CLIMATE ACTION SHOWAPRIL 21ST 2025Produced by Vivien Langford "YOU ARE NOT ALONE"This episode of the Climate Action Show is part of the 89%Project, an initiative of the global journalism collaboration Covering Climate Now. The idea is that although between 80 and 89% of people worldwide want more effective climate ACTION they do not know that they are the majority. At the National Press Club Lunchin April, Greens Leader Adam Bandt reassured voters concerned about the climate crisis, by repeating... "You are not alone." Knowing that we are the majority could create a social tipping point that motivates action.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y69TTh__Npw With the headlines predicting minority goverment after the coming election, we explore what a hung parliament might achieve taking the urgency of the 89% to those who want to keep business as usual. 1.We will hear extracts from Allegra Spender's Climate speech in Parliament in May Allegra urges the government to get off fossil fuels, to stop opening new coal and gas projects, and to move as quickly as possible to renewables. She criticises the Labor Government's lack of a future gas strategy. She argues that their increase of fossil fuel projects creates more climate pollution and is a great disappointment for those who hoped for better.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTodgadZupg 2. Nick Ward standing for the Greens against Independent Allegra Spender in the Sydney Seat of WentworthOur community is facing significant challenges, from housing affordability to the pressing need for climate action. The scourge of racism and antisemitism will weigh heavily on this campaign. I believe in proactive, evidence-based solutions that address these issues head-on. I aim to bring a fresh perspective to Wentworth, advocating for Greens policies that reflect our shared values of fairness, sustainability, and community well-being. 3. Hannah Thomas standing for the Greens against the PM in the Sydney seat of GrayndlerIn 2022 she wrote in Independent Australia"Tuesday was also a heartbreaking day for the most vulnerable of individuals, children, standing up against the state in the courts of the colony. The Full Federal Court unanimously overturned an earlier finding that the Minister for the Environment has a duty to take reasonable care to avoid causing personal injury to children when deciding to approve a coal mine extension. The decision was essentially a green light to the Government and corporations to continue wrecking the climate in the face of overwhelming evidence that doing so would have catastrophic consequences for children. All of the evidence of the existential threat posed by climate change, and the fact that climate change is caused by fossil fuels, was accepted by the Court. And yet, the Minister for the Environment, who holds enormous power and discretion to perpetuate climate change, was found to owe nothing to the children whose futures are being irreparably harmed by climate change.I have no doubt that any number of legal experts would be able to defend each of these decisions based on the most sophisticated of technical arguments. But who cares about finessed points of law when ultimately, these decisions are all patently unjust to anyone with a functioning moral compass?" 4. Fun Fact! When your co-hosts Michael Bayliss and Mark Allen aren't making brand new episodes of PGAP, they are involved in many other worthy enterprises. Michael has just co-written a brand new report “Population and the Housing Crisis”. Mark performed his debut show at the Adelaide Fringe, “The Boomer and The Doomer.” Like most things we do, this all flew under the blip of the mainstream media radar, so we took the opportunity this episode to interview each other on our respective endeavours. It is not a secret to anyone now that Australia is going through a housing emergency. With Australia one of the most unaffordable countries in the world and with many of us in severe housing stress, this reality is very tangible. As housing stress is reaching its peak, our federal government is committing to one of the largest population growth policies in recent decades. The ‘official' stance is that the housing crisis is a supply based issue – just keep building more! There has been very little written on the ‘demand' side of the housing equation. Michael found himself one of the few who were brave or foolhardy enough to tackle this issue alongside co-author Dr. Jane O'Sullivan, with whom Sustainable Population Australia (https://population.org.au/) commissioned to write the report ‘The Housing Crisis is a Population Growth Crisis (https://population.org.au/briefing-notes/the-housing-crisis-is-a-population-growth-crisis/).' For this episode, Mark interviews Michael on the story behind the report and some of its key findings. (Boomer and the Doomer artwork by Mathisha Wahikala, Mick Thompson and Mark Allen). The housing emergency is just another in long line of emergencies – take your pick! Climate change, boiling oceans, ecological collapse, resource depletion and other fun things. It can be hard to maintain a poker face through this incessant din of human induced calamities, let alone find time to laugh. Michael interviews Mark's recent experiences in combining political satire with stand- up comedy in his debut show at the Adelaide fringe with comedian Eric Tinker (https://eric-tinker.com/). Combined, they performed the duo show ‘The Boomer and The Doomer' across three sold out nights in March. We muse on bringing humour into Degrowth conversations, which has been one of PGAP's key objectives since day one. Eric Tinker's 'MC Boomer rap' can be viewed here on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJ4KnRyVA80). (Ice cover artwork by Robert Smith and Mark Allen). We also take time in the episode to play a some choice tracks, 'Ice' (https://countingbackwards.bandcamp.com/track/ice) and 'A Deer Caught In The Highlights (https://shockoctopus.bandcamp.com/track/a-deer-caught-in-the-headlights-4)' from Mark and Michael's respective music projects, 'Counting Backwards (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FHV-lZ1GQk)' and 'Shock Octopus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q2tfC-6evo&t=5s)'. PGAP will soon be winding down for a short break between our fourth and fifth seasons. This is a perfect time to contact PGAP (https://pgap.fireside.fm/contact) to let us know your feedback and what themes or guests you would like us to explore next time around. For season 4 of Post-Growth Australia Podcast (PGAP), we will be highlighting some extraordinary work being done by extraordinary Western Australians, who are bucking the dominant narrative of exploitation on scale on an ecologically unique yet fragile part of the world. In this episode, we speak to Murray Gomm