The Denver Nuggets lost to the LA Lakers on Friday night but even worse, their continued slide into Paul Westhead era defensive sukeration continued unabated. Who is the problem? Is it head coach Michael Malone? Is it Nikola Jokic? Is it Bones? Or is this a combination of absolutely everything including the lack of Michaep Porter Junior? Jeff attempts to answer that question.Enjoy the show!

Legendary Coach Paul Westhead discusses his role in the HBO series Winning Time and predicts what will happen to him next season
Sometimes coaches dream up the best basketball schemes in the most unlikely locations, like when Steve Kerr and Bruce Fraser plotted out the Golden State Warriors' motion-driven system at an airport wine bar. In the case of Paul Westhead's speed game - a devastating combo of continual fast break offense and pressing defense - it all came together when he coached Puerto Rico players during summers off from his main role at LaSalle University in the 70s. Westhead was later named head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers after his friend Jack McKinney fell off his bike and sustained a TBI. After making some inspired adjustments following Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's Finals injury, Westhead guided the Lakers to the NBA title in six games against Dr. J's Sixers, with Magic Johnson winning MVP in his rookie season. Westhead went on to perfect his “shoot in 5 seconds or less” approach - aka “The System” at Loyola Marymount University, where the duo of Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble hung 122 points per game on their opponents. In this episode, Paul shares: How his college coach Dr. Jack Ramsay helped him get into coachingWhy he played Magic at center in the Finals How Puerto Rico basketball and Old Dominion coach Sonny Allen shaped The SystemWhy he's always promised to blow his new team's socks offWhat legacy Hank Gathers left and why he still remembers the free throw Bo Kimble took in his honorLearn more about Paul's basketball journey in his book Speed Game: My Fast Times in Basketball and follow him on Twitter.

How in the heck did Paul Westhead go from coaching Cheltenham High School to leading Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers to the 1980 NBA title?! The story is symbolic of the strength of Philadelphia's deep-rooted basketball fraternity. And while Westhead's stint with the Lakers was relatively short, in many ways it was only the beginning of a long coaching career highlighted by stops at Loyola-Marymount, where he implemented an innovative system with Philadelphia natives Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble, and a WNBA championship run with the Phoenix Mercury. A few weeks removed from his 83rd birthday, Westhead reflects on a lifetime in hoops, and discusses the new HBO show 'Winning Time,' in which he's portrayed by actor Jason Segel. There weren't a lot of Jews involved with the "Showtime" Los Angeles Lakers of the 1980s. But there was Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and coaches Paul Westhead and Pat Riley, and all these big characters and iconic stories are coming to TV in a new show, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, debuting March 6, 2022, on HBO Max (Crave for Canadians). Aside from a handful of Jewish actors involved—notably Adrien Brody and Jason Segal as coaches Riley and Westhead, respectively—the real Judaism comes behind the scenes. The show's creators, Jim Hecht and Max Borenstein, are both Jewish, as is the man who wrote the book on which the show is based. Jeff Pearlman is a veteran sportswriter who's written several books that haven't been turned into TV shows, as well as one, now, that has. He joins for a lengthy interview about his book, his writing process and, to settle an argument with his mother, his bar mitzvah. What better way to start off our list of guests for season 2 than this one?! We got a piece of basketball history and hoops nostalgia in the house today. Jeff Fryer joins us to share his basketball journey and we are blessed to have him.Loyola Marymount University brought so much excitement to the college hoops scene from 1986-1990. Jeff Fryer was a huge part their success playing alongside Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers in that legendary, fast-paced offense of Paul Westhead where they put up an NCAA record of 122.4 points per game. Fryer could light it up in hurry. In fact, he still holds the NCAA tournament record for most 3-point field goals in a game (11) against the defending champ Michigan Wolverines. He is also the former NCAA All-Time career leader in 3-point field goals made (363). Any basketball junkie remembers his playing days at LMU, but we also got to learn about the draft process, playing overseas, coaching, remembering Hank Gathers, and the important role