsey is against credit cards. STORIES Next, you need stories that wrap around and demonstrate your principles. Think of these like the parables in the Bible. People learn through story. There are a few stories from your journey that solidify your principles. Share these stories often. These could be small pieces of your origin story. Russel Brunson has his potato gun story. Alex Hormozi has the story of sleeping on the floor just to make it work. LINGO Personalities with significance have a certain lingo that superfans use. This is a little insider language. What phrases do you use often? Find half a dozen sayings that are common in your talks and use them often. Gary Vaynerchuk talk about arbitrage and hustle. Dave Ramsey uses “live like no one else so later you can live like no one else”. WORD OF MOUTH The final element is word of mouth. You need a handful of superfans who will spread your praises everywhere they can. Celebrate these people on your show. Get them to tell as many people as possible. Empower your superfans. Rush Limbaugh had dittoheads. Alex Hormozi has MoziNation. SIGNIFICANCE When you have accomplished all seven traits of magnetic personalities, you'll see your significance grow. Would you like my help implementing this into your show and business? Are you struggling to get noticed and grow your influence? Come join us in the Podcast Profits Accelerator. This is powerful group that will help you build and implement your podcast monetization strategy. It all begins by becoming a magnetic personality. You can get full details at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/accelerator. I can't wait to see you there.
On this day in 1983, the "The Sally Jessy Raphael Show" premiered and the syndicated tabloid talk show took the country by storm. When the show first aired it covered topics like people with extreme religious beliefs. However, in later shows Sally moved on to more personal family matters such as pregnant or out-of-control teens. Some say the show was was one of the first challengers to Phil Donahue's undisputed rule over the daytime talk world. Learn more in today's KTAR timeline brought to you by Beatitudes Campus.
Dane Cook thinks we're unprofessional, Jailbreak: Love on the Run doc on Netflix, Favre Girl v. Brett Favre, Stuttering John hits on his guest, tipping is out of control, and the Detroit Bridgerton party problem. Dane Cook will not appear on this show because “BranDon was rude”. BranDon claims we was not rude. A woman takes a phone charger on her flight and the aggrieved party confronted and filmed her. Who's the bigger jerk in this scenario? Vanessa is pretty cute, so we're more on her side. Should people who use ‘bro' often be trusted? Trudi still has high water bills. And a river under her driveway. Too Many Good Things To Stream: Jailbreak: Love on the Run is available on Netflix. It covers the jailer/convict love escape. Little Miss Perfect is on Hulu about a girl who murdered her ex's mother. The Aaron Hernandez show continues on FX. Mr. McMahon dropped on Netflix. BranDon is still in recovery. Sports: UNLV's quarterback, Matthew Sluka, is bailing on the program he feels he hasn't received his promised NIL money. Former USC RB Reggie Bush is suing everyone. NCAA, USC and Pac-12. Favre Girl, Jenn Sterger, takes shot at Brett Favre following his diagnosis of Parkinson's. Carmen Electra sounds a little trashed in her latest podcast interview. Tori Spelling and Anna Delvey are the first people eliminated from Dancing with the Stars. Hahahaha! Paulina Porizkova's brand remains crying on Instagram. The Bridgerton Party in Detroit was a DUD. We have a new Legacy winner! Congrats to ______________! We attempt to reach TJ Miller to discuss our Dane Cook controversy. Rob Schneider is still the bad boy of comedy. He's been in scraps with morning radio a time or two. RFK Jr. is a cocksman. The Olivia Nuzzi story is as wild as it is weird. Diddy's lawyer is talking as TMZ has another Diddy doc tonight. Some people are saying Jay-Z is complicit. There's one corner of the media not covering Diddy. Jennifer Aniston was swatted. Corey Feldman was so high with Sally Jessy Raphael back in the day. Everyone is sick and tired of tipping. Gen Z is struggling in the workplace. Amazon is bringing everyone back to work on site. Talk Tuah is on top of the world. The comments on her show aren't very nice though. She has a new Halloween costume that makes zero sense. We watch Stuttering John act like a buffoon with Ivy Supersonic on his show. If you'd like to help support the show… consider subscribing to our YouTube Page, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (The Drew Lane Show, Marc Fellhauer, Trudi Daniels, Jim Bentley and BranDon).

