One of those partners, Kliegman, started his party-planning career back at New York University (NYU) and his résumé speaks for itself. We paint adopters as heroes, but in reality, there is nothing heroic about taking somebody else's kid. There are so many ways to support such families!   Today, Matthew Anthony joins us on the show to explore transnational/racial adoption. Matthew Anthony, formerly known as Matthew Charles, is a Black transnational/racial adoptee, a survivor of a cult, writer, poet, author of You Can Not Burn The Sun (2020), and host of little did u know - a podcast that seeks to reveal the precarity of transnational/racial adoption and dream of an Abolitionist future by centering Adoptees and Professionals. He currently lives in Baltimore and is eagerly plotting his escape from this capitalist hellhole. In the session, Mathew shares his rough experience as a transnational/racial adoptee in a white evangelical family, the legality of adoption, his poem about Moses & how it's relevant to every adoptee's life, as well as how to save a black child's life. Besides, we delve into creating a safe space for our future descendants through art and raising the adoptees' voices no matter how many relationships we lose!  Timestamps: [00:57] About Mathew Anthony [03:47] What it means to be a transnational/transracial adoptee in the US [09:17] The legality of the adoption [17:52] Matthew's caregivers & why they didn't feel the need to protect him [25:06] Matthew's poem on Moses & how it relates to his life as an adoptee [36:17] Difference between white & black art [40:08] Creating a safe space for all marginalized kids & future descendants [53:43] Ethiopia closing adoption & protecting their children [54:50] Anthony's most shocking moment in life as an adoptee that shifted his perspective on everything [01:00:00] Jo's story on losing most of her relationships for defending adoptees Let's Connect! What is it like to spend years saving up your money, and then watch as its value rapidly declines? Or to have a pension which no longer pays for even your basic needs? Inflation in Turkey is soaring, with some estimates putting the annual rate at fifty percent. The Covid pandemic has meant that prices are rising around the world, but Turkey's particularly high figure has led some to blame the unorthodox economic policies of the country's President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Ayla Jean Yackley visited an Istanbul market to hear more. When our correspondent in Colombia contracted Covid, he assumed he would get the medical treatment he needed; after all, he did have health insurance. However, that was not how it turned out, and in the process, Matthew Charles got a first-hand picture of how things work in the Colombian healthcare system: who gets the help they need, and why it is they who get it. Denmark's capital, Copenhagen, has a problem with street prostitution, in the sense that prostitutes and clients sometimes have sex actually in the street, or else they end up going back to the client's homes, where the women may not be safe. As a way of tackling this, the city's sex workers are now being offered a new place to see their clients: in the back of a van. Linda Pressly was invited to see how this works. Conspiracy theorists are hard to argue with, as any fact offered to challenge their world view can be dismissed as a lie of the mainstream media. So when Stephanie Hegarty travelled to the US to meet adherents of the “QAnon” theory, she did not expect to change their minds. These are people who believe there is an international, underground sex ring, linked to senior world leaders with a secret fondness for worshipping the devil. However, she was surprised at the details of QAnon beliefs, and the tenacity with which supporters cling to them. We are all probably aware of the lasting effect that children's books can have. Stories discovered in our early years may stay with us for the rest of our lives, so too the pictures and plots. Our Paris Correspondent, Hugh Schofield has long held a candle for Caroline, the bold little girl who featured in a long-running series of French children's books dating back to the 1950s. So it was a great surprise when he had the chance to actually meet her.

Hundreds of foreign nationals are being evacuated from Wuhan, the centre of China's coronavirus outbreak, as more deaths and cases are confirmed. British citizens being flown back to the UK from the city will be put in quarantine for two weeks. Stephen McDonnell was recently in Hubei province where the disease was first identified and is now back in Beijing. He too has been told to stay at home for a fortnight and he reflects on how even the Chinese capital feels eerily deserted. This month, Colombia’s war crimes tribunal, the court which was created as part of the 2016 peace deal between the government and the left wing guerrillas known as the FARC or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, began hearing testimony about the illegal recruitment of children and teenagers. The FARC denies that it ever forced underage soldiers to fight. But the Prosecutor General’s office says the guerrillas recruited more than 5,000 minors during the decades long conflict. Matthew Charles visited one of the worst affected communities in the eastern province of Vaupes . It’s been a year since a dam at a mine in Brazil collapsed, killing 270 people. The dam, near Brumadinho in the province of Minas Gerais was owned by the mining company Vale - and just last week 11 of its employees, including its former President, were charged with murder over the incident. While investigations into how it collapsed and who’s to blame continue, the community next to the iron ore mine is struggling to pick up the pieces. Katy Watson returned to speak to survivors. The Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei has just moved from Germany to the UK. In 2015 he was released from house arrest and to much fanfare arrived in Berlin. Berliners were thrilled to give refuge to such a global star. And Ai Weiwei said he loved Germany. But since then the mutual admiration has faded: Ai Weiwei has given a series of interviews in which he’s said he’s leaving Berlin in part because Germans are rude, racist and authoritarian. In Germany that has sparked outrage and some soul searching. Damien McGuinness wonders whether Germans really are impolite or simply misunderstood. New York's health care system is often accused of being expensive and labyrinthine. Yet a visit to two hospitals in Brooklyn and Manhattan left Laura Trevelyan feeling curiously uplifted, despite the physical pain, and the bureaucracy of US healthcare. On her odyssey through the emergency rooms, she made some new friends while guided by an old one.