that his faith has played up to this point.BIG thanks to Jeff Fryer. We are so honored to have this opportunity to pick his brain, hear his story, and learn more about this college team that had one of the most impressive and emotional tournament runs of all time. Faith can take you far in life and we love to see that it has continued to take Jeff down a path where he can give back. Paul Westhead’s innovative basketball philosophy, known as “The System,” produced one of the most high octane teams seen in college basketball and an unforgettable run to the NCAA tournament Elite Eight. David Arseneault Jr., The Grinnell System Guest: David Arseneault Jr., Grinnell Pioneers’ Head Men’s Basketball Coach David Arseneault Jr. is the NCAA D3 Grinnell Pioneers’ head men’s basketball coach, taking over duties from his father, David Arseneault. The elder Arseneault, who created the Grinnell system, retired in June 2018. The Grinnell System, sometimes referred to as The System, is a fast-tempo style of basketball. It is a variation of the run-and-gun system popularized by coach Paul Westhead at Loyola Marymount University in the early 1980s. The Grinnell System relies on shooting three-point field goals, applying constant pressure with a full-court press, and substituting players frequently. Arseneault Jr., who previously played and coached at Grinnell, returned to Grinnell in 2017-18 after two seasons leading the Reno Bighorns, the NBA D-League affiliate of the Sacramento Kings. During his time with Reno, the Bighorns won the Western Conference with a 33-17 mark, claimed the Pacific Division title and set a D-League record for offensive efficiency. Arseneault Jr. was named Coach of the Year by SB Nation. Over a two-season span, the Bighorns posted a 53-47 record and had six players called up to the NBA. They led the league in numerous categories, including points per game, 3-point field goals, 3-point percentage, assists per game and assist-turnover ratio. Hit the court, fools! 30 for 30s are back! Drew and Bob are now far enough into the 30 for 30s to notice a pattern. This is our second "gone too soon" athlete story regarding the tragedy of Hank Gathers, but it's also about Paul Westhead and his run and gun coaching style called "The System". We discussed Bill Couturie's "Guru of Go", and we cannot wait to get deeper into these 30 for 30s because there are way too many. Also, we bring back the controversial and genius "pre-emptive ads". Last time Bob didn't realize Jared Fogle got locked up for some bad things, and Subway and Angela got pretty upset with him. Fortunately for society, and revolutionary marketing strategies, Bob has fixed it all. It's gonna be A SLAM DUNK! ((waits for applause...........receives none.)) Apologies to William Shakespeare. We also dig into brief pro coaching stints for Kevin McHale, Andy Phillip, Earl Lloyd, Mike Brown, Chick Reise, John McLendon, Don Delaney, Bruce Hale, Ed Sadowski, Paul Westhead, Byron Scott, Mike Farmer, Sidney Lowe, Cotton Fitzsimmons and Roger Potter. When Kelly Graves took over the helm of the Oregon women’s basketball program, he had a lot of work to do. Sure, Nike is ever present and provides the team with the latest and greatest in apparel and equipment, but previous coach Paul Westhead’s run and gun style left a program with only a modicum of success, and a culture that did not emphasize fundamentals and defense. Three years in to the Graves era, and the Ducks are entering the final weekend of the regular season with an 18-10 overall record (8-8 in conference), tied with Arizona State for fifth in the very strong Pac-12 and in the NCAA tournament per the latest ESPN bracketology. Perhaps most impressive about Oregon’s success is the fact this team is so young. They start three freshmen, a sophomore, and a junior. The combination of post Ruthy Hebard and point guard Sabrina Ionescu may be the best freshman duo in the country. Hebard, from Alaska, leads the team in scoring (14.9 per game), rebounding (8.6 per game), and field goal percentage (64.9 percent). Ionescu is second in scoring (13.9 per game), second in rebounding (7.0 per game), and first in assists (5.7 per game), plus has registered four triple-doubles already this year. As Graves points out in this week’s Dishin & Swishin podcast, consider that Ionescu is playing in a conference absolutely loaded with quality point guards night after night, including Kelsey Plum (Washington), Sydney Wiese (Oregon State), Jordin Canada (UCLA), and Kennedy Leonard (Colorado). It makes her accomplishments all the more impressive. This weekend Oregon hosts Cal on Friday and Stanford on Sunday. Tournament seedings are in play for all of the top six teams in the conference. Stanford is tied with Oregon State for first, one game ahead of Washington. UCLA seems locked in to the four spot, and Arizona State will duel with Oregon for five and six. No matter what happens this weekend, the “Spectacle in Seattle” as Graves c