It's #Aprilsweeps where we celebrate the TV movies made by New World Television. We're kicking things off with 1989's False Witness starring Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show) and Philip Michael Thomas (Miami Vice). Lynne Jacoby (Phylicia Rashad) is a district attorney investigating the attempted murder of a popular daytime TV talk show host not unlike luminaries like Sally Jessy Raphael. Bobby Marsh (Philip Michael Thomas), an Assistant District Attorney and Jacoby's lover, joins the investigation and shows the world that not all investigators are good at their job. What lacks in real suspense is more than made up for with uncomfortable shoulder kissing. We learn that Marc doesn't recognize the difference between CSI and Law & Order, Erica talks about the many musical roles Philip Michael Thomas was up for, Ryan struggles to pronounce "Phylicia" and we debate which is the best Miami Tourism Board theme song. You will want to witness this episode.

The Equalizer Season 4 Episode 7: Making of a Martyr Aired on CBS: January 11, 1989 Directed by: Bradford May Written by : Wayne Powers & Donna Powers Featuring: Tom Noonan, Barbara Williams, Sally Jessy Raphael (as herself) First episode of 1989. This is a very special episode that doesn't seem to know what to do with its very special topic. How is The Equalizer - who in the 3 1/3 seasons we've seen so far seems to enjoy guns and the freedom to shoot more or less anyone he wants based on his own idea of justice - going to deal with a friend's wife who's bringing everybody down with this whole gun control thing. It's the first time in a while that McCalls's views seem antiquated compared to modern day. We cover the episode much more thoroughly than the episode covered the original topic. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com https://www.facebook.com/equalizerspodcast/
Legendary radio & television talk show host and Friar Sally Jessy Raphael talks with Joe Sibilia about how she became a Friar and eventually the Prior of the Friars Club, her duties as Prior, the proposal she received for the Friars Club from Purdue to "roast" one of their chickens, being honored by the Friars Club in 2000, and attending many of the Friars Club roasts. Plus, Sally shares what she used to love ordering on the menu and reminisces about her days working on WIOD in Maimi with Larry King, shooting pool with Jackie Gleason and Minnesota Fats, Tennessee Williams sitting in on her radio show, and hosting Friars Sammy Davis Jr., Carol Burnett, and Jerry Lewis on her television show.
“Mary Fisher lived in a palace by the sea.” We watched She-Devil (1989) with the hilarious H. Alan Scott aka Sadie Pines and… is that a gummy bear in your hair? The masses may have been sleeping on this camp classic for the past 35 years but, as usual, the gays know whats up. She-Devil was Meryl Streep's first real entry into comedy and her portrayal of the Jackie Collins-esque Mary Fisher is pure camp. Roseanne Barr, fresh off the first season of her hit sitcom, is the titular She-Devil but time and attitudes have changed and her character Ruth Patchett is clearly the real hero. And was it just us, or was nerdy Ed Begley Jr. secretly hot? Something about that tall drink of water in a barely there pink bath towel definitely unlocked a core memory in our tiny queer brains. Throw in legendary Linda Hunt, and cameos from Robin Leech, Deborah Rush and the one and only Sally Jessy Raphael and you've got yourself a bonafide gay classic. Today I'm excited to be speaking with P.M.H. Atwater, one of the world's leading experts on Near-Death Experiences (NDEs). After having three near-death experiences of her own in 1977, when there was very little public knowledge about them, P.M.H. began researching other peoples' NDEs using investigative techniques she learned from her adoptive father, a police officer. She has now analyzed over 4,000 NDEs and written eighteen books about them. She's been featured in Newsweek magazine and interviewed by television hosts including Regis and Kathie Lee, Larry King, and Sally Jessy Raphael. In this conversation, P.M.H. tells the story of her NDEs and shares what she's learned from over forty years of research, including the four types of NDEs, their common after-effects, the impact of NDEs in childhood, how having an NDE changes one's views on religion and spirituality, what we can learn from “hellish” NDEs, and what NDEs reveal about the purpose of life. Visit P.M.H. Atwater's website. Sign up for her newsletter. Check out her books. This ad-free podcast is supported by Sam's Torode's books, including “Living from the Soul: The 7 Spiritual Principles of Ralph Waldo Emerson,” available at www.samtorode.com.

