Digitized, remastered and edited in May, 2023. Robert Anton Wilson had a remarkable career. Starting as a writer of comic science fiction based on historical stories of conspiracy, his work soon turned in the direction of physics, psychology, and futurism, and described himself as an agnostic mystic. In the religion or philosophy known as discordianism, he is considered both pope and saint. A journalist in his early career, he co-edited the Playboy Magazine forum, and covered the work of both Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert, later known as Ram Dass. Most of his best known works were written in the 1970s and 1980s, though he continued to write non-fiction into the 21st century. These include The Illuminati Trilogy, co-written with Robert Shea, The Schrodinger's Cat and Cosmic Trigger trilogies, and Prometheus Rising. His early works were published by large commercial presses; his later by small presses. Most, of not all, of his books still remain in print. The three books mentioned toward the end of the interview were all published and are all available. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She has since drawn live alongside the catwalk during shows by designers such as Pam Hogg, Vivienne Westwood and Zandra Rhodes, illustrated behind the scenes for Andrew Logan‘s Alternative Miss World and appeared drawing backstage during the 2018 film 'Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist'. Her style is a combination of strong lines, painterly textures and intense, contrasting colours. Yet, despite her constant search for evolution and change, these characteristics of her artistic language have remained intact since the beginnings of her prolific career, during the golden eighties.Today Sue is regularly commissioned by magazines and designers for the drawings and sketches she creates during the unveiling of collections in all the major fashion capitals, throughout fashion season. In 2018 she was Fashion Scout‘s first resident artist for the Spring/Summer collection of London Fashion Week, during which we could see her standing in a sea of surrealism at her elegant easel, a mouth full of paintbrushes, surrounded by throngs of press photographers, all competing with her for the best images from each collection. Following an approach by Apple in 2015, she has also found time to experiment with digital drawing – a medium she has come to appreciate when working under the hectic conditions of fashion shows. Last but not least, it is impossible to ignore the extent of her teaching experience: Sue has taught in the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States and was, for eight years, course leader of the Fashion Illustration Course at The London College of Fashion. She continues to contribute to this renowned institution as a guest lecturer, nurturing future generations of fashion artists with her vibrant teaching style and a faith in the arts that exudes life, spontaneity, authenticity and innovation. And now, enjoy the interview!_____________________Related LinksSue Dray: Website | Instagram_____________________For further information about this interview, including links to anything mentioned by Sue, or to continue reading this text in Spanish, English and Italian, visit the Metralla Rosa website.Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/metrallarosa)

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 7, 2020 is: multifarious • mul-tuh-FAIR-ee-us • adjective : having or occurring in great variety : diverse Examples: "The word 'fate,' of course, did not help me, being inadequate to describe the sense of a multifarious, infinitely complex, dreamy yet purposeful universe which I had in mind—being altogether too singular a word…." — Fay Weldon, The Cloning of Joanna May, 1989 "Just Pictures speaks to the multifarious nature of imagery today, a quality that predates the internet and social media but is no doubt enhanced by them. At its core, the exhibition expresses the way in which photographs at once carry all kinds of meanings that we project onto them, and no one meaning at all." — Megan Williams, Creative Review, 25 Sept. 2020 Did you know? Before the late 16th-century appearance of multifarious, there was another word similar in form and meaning being used: multifary, meaning "in many ways," appeared—and disappeared—in the 15th century. Before either of the English words existed, there was the Medieval Latin word multifarius, from Latin multifariam, meaning "in many places" or "on many sides." Multi-, as you may know, is a combining form meaning "many." A relative of multifarious in English is omnifarious ("of all varieties, forms, or kinds"), created with omni- ("all") rather than multi-.

We sincerely apologise and ask that our lovely listeners persevere regardless. Thankfully, it doesn't last for long.] This episode of The Writer and the Critic was recorded live at Continuum 11: Southern Skies -- the Melbourne speculative fiction and pop culture convention. In keeping with tradition, the special guests on the podcast were the convention's Guests of Honour, Tansy Rayner Roberts and R.J. (Rebecca) Anderson, who each recommended a favourite novel to talk about. After introductions and some entertaining banter concerning Doctor Who fan fic, chocolate-mousse-filled cronuts and secret author identity crises, the discussion moves on to the books. Rebecca's pick was The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner (15:40) while Tansy chose Growing Rich by Fay Weldon (59:20). Fans of Fay Weldon might also be interested to know that the 1992 mini-series of Growing Rich is available to view in full on YouTube. You're welcome. If you'd skipped ahead to avoid spoilers, it's safe to come back at 1:31:30 for final remarks. For the next episode, Kirstyn has chosen The Godless by Ben Peek while Ian is recommending The Book of the Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison. Read ahead and join in the spoilerific fun!

In this special episode of the Stage Door podcast the spotlight falls on 'Someone Like You', the 1989 / 1990 British musical.'Someone Like You' is a musical with lyrics by Dee Shipman, music by Petula Clark and a book by Robin Midgley and Fay Weldon.Based on a concept developed by Clark over a period of several years, it is set in West Virginia immediately after the end of the Civil War. Originally entitled 'Amen', it was conceived as a dark view of the difficulties Southerners faced dealing with carpetbaggers during the Reconstruction period, and also dealt with the problems of morphine-addicted Confederate soldiers returning home. It lost many of its serious overtones as the project evolved; Clark and Shipman's original book was revised substantially by Weldon, who also contributed the new title.Directed by Midgley, the musical premiered on October 25, 1989 at the Cambridge Arts Theatre in Cambridge, and in his review in the Cambridge Evening News, Alan Kersey wrote, "Petula Clark proved last night at the world premiere of 'Someone Like You' that she can still work wonders both on stage and in the tough real world of show business." The production toured the UK until December 9 1989.On March 22, 1990, 'Someone Like You' transferred to the Strand Theatre in London's West End. In addition to Clark, it starred Dave Willetts ('The Phantom of the Opera', 'Les Miserables') as the Major and Clive Carter as Kane. Reviews were mixed, although most critics praised Clark's performance and her contribution to the score.Due to financial difficulties faced by producer Harold Fielding, all his assets were seized, and the show closed without warning after the April 25 performance. Although an original cast album was never released at the time, Clark's recordings of several of the songs have been issued on various CDs throughout the ensuing years. The programme features interviews with Dee Shipman and Dave Willetts and an archive interview with Petula Clark from March 1990. The programme also features excerpts from previously unheard rehearsal takes performed by Dave Willetts.  Produced and presented by Tim Hutton for Stage Door Records with thanks to John Craig at First Night Records, Dee Shipman, Paul Jacobs and Dave Willetts.Recommended Links:First Night RecordsDee ShipmanDave WillettsRecommended Listening:Someone Like You EP (First Night Records)Dee Shipman - She Isn't Me (Stage Door Records)Steve Barton - Only For A While (Stage Door Records)Dave Willetts - Once In A Lifetime (Stage Door Records)

She has written over 30 novels but maintains that this is the one that she is most proud of, with its characteristic black humour and impressive prescience about the science of cloning and how it might affect the human race.