from Oranje Tractor (https://www.oranjetractor.com/), award winning organic, regenerative and carbon negative winery/small farm holding near Albany. Oranje Tractor certainly punches above its weight. It was the winner of the Gourmet Traveller Wine, Australia's Best Cellar Door Awards 2019. Oranje Tractor Farm was the winner of ACCI's Great Southern Business Awards for Environment and Sustainability in 2019 and was a Case Study for Circular Economy WA in 2022. It has been endorsed by Charles Massy (previous PGAP guest) and visited by then Prince Charles – now king (and not YET a PGAP guest). But how do you produce good quality wine, along with an impressive variety of fruits, nuts and vegetables, in a manner that improves soil integrity and sequesters more carbon than what is emitted? Murray Gomm shares what happens ‘behind the scenes' of how they do it and why Oranje Tractor is capturing the interest and imagination of so many people. Murray also provides some insight into the wider regenerative movement and the agricultural zeitgeist that is slowly beginning to influence new ways of approaching farming in the Great Southern of Western Australia. For the introduction and outro of this episode, Michael is joined by co-host Mark Allen as they pick each other's brain on topics such as: regenerative agriculture and permaculture; progress on the Asbestos campaign (as discussed in the last episode); and the result of SPA's 8 billion competition and the commentary from the mainstream press for 8 billion day, which was reached on the 15th of November. CLIMATE ACTION RADIO SHOWAUGUST 15TH 2022Produced by Vivien Langford RECALIBRATING THE MILITARY TO DISARM THE CLIMATE HYPERTHREAT AND ITS FOSSIL ALLIES GUESTSEskimo Joe - Song "Say Something" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtWeAspTz0gThe Singing Revolution - Music from Estonia - https://singingrevolution.com/ Dr Elizabeth Boulton, a former army major in the ADF has published Plan E with the US Marine Corps University in Virginia. Her expertise in logistics and experience in East Timor and Iraq has shown her the flaws in our preparation for threats of a conventional nature. She calls for a Climate Emergency Peace Treaty to give us time to focus on the hyperthreat that makes present day conflicts pale in comparison. She is shocked that there is no plan to disarm the climate hyperthreat. Armies of the world are sent to protect the supply lines for oil, coal and gas yet these are at the core of the hyperthreat. Police are used to intimidate and imprison protestors blockading the system that is overheating the earth. This is outdated thinking and dangerous. Governments, financiers, military and intelligence services are rocketing our ecosystems to "hothouse Earth". However, what is presently legal will soon become criminal ecocide. Imagine an oil well being dismantled by workers and attacked by mercenaries from the black market in Oil.Or imagine a forest with Indigenous protectors being terrorised by illegal loggers. Or fisheries or water supplies that need to be conserved for the common good. Or miners opening up an illegal coal mine. It's hard to imagine it now, but calling in the troops to protect this work might be necessary if all other peaceful negotiations fail. There is a lot of compassion for veterans traumatised by what they have done and seen and this plan re deploys them in building and land regeneration. Mobilising the 18 million people displaced by climate chaos would give them jobs as earth citizens. Dr Boulton's fast and furious plan is that Global security forces will be deployed to help us survive.Related news articles: Alumna Dr Elizabeth Boulton addresses the ‘hyperthreat' of climate change, UNSW Canberra, 26 July 2022 Climate Change Isn't a Threat Multiplier. In this final episode of season 2, PGAP speaks with Economic Reform Australia (ERA) to find out why fundamental changes to our economic systems are a crucial part of a transition toward degrowth. Why do we have an economic system that prizes money and extraction over the environment and prospects for future generations? What is this ‘MMT' that everyone is on about these days? Why is economics something that everyone should try to understand and not just leave to the academics and experts? PGAP travels to Adelaide to chat with ERA's very own Bernard Thomson to find out more. PGAP also speaks with freelance economic thinker Zoltan Bexley to find out more about why Australia's current economic system results in many poor outcomes for many of us, such as the favourite bugbear on PGAP – Australia's housing unaffordability crisis. _ Please not that opinions raised in this episode are those of both guests and may not necessarily reflect the opinions of ERA as a whole. _ Host Michael Bayliss reflects on the dizzying last 12 months on the road, armed with microphone and recording hardware, that has resulted in on-the-ground PGAP views spanning the east coast from the highlands of the NSW/QLD border, down to Tasmania, then across to Adelaide. Now settled in Albany, Western Australia, I take time on this episode to reflect on the amazing journey and the incredible diversity of people doing outstanding post-growth things as we finally wrap up for season 2 of PGAP. PGAP will be taking a short break to revamp our graphics, create a new website and most importantly, take a well-earned break before we return with a vengeance for season 3. In the meantime, you can while away the time by meandering through these following links: The Economic Reform Australia (ERA) website can be found here. (https://era.org.au/) Sign up for a regular online journal and if you live in Adelaide, ERA regularly host events that take place within the heart of Adelaide's CBD. Please take the time during PGAP's break to rate and review this podcast. Apple Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/post-growth-australia-podcast/id1522194099) seems best place to do so. If you would like to be interviewed by PGAP, or know someone you'd like to dob in, please contact us. Host Michael Bayliss is also available for interview – he loves being a host but he also misses being a guest! PGAP relies on word of mouth to get around, we don't use any advertising or paid promotion. So, please get out there and spread our agnostic gospel on post-growth. At PGAP, we put our hat off to SPA for allowing this podcast to explore the broader issue of degrowth in which the population debate is one controversial but a necessary moving piece of discussion in the movement. Throughout the two seasons of PGAP, we often ask our guests at least one question of population and invite a diversity of opinions that invites open discussion rather than closed division. This is the only way we're going to move forward on issues that we may not always see eye to eye on. Speaking of