Just a little over a year after winning an NBA championship in his rookie year, Magic Johnson publicly demanded a trade from the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 18, 1981. In the latest episode of the Over and Back Classic NBA Podcast, Jason Mann and Rich Kraetsch discuss what led up to the trade demand, the feud between Magic and Lakers coach Paul Westhead, how Johnson was vilified by fans and media during the time, and how the situation was resolved. We talk about Magic and new Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss helping establish Showtime in L.A., how their close relationship upset the other Lakers players, how Westhead took over for Showtime architect Jack McKinney, the Lakers winning the 1980 championship, a disappointing 1981 season and playoff loss to the Rockets, Johnson’s 25-year, $25 million contract, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar seeking a trade to New York, how things went sour between Johnson and Westhead, the coach finally being fired, massive confusion between Buss, Jerry West and Pat Riley over who exactly would be the next coach, how Johnson would be reviled for a time before leading the Lakers to another championship, and how Westhead completely changed his style and become known as the Guru of Go. Veteran broadcaster of more than 50 Michael Jordan rookie games (1984-85), Bill Hazen. Hazen previously appeared on the finale of our #NB85 series. However, that was an edited-down version, relating solely to the 1985 Chicago Bulls. This is the entire conversation, covering Bill's whole career, to date. Hazen was born and raised in Chicago. We briefly discuss the city's history of professional basketball; leading to the expansion Bulls' entry, in the NBA's 1966-67 season. Bill discusses his career in broadcasting. His journey began in Columbus, Indiana - working as a disc-jockey and producing commercials - before he landed "the break of a lifetime" and moved to Milwaukee, becoming Sports Director for WISN Radio. This also gave Bill the opportunity to call play-by-play for the Marquette Golden Eagles, surrounded by luminaries Al McGuire, Hank Raymonds and Rick Majerus. Later, Bill took a job as a sports broadcaster and talk-show host, at Houston's KTRH. As circumstance would have it, when the talk show was not on the air, the station broadcast Houston Rockets games. Bill then worked play-by-play on TV games, for the Rockets' late-1970s teams, calling names like Moses Malone, John Lucas and Rudy Tomjanovich, to name a few. You'll hear some amazing accounts of Michael Jordan's first season in the NBA. Hazen was in attendance at Angel Guardian Gym - the Bulls' practice facility for Jordan's rookie season - he watched Michael shake hands with new coach, Kevin Loughery, before training camp had even commenced. We reminisce about some of the great moments during Jordan's first season as a pro, including this remarkable piece of commentary that Bill exclaimed, in November, 1984. Another stellar piece of Bill's commentary, was later used in the iconic advertising campaign, 'America's Game / NBA Action: It's FANtastic'. We also discuss Bill's early use of computer technology to prepare for games and the dismantling of numerous personnel - coaches, executives and broadcasters - following the Bulls' 1985 season. In the mid-1990s, Bill worked for ESPN International, recording live audio to accompany 'Game of the Week' packages, distributed overseas. Also at this time, Bill called games for the NFL and produced live audio for the 1995 MLB World Series. We conclude our wide-ranging conversation, chatting about Bill's production company. The most prominent people mentioned in this episode, include: Michael Jordan, Kevin Loughery, Johnny Red Kerr, Paul Westhead, Orlando Woolridge, Jerry Sloan, Sidney Moncrief, Jawann Oldham, Dave Corzine, Rod Thorn & Vernon Maxwell. We consider if Jack Watts has found his true calling as a coach, and if the Dees are over young gun prodigies just as they've found a legit candidate. Sydney sink the boots into a disappointing Crows side, who failed to fire for Tex's 100th. Brenton tries out the Goodes dance on a couple of famous Melbourne D-Floors. Norf have a 10 goal win over Carlton. I'm sure something else happened in that game, but like you I was watching the battle of the Coasts. We have a battle of the coasts. Port have a much needed win with some stars coming good, while we back the Saints for one or two more fan boosting wins before the seasons done. The Bombers get bent over for a doggystle rogering. And GWS and Freo round out our weekend of crepe umpiring decisions. Oh yeah, in case the umpires couldn't quite hear Leon Cameron... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