4X4: HARMONY KORINE PT. 1 OF 2: BEAUTIFUL LOSERSPEANUT BUTTER SISTER F*CKERGUMMO & JULIEN DONKEY-BOYYou must out-plastic them this episode: Jack “The Jammin' Jabber” along with regional chair-wrestling champion Ken join Thomas (it's just Thomas) for the second director in our 4x4 series Harmony Korine (1973 – 4ever) covering not just why angels ain't got no hooves but Korine's first two films GUMMO (1997) and JULIEN DONKEY-BOY (1999). Auteur of “mistakist art” and partially raised by circus folks before his buddy got his head cut off in this park in Nashville—Harmony Korine—yes, we could cover more of the life of this enfant terrible in these show notes but if you invite Hitler into your home make sure you have ground rules about eating titties. TOP 100 SECRETS KNOWN TO THE ILLUMINATI THAT MAY HAVE KILLED BOB HOPE #62 – The connection between Meryl Streep and Harmony KorineGUMMO – Fictionally located and originally meant to be shot in Xeno, OH, home of Alien World Skateboards and many devastating tornadoes (instead shot in Harmony's hometown of Nashville, TN), this premiere film reintroduced to the world Nick Sutton (in the role of Tummler), previously unseen since his appearance on the Sally Jessy Raphael episode “My Child Died From Sniffing Paint” and Linda Mantz back onscreen after 16 years as mother to Nick's friend, fellow entrepreneur, and occasional narrator Solomon. Layering of images and sound and little rooster goes cock-a-doodle-doo-doo-la-doo-la-doo and blurring the line between script and fiction and the lives of those the camera normally doesn't see and sure, sure, nothing new for trash like you. JULIEN DONKEY-BOY – Invited to make the first film in the U.S. under Dogme 95 rules (which it'd break and be the second American film to do so), Korine chose to induce schizophrenia in viewers through digital cameras, editing, and a titular character based on his uncle who would have been cast in the film but failed to receive institutional release. With blind ice skaters, armless drummer, and a cast of non-professional actors, this film in 2022 remains ranked in the Top 20 films of all times starring a Black albino straight from Alabama. Plus, Werner Herzog as Julien's father holds court at the dinner table, recounting a scene from Dirty Harry. Sit back with a brown paper bag of your favorite brand of huffing glue (or vintage cough syrup and house slipper if that's your poison) and enjoy the careening visual lyricism that is Harmony.(episode write-up by Thomas)THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096

The Mafia Cops Louis Eppolito was practically born into the Mafia. His father was a Gambino family soldier known as Fat the Gangster. An uncle known as Jimmy the Clam, a grandfather and a cousin were made men, too. By age 10, Louis was joining his father on his bookmaking rounds. A life in organized crime seemed preordained, but Louis's interest faded after several relatives were killed by rival gangsters. So after graduating from high school, Louis went in a different direction: he joined the New York Police Department. It was an unlikely career that earned him many medals and headlines. But Mr. Eppolito would end up at the center of one of the biggest scandals in department history. He and a fellow detective, Stephen Caracappa, were convicted in 2006 of moonlighting as mob assassins, involved in eight gangland slayings while on the payroll of Anthony Casso, a Luchese crime family underboss known as Gaspipe. Mr. Eppolito, 71, died on Nov. 3 at a hospital in Tucson, Ariz., his wife, Frances Ann Eppolito, confirmed this week, without providing a cause. He had been serving a life sentence at the high-security United States penitentiary nearby. After their arrest, Mr. Eppolito and Mr. Caracappa, who died at a medical detention facility in 2017 at 75, became widely known as the “Mafia Cops.” The nickname came easily: Mr. Eppolito had already written a memoir, “Mafia Cop: The Story of an Honest Cop Whose Family Was the Mob” (1992), in which he recounted his mob pedigree. Louis John Eppolito was born on July 22, 1948, in Brooklyn and grew up in East Flatbush, according to the memoir. His father, Ralph, was a professional criminal. His mother, Theresa, was a registered nurse. Mr. Eppolito knew by the time he was 12 that his father killed people for pay, he acknowledged on Sally Jessy Raphael's talk show in 1992 while promoting his book. But he did not know details. The following exchange, he said, was typical. Editors' Picks “If I said to him, ‘What happened to this guy?' He'd say ‘He had to go.'” “Go where, Dad? Where did he go? To St. Louis?” “No. He's gone.” According to “Mafia Cop,” Ralph Eppolito beat his son often, but also instilled in him a lifelong respect for “honor and loyalty.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

Speaking of being “the first”, we chat with Sally about some of the others she has paved the way for - Oprah (yes, we chat about the Meghan and Harry sit down), Ellen (yes, we chat about her mean girl reputation and the loss of 1 million viewers as a “supposed” result), Wendy Williams (and all she is going through), Drew Barrymore (newbie) Kelly Clarkson (is it an easy transition for actors and singers?), and last but certainly not least, Miss Bethenny Frankel (well, that was short lived.). Of course, we chat with Sally about The View - all the rumored back stage infighting, “Ladies Who Punch”, Barbara Walters, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Kelly & Ryan. Since we have an Icon in our presence, we discuss the late night talk show scene such as Daddy Andy Cohen's WWHL and Joan Rivers' infamous short lived stint. Remember we mentioned those iconic red glasses, we chat with Sally about the origins of her trademark look, how many pairs she actually has, does she ever go out incognito, and whether she ever tires of them. An unbelievable trip down memory lane with the pioneer herself, Miss Sally Jessy Raphael. @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought To You By: NATIVE - www.nativedeo.com/velvet (20% Off Your First Order. When they covered the Colin Farrell remake of TOTAL RECALL a few months ago, Cooper couldn't believe that Nolan had never seen the (vastly superior) original. And while that version might be too good to appear on a bad movie podcast, it's the perfect choice for a BONUS EPISODE! Just like Doug Quaid, the guys are letting their minds wander on this one - original Nintendo, Boglins, Sally Jessy Raphael, Little People Big World - nothing is off limits. So strap yourself in, because this very special episode (featuring a beer from Halcyon Barrel House) is one that you won't forget!