SPA, they have launched a ‘Let's Rethink Big Australia' (https://population.org.au/lets-rethink-big-australia/) campaign. We invite you to check it out. On this new edition of CORY TALKS… Doctor Who blew up the internet for a little while, which made a great change from it being Kim Kardashian! The brand new series starring Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor returns at the end of October. I can't wait! While out walking I often see cats, but George The Ginger Cat is one of my favourites. My latest interaction with him melted my heart. Microsoft released Windows 11 this past week. I jumped on that train early and I am more than happy with the results of this. On this new edition of CORY TALKS… Something totally unexpected happened to me today. Someone I don't even know, came up to me in the street and gave me a really, really nice compliment. Not enough of that in the world. We all need some niceties right now I think. But when I got home from my walks, I discovered that Victoria had recorded the highest ever one day COVID-19 positive numbers, which was a downer to say the least. One this Check-In special, I talk about that and we hear from Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews at his media briefing today (Thursday 30 September 2021). On this new edition of CORY TALKS… It's a check-in from me… shaken edition. All shook up for more than one reason. There was a 6.0 earthquake east of Melbourne today (Wednesday 22nd September). I didn't feel it, but many did across Victoria, as well as three other states and the nation's capital. The primary thing I'm shaken by is the level of rioting that's been going on lately in Melbourne at protests over the lockdown, mask wearing, social distancing and the construction industry… ooh and who can forget… the vaccine. On this new edition of CORY TALKS… It has been a long time coming. A very long time. But now I am fully vaccinated with the coronavirus vaccine. I talk about my path to get to this point. The COVID-19 tests I had when I wasn't well that both come back negative and the wait to get the vaccine I wanted – the one I felt far less risk about. On this new edition of CORY TALKS… Here's my ten-minute rant on anti-vaxxers and the Federal Government of Australia. Fear not (about the vaccine and what I say in this special), I do not believe there's some sort of conspiracy to track your movements – your Facebook already does that unless you've turned those features off. These are my views. They may also be yours. But they may also NOT be yours. I just ask that you listen. My views are not for political or financial reasons. I freely put them out there because I am concerned that a number of people in Australia are failing to keep themselves and their loved ones safe by doing some good old research that doesn't include social media. But facts and I guess a good place to start is with your doctor. My second COVID-19 jab is tomorrow (Tuesday 14th September). I'll present another special episode later this week… once I shake off the government operative following me - only joking!!! On this special edition of CORYTALKS… VICTORIAN LOCKDOWN – part two The day after the last special edition on the Victorian Lockdown, the state's Premier Daniel Andrews announced that while the signs were encouraging, Victoria would need more time to get a hold of this Delta variant of COVID-19. The Premier announced the lockdown would be extended for a further seven days. New South Wales removalists seem to have a thing for Victoria. Victoria Police turn some away from the border in Mildura, in the north of the state. Not before fining them. By Friday things got worse for New South Wales which puts other states at risk. The NSW Premier wanted extra Pfizer vaccines from other states to deal with the Sydney burgeoning numbers. But that's not happening, and the Prime Minister put a Band-Aid on the situation extending the length of time between the doses to ensure enough people in New South Wales get their first dose. If that isn't a clear indication the Federal Government don't have nearly enough Pfizer vaccines! The arrogance of the New South Wales Premier when almost two months ago she appeared on radio and said NSW would not be helping Victoria out with extra doses during the states first Delta variant outbreak at the time. Protests in NSW, Victoria and Queensland over the lockdowns has almost certainly guaranteed the lockdowns will have to continue. New Zealand has put an at least eight-week pause on the Trans-Tasman Travel Bubble until the outbreaks are under control in Australia. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern also has a plan to evacuate Kiwi's currently in Australia. If only Australia had a strong and effective leader like Ms Ardern. At the time of recording, South Australia and Victoria will be coming out of lockdown tonight, but in Victoria there will still be COVID-19 restrictions. All the details are at https://coronavirus.vic.gov.au Love to find a nice “and finally” story. It's hard during a pandemic, but this one is a gem. It's a report from ABC News Australia of a group of taxi drivers from my home city of Geelong, who have been putting their hands up to help the community right back to the first lockdown in March 2020. On this special edition of CORYTALKS… The Victorian government announced a snap five-day lockdown to deal with COVID-19 Delta variant cases popping up in the state as a result Victorians returning from New South Wales who tested positive and the removalist crew of three who hauled furniture from Sydney to Melbourne and then on to Adelaide – causing headaches for health officials in three states. The lockdown began at 11:59pm on Thursday 15th of July and at the time of publication, is still hoped to end tomorrow night (11:59pm Tuesday 20th of July). The decision could be delayed right up until tomorrow depending on the level of control over the outbreak that contact tracers and health officials believe they've reached. On this final edition of Cory Talks… The New South Wales government may actually be taking their lockdown seriously now as restrictions were tightened on Friday and further mask rules taking effect from tomorrow (Tuesday 13 July 2021). Sunday the NSW Premier announced there could be as many as 100 new cases today. Sadly, an elderly woman from New South Wales died from COVID-19. As numbers continue to frustrate hardworking contact tracers and health officials in NSW, news has arisen that nearly 200 students at an exclusive Catholic school in Sydney were given the Pfizer vaccine by mistake. South of NSW, restrictions have eased in Victoria with the whole state on the same level of lessened restrictions now. But with school holidays now over, the Andrews government is concerned for families returning home from COVID areas of concern. On this