ScreenUK is a free discovery platform celebrating the very best of UK-produced film, television, animation and gaming and sharing it with audiences around the world. ScreenUK is the go-to place to discover your next favorite movie, show, or game and features tons of exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews and all the info you need to find out how and where to watch or play your newest obsessions, wherever you are in the world. Make ScreenUK.org your next stop. The film that launched the careers of a Star Wars star, a Doctor, and even a DC superhero (albeit a deep cut)! Yes, that's right, we're talking about cult classic, Attack the Block, this week. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure yet (and seriously, this movie is a blast, so if you haven't seen it, go check it out right now!), Attack the Block is a 2011 science fiction/horror film written and directed by Joe Cornish and starring future Star Wars franchise hero John Boyega and historic Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker. The film follows a group of teenagers living in a South London housing estate who defend their neighborhood from an alien invasion. So what flies and what doesn't? Well, these aliens have come from the outer reaches of space and crash-landed on Earth, with the females spreading their pheromones and attracting a horde of ferocious males from across the solar system to Earth, so Hakeem takes a look at everything from the basic concept of pheromones to how the sun's magnetic field allows for things like “solar sailing” to take place. Tamara unpacks not only the aliens themselves, but also gives everyone some background info on how the unique look of these terrifying creatures was realized onscreen. And that's only the beginning of the fun in our latest episode! Remember that you can join in on the conversation in the comments on our YouTube page, so be sure to like, subscribe, and come back for more!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Here are a few recommendations!Pheromones“Pheromones are chemistry and biology. Chemistry and biology have something in them that physics doesn't have. Do you know what that is? Nasty! Bodily fluids and things like that.”‘Oumuamua“We know it came from outside of our solar system, for one reason only: the speed at which it was moving.”Oort cloud“There is allegedly a spherical distribution of comets called the Oort cloud that surrounds the solar system, so sometimes comets do come in from over the poles of the sun or something like that, so it's not in the plane of the orbit.”Parker Solar Probe“As far as traveling through space on solar rays, that is something that can actually be done. There's different forms of propulsion. There's electric sail propulsion. You can have a physical sail. You can have an electric sail, where you create an electric field, and because the particles streaming away from the sun and other stars are electrically charged you can get a thrust out of that. Or you can have a magnetic sail [which] is pretty clever.”Attack the Block's Aliens Were Just as Terrifying Behind the ScenesTamara gives everyone some info on alien performer Terry Notary but there's all kinds of additional fun info here for you to help fill in the blanks on just what made these creatures so convincingly scary.SUGGESTED VIEWINGAttack the Block is so much fun very much because of the unique sensibility of writer/director Joe Cornish. And first of all, we must once again ask, if you haven't seen Attack the Block yet, what are you waiting for? This movie is a treasure! Go watch!Cornish wrote (along with Edgar Wright and Stephen Moffat) 2011's criminally-underrated The Adventures of TinTin film (where's the trilogy we were promised?!?) But you can also see his influence in Marvel Studios' first Ant-Man movie (which he helped write) and Netflix's sadly gone-after-one-season Lockwood & Co. FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! Director Ron Howard was hiring Cirque gymnasts for the film, and after sufficiently impressing Howard, Terry was offered the job of teaching all the actors how to move. Notary followed this new career path to Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, for which he prepared by studying ape movements at the LA County Zoo. For years, George MacKay has been one of the most fascinating and versatile actors working out of the U.K. Having made his acting debut in 2003, in P. J. Hogan's magnificent adaptation of "Peter Pan," MacKay quickly went on to give diverse, but invariably gripping performances in films such as "Defiance," "The Thief Lord," "The Boys are Back," and "Private Peaceful," all before he turned 20. More recently, MacKay electrified the screen with two top-tier performances in 2019 and 2020, first as Lance Corporal Schofield in Sam Mendes' groundbreaking "1917," and then as Ned Kelly in Justin Kurzel's Australian Western "True History of the Kelly Gang." MacKay's latest project, Nathalie Biancheri's "Wolf," sees the actor play Jacob, a boy who believes himself to be the titular animal, contending with his own visions and beliefs at the same time that he receives psychiatric treatment for his condition. "Wolf" is a stunning, deeply unique film with a central performance from MacKay that allows him to dive deep into his craft, as he howls and prowls around while being torn back and forth between his fantasy wilderness and the cold reality of the clinic that is treating him. MacKay sat down with us to talk about “Wolf” and the ways in which he inhabited Jacob. "Over the last few years, so much socially and personally is being redefined by us questioning how we've been in the past as a species, to each other, and how we speak about that," said MacKay. "We look to animals because I think, at the end of the day, so much of what we're kind of discussing at the minute are articulations of very primal wants and needs to survive, very human versions of those primal desires or requirements." MacKay also discussed the artistic intent of the film, including its bold style and unconventional sensibilities, and why it was important that they be played straight. Finally, upon reflecting how "Wolf" aided his growth as a performer, MacKay added, "I realized [before] how much I'm in my head, how I've almost revered thoughts. I stand by that in certain times. I think everything needs a lot of thought and discussion, but sometimes the noise in your brain can get in the way. The calm of being in your body, being a little less in your thoughts, is something I'll definitely take away from [making 'Wolf']." During our conversation with George MacKay, we dive deep into all things "Wolf," including the moment MacKay found the physical cadence of Jacob, his experience working with movement coach Terry Notary, and more! Whether you call them titans or Kaiju, these two are iconic movie monsters. Godzilla has long reigned as the King of the Monsters, defeating all adversaries as both destroyer and protector. King Kong was unveiled as the Eighth Wonder of the World in the eponymous 1933 film, now he’s the last surviving member of his race, reigning over Skull Island. In this episode from the vault, we went exploring Legendary’s Monsterverse and their renditions of the giant ape and atomic lizard on the big screen, as well as Kong’s journey from the 1930’s to now. Since their debut, these creatures’ stories have been told and retold. Remade and reimagined. We look back to Kong’s beginnings and his various cinematic outings. King Kong (Merian C. Cooper, 1933) features legendary stop-motion animation from Willis O’Brien. King Kong (John Guillermin, 1976) stars Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange in a big budget Dino DeLaurentiis production that relies more heavily on a man in a suit for its effects. King Kong (Peter Jackson, 2005) carves out a performance from motion capture and CG-animation. We also touch on Mighty Joe Young (Ron Underwood, 1998) as well as his first title fight in King Kong vs. Godzilla (Ishiro Honda, 1962). In the first American attempt since Godzilla (Roland Emmerich, 1998) is realised more closely to his Japanese heyday outings. He looms large and defeats the MUTOs to protect humanity in Godzilla (Gareth Edwards, 2014). When he’s brought back, the roster of titans expands as we’re introduced to Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (Michael Dougherty, 2019). The godlike being stares down the opposition and obliterates them in epic fashion. The performance capture of these larger than life creatures are carried through the films by T.J. Storm as Godzilla and both Terry Notary and Toby Kebbell contributing to Kong and are big factor as to why they’re so fun to watch. Others being the spectacle in scale, cinematography, choreography and action, with Skull Island excelling in its vivid colour palette too. Not all the humans are forgettable, we do highlight our favourite characters. Plus we touch briefly on Shin Godzilla (Hideaki Anno, 2016) and Rampage (Brad Peyton, 2018). Finally, we theorise about how Godzilla and Kong will fare in the match-up teased at the time. You can tune in next week to hear what we thought of Godzilla vs Kong (Adam Wingard, 2021). Hi everyone! Andrew’s taking the helm for today’s Matinee Monday, with a review from the debut offering from the recently renamed 20th Century Studios. Like that Fox brand might be toxic or something. Anyway, Andrew will be up in a minute with his review of THE CALL OF THE WILD. Don’t miss Andrew’s other recent reviews for BLISS (Episode #723), SCHOOL’S OUT (Episode #716), and COME TO DADDY (Episode #709). None of those are family films, by the way. Not even COME TO DADDY. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our good friends at the Book of Lies Podcast. Here we go! ///// > ///// Hello film fans! Andrew here, pinch-hitting today with... a Disney film. Don’t worry, I’ll be back on Friday with my usual dose of death and destruction. One of the perks to being an accredited film critic (well, actually, the only perk) is access to check out the occasional film at a press-screening or through a screener link or on DVD during awards season. Somehow, I didn’t even know of the existence of today’s film until I got my invite to go check it out at arguably Austin’s dingiest theater - remarkable, considering the budget was in the $150M range. What secured my RSVP was the ability to bring along my three kids and gauge their response to a film that has been marketed to both parents and children. Today’s movie is THE CALL OF THE WILD (2020), with a screenplay by Michael Green based on the Jack London novel, directed by Chris Sanders. THE CALL OF THE WILD tells the story of Buck, a St. Bernard / Scotch Collie mix and his adventures in the late 19th Century. After Buck is abducted from his mischievous life on a bucolic California estate, he’s shipped by boat up to the Yukon territory on the US-Canadian border. Buck is soon acquired by a kind couple in charge of delivering mail to the remote Alaskan town of Skagway. At first a reluctant member of a sled dog team, Buck begins to learn life lessons, as all dogs do, maturing and gaining confidence along the way. And I haven’t even gotten to the Harrison Ford part yet. Director Chris Sanders has three other directorial efforts to his name, all of which are animated - LILO & STITCH, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and THE CROODS. This makes a ton of sense after the fact as the film is live action except for the dogs and a few other animals you meet along the way. The sequences that rely heavily on the animals feel very much like a cartoon, albeit a well-crafted one, though thankfully none of the animals talk or provide the narration. Harrison Ford steps into the narrator role and does excellent work. Ford is always such a curmudgeon in real life that I was worried the whole film would feel like he was just showing up for a Disney payday, but his voice feels genuine, keeping the larger narrative aloft until his on-camera role expands in the second half of the picture. Dan Stevens and Karen Gillan appear as well, but feel miscast as the film’s villains. Bradley Whitford kicks off the story as Buck’s original owner in another strange bit of casting, putting a noteworthy actor in a role that barely outlasts the film’s credits. And the