To paraphrase Dr. Winston O'Boogie (John Lennon speaking of Chuck Berry and the art of rock and roll) – if you want to call solo bass by another name…call it… Michael Manring! A fretless virtuoso, Manring brings the instrument to places hitherto unknown, unexplored, and untried – until now. Working his virtuosity on the fretless with a myriad of tonal and textural effects and alternative tunings, Manring is a genre unto himself. Self-effacing, gracious, insightful, humble, and humorous are just a few of the adjectives to describe this conversation with Mr. “Manthing.”Michael Manring Playlist

Welcome to episode #287 of dHarmic Evolution Join me as we take a ride today from Nashville to Pennsylvania with the musician, recording and performing artist, composer, educator, and finger-style guitar connoisseur, Tim Farrell. Growing up jamming with friends and playing rock music, Tim eventually studied classical guitar, shifting from jazz. His eyes and ears were opened to everything that one can do, not only by playing the rhythm and lead but also melodies, bass line, and open strings, the list is endless! He then applied everything he learned from classical to steel-string guitar and combined the techniques and tones available to steel-string. Realizing that this was not just about playing a chord, but telling a story which Tim believes was one of the best compliments he received when he became the first-ever instrumentalist to play at a venue in Florida and someone quoted to him that “your story is in the music”. Tim's music has shades of Michael Hedges; it's like there is practically no limit to what he can do with his imagination on the way he approaches even the tuning of the guitar. Tim, for the most time, has been using standard tuning when he came across alternate tuning with Little Martha by Leo Kottke. He figured out that he was using open E tuning and heard the potentials that open E created and intensely explored it, in fact, he keeps a guitar on hand with that definitive tuning. Coping with the pandemic With the current situation, Tim believes that the biggest change was not being able to play and perform his music to a larger crowd. While keeping himself active doing walks, yoga, and taking care of his crops, Tim is streaming concerts every other Sunday. He also has a scheduled online concert and workshop at the Cooperage in Pennsylvania. His concerts with his trio called StringSongs - playing alongside Michael Manring and Christopher Garcia are also currently canceled. StringSongs StringSongs was formed when Tim first met Michael on a gig and did some recording together. Eventually, they decided to make it formal, and initially joined by the Grammy-winning piano player and producer, Pat Robinson but later replaced by Christopher due to conflicts in schedule. Tim together with Michael and his fretless bass, and Christopher using a very exotic percussion - they all blend, just perfectly fit, and their music is very unique. What's next for Tim? Watch out for the new solo album that he is working on. And StringSongs – with Michael and Christopher where they are now planning for the recording and rehearsals even during this time of pandemic to come up with new projects Streaming and Music Industry In this confusing time where CDs are going away, vinyl making a comeback, where consumers love streaming and artists hate it. Tim, who is also an educator, is continuously sharing his music and develops workshops online and onsite, performs at senior centers and performing art centers. He believes that this is an eye-opener for people to see that there are so many unexpected things that can be done with an acoustic guitar aside from strumming chords or playing solo. To know more about Tim Farrell's music and everything that he does, you can support him by playing his music through streaming services, ordering his CDs through his website, supporting him on his online live concerts. Because It is an entire orchestra, it's not just by playing a chord…and it just brings out so much in the story of what's being played And they said to me afterward, you don't need the words, your story is in the music. A lot of people expect that you will either be strumming chords or playing a solo, and they don't realize you can do these other things together. It's phenomenal to see it open people's eyes and ears up. I think the more your style of playing is out there, the better that songwriters will continue to develop songs in general. We will get better music because it incorporates so much imagination and so much beauty into the songs. He was in testament from the time he was a teenager into his early 20s and then did some session work with people like the incredible bassists like Stu Hamm and Michael Manring. He also did some stuff with the band Savatage and eventually moved to NYC to study at the New School and pursue his desire to play jazz. And from there he started the Alex Skolnick Trio and they play cool jazz-influenced versions of classic rock and metal tunes as well as original music. Eventually, he made his way back to Testament and now he exists in two musical worlds.Alex is a friend of mine and we had a great chat about his origins, where he grew up, what drew him to jazz, the challenges of being a well-known musician expressing their political views on social media, and gives some observations, some insight and his very intelligent and measured take on the state of things.