new edition of Cory Talks… #ScottyFromMarketing #ScottyTheAnnouncer whatever you wish to call Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, I'm dissecting his (yet another) announcement for a plan – I think it might be a plan for a plan, that he delivered last Friday in relation to the vaccine rollout and his #ScottFromMedicalSchool announcement that those under 40 in Australia could get the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine if they wanted to. This is despite the advice from his government's own experts. Who needs experts when we have Scott Morrison! Yes… I'm not a happy chappy! On this new edition of Cory Talks… Almost one week into the two-week COVID-19 lockdown in New South Wales. But that's not the biggest story this week. Welcome to the Cory Talks Podcast! On this brand-new episode… As Victoria gets on top of the COVID outbreak, New South Wales has one of its own. Welcome to the Cory Talks Podcast! On this brand-new episode… More restrictions to be lifted in Victoria as the Chief Health Officer, Professor Brett Sutton asks Victorians to continue getting tested over the winter months so we can stay on top of the COVID-19 situation. I did just this as I'd been feeling a little unwell recently. Hear me read the text message with the results of my COVID-19 test from last Sunday. Victoria has also struggled in the past week with wild weather causing flooding in the states east that has seen many Victorians without power for days. With the prospect for some of no power until July 10! Sky News Australia's prized minister of misinformation, Peta Credlin awarded an Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. New South Wales Deputy Premier John Barilaro has a very thin skin when it comes to comedian and social commentator, Jordan Shanks, known on YouTube as Friendly Jordies. Not only is the politician suing FJ, he's also had the YouTubers friend and employee, 21 year old independent journalist Kristo Langker arrested and charged in a sequence of events you'd expect from a TV show, or a real life dictatorship incident. The video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXtq4a8829g is very confronting and disturbing. If you can watch it and feel as outraged as many Australians do, consider donating to the fighting fund at https://www.friendlyjordies.com/legal-fund. I've done just that! The Federal Government's billion-dollar robodebt scheme took more than just people's money, it also took many lives. The courts order the government to repay the money. On In Focus this week, the latest on the Biloela Family asylum seekers bid to remain in Australia. The Prime Minister is adamant that the family's stay is not permanent. Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews has shown she can be just as uncaring as the Prime Minister. Meantime Morrison is the subject of an ABC-TV Australia 4 Corners report into his association with an Australian QAnon whack-job. A man whose family reported the PM's friend of many years, to the Terrorist Hotline. After months off work due to a nasty fall, Victorian Premier Dan Andrews is ready to return to work in the next week or so. Welcome to the Cory Talks Podcast! On this brand-new episode… Victoria continues to move carefully and cautiously back to COVID Normal. A slight change to the COVID regulations announced on the last episode, face masks must continue to be worn outside in Greater Melbourne. In the war of words, facts and taxpayers money, who won? Christian Porter or The Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The answer depends on who you speak to, but it shouldn't. The controversial upgrade to the Australian War Memorial is to go ahead. Two Victorian's foolishly went on a trip across three states, infected with COVID-19. Here's the link to the story where you can follow these two idiots 1,700 kilometre journey from Melbourne to Queensland's Sunshine Coast. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-06-10/covid-exposure-sites-nsw-qld-cases-victoria-sunshine-coast/100204044 Vladimir Putin takes further steps to silence that thorn in his side, Alexei Navalny. Tax records from some of America's richest should make you red in the face with disgust and should make the super-rich red in the face from embarrassment. Welcome to the Cory Talks Podcast! On this brand-new episode… COVID-19 restrictions in Victoria to be eased from 11:59 tonight (Thursday 10 June 2021). I've got a round up of those details for you in this edition. The statement from acting Victorian Premier James Merlino and full list of changes are available at https://coronavirus.vic.gov.au While Victoria tries to get this more virulent variant under control, Prime Minister Scott Morrison urged the state to follow New South Wales' lead in ending lockdown as soon as possible. I know this must sound like a joke to some of you, but the PM was serious. Why the blame game in coronavirus doesn't help. Changes to Australia's health system, Medicare has many doctors concerned. Claiming election fraud seems to be as catching as COVID-19. The almost decade long struggle for two Sri Lankan Tamil asylum seekers and their Australian born children is heartbreaking to hear about. On In Focus today, the story of Priya and Nades, and their children Kopika and Tharunicaa. They're better known as the Biloela Family – named after the Queensland town they settled in when seeking asylum from persecution, only to find more of it in Australia thanks to the Morrison government. https://www.change.org/p/scott-morrison-bring-priya-back-to-biloela It's important that nations around the world know the plight of The Biloela Family as 3 year old Tharunicaa suffers in hospital after being airlifted from their detention on Christmas Island to Perth due to pneumonia and possible septicaemia. Welcome to the Cory Talks Podcast! On this brand-new episode… A fresh update on the COVID-19 situation in Victoria, Australia and there's concerns for the Kappa and Delta variants of coronavirus, as Victorian health officials tirelessly investigate each case. Job security can be a concern at the best of times. While the rich get richer, the rest of us continue to make ends meet. With the lockdown in Victoria and people struggling, the federal government was criticised for refusing to help the more vulnerable. When the Prime Minister finally announced assistance, it could be considered more like dangling a piece of cheese from a great height, that no one could reach. In Focus: American Politics – Destination Backwards… at least that's the way it seems to me. With every positive step forward by a caring and compassionate President like Joe Biden, the Republicans mission seems to be dragging America and Americans backwards. I'd like to hear from my American listeners on their opinion of how America is doing right now. Contact via