The word, 'Hold Down' can mean a variety of different things. This holds true within some of the trending topics the crew talked about. As always, Apple never fails with holding the world down with their innovation! The tech giant on Monday announced a press event on March 25 where it is widely expected to unveil its TV streaming services that will offer iPhone and iPad owners access to free original shows along with other streaming services, estimating 100 million users in just three years. Likewise...just from a humanistic standpoint, Kim Kardashian holds down 5 years rent for freed man who was denied housing. Matthew Charles was granted early release by mistake in 2016, after serving 21 years of a 35-year sentence for non-violent drug and weapons charges and was forced to return to prison last May to finish his sentence. However, on January 3, Charles became one of the first people to benefit from the First Step Act, a bill supported by Van Jones’ REFORM Alliance that aims to reduce non-violent prison sentences. BIG props to Kim K.! You want to talk about holding it down! Deborah Brown, a Richmond, Va. resident won the state’s lottery 30 times in one day in February—ensuring that this year’s Black History Month was really great for at least one person. She bought 30 “Pick 4" tickets with the same winning combination: 1-0-3-1. Brown initially bought 20 tickets with that combination at a gas station in Chesterfield County. So later that day, she bought 10 more tickets at the same location with the same numbers. Good luck to her...like she really needs it at this point. This was not the way to hold things down! A white fifth-grade social studies teacher at Chapel School in Bronxville, N.Y., reportedly organized a mock slave auction where the teacher took the black students into the hall, put “imaginary chains” on their necks and wrists and shackled their ankles before parading them in front of their white classmates who posed as wealthy slave owners playing the original version of The Price Is Right’s showcase showdown. DAMN! We also had in studio upcoming, local DMV rap sensation, Young Sir. Check him our everywhere @youngsirdmv and or www.youngsirdmv.com. Back at you next Wednesday with more of what you want!

S8E6: Forced to Return to Prison After Serving 21 Years: The Story of Matthew Charles At age 30, Matthew was arrested for selling 216 grams of crack cocaine to an informant and illegally possessing a firearm. He was given a 35-year sentence. In prison, Matthew could easily have crawled deeper into his shell of anger, but he didn’t. His prison life was directed at exemplary rehabilitation. He took college courses and became a law clerk. And most importantly, Matthew became “genuinely repentant of his life before encountering the Grace of Christ, not offering empty excuses about his past, but taking ownership,” as a pastor would later describe him. In 2013, Matthew applied for a sentence modification because the Sentencing Commission had lowered guideline ranges for drug offenses. At his re-sentencing hearing, Judge Kevin Sharp commended his rehabilitation and reduced Matthew’s sentence. After spending 21 years in prison on a 35-year sentence, Matthew Charles was released in 2016. However, after a year and half of freedom, the court reversed the reduction in sentence, citing an error in his release. Remarkably, Matthew was sent back to prison in May of 2018 to serve out the rest of his sentence with more than a decade left to go. Then, the First Step Act, signed into law by President Trump on December 21, 2018, included a provision to apply the Fair Sentencing Act retroactively, which the government agreed would allow for Matthew’s immediate release. On January 3, 2019, Matthew Charles finally left prison for good. www.wrongfulconvictionpodcast.com Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom is a production of Lava For Good™ Podcasts in association with Signal Co. Matthew Charles was convicted of seven charges related to the possession and sale of crack cocaine. This was in 1996, when the crack-to-cocaine ratio was still 100 to 1, meaning that selling one gram of crack carried the same punishment as 100 grams of cocaine. Matthew was got a sentence of 30 years to life. While he served his term, the sentencing guidelines were changed. Matthew had a perfect behavioral record while incarcerated, and was released early in 2016, having spent almost half his life on the inside. He got steady work, started volunteering at a halfway house every weekend, bought clothing, furniture, a cell phone, rented a room in East Nashville. He re-established relationships with friends and family, and got into a serious romantic relationship. Basically, he built a life outside prison. But a federal court ruled his term was reduced in error and ordered him back behind bars to finish his sentence. Matthew donated his belongings, said goodbye to his girlfriend and family, and turned himself in. How and why did this happen? If the point of prison is rehabilitation, why did a judge decide that Matthew needed more? Julieta Martinelli covered this case for Nashville Public Radio. She joins us this week with the strange, sad story of Matthew Charles.