We get ghostly with author Michael H. Brown and talk about unexplained and mysterious stories from his newest book, Lying Wonders, Strangest Things. Known initially for his ground-breaking reportage on the New York waste Love Canal toxic crisis, he has penned books on everything from the Mafia to the search for the first anatomically-modern human woman using DNA. Since 1991 he has written Christian books, including bestselling, The Final Hour, The Other Side, and Laying Waste. In his days as a journalist, his work appeared in publications such as The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, and Reader’s Digest. He also appeared on shows such as Today, Nightline, Phil Donahue, Joan Rivers, Sally Jessy Raphael and Coast-To-Coast (with Art Bell). He lives in Florida with wife Lisa and three children.
Fascinating. Terrifying. Mystifying. You'll find all that and more in... LYING WONDERS, STRANGEST THINGS BY MICHAEL H. BROWN SPECIAL GUEST AUTHOR: Michael H. Brown, is editor of SpiritDaily.com, and the award-winning author of the bold new book, Lying Wonders, Strangest Things. What are the most amazing things that have occurred in recent times on this planet we call earth? Is there an actual "twilight zone"? Are there real "x-files"? And might it be... a spiritual war cry? We live at a time of unprecedented supernatural phenomena. A boy disappears into thin air (time and again). Rock 'n' roll stars encounter UFOs. A woman is tortured by two invisible entities. Certain of the accounts may be mere oddities - truly, the "strangest things" in God's mysterious Creation. But just as often they're glimpses of what Christians call "lying wonders" - a spiritual invasion. What do big foot and UFOs have in common? And lake monsters? What about curses: Are there ones that changed history? Could there really be a doll that texts? This credible and yet incredible collection of the most fantastic factual accounts gathered during the past five decades by nationally-known journalist Michael H. Brown shows - as a philosopher named J. B. S. Haldane once put it - that the universe in which we reside is not only stranger than we imagine, but stranger than we can imagine. Jonathan Berent, L.C.S.W. has pioneered treatment for performance and social anxiety since 1978. A certified psychotherapist, he has worked with thousands of individuals of all ages in individual, group, and family psychotherapy. He has appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show", "Sally Jessy Raphael", "Joan Rivers", "CNN Medical News" and many other TV and radio shows. His Social Anxiety website is a premier resource for resolving social anxiety disorder. A primary area he addresses is public speaking anxiety. His proven methodology channels anxiety into high performance. He resolves the emotions of embarrassment, shame, and humiliation that many who are anxious about public speaking suffer. We interviewed Mr. Berent to learn more about the issue and his solution. Terror in the C-Suite There are successful C-Suite executives who admit they'd rather get into a car accident on the way to a conference than show up and face the crowd for their presentation. One real estate executive who easily closed $3 billion deals fell into a state of terror when faced with talking about this to a group of students on career day. Panic at the podium—and embarrassment over the obvious symptoms—is debilitating for many executives and entrepreneurs and can include symptoms such as erythrophobia (Fear of Blushing), hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating) and voice paralysis. Fear of public speaking is not simply an inconvenience; it’s an income inhibitor, career killer, and an insidious anxiety disorder that most mental health and medical professionals do not understand. More than a quarter of the population reports a fear of public speaking, according to a recent Chapman University survey of American's top fears. While countless programs attack the problem on the surface through coaching, skill building and practice, almost none focus on the underlying causes. Practical Steps The good news is that you don’t have to suffer this unwelcome anxiety anymore. His book, Work Makes Me Nervous, empowers people to transform stress into positive energy using an evidence-based, step-by-step method. This down-to-earth resource combines practical psychological techniques and exercises with real-life stories. He explains how everyone from entry-level workers to seasoned executives and famous sports and media figures have encountered and successfully dealt with workplace anxiety—and how you can too. If you, or anyone you know, suffer from anxiety about public speaking, I highly recommend this book. As he says "Don't wait! The time to change is now!" To hear more about the issues he's encountered in over 40 years of clinical practice, treating over 10,000 patients, and the steps you can take, click on the podcast icon below.