www.corytalks.com The kiwifruit war being waged. It's an expensive war. Welcome to the Cory Talks Podcast! On this brand-new episode… The latest available information on the Victorian COVID-19 circuit breaker lockdown and the changes that happen tonight. Important listening for all Victorian's. Prime Minister Scott Morrison met New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern for their annual trans Tasman talks. I find it surprising that New Zealand is on Australia's side in our conflict with China. Sure, China shares some of the blame, but Australia cannot take the moral high ground on our deteriorating relations with China. One of the questions from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's “Australia Talks” survey asked, is Australia racist. The results might be surprising. Australian rabid Rottweiler (that's what I think of her), Peta Credlin acts like she's a journalist, but she's nothing more than an attention seeker, and her latest stunt is beyond the pale! Welcome to the Cory Talks Podcast! On this brand-new episode… This is the first episode of season four. In this edition, my conversation with a guy who was trying to get me to believe he works for Amazon Prime. It seems I need to be recording whenever my phone rings with the number of scammers out there. A bit of an update on what's been happening since the last regular edition of the podcast. Have I got the COVID-19 jab yet… NO. But not because I don't want to get it. A week long circuit breaker lockdown was announced for Victoria in the last few days. There has been a COVID outbreak in parts of Greater Melbourne, so the government has acted to put a halt to this. On this edition of the podcast, Cory Talks Aussieland Stars from Hollywood have been moving to Australia to escape COVID-19. Most are here for work – which is fine, but what about those who are trying to dodge the pandemic as much as they can, and meantime thousands of Australian citizens have been struggling for many months to just get a flight home from where they are currently. It's not just the amount of flights, but also the exorbitant price of flights. At the height of the pandemic in 2020, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison made a vow to get all Aussies who wanted to come home, back by Christmas. I guess in the deflecting detail PM's defence, he didn't say which Christmas. While no direct fault of their own, will these celebrities and their film projects suffer in Australia, because Australian audiences may see the stars as queue jumpers? On this edition of Cory Talks… Scams Recently I've been followed by someone on Twitter who comes from The Gambia in Africa. I believe his reason for following me was to scam me out of money. On this edition of Cory Talks… Daylight Savings What is it, why do we have it? It surprised me that there were only a few territories around the world that have never used daylight savings and equally as surprising for me, a great number that have experienced Daylight Savings Time and said, no thanks – I'll be fine. Personally I don't blame them. I need to say over and over and over again, “spring forward, fall back” as a way of remembering which way to turn the clocks when Daylight Savings Time comes, and goes just as it did early this morning in many parts of Australia. On this edition of Cory Talks… The state of Victoria has been declared virus free. And with that wonderful news comes sweeping changes to COVID-19 restrictions in the garden state. Hear from Victoria's Chief Health Officer, Professor Brett Sutton on the great work all Victorian's have achieved. The Chamber of Commerce thinks the restrictions being lifted from tonight (Friday 26 March 2021, 6:00pm) do not go far enough. Hopefully more Victorian's can be vaccinated with the approval of 800,000 doses of locally produced AstraZeneca vaccine. My worry is (apart from when will actually get the jab), is the increased talk of opening up Australia's borders and the potential risk of another lcokdown. On this edition of Cory Talks… I'm truly sorry if the stories of rape allegations in the Australian political sphere at the moment is disturbing, but we are not going to be able to fix the problem if we sweep it under the carpet. Canberra rape claimant Brittany Higgins has a win in court of defamatory comments by Defence Minister Senator Linda Reynolds. The money will go to help survivors of rape and abuse in the Canberra area. Today, Monday 15 March 2021 is the day of #March4Justice. Time for you, me and government to listen! The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia is a national embarrassment. Surely not all adult Australian's who wish to be vaccinated, will be by October as the Morrison government claims. European Countries stop the use of the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine temporarily while they investigate if there is a link to the vaccine and blood clots. Australia plans to keep using this vaccine. The AstraZeneca jab is the one most Australian's will receive. Western Australian's went to polls on Saturday. Was there really a doubt of who would win. The people have spoken in the west. Let's hope Canberra is listening with increasing talk of an early federal election before 2022. Australia's Mr Potato Head, Peter Dutton in a Trans Tasman stoush. Aren't we lucky Home Affairs Minister Dutton isn't Prime Minister… well not yet anyway. Former Liberal Party Australia government Foreign Minister Julie Bishop confirms there's a boys club in Canberra. That Oprah interview with Harry and Meagan. Even the Queen has weighed in on the matter. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews had a nasty fall last week. He cracked some ribs and did some damage to his vertebrae. A CEO of a law firm loses her job after been kept in the dark about the firm taking on the case of alleged rapist, Commonwealth Attorney General, Christian Porter. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison in his own words… no wonder Australian women are so angry. I'm angry too! Federal Government coughs up funds to finance cheap flights at targeted locations around Australia. With the vaccination of Australian's way behind, is this really the best time to be flying interstate for a holiday? And if the Morrison wants things back to normal, and people back at work – how can they do their job and take a break at the same time? Sounds like desperation from the government. On this edition of Cory Talks… It's a sh*t show in Canberra at the moment. You'd be hard pressed to find an adult Australian who is not aware of the truly disturbing rape allegations in the nation's capital and a claim of a historical rape involving a very senior Australian government minister and Senator. The Federal Government has a completely different stance on how to proceed (quite simply, closing the case). But Australian's are angry and upset… and rightly so. I'll present a timeline of events as they've happened since the last podcast. There will be #March4Justice protest rallies around the country including at Parliament House Canberra on Monday 15th March at noon. Two Royal Commissions came to an end this past week. A federal one into the Aged Care sector. One state RC into the Mental Health system in Victoria. Making the announcements, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews. Spot the difference between these leaders. One admitted fault, accepted recommendations and promised change. The other flew into defensive mode. Australian Senator calls a former staffer a lying cow after making rape allegations. Triple earthquake off New Zealand and resulting tsunami alert. Blowout in the cost of Australia's digital future, the National Broadband Network. It could have cost a whole lot less if politics was not involved. Western Australia joins Victoria in launching a Royal Commission into Crown Resorts and Casino after a damning report in New South Wales banned Crown from opening a casino in that state. Australian music industry legend and founder of Mushroom Records, Michael Gudinski has passed away. The Queen's video chat to Australia. Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2021 is given the thumbs up despite operating in a COVID safe environment with social distancing. Trump 2024… please tell me it's not true!!! Kayleigh McEnany, the former White House Press Secretary joins Fox News to the amazement of no one. Dolly Parton in fine voice as she prepared to get the COVID-19 vaccine. On this edition of Cory Talks… That circuit breaker COVID-19 lockdown in Victoria recently has done the trick it seems, with further restrictions being lifted over the past weekend. Meanwhile Queensland has opened up its metaphorical arms to Greater Melbourne, lifting travel restrictions. I will not be reporting on the now growing list of rape allegations out of Australia's capital. I've stated my reasons on my “Use Your Words” blog and also a rather lengthy response in the opening of this episode. You can find the blog post at https://cory.media/2021/02/23/capital-crime/ Australian government COVID-19 conspiracy theorist Craig Kelly has quit his party, almost guaranteeing that he'll be even more of a nuisance to the Liberal Party than before. The JobSeeker unemployment benefits base rate will go up $25 a week from next month. But the $75 a week coronavirus supplement will disappear. Not exactly a good time to be persecuted by the Morrison government. But dividing the nation is what they do best. Evil old business tyrant (no not Rupert Murdoch this time), Gerry Harvey who controls the Harvey Norman department stores in Australia and New Zealand has decided NOT to give back the $22 million it accepted from the Federal Government in the form of JobKeeper to keep staff on during the pandemic. This is despite make huge profits in 2021. #BoycottHarveyNorman Facebook refriended Australia after the Morrison government which was not going to cave on their proposed media bargaining legislation. Well… they caved slightly and came to an agreement with Facebook. However the social media behemoth reserves the right to ban news being served up on its platform in Australia in the future. My opinion – neither side is looking out for Australia or journalism. When the going gets tough, Republican nitwit Ted Cruz gets going… to Cancun. I don't think America can survive yet another selfish power hungry cretin in politics. Speaking of selfish power hungry cretins, Trump's tax returns have finally been released. Hopefully in time to lock up the Orange Idiot. Speaking or right wing troublemakers, Australia has a real problem with extremism. If only we didn't have a extreme right federal government, the country might be able to tackle the problem. UK court tells Uber it has employees, not contract workers. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews threatens to tear up Crown Casino's license to operate in the state if the recently called Royal Commission into the gambling industry in Victoria deems it necessary. Oil refinery to pivot into the future… better late than never. Tech news on Twitter and Bitcoin. And whatever you do, don't call him Mr Potato Head. On this edition of Cory Talks… Rape allegations by two former Liberal Party staffers at Australian Parliament House levelled against one former male staffer. What did the Prime Minister Scott Morrison know and when did he know it? His words do not feel believable and if you believe the screenshot of a text message, the Prime Ministers Office knew about one of the allegations for a greater length of time than it has admitted. The COVID-19 vaccine programme is finally rolling out in Australia. The Federal Government says all Aussies who wish to be vaccinated, should be by October. The snap five day lockdown in Victoria was just that – thankfully! This was due to concerns about the more virulent strain of the COVID-19 virus, the UK strain. Now the state is looking to further easing of coronavirus restrictions this week. Western Australian election in less than three weeks time and if you believe Newspoll, the Labor Party under Premier Mark McGowan looks to a massive win. My take on this whole Facebook banning news in Australia thing. I don't think either of the two (or is that three) players have the upper hand. I think in the end it's Australian's who will pay some sort of price for this political point scoring exercise. New silly fad on TikTok. Parler back from the wilderness. For them it's been a long month. But if you're new to the unfiltered platform, you might find it hard to join. US President Joe Biden plans to get tough on guns. Good luck Joe when America has such an obsession with guns! (Hey, don't shoot the messenger). Harry and Meagan are officially out of The Firm. Australian Open heating up for the February 8 start, and I'm talking about the exerted ranting of one American tennis player and his first world problem. Australian Chemists/Pharmacies able to sign up from today (Monday 1 February 2021) to become COVID-19 vaccination points. The European Union being heavy handed on limiting to quantity of inoculations to non-EU countries. It may have an impact on Australia's expected vaccine supplies. On this edition of Cory Talks... America has another chance at regaining their democracy after the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as President and Vice President of the United States on January 20. The Trump Impeachment (Part Two) is expected to start on February 8. The Australian Open tennis Grand Slam also starts in February and it's had controversy of its own with some professional players acting like spoilt children. Once players girlfriend would make my douche of the week