unsung hero is motion-capture actor Terry Notary who apparently stood in for Buck. I didn’t learn this until after the film and it’s certainly not apparent during the viewing, but hey, that’s good work if you can get it. One minor complaint is that the story itself feels more episodic rather than having a traditional three-act structure. Maybe it’s just because we are in the age of peak TV, but the whole thing might have worked better as 6-episode Disney+ series. Almost a full hour goes by before Buck inevitably hooks up with Ford’s John Thornton and it feels like everything prior is just a lead-up to this point. The primary problem with THE CALL OF THE WILD is that it tries too hard to be everything to everyone. The source material is not as light-hearted as the film would have you believe. The film features a number of violent scenes, even including some ambiguous allusions to death, though it sands down the corners to deliver the sanitized Disney version that audiences expect. (Incidentally, I have heard the live-action MULAN remake will be PG-13 and I am curious to see what that means for both the film itself as well as the box office). What did not work for me, for at least the first hour, was the juxtaposition of a rugged survival tale with humanized dogs that are uncannily expressive. I get that much of what was required of the dogs in this film probably could not have been done with actual animals, but it feels like the CGI went one step too far, making Buck in particular feel more like a cartoon animal living in the real world. What makes THE CALL OF THE WILD fantastic? THE CALL OF THE WILD is not afraid to take its time. There are just enough action scenes to keep the kids engaged and plenty of slapstick comedy, but there are also more moments of reflection (quiet or narrated) than you’re used to seeing a modern family film. My viewing experience recalled how I felt watching family adventure films growing up in the 1980s, like THE JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN, CHEETAH, or the made-for-tv movie STONE FOX. I really enjoyed experiencing this one with my kids, which has to be a much better sit than subjecting them to SONIC THE HEDGEHOG or the critically-derided DOOLITTLE. THE CALL OF THE WILD is a throwback family film that provides ample, if not particularly memorable, entertainment for all ages. Fans of adventure films that merge live action and CGI-animation such as THE JUNGLE BOOK or PETE’S DRAGON will enjoy this film. Rotten Tomatoes: 70% Metacritic: 53 One Movie Punch: 7.6/10 THE CALL OF THE WILD (2020) is rated PG and is playing in theaters. Come back on Friday and we’ll get back to the wild ways of Fantastic Fest with JALLIKATTU. In a rural Indian village, a buffalo has broken loose, damaging the town while mobs of men begin to form, seeking to restore order. You’ve seen movies with every other kind of killer animal, so why not a buffalo! See you then.

Jason did all of the motion capture for the Gorilla, George! Jason was such an upbeat and excited person, it was our honor to have him on the show! It took Jason a full SIX months of preparation: studying gorillas' physicality, their psyche, their modes of both vocal and non-vocal communication, and most importantly, training on ape "arm extensions"  under the tutelage of King Kong himself, Terry Notary (top in the field) perfecting the art of a character enhanced by motion capture. He gives us a lot of insight into his work with Terry, plus his work in the motion capture field, as this was his first time doing motion capture! Our conversation took an awesome turn, when Jason started speaking about Gorilla conservation! During his time with them, he absolutely fell in love. He gives us some sad statistics about the state of Gorilla's in nature, and we talk a little bit about what we can do as humans! Today on The Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Jason Liles of Rampage. Before production began on Rampage  in April of 2017, 6'9" Jason Liles dedicated himself to a full 6 months of preparation: studying gorillas' physicality, their psyche, their modes of both vocal and non-vocal communication, and training on ape "arm extensions" in the Santa Monica Mountains at the hand of King Kong himself, Terry Notary (top in the field) perfecting the art of a character enhanced by motion capture. It was immediate when Jason became the frontrunner for the incredibly demanding role of 'George,' best friend to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's primatologist 'Davis Okoye' in Rampage, that the studio stop looking. Jason was the one and only choice for the role coming to the attention of the producers via Rick Baker whom he worked with in Men in Black III  creating a niche and led to numerous roles. In fact, MIB III launched Jason Liles into a dozen movies working side by side with the most brilliant in feature film paving the way to this year's ultimate role opposite Dwayne Johnson as 'George' in Rampage (Warner Bros.). In the film, Johnson portrays a primatologist who keeps people at a distance, but shares a bond with Jason's character, 'George,' a silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth.

Our guest, Swedish director/writer Ruben Östlund, is the newly crowned winner of the Cannes Palme d’Or for his latest film "The Square", which is described as a poignant satirical drama reflecting our times. The suspenseful satire tackles the Swedish art scene, politics, media, community and national identity. The film stars Danish actor Claes Bang, Elizabeth Moss, Dominic West and motion capture artist Terry Notary, who gives a mesmerizing performance as the “ape-man” during a black-tie museum dinner. Östlund’s previous film "Force Majeure" won him the Jury Prize at Canne in 2014 and became a huge international hit. It’s about a father who runs away from danger instead of protecting his family and the emotional aftermath. The situation brings up the expectations of manliness and the uncomfortable humor of life itself. It was recently announced that "The Square" will represent Sweden at the 2018 Academy Awards, and we couldn’t be prouder to welcome its writer/director Ruben Östlund.