Josh discusses clemency for Matthew Charles with Kevin Ring of FAMM. Thanks to The Crime Report for publishing my Op-Ed supporting passage of the First Step Act. Our new dedicated website is DecarcerationNation.com Kevin Ring is the President of Families Against Mandatory Minimums. As near as I can tell, this is the original Julietta Martinelli story from last December, she also wrote this article last week as Mr. Charles was returning to prison. The Career Offender sentencing guidelines (like the ones that forced Mr. Charles back to prison) are pernicious and are often very counterproductive. We all hope you will join us in signing "This Petition" for clemency/commutation for Mr. Matthew Charles. The first tweet in the amazing Twitter thread from Kevin Ring we discussed during this episode started with the linked tweet. You can read Mr. Pfaff's book "Locked In" or any of the articles quoting his recitation of the evidence proving that people "age out" of violent crime." Episode 2 of Decarceration Nation was entirely about this (largely fake) distinction between violence and non-violence in the law (one of my personal favorite episodes of the podcast). Learn more about the Bureau of Prisons drug programs including RDAP from their site. Some of the articles supporting President Trump granting a commutation to Mr. Charles include articles in The National Review, The Federalist, and The Root. I have also seen calls for his release on social media from the ACLU and Cut 50. Please sign the Petition to free Mr. Charles!!!! The petition, at this moment, is about to break 65k signatures. Episode 34: Season 1 Finale    Well, I finally got around to putting out an episode that we will call our season 1 finale. For those who follow us on Twitter and Facebook, you know that I've been really sick for the last few weeks and unable to make an episode. With my illness effecting everything, especially my family, I've decided that 210 will be a seasonal podcast. I only plan on taking a month or two off, but don't worry, I'll also be using that time to knock out some interviews, get a hold of more music, and gather more amazing and new types of content for you. With that being said, This episode is a mixture of previously unreleased interview moments that I found kinda fun, as well as some music.    First up, I wanted to share some of the beginning recording of the interview I did with The Black Market Club. I figure this will give you some more fun tidbits of their personalities and mine. We'll talk about ears of corn, John Wayne, my backup mics, and a minor sound check.    Next up, I've got some bonus interview stuff with Jenn Alva, artist and bass player from Girl in a Coma. We talk bananas, a mutual friend, and her sense of humor.    My favorite tattoo artist, Tara Quinn and I started recording way before what ended up on the podcast episode. We talk about Medina Valley High School, a dead body, Action Figures, Sci-fi, her family, and our old neighborhood.    One of the coolest things I did this season was attend the Alamo City ComicCon and I got to meet the only person that stretches themselves out even more than I do, Joseph Devine. After that, I've also included the other interview from the Con, with Justice in the Capitol. These guys run a live podcast on Mixler that's all about Tokusatsu. Here are both interviews that I previously released on our ComicCon episode, #21.    Finally, we've got our music portion of the podcast. My favorite thing about this season was getting to have bands play private concerts for me and bringing them to you. First up, we've got Tera Ferna's Matthew Charles and Brandon Kent playing two previously unreleased songs, "Volition" and "Too Far To See”.    The next two songs are from The Black Market Club's episode, #30. They played "Don Pablo” which is previously unreleased and “Back To Chicago” off of their EP “Faults and Fractures”.     Last but not least, we were just given Donella Drives new mix of their song “Minus Marley” which features their brand new singer, Ella Macias. I totally dig it and can hear quite a bit of potential from Ella. Look for an interview with Donella Drive in the beginning of season 2 of the 210 Local Media Podcast.    One last announcement, 210 Local Media is now officially a podcast network! Look for our new partner podcast, It's a Guy Thing Podcast coming soon at www.itsaguythingpodcast.com .