award... if I had such an award to bestow. Australia Day is tomorrow (Tuesday 26th January), it's divided many Australian's for a number of years. Some of Australia's first nations people, see the day as Invasion Day. A time for sorrow and not celebration. A compromise must be sought. One thing I wouldn't compromise on is that tomorrow, former tennis great Margaret Court is expected to be given an Australia Day Honours award. She was a great Australian sportsperson and hero to this country in her time. But now she is a horrid embarrassment to Australian society. On this edition of Cory Talks... Hello there everyone! It's been a while, almost two months in fact since the last edition of the show and I'm picking things up with days before the Inauguration in the US of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. It's been a rocky road to January 20, but I don't need to tell American's about that, they've been living it and my thoughts are with all the decent people who have not been taken in by the lies and deflection of the Trump administration. One episode one of season three, I'll look at some of the stuff that's happened in the past 50 plus days. Not only the American election, but also some of the stuff that's been happening in Australia. But let's face it, America has continued to be the focus of the world's attention. It's strange, because out-going President Donald Trump usually likes being the centre of attention. Like nothing's happened the Australian Open tennis is coming to Melbourne. Yes, despite a pandemic, it seems the tennis must play on. At least four people who've flown into Australia for the grand slam have tested positive for COVID-19. Thankfully the quarantine borders for the tennis are holding. Hasn't stopped some players from trying to leave their hotel rooms though. Is it just me, or has Australia's COVIDsafe coronavirus tracing app has gone missing? The sole surviving Golden Girl, Betty White celebrated her 99th birthday on Sunday. It's imperative Betty gets the COVID-19 jab. She absolutely has to make it to her 100th... and then keep going (only if she wants to of course). Should the Australian government really be getting into the divorce prevention arena? According to a report from the tatty News Corp toilet paper propaganda sheet, the government is considering it. Aussie supermarket giant Woolworths will stop accepting cash at select stores from January 25. A Cory Talks topic of discussion that I'd like to hear from you on. Drop me a line via the website. While Victoria continues on its path to COVID Normal, not so good news out of South Australia which initiated a brief lockdown this past week. On this edition of Cory Talks... Multiple media outlets early Sunday morning Australian Time projected Joe Biden to be President-Elect of the United States after securing at least 273 electoral college votes, three more than required to assume the Presidency. President Trump has been doing as much as he could to disrupt the counting and diminish the awesome democratic right American's have. But not all agree with that assessment as you'll hear in this episode. Joe Biden spoke of hope on Saturday. This was around twelve hours before he was projected to be the next President. As of Saturday, Victoria had recorded eight straight days of double doughnuts - that's eight consecutive days of zero new cases of COVID-19 and zero deaths in the garden state. The Inquiry into the bungled hotel quarantine system in Victoria is being finalised. There are 69 recommendations and they will be delivered to the Governor General of Victoria. On this edition of Cory Talks... On this special episode, the focus is on the American election. What a result... well maybe... to be honest I don't know because at the time of typing this, votes were still being counted. There you go, honesty OF politics, not honesty IN politics. At the time of typing this, Joe Biden was in front in the Electoral College votes, 203 to 103. While actual votes for the Republicans and Trump are slightly ahead (at 12:47pm AEDT). On this edition of Cory Talks... The New Zealand election and a stunning result for Jacinda Ardern's Labour Party with a mandate to lead the country for the next three years. It's the first election win in 25 years where a single party has received enough votes to lead without the support of another party. Also election for Labor in the ACT (Australian Capital Territory). The Labor party has been in power in the nations capital for almost two decades. The Victorian Liberal Party have a plan for COVID-19... finally. But is it too late with the states positive cases continuing to fall? The US Town Hall Presidential Debates. The President on NBC and Biden on ABC. We all know how much ratings are important to the Orange Idiot, so he's probably not going to like that more people watched the Democrat nominee. What does copper and COVID-19 have to do with each other? The answer might surprise. Rupert Murdoch's attack drone, Peta Credlin tries standover tactics on the Victorian Premier... which fail, and she was not happy. Police looking into someone who's caused a COVID-19 panic in two regional Victorian locations. And a nice political story to end with. Yes I know, good and politics are not words that are at all expected to co-exist. On this edition of Cory Talks... With just a few weeks to the Queensland election as donations scandal has hit that states opposition party leader, Deb Frecklington. I should create a new segment called, stupid sh*t the US President says because this week through either drugs or his natural, perhaps unnatural lack of sense has made him say lots of kooky stuff. To borrow a saying from the Orange Idiot, "you're not going to believe it". New Zealanders prepare for their General election this weekend. No huge gaffes to report there thankfully. Anger that some university course costs to go up. One independent pollie fears it will put higher education out of the reach of many. Former Abbott Government attack dog, Peta Credlin drops a truth bomb. How politics almost makes telling bald faced lies palatable. The hoped for major easing of lockdown restrictions in Victoria from Monday seems destine to disappoint like an episode of Channel 10's The Bachelorette. The flattening of the COVID-19 curve has not progressed as well as expected, while some still think getting back to normal right now is a good idea. Seems like there might be a correlation between the two. New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has confessed at an inquiry of being in a relationship with a fellow MP she sacked for corruption. But because she's a Liberal Premier, the media goes easy on her saying it's a personal matter. The hypocrites ignore that she'd lied. Apple launches yet another series of expensive iPhone's... yes, I'll probably buy one. Pre-ordering