Today I get on my soapbox and tell people how they're doing things wrong and need to do it the way I think it needs to be done. Ok, maybe not that bluntly but I do make my points on how people give credit for their accomplishments to others but take all the blame when it comes to their downfalls. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/everyoneneedsalittle/support

Bernadette Duncan spent twenty-six years as a radio talk show producer. In "Yappy Days: Behind the Scenes with Newsers, Schmoozers, Boozers and Losers," she vividly recounts her adventures in the trenches of big-time talk radio during its most dynamic decades set against the dramatically changing backdrop of America's pre- and post-9/11 realities. This candidly told story includes Bernadette's firsthand impressions of the sometimes quirky celebrity talk show hosts whom she served as a producer during her career. In talk radio, a producer does a wide variety of tasks in facilitating a show, including booking the guests, screening the listener phone calls, occasionally engineering the program, and most important, holding the hands, supporting, consoling, encouraging, and simply trying to get along with some of the most egotistical, egocentric, neurotic, insecure, demanding, opinionated, sometimes horrible, but oftentimes wonderful and always remarkably talented human beings to talk across the face of the earth. They include some of the biggest in the business: Larry King, Sally Jessy Raphael, Gil Gross, Tom Snyder, Lou Dobbs, Charles Osgood, and more. Bernadette also collected a number of insightful anecdotes interacting with hundreds of high-profile guests during those caffeine-charged years, from media, show business, and politics—many as quirky, ego-driven, and neurotic as her talk show host bosses. ""Yappy Days: Behind the Scenes with Newsers, Schmoozers, Boozers and Losers"" is a fun, breezy, informative, and gently analytical look at the media, journalism, and the complex nature of ego.
I've been called many things, but Dave Mercer comparing me to Oprah and Sally Jessy Raphael has got to be one of the strangest. When I got the chance to connect with Dave, I expected a great high-energy chat, but it was great getting to see the more thoughtful side of the man. In our last episode, Dave talked about his daughter's diagnosis of autism, something he really hadn't talked about before this interview. He shared some sage advice about keeping perspective and putting on your game face every day, and about how desire and dedication are key to achieving your goals. In part 3, we get exactly the Dave everyone expected: a fantastic story-telling, telling wild tales. Dave was so kind as to indulge me and share my very favorite story; one that appears in his book: 135 Secrets Fish Don't Want You To Know. You may know the "Bait Bucket" story, and it's one the poor guy has probably told a hundred times, but Dave tells it again for us, because that's the kind of guy he is. Who Else Wants A Unique Brand? – PTC Episode 076 A memorable brand that becomes a household name. It is like the Holy Grail. So many companies strive for it, but so few achieve it. Why is that? A brand is a type of product manufactured by a particular company under a particular name, a brand name, a particular identity or image regarded as an asset, or a particular type or kind of something. But, when we think of a brand, we think of so much more. There is so much more emotion in a powerful brand. Under those definitions, Honda is a brand. However, it is a much different brand than Harley Davidson. Star Trek is a brand, although a much different brand than Battlestar Galactica. Oprah is a brand. I don't think anyone would equal Oprah's brand to that of Sally Jessy Raphael. Each of those iconic brands were available at the same time their counterpart was making a name for themselve. Yet, the iconic brands became huge, powerful, valuable names. That's not to say the other brands were not familiar or valuable. Those competitor brands simply did not become the astronomical brands of the segment leaders. Why is that? What can you learn from these iconic brands that can help your podcast become a name, identity or image, but a name that evokes powerful emotion from your listener. How can you create fans instead of a casual audience? Here are six steps you can put into use this week to begin to develop your unique brand. Develop Your Style Create everything you do in your own style. Powerful brands have a style all their own. Your style is your way of doing something. Are you friendly? How about challenging or argumemtative? Maybe you are the Everyman. Is your podcast a narrative or instructional? Are you explosive, soothing or euphoric? Do I hear sarcasm in your show? Are you a friend to everybody or the guy they love to hate? Do you take risks or play it close to the vest? Each piece plays into your style. You can only stand out among all other shows when you create your own unique style. You must then make sure everything you do is consistent with that style. Many new broadcasters