Rupert Wates was born in London and studied at Oxford University. He has been a full time songwriter since the late 1990s, when he signed a publishing contract with Eaton Music Limited. In London he worked with some of the best performers in the city. Moving in 2001 to Paris, Wates formed his own quartet and began playing live regularly. In fall 2006 he came to the US. He is now based in New York City and Colorado. Since coming to the US, he has won more than 40 songwriting and performing awards (www.rupertwatesmusic.com/awards).His music is an eclectic mix of acoustic, melodic art/folk, with flavors of jazz, vaudeville and cabaret. He has released nine solo CDs. They have received outstanding reviews in the international online press and tracks from them have been played on radio all over the world. In addition, Wates' songs have been covered by other artists in the UK, Canada and the US. Two full length tribute CDs to his material have been recorded: 'Crazy Puzzle' (2015) by Nashville-based performer Roxie Rogers, and 'Wide Open Heart' (July 2017) by Los Angeles vocalist Susan Kohler. Both these CDs were initiated and funded entirely by the artists themselves, and comprise exclusively songs taken from Rupert Wates' back catalog. Over 20 recordings featuring Wates's songs by other artists were made in 2016, and more are scheduled for 2017 (full list at www.rupertwatesmusic.com/covers). In 2010 Wates released Joe's Café, an album of 15 original songs based on true stories, each interpreted by a different vocalist, retelling the stories of ordinary American people. Through them we trace the story of America itself: through two world wars, the Dust Bowl depression, Vietnam and the struggle for Civil Rights, all the way to the present day. Recorded live in the studio in a single weekend, the album's warm sound evokes the welcoming atmosphere of an all-night café, where friends gather to share their stories. Featured virtuoso musicians on the recording include Darol Anger on violin and Michael Manring on bass.Joe's Café has been presented very successfully at Festivals throughout North America, and in other venues in New York City and in the southeastern United States. The show won Best Music Revue in the 2010 San Francisco Fringe Festival. More information about Joe's Cafe is at www.bitemusiclimited.com. In 2014, Wates joined forces with Toronto-based virtuoso pianist Bartosz Hadala to form a piano/guitar duo called The Nightwatchers (www.thenightwatchers.com). The duo tour Canada and Europe regularly. In March 2015 they recorded and released a debut CD entitled The Nightwatchers, featuring some of the standout songs of Wates' extensive catalog. Rupert Wates averages 120 live shows every year, in front of audiences totaling more than 3,500, in acoustic venues in every state in America, in Canada and in Europe. He performs sometimes alone, sometimes with his trio or his quartet. He prefers smaller listening rooms where the audience is up close and the emphasis is on the music. He was voted an Artist Of The Year in both 2013 and 2016 by the international house concert network Concerts In Your Home (www.concertsinyourhome.com), and for five years running he has been the most booked performer on their database of several hundred artists. In 2018, Wates was a Finalist in the Kerrville New Folk Song Contest, and an Emerging Artist at Falconridge Folk Festival. Despite Wates' British background, and underpinning the universality of his music's appeal, Folk And Acoustic Music Exchange has called him "a prime figure in American music'' (www.acousticmusic.com) and goes on: "This is one gifted sonofabitch... If you're not hip to this guy yet you're missing out."Audiences everywhere respond to Wates' brand of melodic art/folk—haunting songs that ring true.

Michael Manring is one of THE most passionate players I’ve ever met, and in fact, passion is the driving factor in pretty much everything he does. Stories about leaving Berklee early - with their blessing… playing with Henry Kaiser, Michael Hedges, Alex Skolnick… the dark side of touring solo all over the world, the upside of being a misfit, integrity, compassion, responsibility… becoming more accepting, his obsessions, and much more. Incredibly honest interview with a very warm soul. In a world where people say they are “different,” Michael is truly a different player. The way he plays bass, and the way he hears bass guitar is unlike anyone I’ve ever seen or heard. A solo artist who’d released 7 solo LPs of his own, played with Michael Hedges for years, was part of the Wyndham Hill house band, and has played on hundreds of stages all over the world and on hundreds of records. In every generation, there is one…or maybe two bassist that changes the rules and for that matter the whole concept of what can be done on and with a bass guitar. The late great Jaco Pastorius was one of the masters of bass guitar that expanded the world of bass guitar with his astounding ability and talent. However, it was his student that took the bass to new heights and along with Joe Zon designed one of the finest and most unique bass instruments on the planet…The Zon Hyperbass, Michaels’ signature instrument. With it he continues to stretch the very boundaries of the bassists’ realm. Michael has had and continues to have an outstanding career having performed and collaborated with the very finest musicians in the world. He has performed every type of music from New Age to Rock and Jazz to Fusion. His solo work has been some of the most innovative music ever composed for bass guitar including a work entitled “ My Three Moons” off his album “Thonk” where he simultaneously plays three basses at once with remarkable prowess. We have included a link to the video of him performing this feat on our web site at www.audiosmaximus.com. In this episode of the this episode of  The Tour Bus Music Show we sit down with Michael for an in depth interview where we discuss his career and experiences such as his friendship and collaboration the late acoustic guitar master and performer Michael Hedges. We’ll also get inside his head where he shares with us his unique perspective on the bass guitar, life in general and what helped contribute to making him the remarkable bassist he is today. In a personal note, I am a bassist myself (T. Mic), Michael Manring has been one of my personal favorite bassists for many years and has had a profound influence on my own playing style. It was a privilege and honor to conduct this interview and I wish to extend my personal thanks to Michael Manring for taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk with me for this interview. In this episode of The Tour Bus Music Show on the Tales From The Back Of The Bus we are going to get funky in an interview with New Orleans/Gonzales, LA based bassist extraordinaire ,George Porter, Jr. (www.georgeporterjr.com) (www.funkymeters.com), To say that we’re going to get funky in retrospect is not quite correct because it is hard to pigeon-hole a man of Mr. Porter, Jr.’s  talent into just one genre of music. He has, in fact, not only is he a founding member of The world famous “Original” Meter’s but played just about every type of music there is on the side of some of the biggest names in the music industry as well as having as exception solo career as a vocalist, guitarist, and bassist in his own right. To say he is still in demand is to put it mildly. At 63 years young, George’s schedule performing with his four, mind you that’s four, primary bands, his “Solo” shows and all of the gigs he still performs with various other bands and artists would leave a younger bassist with his head spinning. He has recorded on to many albums to count with other great artists. Busy? Yes – In Demand? Yes – Exceptionally Talented? A Resounding Yes – Someone You Need To See and Hear? Without A Doubt – On The Tour Bus? He is In The House!. Join us in a rare candid interview with George Porter, Jr. as we sit in the comfort of one of his beautiful home near the historic Houmas House Plantation and discuss his experiences of a lifetime playing all over the world as well as his beloved New Orleans with artists and bands such as The Meters, The Funky Meters, Dr. John, Irma Thomas, Professor Longhair, Robert Palmer, Patti LaBelle, Earl King, etc. We’ll also play several songs of his during the course of the show. This will also be the first in our series of “The Bottom Line” shows where we will be featuring some of the finest bassist in the music industry and the world for that matter. You can look for upcoming shows that will be featuring Michael Manring, Tony Franklin, and many more outstanding bass players.