starts at the weird time of 11pm this Friday (AEDT). Plus how to get around a hacked sex toy. On this edition of Cory Talks... Following the Australian Federal Government's 2020 Hope, payer and jobs budget, there's anger at the people it leaves out. Most notably half of the population. Also New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian is pretty angry herself. NSW businesses flouting COVID-19 rules has caught her eye. The Vice Presidential Debate this week between VP Mike Pence and nominee Kamala Harris was not as fiery as the first Presidential Debate... thank goodness. Seems like there's not going to be a second debate between Trump and Biden because the orange idiot is having a hissy fit over not being allowed to do it in person, on account of him being infected... with COVID-19 too. Never a dull moment in Victorian politics. Premier Daniel Andrews still copping it from the state opposition, but more so this week from the Murdoch press and fellow biased media outlets. There is some smoke there, but is there a legitimate fire the Andrews Government needs to attend to? Nearly 100 year old ice cream treat to get a new name. On this edition of Cory Talks... Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg handed down the 2020 Budget in Canberra yesterday (Tuesday 6 October). It was a budget speech that included the word jobs, a lot! Immediate tax cuts, but you have to make at least $45,000 a year. A budget for people who already have money is the way it seems to me. Kiwi's not in favour of lowering the voting age with just over a week until the New Zealand general election. Trump is out of his hospital bed and back in the White House... that place is going to need to be fumigated before January 20! What you do when you come face to face with a guy holding a hypodermic needle in his hands. Victoria holds its breath the sanity prevails, and further lockdown laws can be eased on October 19. On this edition of Cory Talks... The virus that US President Donald J Trump called a hoax, then would magically disappear in April, the same virus he played down despite knowing how dangerous it was... yes that virus, COVID-19. The President and First Lady now have this hoax liberal media coronavirus. Oh and the First Lady is now the Grinch who stole Christmas! The Australian Federal Budget is released this coming week. High deficit and expected tax cuts for those who can afford to be paying tax... what could possibly go wrong?!?!? Victorian opposition minister Tim Smith, otherwise known as Dim Tim is still on his crusade to bring down state Premier Daniel Andrews and the Labor government, at all costs. Even risking the health and wellbeing of Victorians. The first Presidential Debate for 2020 was described by CNN reporter as a sh*t show. While many have called for it to be the first and only US Presidential Debate this cycle, there's going to be at least one or maybe two more. Again... what could possibly go wrong?!?!? Australian government ministers are putting more public money at risk by approving funding for projects with a lack of oversight. I'm not talking about Rupert Murdoch and his dodgey News Corp, Fox News, Sky News propaganda machines, so that should be a relief. I know it is for me. A Royal Commission investigation into the failings of the Aged Care sector in Australia, a sad indictment of incompetence and putting money over the aged. That's just my assessment. The final report will be less damning. Let's see if the Australian government acts on the recommendations from the RC. Australia lost a treasure this week. RIP Helen Reddy. On this edition of Cory Talks... The rate of COVID-19 case in Victoria continues to drop which is very encouraging. While the state is not out of the woods yet, it looks like there could be some major changes to the lockdown laws in the coming weeks if we all keep getting tested and do the right thing by ourselves and other. Talk of a travel bubble between New Zealand and Australia is back on the agenda. You can still download the TikTok app in America... at least for the time being. How to keep occupied and help family and friends during a pandemic. It's time to get creative. Donald Trump's America... he really takes that title seriously. Nick Franklin talks to Dr Lee Duffield about the closure of local and regional newspapers by the Murdoch press, and the future of journalism. They discuss the possibilities of a changing media landscape for local journalism and for journalists, and the rise of independent media. Duffield is a media editor for Independent Australia. "He has been practising and teaching journalism for over 40 years. With the ABC he was the first news editor on the youth radio service, Triple-Jay, and the Europe correspondent at the fall of the Berlin Wall." "Until 2017, he was a senior lecturer in journalism at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane and continues to follow research interests in new media, European media and development news, notably in the Pacific region." It was mid-October, 1976, when Suzanne Armstrong, 27, and Susan Bartlett, 28 moved in to number 147, Easey St. The three-bedroom house was perfect for the two of them, as well as Armstrong’s 16-month-old son, Gregory. Then, in early 1977, neighbours would watch emergency workers and police swarm the property, after the bodies of the two women were found three days after they’d been killed. Helen Thomas is a journalist and author who was a cub reporter at Melbourne newspaper The Age at the time of the double homicide. She has since researched the case and profiled it in her book ‘Murder On Easey Street: Melbourne’s Most Notorious Cold Case.’ Jessie sits down with Helen to walk us through the case, and find out if there’s any potential for justice for the families of Suzanne Armstrong and Susan Bartlett. The upcoming Australian federal election is looking set to be fought on, among other things, tax reform. While the Labor Party want to wind back certain perks for the well-to-do, such as negative gearing and dividend imputation, the Liberals insist these changes will affect the aspirational middle-class and pensioners, in the case of the latter. Meanwhile, a lot of the electorate are left bedazzled by the complications of the debate, left wondering what policy change will effect whom. SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler spoke with John Passant, Canberra correspondent at Independent Australia and former Assistant Commissioner of Taxation at the Australian Tax Office. John Passant has written on tax for years, and explains how these mechanisms work and why Labor are arguing for a winding back of them. We then explore whether a campaign based on these reforms represents a rejuvenated Left ready to dismantle rampant neoliberalism, or if is a case of Labor wanting to rock the boat.