try to emulate the style of their hero or mentor. They attempt to imitate the styles they hear from other broadcasters. Unfortunately, copying doesn't create a unique style. Copying typically creates a watered-down version of some other style. When creating your content, be yourself and find your own style. Some of the greatest broadcasters didn't start the ascension to the top until they abandoned the attempts to broadcast in the style they thought others desired and began being true to themselves. Oprah Winfrey quit trying to be a traditional news anchor. She also quit doing the typical tabloid, daytime talk show like Sally Jessy Raphael was doing at the time. When she began to create the show she always desired, she went to the top of the game. Howard Stern began as a radio DJ sounding like every other radio DJ. He was playing the records and spouting the lines written by management while going nowhere. If you watch “Private Parts”, Stern's autobiographical movie, one of the classic scenes is Howard trying to recite “W-N-B-C” just like his boss wants everyone to do it. When Stern decided he was going to do radio his way, he began to make a name for himself. He also went to the top. Rush Limbaugh followed a very similar path. His bland radio name was Jeff Christie. He followed the format designed by somebody else. Limbaugh made every attempt to fulfill the typical radio DJ stereotype. He also got fired again and again. When he decided to broadcast in his style and true to his beliefs, he began his rise to the top. Adam Corolla made his climb when he took full control over his style and show. He was climbing the DJ ladder in Los Angeles. Corolla had some decent television work. He then decided to create his own show in his own style via podcast. That began his rise as one of the biggest podcasters in the world. All of these broadcasters made the decision to stop copying others. They all created shows that were true to their style. They each also stay true to their style in everything they do. You will never hear Rush sound like Howard. You'll never mistake something Oprah says as something Adam might say. Being true to their style isn't something that takes conscious effort. It comes easy to each of them, because it is true to who they are as people. Be true to yourself. It will make it easy to create everything you do in your style. Define Your Character With Stories I'm not simply talking about your integrity. By character, I mean all of the attributes that create you, as in character in a play. The purpose of your show is to attract an audience. Whether you want to monetize that relationship, encourage a call-to-action, or simply create an audience for your ideas, creating the audience is where you begin. The stories you choose to tell reveal how open you are to others. Your openness is a sign of trust. Trust is a big piece of a relationship. Reveal things about yourself through your stories and you'll begin to build trust with your listener. The details you include tell your listener what you value. If the listener feels you value things they too value, you solidify the relationship. People like to hang out with similar people. If your values are opposite of your listener, you may also attract them. It is like a love/hate relationship. They may dislike it, but they continue to listen. This often happens when talking politics. What you find entertaining will be evident by the stories you tell. Since people like other people who have similar tastes, revealing those things you find entertaining will also build the relationship. Stories also have the power to demonstrate your vulnerability. Stories can show that you are a real person. Your listener will see you as approachable. They also may begin to see you as a friend. That is when true relationships begin to form. Iconic brands use their story. Oprah uses her story of her upbringing and career building by breaking down barriers. Her weight loss. Her struggles to cut a new path in daytime talk. Howard's story of defying “The Man” and doing it his way inspires others. Rush was told he would never make it on the air and should consider radio sales. Harley Davidson was a joke in the motorcycle industry. Harley owners had two bikes … one to ride and one for parts. Harley now stands for independence and “take no flack” attitude. Foster a relationship with your listener by revealing things about yourself through stories. Stories will define your character. Don't Just Fill Time You never catch Oprah just going through the motions. She would never have typical guests on her show. When others were interviewing the co-star of some moving, Oprah would interview the President of the United States. Oprah has Tom Cruise jumping on her couch. You never knew what was going to happen on Oprah's show. When you fill time, you waste time. Your listeners have come to your podcast, because you have made them a promise with your brand. They believe they will receive some sort of information and entertainment from your show. Your listener will only give you a few minutes to begin delivering, or they will be headed to the next podcast. Consistently add value for your listener at every opportunity. Either make the show shorter, or prepare better. It is usually a solid rule of thumb to prepare more content than you will need. This will allow you to always deliver valuable information. Seth Godin does a fantastic job delivering brief bits of valuable information with his blog. He even carries this through to the manifestos published by his Domino Project. Seth wastes very little time. Once he has made his point, he wraps it up. Your listener is expecting something from your podcast. Deliver continuously on the promise of your brand. Don't just fill time. Be Memorable When other shows would give away a television, Oprah would give a television to everyone in the audience. Now, everyone does it. If you want to keep your listener coming back show after show, you need to make them remember to come back. You need to remain top-of-mind for your listener. That is the purpose of audience engagement. Make your listener remember you for something specific about your show. As you build your show, make it about one thing. Find one particular thing that will be remembered. If you try to be all things to all people, you will water down the show. Everything will be nice. However, isn't usually truly memorable. You will get lost in the millions of messages your listener receives on a daily basis. Find the magic. Your listener should remember one thing about your show this week. What will that be? Stir emotion. Make it amazing. Bring your listener back. Be memorable. Move Beyond Information Make your show emotional. That deep connection creates relationships. The goal of our podcasts is to create strong relationships with our audiences. We can take those relationships and move our listeners with a call to action. To achieve that strong relationship, we need to move beyond information to engaging entertainment. Dan Miller, author of “48 Days To The Work You Love” could simply explain how you might find a new job. Instead, Dan instills the belief in his listeners that there is more to work than a paycheck. He stirs emotion describing how you can turn your passion into your career. Dan uses that emotion to turn his job finding information into engaging entertainment. Financial information is turned into entertainment on “The Dave Ramsey Show” when Dave turns debt into the enemy. He doesn't simply walk you through the steps to become debt free. Dave helps you find that burning desire to escape the shackles of debt. He makes you envision the possibility of “living like no one else”. His help becomes engaging entertainment. That is the reason his show is extremely popular and he is very wealthy. Our shows can be powerful when we build relationships and move our listeners with a call to action. Those relationships happen when we move beyond information to engaging entertainment. Risky Stands Out It was a risk for Rush Limbaugh to step out and be incredibly opinionated regarding politics. Now, there are hundreds of shows that do the same thing. It was a risk for Harley Davidson to embrace the bad ass lifestyle. Today you can see middle aged guys riding their bike to the office. It was a risk for Oprah to walk away from the standard daytime tabloid drama that made her successful. You cannot flip through the stations today without finding a dozen copycats of Oprah's style. However, none of them achieved the success of Oprah. As we develop meaningful relationships with your podcast, we in turn build credibility that will support our call-to-action within your show. To develop strong relationships, you need to create engaging entertainment that will get you remembered by your listener. To be remembered, you must stand out. You stand out when you are loved. You are remembered when you are hated. You fade into the background when you are plain, vanilla and trying to not upset anyone. If you don't stir strong emotions, you are easily forgotten. When we create, we expose our perspective. We open ourselves to criticism. It is natural to want your thoughts, views, art and creation to be accepted by everyone. To avoid being disappointed, we often play it safe. Those fantastic, memorable personalities are usually both loved and hated. Rush Limbaugh is loved by the conservatives and hated by the liberals. Dave Ramsey is loved by the conservative investor and hated by credit card companies and whole life insurance salespeople. Dr. Laura would consistently be critical of her callers. Yet she would receive more callers than she could handle on any given show. Safety lacks creativity. It is risky to be truly creative. However, that is really the only way to get noticed. Safe blends in. Risky stands out. I'd love to help you with your podcast. Post any questions or comments you might have, or e-mail me at Coach@PodcastTalentCoach.com. She has completed 10 books on her findings since starting her pioneering work in this area in 1978. They come back wiser and more intelligent than before, more sensitive, intuitive, and open..."
